I wonder if you should recommend a different brake setup besides the single suicide master cylinder in the satellite? I had 1 let go on my 66 coronet, no brakes,no fun!
hopefully you made out ok finding that coronet shifter,if not, please try my buddys #. that hemi is a sleeper, all the way down to the duct tape holding that left rear quarter together, lol, just like my 66 coronets was too! but mine was on both!

When I was 18, I got a job at a shop that catered to Pontiac o files.
389s, 421s, and 455s were the subject of the day.
The owner was my mentor, he taught me that the smallest details could make or break the car....
But not only the car, but me myself.
It was very much like Nick's.
At 58 I was retiring from my NYC city job in the Housing Dept. After 30 years as a leader of my men and expert on fixing 100+ year old buildings so that regular people had a place to live.
So I taught my replacement what was important....
    The little details.
I intended to take up the OLD SCHOOL manner of mechanics for our beloved cars, to keep them running,
To keep them from becoming a museum piece.
But I had a stroke, paralyzed up my entire right side.
I lost the use of my right hand, leg, and even being able to speak.
I can't not even hold a tool anymore.
    It was crushing.
2 years it took me to fight my way back.
But muscle cars were out of the picture.
A young man, 23 years old had a 73 Pontiac Trans Am.
It was very beat up, but it had a 455 that would run with the right care, but he did not know of the way of the muscle car.
    I do
I talked him into doing it "right" no Bondo were new metal panels could be welded in.
The motor HAD to come apart...
Every thing had to bare his touch, so it will be "HIS" car.
    Not many of us left.
Nick knows the way of the muscle car.
He is proud to pass on what he does.
I am proud to pass on what I know.
Everyone turn twords Nick's shop and bow there heads in reference.
The way of the muscle car will never die.

Tom Miano. Tom, you are a great person, helping others and enjoying the American Muscle cars. And yes, its in the small details that counts very much. Thanks for watching.

Thanks Nick, the fact that you read this stuff tells me you care about your subscribers
we got the 455 block back and i stood there showing the boy
how to grind the clearance on the rings.
it took all day with the ring sizer and match the pistons to each bore.
The kid said that the rings out of the box SHOULD fit,.......
NO they MIGHT look like they fit.....i kind of giggled
put the ring in the bore square, measure the clearance...
      sure enough they butted.
      It took all day
but it made the kid proud to know it was done 'RIGHT'.
i may not be able to turn the wrenches myself, but i COULD teach the kid about sizing rings on a cold or hot engine .
For me the feeling of uselessness was kind of hard, after the stroke, just looking at my tools made me sad.
People have told my that i am kind to take the kid under my wing, let him use those tools and my garage.
Those tools belonged to my father and grandfather before me.
seeing them used again made me feel not as useless
The truth is that the kid is doing me a favor, seeing the tools and seeing that Pontiac and block in my garage being worked on.
Well,...it makes me as im carrying on as i should.
The way of the muscle cars, isnt just cars.
We can make it work forever.
Just watch you helping that guy putting in that windshield made me remember
      my mentor...
      "is the details".
The way of the muscle cars will live forever.
      Thank you for doing this.
      Tommy

I have a question about the old Mopar engines, I've been told many times that they'll only go about 50,000 miles before they'd start smoking, due to improper balancing from the factory, is that true? If not, why did they have such short longevity?

NICK , there's an SU carb rebuilder, in Canada IIRC. Think his name is Rhys, or something along that line. He can rebuild those strombergs too. I sold him several sets ( 5 or 6) of strombergs I had laying around here a few years back. Good luck with the Volvo 160 build.... it's "the forgotten Volvo" in all the series they made.

placing the windshield goes way easier if, prior to placing, you put a thin wire between the rubbers where the windshield should be. grease the rubber as well.
When placing the windshield gently pull the rope out between the rubber and the windshield (press it down slightly) and the rubber will be pulled over the windshield.

I do my own screens and i've been doing them since 1970. I put the rubber on the screen then use a cord around the groove, one guy pushes on the screen and I pull the cord. Bingo ,it's in place.Don't forget to replace the rubber diaphragms in the volvos carbs.

Thank you very much for your answer :) The blue tone didn't look like it was the "final" colour, but I'm looking forward to see the finished car! I have one of such rare cars myself (although, a very different kind of car and probably about 25 years younger...still, only 1400 were made and aparently there are only ~ 250 left), so i absolutely love it that such beauties are preserved! I just recently found your channel and while i'm not a huge US-Car guy, you videos are absolutely amazing, very informative and well made - i really enjoy watching them. I hope you and your team won't get too swamped in work, so you can keep making those videos! Have a nice day and greetings from snowy germany!

Once you've got the 164 running, I'd sell the customer a headgasket job on this thing for preventative reasons.
While the head is off replace the freeze plugs you can get to as well.
Nothing disappoints more than a car - that is much loved, starts being used again after many years of not running, then the headgasket blows and cooks the motor.

Personally i dont think any Satellite, Coronet or Belvedere would ever be concidered a "sleeper" those things accept 440's naturally at the very least. Now a 64-66 Barracuda would fit the word as those came at best with the 273 and nothing more, maybe im over thinking the concept but that is just what i think.

    • @nickpanaritis4122
      @nickpanaritis4122 6 ปีที่แล้ว

If there ever was a justifiable up grade it would be a dual master cylinder, and disc brakes. The owner could just shelf the old parts if he wanted to make it original aging later. No way I would want to drive it that way,it is worth to much to chance having the brakes fail.

no thanks, TV has become a vast wasteland with the bloody reality TV formula which says you must provide constant drama to keep the drooling idiots tuned in. Back in 1988 my brother had 2 Mopar project cars that were started by countless other shops and never finished. I got involved and soon learned why people did not buy these cars. Very hard to get parts and few real factory High Performance cars ever made. Nick seems to have more now then I saw at the Pennsylvania Chrysler Nationals in 1988 when we were looking for NOS Parts to finish the Projects. Nick shows all original Chrysler's and he openings the hood...you see bent brake lines for fuel lines, a PepBoys Distributor etc. I dealt with the Chrysler Shops for 5 years... they were the worst.

Love it .....my father put a 426 Hemi in his fiberglass boat he built back in the late seventies. The hulls color was Hemi orange. Boats name " Orange Peel". When he took it for its first cruise he told me it scared him. I asked him why. He told me the 426 Hemi had too much power. LoL.

The diaphragms on the Volvo's Strombergs will most likely need replacing. They should be classed as a service item. A lot of British classic cars had Strombergs. My 1972 Triumph Dolomite left the factory with Srombergs but it currently has SU carburettors. I can't wait to see further progress with the Volvo. You have left nothing to chance with it.

Like the drilling holes in pistons, had a dohc 1.9 Saturn motor that was common to burn oil and the fix was pull pistons and drill relief holes in oil ring, was a great running motor and 35 mpg on highway just used oil! Made me think of that, thanks nick!

To Nick's garage as many videos you produced so far it sure looks like you definitely need alot bigger shop it looks like you could use another 150 feet added to your building another 75 feet the other way. It looks like it tight in your shop with everything that you have in there.

I had never thought about it...but how much power gain and life extension would you guess drilling wrist pins gives an engine like that?

    • @nickpanaritis4122
      @nickpanaritis4122 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Delicious D. I did what the factory did in those days. I am sure it works and lasts longer.

    • @DeliciousDeBlair
      @DeliciousDeBlair 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I knew that Indy cars have high pressure oil injection although it is a well known 'secret' that they did this mainly to add fuel capacity, so it was never realistically seen as a life extender, just promoted as that.
A tiny oil jet injector would, of course, be way beyond merely drilling, or even line channeling pistons, and likely not worth it [cost invested in complex systems added, opposed to extended life of the parts being protected (I had been considering doing all that when I was younger) ] but I will from now on be drilling my pins due to watching this video and thank you for pointing it out to everybunny! (^_^)/

Volvo 164 - The fuel pump is mounted upside down so the suck and feed will be reversed. There should be a phenolic plastic spacer for heat insulation between the pump and the block and a gasket either side. This is essential to get the pump actuating arm to work through its correct angle. The spacer and gaskets are the same as the ones on the B18/20. I think the pump is the same too.
If you need the spacers and gaskets talk to Rhys Kent at Island Automation in BC. He can also rebuild your carbs if needed or at least supply new diaphragms.
