The last spell that Clone Frieren used is so interesting in terms of world building.
It seems to be Frierens' Ace in the Hole seeing as the last time she used it was presumably against the Demon King.
And more than that is the fact that Fern, who in her own right is a highly skilled mage, can't even understand it.
The Major point of that scene (And, what this particular version of the subtitles fails to express), is that Fern CANNOT comprehend this attack.
She obviously can tell she is under attack, but she cannot sense any mana, nor can she recognize this attack as a spell.
Really consider what that means. This isn't just a spell Fern doesn't know or a principle she doesn't understand.
This spell is either so fundamentally different and/or so absurdly advanced, that Ferns own body, her very SENSES, and all the knowledge and experience she has as a mage, cannot even begin to comprehend what Frieren is doing in this moment.
This spell is either an entirely different form of magic, like how the Divine Magic of priests is different from Humanities Magic that Mages use (Maybe Elven Magic???).
Or it functions at such an advanced scale that a normal human mage doesn't have enough perspective to see it (Kinda like how people are too small to see the curvature of the Earth).
All this combined leads to Ferns' realization of the "True Heights of Magic". Not the flashy and powerful spells she was using, but a simple pushing spell that is so beyond her comprehension she cannot recognize it as more than that,
My theory as of now (anime only) is that it might be the idea of making ideas into reality made into its most ideal form, no mana manipulation or spell necessary. Just thinking you want to push someone away (maybe out of fear for the clone's case) and just making it just happen. Given the focus of this imagination magic system, I wouldn't be surprised if this is just the ideal of that.

@humourlessjester3584 my take on it is that whatever spell Frieren casts isn't manifesting her will into reality but is actually changing reality. Like instead of levitating an object (imagining it defying gravity) she instead is changing gravity itself so that now it is way stronger and the wall is "down". Fern can't detect any mana or recognize it as an attack because Frieren isn't putting any mana into Fern and technically isn't attacking her. Fern was in a pocket of space Frieren created, where reality works differently.
While some are theorizing that the height of magic is a form of reality warping.
I personally think that its more likely some form of absolute manipulation mana. Like imagine something like Magneto's powers but this time for mana.
@@jeological5394 it's a fair theory, but it's difficult because Fern says she can't detect any mana-and we know even Frieren can't hide her mana and cast at the same time (when she was capturing the Stille)
From Ubel's "Magic is about visualization." to Fern's "This is the the height of magic." witnessing clone Frieren do magic by visualization and knocked her off the wall without staff/hands. Peak episode.
This episode really opens eyes for us about how strong Frieren is. And how strong is fucking Himmel?

Ubel is a prodigy. Fern studies and has an amazing teacher with Frieren so her magic is powerful. Ubel goes off imagination, intuition, and empathy. The magic is explained Ubel very unique and strong. Sense is right about how Ubel doesn't think like person. Because she is able to ignore logic to imagine and visualize something she knows for a fact to be impossible.
Not neccessarily, Ubel has only shown two spells (the cutting spell and the binding spell) as she can only learn spells through feeling (she can learn another person’s spell if she empathises with them) and that’s the main reason she can do what she does. She could never visualise cutting through magically reinforced cloth or hair if she 1. understood how the defensive magic worked or could even see it and 2. if she wasn’t delusional and her mind worked properly
Methode is a beast! She fought Clone Fern for at least a solid while and might have even killed her. Plus she has great senses, can Heal, and has Ara Ara energy.
Sein truly missed out
Methode's counter spell is so cool too. She used it against the Gargoyles and the clone used it against Laufen's wiggly spear. On top of that she has binding magic and at least dabbled in hypnosis. She wasn't kidding when she said she has many talents.

She is literally the effect mage build. All others have spells they refined to be powerful and have a strong element they perform with vast destructiv power or have a powerful technique to bind or capture. Methode has effects in a vast repertoire to counter almost anything. She is without a doubt one of the strongest in the pack. I would say:
1. Frieren
2. Methode
3. Denken
4. Wirbel
5. Übel
6. Fern
I'd put Denken and Fern above Methode imo. She'd be #4, above Wirbel and Ubel @@nikolah.8472
That area where they fought was wrecked. I'm sad we didn't get to see that fight. I think Clone Fern was pushing Methode hard. She looks like she collapses in relic that the clone dispersed.

Gotta love Ubel, using her backstory to reinforce how strongly magic is based on imagery and imagination is great. Her target of focus when cutting Berg or Sense's clone down was not on the Defensive magic, but more so on the objects that are universally known to be cuttable. Even her opponents can't unimagine the concept of clothes or hair being cut, then there is no way for them to defend against it.
Another amazing thing this anime does is not leaving out side characters into being side characters, it feels like everything has a soul and is a person and you learn about them really good.
Well, they can defend against it. We saw Wirbel do it.
It's not just imagining it's visualization of that concept, she's instinctual her magic works through her feelings, this also has the added benefit allowing Ubel to learn magic quicker than usual as most people learn spells through analysis and understanding the spell
RIP Fern's staff. I love how everyone reacted to that since we've seen her grow up with it.
19:58 you don't need a staff to cast or direct spells, we saw in episode 10 how flamme was able to evaporate three general demons instantly with her bare hands.

I'm guessing the staff gives them a stat boost to casting. Maybe it makes mana consumption lower, enhances their accuracy or enhances their magic effects. And I would guess it also just works as a funnel/focus so many probably can't even do magic without it. I think we can maybe assume that Fern also needs her staff to cast since she had to get it back before fighting Lügner. I highly doubt she would be unable to fire a Zoltraak without a staff at all but we at least haven't see her do it yet.
I think you don't need a staff when you are using elemental magic just like Richter is straight up earthbending or when Frieren used wind blades to cut off Draht's arms.

@@boboyo3140 😱🤯 ooooh. Based on what you said we could probably infer that the complexity of magic/level of visualization is also a factor in spell casting. Serie can free form complex spells while we also have Kanne who not only needs a staff but also a source of water.
This ep is filled with details too
1. The lightings and the camera angles in the Sense vs Ubel scene slowly showed us the shift of superiority between the two mages. Ubel in the shadow -> into the light; Sense brighten -> overcast.
Upper/lower camera angle shifts.
2. Frieren's golem magic. That magic was showcased early in the series in the form of a dancing golem. It's telling us again that a folk magic (as oppose to the academic magic) could be extremely powerful in the right hands.
3. The stare "magic". the magic circle is a pentagonal star instead of the usual hexagonal star (eg. Zoltrak) plus Frieren's clone casts that with no arms. That's why Fern doesn't recognize that as a spell. It may not actually be a magic spell.
This "magic" also could be the one Frieren casted to kill the demon general that invaded her village.
4. There were already 2 treasure chest mimics destroyed in the treasure room scene.
Good observation! Also for point 3 I rechecked eps 10 and the remains of the attack against Basalt does look like its made from similar 'force push' spell

Agree with the third. It's probably the first time she used that in extreme desperation.
It's said that, compared to human magic, demon magic is "closer to fairy tale magic". Humans approach magic as a science, whereas demons have an instinctual grasp. It's implied in this episode that Ubel's mindset is more like a demon's than a human's. I think that's what unsettled Sense.
People commenting are to hung up because of the frequent mentioning of "visualization". It is not how it works directly for Übel. Her way to visualize is the feeling she gets out of it. She reproduces how it feels to cut things and therefore can cut everything. She is wired differently.

i think it has more to do with the clones dissapearing maybe, you don't see any replica of the people who are out of the dungeon, so it's better to leave them half dead.

@@gino85455 It has the ability to make clones for everyone who enters the dungeon since the beginning, as mentioned before. Then later, another Ubel clone showed up because more were being made, so there's no reason to leave them half dead for that.
Yeah, people somehow miss the significance of clone Sense always missing the heart versus clone Frieren going for the kill shot. The clones think the same way that their originals do, so this means that Sense really is a pacifist like she said (or, at least, as much of a pacifist as one can be in this world), while Frieren isn't.
for some reason i grabbed this little moment. when Lawine was running towards her clone in slomotion, you can see her legs up close. and the laces on her boots were moving. FREAKING LACES! the level of detail in this show is astounding

Sense is this deadly, yes. But you forget that she's a pacificist. She probably never goes for the kill as a mage. So her replica is most probably wired to incapacitate instead of killing instantly.
Just a reminder, but Freiren has done spells without her staff. Like when she fought the demon who went inside her jail.
Yeah unlikely she pulled out "the height of magic" (or even a lesser form) for freaking Draht of all people. We also saw Flamme cast without a staff.

I think the reason that Sense's replica doesn't kill people is because she's a pacifist, as she says herself. She likely has this habit of not killing people so deeply engraved into her being, that even her replica is only able to incapacitate her opponents without killing them outright.
There is also the potential that the clones try to avoid instantly killing their opponents so more clones can be made. We don't know what happens to a clone if the real one dies, but it's unlikely the Spiegel can make a new copy when the original is dead.
@@sirmcdust5572 Methode mentioned that the Fern clone is likely to immediately kill whoever it sees (of course we don't see that) and the Spiegel also created a second Lawine clone after she was likely already outside, so it might be able to save the originals "data" at least for a short while.
Of course, we as the viewers neither have all the information, nor the ability to study the Spiegel in universe, so theorizing is all that's left.
I personally will stick with the pacifist Sense theory in this regard.
@@sirmcdust5572 A small addendum to my previous comment: I just checked something in the Manga and during Lawine's explanation of the Spiegel with the flashback where one of her brother's expedition group gets wiped out, there is a panel where you can see the clones standing over the corpses of the group.
Since it is only a flashback told by someone who wasn't even there when it happened this might not be entirely accurate, but would give more credit to the theory that the clones can persist after the originals are dead.
(I checked the Manga since it was faster, I don't remember the specific scene in the Anime and am to lazy to check right now)
@@ShyGuy261 Yeah that was definitely a thing so an existing clone will persist even if the original is dead. But I'd still argue it's unlikely the Spiegel can make a new clone (in case the existing one is killed) of a dead person. So not killing their opponents would still be an advantage since that person's clone could continue being deployed.
@@ShyGuy261 Oh I forgot Lawine reappeared. Sure she could just have been copied again just before the Golem got her outside but how likely is that really. I liked the idea of the clones keeping them alive for reinforcements but at this point there is barely any proof for that left.

That psychic attack by clone Frieren is probably demon magic, since mages don't recognize curses as magic. Frieren learnt it but since Fern doesn't know it, she doesn't recognize it as a spell.
Ubel's ability to cut through that guy's cloak reminded me of something from Undead Unluck. Her situation with magic is just like Victor's reflexes.
Every person has a reflex of self preservation when hitting something so that they don't break their fist. It is only logical. But Victor doesn't have that reflex because after billions of years of living, he has become accustomed to the fact that he'll just regenerate. Similarly, even though Ubel knew that cloak was impenetrable, she managed to visualize being able to cut it. That's why Sense believed she doesn't think like a human. Something as illogical as that is not something a human mind can achieve.

I did in fact look this up, but being stabbed to through the heart, especially with something as thin as Sense' Hair Needles isn't instant death, you can live for a few hours apparently... In fact, apparently many fighting techniques don't even consider it a valid location to attack since it's fairly hard to reach. This obviously doesn't apply to mages, but it is a fun fact.
Finally, I don't think the Clones would want to kill their target when they could just force them to retreat and that would solve the Spiegel's Biggest Issue, the fact that its final boss is in a 2 v 1, allowing the Clones to save Mana and rush there rather than engage in a potentially lengthy mage battle.
Always surprised by the amount of those who forgot Ubel killed an instructor.

3:42 "she keeps missing the heart" You have to remember that Sense repeatedly said she's a literal pacifist. Because of this, I don't think the clone intended to kill anyone and always gave them the chance to escape. It's truly the perfect test for her, and I bet she chose it because she knows the clones are based on the mages' memories and abilities.
The Scary Thing is that the Clone basically knew it "Lost" bc. it wouldnt have a Chance in that State against her Original anymore.
So it basically tried to kill Off Fern as fast as possible out of Pure killing Instinct. The Datail of her Eye Tracing shows us that it knew what was coming.
3:30 - Kinda late, but that is probably because Sense is a pacifist and doesn't want to actually kill anybody, and since the clone replicates everything that she does, she fights in the same, non-lethal way: give them enough injuries that they need to leave/are defeated, but not enough to instantly kill them.

I like that Ubel's "eyes of a killer" is a thing because it makes a concept of a design who already have killed. Because if you observe closely, Frieren, Denken and even Richter have somewhat similar eye designs.
Also I wonder why Ubel's clone specifically casted Sorganeil on Land. It makes me think that it wasn't the Spiegel that revived the clones but Land's clone (by the Spiegel) did it. Land's technique is a mystery but if he can make a bottle illusion, then he maybe could make people too?
I honestly had the same thought first time I saw them revived, but now that I think about it, it's probably really hard to make clones of (effectively) living things, so he can probably only do himself. Otherwise we would probably see like 3 of each of them lol.

Sure ubel ultimately dealt the finishing blow but if not for land she would have already lost to her clone
@@-quoreo-7196 I imagine Ubel clone did have Denken as a priority but in this case he was partially covered by Ubel and Land, so he went to the second best option instead (Ubel also atacked Land first the first time the clone found them, so at least thats consistent). I think they just got lucky Denken wasn´t a valid target.
That word Fern say, shes not recognize the attack as a magic spell bring new possibility to the world building.
Either its an exclusive to elf by simply never teached outside themself by their tradition.
Or its within their blood/lineage, only they can do it.
Which make alot of sense why the demon king hunted down every elf.
Or maybe its just a really old spell that almost nobody ever see/heard of.

chapter is called "Pinnacle of magic" which make more sense, am spanish native and got to see the episode real soon on friday, so i got it in japanese english sub, then spanish sub, then english official sub.... sometimes translation is weird
My take on the last spell is not about how it works, but what it represents. We see clone Frieren's expression change into a death stare while she did that. Imo Frieren is somewhat vengeful and prideful deep inside. That spell basically makes her focus on the person/entity that did fatal damage to her and single in with the intent to kill, while leaving herself wide open.
If we go back to when she met Flamme we can see they both share a pretty deep hatred towards demons. This last resort spell, must've been constructed with demons/demon king in mind. Meaning that in Frieren's mind the one that would deal fatal damage to her is probably going to be the demon king or a high rank demon, so that spell might be a darker spin on magic of some kind in response to her hatred towards demons.
Ubel always struck me as someone who has a connection/outlook on magic more akin to that demons have than humans, actually, her mind might be more similar in general than not.
But it's interesting that anyone that actually simply relies on the hexagon wall defense magic, Ubel's magic is useless against them. She was able to defeat only adversaries that do not use those. Like the two first class mages - cloak and hair just don't work, regardless of how strong they think their magic made them to be.
But with Solganiel and cutting magic together (where her adversaries cannot use the hexagon wall) she is quite invincible if she gets the Solganiel out.
and if she gets Land clone skill too wold cover for much of her glass cannon nature.... man i can see Ubel becoming a big problem

I highly recommend the OP and ED’s for both seasons of Zombie Land Saga. As well as a lot of the songs. Very well produced and make for the anime itself. I also highly recommend checking out the OP for Domestic Girlfriend. So many shows with amazing songs I’d recommend.

The whole situation with Clone Frieren's final spell... What if that was elven magic? The whole series they are always talking about human magic, and 2 of the 3 elves we have met seem to be quite proficient at it's use. But perhaps Fern didn't recognize it because it was not a spell based in human magic at all?
I love that there are at least two other dead mimics in the shot.

Fern is really good, but she's still young. She really isn't the strongest among the examines even excluding Frieren. Denken and Methode in particular are definitely stronger, Wirbel too if it's a 1v1.
I think she also suffers the stark syndrome too.
Where she really doesnt know how strong she can be because she is always in frieren's shadow.

Frieren bended reality in the end. The peak of magic cant be recognized as magic because it becomes like a natural phenomenon. Frieren created a gravity force that became a natural thing. It cant be blocked or sensed Without analyse the spell and principles behind it. In a battle it would be impossible to handle if you dont know it beforehand because you dont have the time to analyse and counter

Idk, it did feel kind of disappointing that they were all like “a human mage will kill you”, but then fern isn’t able to kill her. Not that the fight was bad in any way, it was amazing, just feel like the payoff could’ve been better.
Fern is not experienced yet. Payoff is in the future when she develops more. Character development.

In the next episode we see the Lernen, who’s the first ‘first class mage’ and noticed that Frieren hides her mana (the first person to do so since the demon king) + Serie mentions how in a battle Lernen could win against Frieren
