I agree. It's by far the best explanation I have heard so far. Their names being written in the dirt signifies their names will be erased as nothing written in the dirt will last.
As a uneducated human and a simpleton, in humility I share a thought of Wisdom all Glory to God. May lips right now with my tongue be sealed in Jesus precious Blood. I too while at 3:40 am was reading and looking for a piece about the Blessed Mother, when by Devine guidance landed on this same piece of scripture. I was totally drawn about His Finger and I asked in Prayer for God to share why His Finger? Then Heavens dew fell upon me and I was learning, He is God Presence and He knows the Law for He Wrote the Law and He Created them from Dirt and Dirt shall they return. I wept with Praise and Glory to the Father. I then asked my Spiritual director and he said this was Valid. God can teach the humble as well. All Glory to the King
Dr. Pitre, Your videos are a treasure. You are a gifted teacher, and we are very blessed you share your gift with us. Can you please do a video on the words of Jesus to the Penitent Thief in the Passion of Luke’s Gospel, “This day you shall be with me in Paradise.”
Thank you, Sir! Please permit me a question: In the list of members of the Sanhedrin, the names are listed with the oldest member listed first. The accusers left one by one, the oldest first. I wonder if he was simply writing their names, starting with the oldest member. This does not invalidate your explanation of why he wrote.
A beautiful reminder that we are never alone in our struggles. God's presence surrounds us, giving us the courage to face any situation with confidence and faith. Wishing everyone a blessed day ahead. 🌈🙌
Usually can't go wrong with St. Augustine (not to mention St. Ambrose). I was a little surprised to hear St. Jerome offered a differing interpretation. I never heard the John 7 (Fountain of living water) part of this before - so I'll add my thanks to Dr. Pitre.
Yochannan Tzur I could be mistaken, but doesn’t it say in the Book of Hebrews that Christ is our rest? So we don’t need to physically keep a Sabbath because Christ is our rest
He could have been writing "where is the man?", since the torah says that both the man and the woman are to be stoned. They said she was caught in the act, so they must have known who the man was too.
they (Pharisees) set her up, and one of them if not the one who asked “what should we do, the law says we should stone her” was participating in the act himself and Jesus knew they were all a part of this but admitting this they are all guilty
@@soflo3218 you didn’t get my point. Scholars agree that older manuscripts of the New Testament did not have this story in it. In later copies, they found this story. So it was definitely added later. My question is to explain, why, who and how it got added later?
@@Badumtss2468 where’s your source ? . If they didn’t find the original manuscript until later doesn’t mean the story was added later. You do know that they don’t have all the original manuscripts you know that right?
@@soflo3218 cant link sources. Comments get automatically deleted by TH-cam. Just check for these passages and search in google whether it was added later or not. I have read Dr. Pitres book on case for Jesus where he tackles the New Testament oldest copies. In this context, scholars have a debate. Some say copies which have this story are second edition of the Gospel of John. Whereas those copies from where this story was missing is the first edition if Gospel of John. It’s interesting. Search it up. I just wanted Dr. Pitre to shed some light on this. His views and opinions.
He simply wrote, "Thy shalt forgive thy neighbor seventy times seven." (Matthew 18:21-22 kjb) It's a commentary on Lev 26:18 and Ex 31:18 kjb "...when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the FINGER OF GOD." As His office of Jehovah.
einc70 MATT 18:21+22,”AND PETER CAME TO HIM AND SAID ,LORD HOW OFTEN SHALL MY BROTHER SIN AGAINST ME AND I FORGIVE HIM,7 TIMES ?AND JESUS SAID TO HIM ,I SAY NOT 7 TIMES BUT 70 TIMES 7 “ this is about forgiving fellow CHRISTIANS,not our neighbors.
The fact that I have heard this story dozens of times but the fact that the husband is never brought up is truly amazing to me. The husband was supposed to be the witness but the husband was not there. And Jesus knew that if they stoned her without the husband condemning her then whoever threw the 1st stone would be a murderer.
Another aspect of the woman caught in adultery story that was pointed out to me is that the law called for both THE MAN AND THE WOMAN caught in this sin to be stoned if guilty. These men produce the guilty woman, but where is the guilty man? Is he one of the accusers? His family member?
I once heard a homily that proposed the possibility that she was on the ground at his feet and by his getting on the ground to write in the dirt, he was positioned to throw himself over her to bodily protect her from the stones, if they did start to cast stones. I thought that was a beautiful thought, at the very least.
That doesn’t sound right considering ppl were stoned to death and He could have very died. I can think of a time when He escaped bc it wasn’t yet His time so it’s doubtful that would’ve happened. Anyways, Jesus didn’t physically throw Himself on anyone, nor would He have to if God wanted to protect her.
This is one of my favorites,in term of martial art, that is the ultimate way of subduing your opponents without using any brutal force:-making use of their own conscience to deflate their own actions,I call it spiritual akido.😊
I really like this presentation. I have my own exegesis that is closely related to the one advanced by St. Augustine and St. Ambrose that you cover. * I think that the story is about more than just the woman taken in adultery. In Catholic Bible study I have been told that the Woman at the Well is a type of the Lost Tribes of the Northern Kingdom. The five husbands are five civilizations imported into the Northern Kingdom to destroy the cultural and religious identity of the Northern Tribes, which was successful. The Northern Tribes went into exile and never returned. * The relationship between God and Israel is said to be spousal. In worshiping false idols Israel was committing spiritual adultery, in violation of the Mt. Sinai Covenant. That is why the prophet Hosea married a harlot, to show Israel what they were doing to God. * Only the woman was brought before Christ. Her paramour was not brought along with her. The lack of a paramour can be explained because the false idols that Israel worshiped were not real gods. You can see this clearly in Psalm 115. Christ came to redeem Israel the harlot from all her iniquity. To me the woman taken in adultery is the type of Israel the harlot. In some translations it is said that the elders were the first to leave. When Christ was writing on the ground, I wonder if He wrote some choice verses from Hosea and Jeremiah about Israel’s harlotry with false idols?
Context: Writing something while some are accusing another of sin. Maybe a list? Where have we seen a list of sins before? And how were they written? By the hand or finger, as in Ps 144: "Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war", and Exodus 31:18, Exodus 32:16: The 10 commandments written by the hand/finger of God. Perhaps it was a examination of conscience for them, after which they realized their own sins.
What else did the Finger of God write in the Old Testament? It was the Ten Commandments! what did Jesus write in the sand when he bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground? The Ten Commandments! It was the Finger of God that wrote the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament and it was the Finger of God that wrote the Ten Commandments in the New Testament.... Here's another clue... And here's another hint... The Book of Romans says that for by the law of God is the knowledge of sin... In the story with woman caught in the act of adultery and John chapter 8 it says that after Jesus knelt down and wrote In The Sand they all were "convicted in their consciences" and went away all of them... Jesus said he did not come to nullify the law of the Old Testament; he came to fulfill it... So it makes perfect sense that when he knelt down and wrote In The Sand The Ten Commandments they were all convicted in their consciences and they went away from the oldest to the youngest
Jeremiah 17:13 “LORD, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the LORD, the spring of living water.” (See John 7 & 8 for context)
Sorry to hear that! Confessing your sins to a priest? Nowhear in scripture is that to be found ... to Believers, the body of Christ yes🙌. If you stop confessing to a priest they will be out of a job, so that would probably not make them very happy😂.🤣🤣🤣
@Niko Bellic I appreciate your conviction but your faith is only as good as what and who you put it in. Show me what you said in scripture and I will believe it. You must realize priests are tainted by the sin of Adam. We're saved by faith alone in Christ alone! Ephesians 2:8-9 Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness Genesis 15:6. No works. But what does the Roman Catholic Church do? they teach that you must keep the law in order to be saved and this is a false gospel. And since the RCC is seeking to be justified by law and Paul the Apostle says we are not to be justified by law Romans 3:28 Romans 4:5 Romans 5:1 also Galatians 5:3-4 therefore they can't be considered a true Christian church... because they violate the doctrine of justification by faith alone in Christ alone. RCC also says these are all( necessary) for salvation! The church, baptism, Penance, sacraments, Services of witnesses of the faith, keeping the Ten Commandments and detachments from riches equals it's a false gospel! That's why no true Christian Church should ever work hand-in-hand with the RCC least it inadvertently give Credence in value to the false gospel that it preaches... Question for you Nico ??? who are you following?? Jesus Christ God in flesh, the creator of all things in heaven and on Earth??? Or are you following man-made traditions? Please tell me where anywhere in the Holy Bible where it says we must worship and pray to Mary... that is a flat out adulterated heresy... was she a special woman? Absolutely yes ...can she hear all our prayers at all times in all places in all languages absolutely not, that's what the Roman Catholic church has brainwashed you into believing. May God give you ears to hear... what is it Prosper a man to gain the whole world but in the end lose their soul. Please don't follow Fallen men only follow the God breathed inspired words of God.
I've always wondered about this. But I think it was a great human response to having to deal with hypocrites. Think of the scene. The Pharisees come scurrying over to Jesus, eager trip up this pretender. Rather than firing back at them, he deliberately slows down the encounter, making them wait on him. Jesus bends down and starts writing. But they continue to ask him. We can imagine him finally slowly getting up and rubbing the dirt off his hands, and calmly responding, "OK, here's the thing..." Then he bent down and continued writing, while they stood there, gaping at each other, and trying to figure how to respond. How much more effective were his simple words than if he had given them a speech. I really don't know if it matters what he was writing.
I can't imagine, this woman and the man with whom she committed adultery would do so out in the open. So this sin would not likely be witnessed by 2? Further, isn't the harmed spouse required to make the charge? Shouldn't the man with whom this woman committed adultery be punished also?
Could Jesus have also been amending the Mosaic law to include those without sin casting the first stone in such situations?(John8:7) The fact he writes with his finger in the earth could also have been an allusion to Exodus31:18 where God writes the commandments that he gave to Moses with his finger as well. Christ being God has the authority to amend that law(Matthew28:18). He writes twice, the first time seems to indicate that he wrote what he said to them. The second time he writes it could have been what some of the early church fathers suggested, an allusion to the the prophecy in Jeremiah. Possibly even a verbatim quote of Jeremiah17:13 so the scribes and Pharisees could see that the prophecy was in relation to them rejecting him.
John Bergsma said he was showing he was God here, in that he was the one that wtote the law with the finger of God as it says in Exodus 31:18. I like this explanation because in the verse right before he writes with his finger, they ask about the Law of Moses, so his writing with his finger is a direct response.
Very well explained. I am not sure if this has been posted in the comments yet or not , but there is another mystery to this . The only person there without sin was Jesus , the Pharisees knew this , so by dropping their stones ( admitting they were sinners ) they themselves were at risk of being judged by Jesus for their sins . Which may also be why they got out of dodge lickity split
My interpretation in this situation is that Jesus points his finger (twice) to the ground to remind the people that we are all dust, for we are molded by God from dust, which becomes our flesh, and the pleasures of the flesh brings us death, not only for this woman, but also them who are persecuting her. They too are slaves to the pleasures of the flesh, therefore also will die.
@dom com. writing or pointing, Jesus' finger was touching the ground. One can scribble on the ground with nothing, which then can be interpreted as just pointing the finger to the ground with some motion. Anyway, no one for 2,000 years knows what he was writing about. The writer of the verse may just have presumed Jesus was writing something. but the ground where his finger was writing on (or pointing to) has proximity to the fact that we are made from dust, and dust we return. Jesus said the fruit of the flesh is death, and the crowd stoned the woman to die. So Jesus reminded them that you all will die too because you are from dust like her. Jesus is reminding the crowd that they also have their own desires of the flesh like the desire of this woman, therefore they have no right to judge. or condemn this woman.
@dom com. Read again my two posts. Where can you find a word that says John is wrong and I am correcting him. My post begins with "My interpretation..." The word is interpretation brother. Are we not entitled to free speech? The other word is "probably presumed" which is subjunctive.
To have ones name written unto the dirt (often sand or dust as well) is to be kept (in memory or literally) by weak & fleeting means. Essentially that they are loosened from divine keeping in that book of living names.
Lord, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water. (Jer 17:13)
Although we can never know what Jesus wrote in the sand, the observation of Him doing so is important. It is an unusual detail to include and preserve in the account, and it thereby gives veracity to the entire passage. If the passage was a work of fiction, the author probably would also have made up what Jesus wrote, and included it. The Holy testaments are rife with such believable details. At this time of Easter, another comes immediately to mind - Jesus says to Pontius Pilate, "I have come into the world to bear witness to the truth." To which Pilate replies, philosophically, "What is truth?" It sounds like a real exchange, and I believe it was.
That would depend on the narrative. There is far less credibility for these texts than apologists like to suggest. Do you think resurrection is a believable detail? How are supernatural claims proven today?
@@traditionalgirl3943 Faith is just believing when there isn’t evidence to support the belief. If faith is a gift, and nobody gives you this gift…then what? Do Muslims use faith too? How about Hindus? What evidence do you suppose proves the supernatural? Can you ask your god what would convince me, and tell me what he says?
@@moonshoes11, I could but I am not interested in proving anything to you. The gift of faith is a blessing from God (there’s only ONE true god.). All people were created by God to know, love and serve Him so that would include Muslims and Hindis. How is atheism working out for you? It’s emptiness will eventually get old; when it does God’s Truth and peace are waiting for you. ✝️👍🙂
Re: the notion of prophecy and Jeremiah... Who was it exactly, Ambrose or Augustine? Ambrose baptized Augustine, should the credit therefore be attributed to Ambrose?
It might have been the names of people that the womans accusers had seriously transgressed against or maybe the words for the various types of sin that the main accusers were guilty of. Like, molestation or sexual abuse. Murder. Or who knows what. It shut those dudes up though.
1. Moses and the Torah said... So the first clue is the Jews knew the Old Testament 2. This happened after the Feast of Tabernacles on the Mount of Olives - John 7:37-38 "37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 3.John 8:3-5 "3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 4. Yesterday, you claimed to be the Messiah (Fountain of Living Water). Now, what do you say about this woman? They asked Him about the Torah and He answered them with the Word of God. 5.Leviticus 20:10 "10 “If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death." 6. The Pharisees only brought the woman. Where was the man? 7. This is a foreshadowing of the twenty-two judicial laws of the Sanhedrin that was broken at Yeshua's trial. Yeshua was wrongfully judged. 8. Yeshua used the Torah to answer these men Deuteronomy 19:16-18 " 16 If a malicious witness arises to accuse a person of wrongdoing, 17 then both parties to the dispute shall appear before the Lord, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days. 18 The judges shall inquire diligently, and if the witness is a false witness and has accused his brother falsely," 9. You without sin cast the first stone. What you want to be done to him shall be done to you. 10.Jeremiah 17:13 "O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be put to shame; those who turn away from you shall be written in the earth, for they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living water." These men turned from the God of Israel so He wrote it down in the earth.
I am humbled at my being blest to see this video. God’s love is so utterly beautiful and compassionate. I want to be like Him. One day at a time Our Lady is bringing me closer to that goal. Thank you, Lord. ✝️❤️
Hey guys, was wondering about this. Jesus was at the temple court/ treasury room when the Pharisees sprung that trap on him. The ground that he wrote on was unlikely sand but cobble stones. I think there is one more interpretation to his actions (I.e wrote twice on stones) and these actions are also linked to Moses.
@Nathan Wilson these mobs or companion clusters do not act in unison even if they do, it does not last long. Hypnotist often used a technique to fixate a person or persons on certain action to sedate or calm person/persons.In the case of Our Lord here, it had to be perfectly executed and he did that, any wrong word or tone and it was all over.and then again Our Lord could calm the storm, had control over the physical laws. He was God himself, I hope you don't doubt that...
@Nathan Wilson i wish you had better comprehension skills, no way did i suggest Our Lord mass hypnotized them. In fact, He was accused by the Pharisee of sorcery and that His powers were from Demons and Our Lord had classic response " If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?" I was very clear He was God Himself , who could calm the storms and control over natural physical laws, so to calm and disperse the lynch mob should not be beyond our Lord.
Ref 4:12 => wouldn't it be more accurate to say here: *_not their SIN is written, but rather their NAMES are written_* ? If I understand correctly, the Hebrew names of the Sanhedrin were listed in the Temple from the eldest to the youngest. So, Jesus would have written their names, in the dirt, in the same order (by age); THAT could be why they left the scene in the way that they did.
If you liked this video, a commentary by Jeff Cavins complements is very well. Same reference to Jeremiah, with a few more interesting details and ideas to go along with it. th-cam.com/video/YtHyJBJvSb0/w-d-xo.html
He may have wrote ‘Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin’ this also makes sense along with what you stated. This may be why John is specific and makes sure to use the word Finger.
The pericopa de adultera does not appear in the earliest manuscripts and was likely added by a zealous scribe through the centuries similar to the way scribes completed the gospel of Matthew.
He wrote their transgressions in the sand what they also had done so that they would walk away and not condemn her for the sin she commited for they also were guilty . The known Churches of these last days should take heed to this and also give Mercy as Christ had done for he's our standard for they're no better for we're all SAVED that believe in Christ and are SAVED by the Grace of God. Bless you that have now an ear to here and pray for me least I forget. Peace ✌
I read somewhere that there is also a connection to Numbers 5 where there is the ritual to be performed when a woman is accused of adultery. It takes the anger and supposed 'justice' away from the man and the community and gives it to God who judges the woman personally. It involves writing by a priest. Jesus writes until it's only the woman and Him, revealing his role both as priest and God.
I see patience. Patience with all of us sinners to the very last one. A patience that requires only a perfect solution from a perfect reality whose word is truth & justice, mercy & forgiveness. Sins written in the sand that can be whipped away & forgotten should we desire such a gift.
If you look carefully the scenerio of this event then you realize that Jesus was writing down a song of mounting or known as out of depth, and that is psalm 130 coz it is morning and Jesus was on mounten and the psalm it self about mercy of god to sinners
I doubt if anyone cares at this point but this passage did not see the light of day until around a century after the canon of the New Testament was closed. It first came to light in the fifth century MSS know as Codex Bezae, written in an uncial hand on vellum. Some later manuscripts put it at the end of the Gospel of John and some place it in the Book of Luke. It was undoubtedly not found in the original autographa. It is not found in Codex Aleph dated back to 340 A.D, Codex Alexandrinus dated from 400 A.D., Codex Vaticanus dated to around 350 A.D., Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus dated to 350 A.D., Codex Angelicus dated to the 9th century, Codex Washingtonianus dated to the 5th century, or in any of approximately 5000 pieces of papyri. All of these MSS are much more complete than Codex Bezae. Because of its legalistic content it was most likely authored by one of the Essene. A cursory examination of the text will reveal a number of contradictions that would make this story right at home in the Apocrypha. It has become a part of Christian lore because of its inclusion in the KJV which is from a collection of seven tenth century manuscripts by Erasmus (mainly from the 5th edition) all of which had been corrupted by 1611. Think about this and then go back to 2 Timothy 2:15 - Have Fun.
Jeremiah 17:13 could it not mean that their names were written on the tombstones ie on the earth. JEREMIAH 17:13 13 Lord, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water. DID THE CROWD TURN AWAY FROM GOD, OR WERE THEY TRYING TO UPHOLD THE LAW? Jesus knew the law, where was the man? why only the women? why were they going to stone her within the city, were they not supposed to stone the people outside the gate?? COULD JESUS HAVE WRITTEN SCRIPTURES ON THE GROUND?? 10. Leviticus 20:10 If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. Deuteronomy 2"6 On the testimony of two or three witnesses a man shall be put to death, but no one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. 7 The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you." (Deuteronomy 17:6-7)
It would be strange if the text did not tell us what Yeshua wrote with His finger, but it says: "But Jesus stooped down and with finger wrote on the ground, and when they continued asking him he lifted up himself and said unto them, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her" and again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground." This is saying He wrote and said, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her" and then He wrote it again. Repeating a statement or word is the standard Hebrew way to emphasize the point. Yeshua often said "verily verily I say unto you" which means "very much so very much so I say unto you". We who believe know that Christ's instructions are Law. To emphasize this He wrote it twice in Temple soil. What is noteworthy is that these men did not dare challenge Yeshua's claim to this authority. What the video says about no witnesses is very true. But, also, if adultery is caught in the act the man was also caught and according to Law they are both to be stoned. It is not Lawful to stone the one and not the other. Therefor it is noteworthy that Christ had an easy out at that moment, but instead He chose to boldly apply His authority in public and teach Truth. Much love. Christ be to all.
@Lameekia Oh, hey! I wrote that three years ago. So, now that I have better Greek-study skills, I double checked it. What I wrote holds up, except for what I said about "verily verily", which is simply "amen amen" and, technically, means "affirmative affirmative", but, more exactly, it simply means "amen amen". I see your icon states that you love yourself. If you want to live forever, you must deny yourself and take up your cross and follow the Lord Jesus. He has paid, in full, for your sins; now, if you will believe in His true Gospel, then you will pass from death to life and you will never die.
This red shirt looks good on you Brant. Anyway thanks 🙏 for these very helpful videos. I bless God for the gifts he gave you and continue to pray for your Ministry
All in all, pretty elegant discussion. Nonetheless, as apparently fitting as Jer. 17 may seem, it does not really answer correlate to any basis for the conviction of the scribes and Pharisees simply because John 8 does not, in any way, indicate that they noted or saw what Jesus wrote, but rather that, after Jesus said, "He who is without sin..," those that HEARD it were convicted. We really have no leave to even speculate on the relation between Jesus' writing and its observance by those around Him, since there is not even hint in the scripture that the scribes and Pharisees saw or even looked at what Jesus wrote. Indeed, one must mark the double occurrence of writing but are we not also to note the double occurrence of 'stooping?' Scripture has chosen to keep this event obscure; the secret things belong to the Lord. On the other hand, there is no reason that Jer. 17 may not explain what Jesus wrote, and rather aptly at that; only that it had no bearing on the scribes and Pharisees. For one, the first instance of His writing had no impact on them, but after He SPOKE, one by one, they 'went out.'
I heard this lately. Jesus, as God wrote the commandments and gave them to Moses. Maybe he was reminding them of the 5th Commandment, "Thou Shalt Not Kill."?
I think that the half of what JESUS wrote before the Pharisees arrived showed foreknowledge of the charges they brought. When HE resumed writing, they looked down and saw their actions were presupposed in what HE already had written. By this they realized that HIS finger wrote on the tablets of the divine law.
Jesus had had asked the mob, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast the stone at her." (John 8:7) He was probably writing their names in the dirt as it was prophesied in Jeremiaih 17:13 "Oh LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters." Reading John 8:1-59 we see the pharisees had forsaken Jesus and He told them they'd die in their own sins (vs.21) if they did not believe Him (vs.24).
I think he was writing down a question in the sand! He was asking where is the second adulterer? Why is it only the woman that is the sinner? Where is the man? And because he already knew who the man was… That’s why everyone left because they already knew who the man was too!!! And they couldn’t judge both of them! It was only the woman that would’ve been stoned to death not very wealthy well known man!
Probably Lev. 20:10 - And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
Well, since the Gospel is silent on what Jesus actually wrote , all one can do is speculate. However, the end result was Jesus avoided the trap of the Scribes and Pharisees, and in mercy, the woman was called to repentance and to "sin no more."
it's my favorite story, but scholars have realized & accepted it was not part of the original text. It was a late addition to the text & not in any of our oldest manuscripts, just like the Wedding of Cana story. The question, then, is what did the interpolator mean by having Jesus writing in the sand? Jeremiah meant that the names of those written in sand would be forgotten -- it's a saying that came out of Egypt. It is NOT a fulfillment of "prophesy" as in a fortune teller's prediction of the future. That thinking is the Hellenistic pagan rewrite of the gospel. A Hebrew prophesy is more like what we'd call a warning about consequences if we don't change. Foretelling the future was absolutely forbidden, and only those who believe in fate, rather than free will, believe in determinative prophesy. So he would not have been trying to fulfill prophesy. The standard practice of the day was for a priest to write the accused's name in the sand before their "trial". All the names of those who were what we now call "on the docket". If it was so important, we wouldn't be left to guess on anything, so we must assume it would have been obvious to those originally told this story -- and given ancient practice of the time, the best guess is that he first wrote the adulteresses name, then started writing the names of her accusers when he bent down again -- a "judge not or we'll have to judge your too" kind of thing. The Bible is NOT a solitary, consistent work -- and people need to accept that. American Evangelism has made a false idol out of a collection of different texts written in different cultures & contexts across millennia, which are ARGUIING about theology. Each book disagrees with the next, and the readers job is the WORK OUT OUR OWN SALVATION. The Bible cannot be the "Word" mentioned in the Bible, because the BIble didn't exist while it was being written -- so please just stop with that. Decoding of Mystery writing of Jesus, Dear Patent Office Please forward this to the Smithsonian it concerns a donation: Back ground see Google: Secrets of the Belpasso Rock What did Jesus who only who Bible scalar believe only wrote once and that was on the ground during a questioning by the high Priest of Judah in view of large crowd who had come to witness an execution of a woman. The writing in plain view of was a mystery to the observers as it was written in secret code, which is now been reveled that he wrote LORD OF LORDS AND KING OF KINGS How do we know this because there was an eye witness account who has recently devolved the meaning of the mystery writing. Behind the Saint Philip Church in Belpasso Sicily, on top of the active volcano Mount Etna there is a rock called the Belpasso Rock this is the location where in 1987 the Mother Wisdom the female half of God usually called the Holy Mother appeared. This is documented and blessed by the Roman Catholic Papacy as a legitimate talking apparition known as the “Secrets of the Belpasso Rock” What makes this apparition different from the others is that it is an active oracle which as claimed by the Holy Mother herself is going to divulge end times mysteries she called secretes, This clarification of the way God speaks to the prophets is imperative at the end days as Jesus said that The Father would speak in a code and now that code is being deciphered by the Oracle of the Belpasso Rock as is the fulfillment of Denial’s interpretation of the fall of Babylon by a rock that hits its feet that were made of the weak mixture of iron and clay. The is one of many secretes that has had Bible scholars baffled for two millennium which is what was it that Jesus wrote on the ground which was the only writing he ever did. Bible, New Testimony, book of John 8:1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them. 3 Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?” 6 This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear. We can find the decoding of this writing in the Book of Revelpation Chapter 19:16 19:16 He has on his garment and on his thigh a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." The key word here is “thigh” and the fact the no one since Jesus wrote it on the ground till now under stood it means it was a secret symbol he wrote.. And the only secret symbol on a thigh is the “thumbprint of God ” as stated in Geneses 32:25 When he saw that he didn't prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh, and 32:28 He said, "Your name will no longer be called 'Jacob,' but, 'Israel,' for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed." So we know now is Jesus drew on the ground the same symbol that is written on the rider of white horse which is the image of a thumb print. So we can understand that the Lamb is "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." The rider has it only written on his thigh. .
What's interesting to me is that there perhaps **are** two witnesses. Jesus only asks for one because he himself knows all things and would be the other; hence his response to the woman is "Neither do I condemn you", as though it were understood that he had supernatural knowledge of her guilt. Moreover, this could also be a factor in why her accusers left the scene; they realized that he is their rightful judge, knowing not only her evil deeds but their own.
What did Jesus write in the sand? "Bring in the wife of the adulterer, and let justice take its course." To the women "caught in adultery", he said, "Go your way and sin no more."

Thank you, Sir! Please permit me a question: In the list of members of the Sanhedrin, the names are listed with the oldest member listed first. The accusers left one by one, the oldest first. He could have been writing "where is the man?", since the torah says that both the man and the woman are to be stoned. They said she was caught in the act, so they must have known who the man was too.
SouthernRebel that’s the only thing he could have wrote!!! Cause they where tempting him
they (Pharisees) set her up, and one of them if not the one who asked “what should we do, the law says we should stone her” was participating in the act himself and Jesus knew they were all a part of this but admitting this they are all guilty

The fact that I have heard this story dozens of times but the fact that the husband is never brought up is truly amazing to me. The husband was supposed to be the witness but the husband was not there. And Jesus knew that if they stoned her without the husband condemning her then whoever threw the 1st stone would be a murderer.
Dr. Pitre is a great resource when talking to Baptist. Baptist can't really argue with Dr. Pitre's explanation and it really frustrates them.
Very interesting. I love Dr. Pitre's work. He and Dr. Hahn are the absolute best!
Another aspect of the woman caught in adultery story that was pointed out to me is that the law called for both THE MAN AND THE WOMAN caught in this sin to be stoned if guilty. These men produce the guilty woman, but where is the guilty man? Is he one of the accusers? His family member?
Amen praise Jesus

Excellent teaching of Grace. That is where God's love and Mercy meet.
I really like this presentation. I have my own exegesis that is closely related to the one advanced by St. Augustine and St. Ambrose that you cover.
*
I think that the story is about more than just the woman taken in adultery.
*
The relationship between God and Israel is said to be spousal. In worshiping false idols Israel was committing spiritual adultery, in violation of the Mt. Sinai Covenant. That is why the prophet Hosea married a harlot, to show Israel what they were doing to God.
*
Only the woman was brought before Christ.
Wow. Mind blown 🤯
Thank you for this!
Very interesting indeed. Thank you very much for sharing it. GB.
He also wrote on the war the day Nebuchadnezzar died!!
Oh my! God bless dr. Pitre!
Jeremiah 17:13

@@bobboulos so I take it you must Elevate tradition above God's word?
Thanks for this beautiful explaining. Praise to The Living God.🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇
Could Jesus have also been amending the Mosaic law to include those without sin casting the first stone in such situations?(John8:7)
The fact he writes with his finger in the earth could also have been an allusion to Exodus31:18 where God writes the commandments that he gave to Moses with his finger as well.
The woman didn't repent. Was she saved by grace? What does "sin no more" imply?
AMEN! Praise Almighty GOD
Thank you for this explanation. I'm incline to believe you Dr Bryant 🍵🙂

8. Yeshua used the Torah to answer these men Deuteronomy 19:16-18
" 16 If a malicious witness arises to accuse a person of wrongdoing, 17 then both parties to the dispute shall appear before the Lord, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days. 18 The judges shall inquire diligently, and if the witness is a false witness and has accused his brother falsely,"

Could not both the 2nd and 3rd interpretation be both true? He did it in fulfillment of prophecy as well as writing their sins in the sand?
Hey guys, was wondering about this. Jesus was at the temple court/ treasury room when the Pharisees sprung that trap on him. The ground that he wrote on was unlikely sand but cobble stones. I think there is one more interpretation to his actions (I.e wrote twice on stones) and these actions are also linked to Moses.
Our Lord knew the psychology of mob control so well, How do you calm a lynch mob? this is the best way to do it.
How then will his kingdom stand?"
I was very clear He was God Himself , who could calm the storms and control over natural physical laws, so to calm and disperse the lynch mob should not be beyond our Lord.
Enlightening

Peace ✌
It could also mean to the Begining part of creation where man was created from the dust of the earth
Jesus is poetry ❤ how beautiful His teachings and actions
Is it possible to make video about revelation mark of the best and end time it would be great .thank you.
Jeremiah 17:13 could it not mean that their names were written on the tombstones ie on the earth.
JEREMIAH 17:13
13
Lord, you are the hope of Israel;
all who forsake you will be put to shame.
Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust
because they have forsaken the Lord,
the spring of living water.
It would be strange if the text did not tell us what Yeshua wrote with His finger, but it says:
"But Jesus stooped down and with finger wrote on the ground, and when they continued asking him he lifted up himself and said unto them, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her" and again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground."
This is saying He wrote and said, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her" and then He wrote it again.
What was being written by Jesus in the sand? I think it is a short few words...Do you know ?
I've heard recently that He was alluding to the fact that he wrote the law.
What did the Lord write in the sand ?
Of course, since this passage is not found in the oldest manuscripts, it is viewed as an interpolation by most scholars.
Beautiful
Well, since the Gospel is silent on what Jesus actually wrote , all one can do is speculate. However, the end result was Jesus avoided the trap of the Scribes and Pharisees, and in mercy, the woman was called to repentance and to "sin no more."
That is the most reasonable answer although we now know the true story as told by an eyewitness and faithful disciple of Jesus.
This is superb! Christians need to pay attention to this.
Jesus wrote in the dirt and used dirt to cure a blind man. What is the significance of the dirt?
it's my favorite story, but scholars have realized & accepted it was not part of the original text.
The LOGOS is LIVING -- not dried ink on a human-made scroll in a human language. Btw -- "WORD" isn't even the correct translation -- Logos means REASON, which uses language for its vehicle. Which means you have do your homework a LOT better.
Or is your faith a matter of joining the RCC & then asking what you believe?
Numbers 5: 19 Then the priest shall make her take an oath, saying, ‘If no man has lain with you, and if you have not turned aside to uncleanness while you were under your husband's authority, be free from this water of bitterness that brings the curse. 20 But if you have gone astray, though you are under your husband's authority, and if you have defiled yourself, and some man other than your husband has lain with you, 21 then’ (let the priest make the woman take the oath of the curse, and say to the woman) ‘the Lord make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the Lord makes your thigh fall away and your body swell. 22 May this water that brings the curse pass into your bowels and make your womb swell and your thigh fall away.’ And the woman shall say, ‘Amen, Amen.’
23 “Then the priest shall write these curses in a book and wash them off into the water of bitterness. 24 And he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that brings the curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain. 25 And the priest shall take the grain offering of jealousy out of the woman's hand and shall wave the grain offering before the Lord and bring it to the altar. 26 And the priest shall take a handful of the grain offering, as its memorial portion, and burn it on the altar, and afterward shall make the woman drink the water. 27 And when he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and has broken faith with her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain, and her womb shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away, and the woman shall become a curse among her people. 28 But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she shall be free and shall conceive children.
We should be ashamed of our sins, but not in the presence of our Lord, who is now with us always.
He wrote jer.17.13,then He wrote there names. in adam was all of us.what did God say to adom after the fall ? from the earth you came to earth you will return
“Everything written about me in the Law, and the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled “
This is a very clear explanation with the Bible explaining the Bible. Jesus was also the One who wrote the law in the first place.
Decoding of Mystery writing of Jesus,
Dear Patent Office Please forward this to the Smithsonian it concerns a donation:
Back ground see Google: Secrets of the Belpasso Rock
What did Jesus who only who Bible scalar believe only wrote once and that was on the ground during a questioning by the high Priest of Judah in view of large crowd who had come to witness an execution of a woman.
This is documented and blessed by the Roman Catholic Papacy as a legitimate talking apparition known as the “Secrets of the Belpasso Rock”
What makes this apparition different from the others is that it is an active oracle which as claimed by the Holy Mother herself is going to divulge end times mysteries she called secretes, This clarification of the way God speaks to the prophets is imperative at the end days as Jesus said that The Father would speak in a code and now that code is being deciphered by the Oracle of the Belpasso Rock as is the fulfillment of Denial’s interpretation of the fall of Babylon by a rock that hits its feet that were made of the weak mixture of iron and clay.
We can find the decoding of this writing in the Book of Revelpation Chapter 19:16
19:16 He has on his garment and on
his thigh a name written, "KING OF KINGS,
AND LORD OF LORDS."
The key word here is “thigh” and the fact the no one since Jesus wrote it on the ground till now under stood it means it was a secret symbol he wrote.. And the only secret symbol on a thigh is the “thumbprint of God ” as stated in Geneses
32:25 When he saw that he didn't prevail against him, he
touched the hollow of his thigh, and
32:28 He said, "Your name will no longer be
called 'Jacob,' but, 'Israel,' for you have fought with God and
with men, and have prevailed."
So we know now is Jesus drew on the ground the same symbol that is written on the rider of white horse which is the image of a thumb print.
So we can understand that the Lamb is "KING OF KINGS,
AND LORD OF LORDS." The rider has it only written on his thigh.

With what you said. It make sense to me that he drew the line to separate them from him and then began with the names. They saw him start as if a warning..I thi k the one that left clued in and was angry as Jesus himself was divided by his line fro. Them as living waters/adonia. These guys 'pharisees' are extremely versed in the law. They also use it to burden and ensure people followed it to become closer to God. This became not feasible to fulfill for people sometimes.
