    The 1981 Mr. Olympia is considered as the most controversial event in the history of the Mr. Olympia event.
    Franco Columbu came out of retirement to challenge for the title. Franco ended up winning the event, with the favorites such as Danny Padilla, Tom Platz, and Chris Dickerson, being overlooked by the judges.

    When I was 12 I had purchased Bodybuilding by Joe Weider which had all of these dudes in it with them performing different exercises. I began lifting then inspired by Arnold, Franco, Sergio, Chris, Lou and all the other legends of bodybuilding. This was in an era when bodybuilders looked aesthetic still. Now they look like blocky Sherman tanks taking the stage. Bodybuilding is supposed to be who can look the biggest while maintaining aesthetics (muscular beauty contest). Now they settle for biggest. I loved the 90's but that's when the transition began. It was all about who was going to come in at 300 lbs. and shredded. That is why the classic physique is now the best Mr. Olympia.

    • @lazur1
      @lazur1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a matter of what era you came up in. Steve Reeves fans once thought Arnold was too big, & Johnny Weissmuller fans thought Steve Reeves was too big.

    • @reddawn3345
      @reddawn3345 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lazur1 Fair enough. The 80's and into the beginning of the 90's they still had waists skinnier than mine with huge bodies. When Dorian merged into Ronnie something happened to Bodybuilding and in my opinion not for the best. To me that is why Flex Wheeler looked so good because he was like the last of the aesthetic bodybuilders. It's cool to see size but at some point you start sacrificing. Look at the rise of young bodybuilders dying. A dude who is 235-250 with 22-24 inch arms looks way better than 300+ with 22-24+ inch arms. Again to your point it's a matter of the era but I feel Lee Haney and Sergio Oliva looked way better than Ronnie Coleman.

    Franco was beast in his heyday, but in 81 he was just a shadow of himself. Truthfully, I don't think he had the genes to win top titles. He was bow legged, and not very symmetrical at his finest. Tom Platz... I have to wonder why he pushed his legs as far as he did. Instead of being quadzilla, he could could have come in balanced. It seems to me, every body part should be equally built. Arnold in 80 looked good, but he was ~90%, of his former condition. Danny was perfect, I thought. He like Arnold had a very pleasing, to the eye, physique. People have said he could not win because of his height, but look at Franco! This really showed that Bodybuilding shows, like many other sports, is political, and the outcome is favored, or fixed. That reality is a shame!

As for Franco winning the show, I think as legendary as Franco was and the mystique that surrounded him because he was Arnold’s best friend still shouldn’t have landed him in the top spot. I’d have given the title to Tom Platz….to me he was the best on that stage on that day. Legendary Times!

    0:52 Read somewhere.. Frank Zane reply to Arnie on the 1979 Mr O interview sparked his need to return in 1980.. and Arnie claims he was getting in shape for Conan The Barbarian movie so he used the movie charisma to woo the judges..
    why other competitors complain about announcement? If he announced, would they shy away?
    Arnold not his usual best, but tall, sloping traps, full head of hair, confidence, winning smile.. great stage presence..great posing.. always abs tucked in..his homeground.. he would win with his blazers on..
    If he lost.. he lost nothing.. he prepared in lesser time than his competitors..and he has the movie to go.. if he won that is something only Arnold can do.
