Villages Along the A25 - Oxted in Surrey

  • This is the second in a small mini series about the villages that lie along the A25 in Surrey. I have teamed up again with Marq English and to explore this small town.
Oxted is a commuter town with a railway station, with direct train services to London and has the district council offices. Its main developed area is contiguous with the village of Limpsfield and it is twinned with a town called sandford for the greater good. Six intermittent headwaters of the River Eden unite in the occasional market town including its furthest source, east of Titsey Place. The Eden feeds into Kent's longest river, the Medway. Only the southern slope of the North Downs is steep and its towns and farmland form the Vale of Holmesdale, a series of headwaters across Surrey and Kent to separate rivers.

When I was a lad Churchill regularly came into our local pub(The White Hart), he was a great darts player, and loved a single malt - he was regularly brahms and liszt but got on well with us locals(my Dad).

Thanks for this video showing Old Oxted, you could do a follow up on Oxted showing the town, park, shops, train station, St Mary’s Church and Oxted School. It is very different from the old Oxted side. Both are lovely and we love living here. Thanks 😊

The Crown, if I recall, was the main pub for local teens to drink in the Surrey area (Lingfield, Hurst Green, Oxted, Dormsnsland, etc), who usually were pupils at the nearby Oxted (County) School (alongside the "Cage Cabin" pub in Lingfield). The Old Bell was owned by a football player/manager at one time, I think, and they didn't really want the "kids" in that pub (so they had rules such as patrons couldn't drink directly from the bottle, etc). The Wheatsheaf pub was more popular with "heavy metal" fans when I was a teen.
Most of this changed, however, when a new "Wetherspoons" chain pub opened right next to Oxted train station (which is on the other side of the "new", but still picturesque, town).

It's difficult to imagine who would use a telephone box often enough for BT (or the GPO or whoever) to maintain it. Especially in Oxted. I like to imagine a well dressed dowager making her way from a late medieval house to call her florist.

After we filmed, there was a queue to use the box. :)

Old Oxted is the old medieval village. After the railway came in the 1880s, the town moved north and became centred around the railway station and the medieval church that was set away from the original village. This meant that the old high street (the road you walked down) became a quiet backwater.
    Great video :)

Much more interesting to walk down the quieter part than the Victorian and more modern.

You two should become Surrey estate agents! :-) I love the second part of your description. Oxted is definitely a village of two-halves. The part north of the A25 is very different from the south (where you were.) It also have a big Morrisons!

There's a by-law that stated no pubs are to be built in Oxted hence why Old Oxted has so many. There is a Witherspoon's in Oxted now though it's on land owned by British Rail and is exempt from that particular law.

Oxted is a lovely village but as i recall there are two halves to Oxted dissected by the A21 you were in the lower part of Oxted but there is another high street to the north.

It would appear that The Old Bell dates from considerably earlier than 1606...some sources say the 1400s...blimey!
The whole place does look beautiful though...

Nice place to visit wouldn’t want to live there too noisy 🙈 cars everywhere , Tom jones bought the phone box from the street where he grew up in Wales an put it in the garden of his Beverley hills mansion , not too many of them k6 around now .

Traffic is a big problem - does seem a shame to pay all the money for a beautiful house like those and then have to put up with the noise and pollution of the cars, buses and lorries.

Most people live in the "new" or main area of Oxted, down the road. It's within walking distance. Even that area is a tad expensive to live in.

Nice village but not as nice as Godstone. On the type of people living in villages it is the same in many villages in the north in that they are becoming places commuters. Even the town I live in is going the same way with new build now exceeding the original houses. The problem I have notice in both village and town is that commuters bring nothing to the area.

Commuter? Mea Culpa. I make every effort to spend my higher London earnings as locally as is possible. If I could earn in Warlingham
/Limpsfield or Oxted like I do in town then I'd never leave. That 06.02 train to L'Bridge is the hardest part of my day.
