      IMO, Hannibal Rising is just not a good movie, though it has nothing to do with the actor's performance (although replacing Anthony Hopkins is impossible). The film as a whole is just not as good as the other 3 they already watched.

    The flute player was named Benjamin Raspail and it was his head in the jar that Starling found in the garage in the movie version of Silence of the Lambs. He was a patient of Lector and was pretty messed up himself in the book. In the movie it is his head and Lector put it there after Jame Gumb/Buffalo Bill killed him. In the novel, it was the head of Klaus, a lover of Raspail's who was killed by Bill, and it was Raspail who put the head in his storage garage.
    Buffalo Bill was a lover of Raspail but Raspail dumped him (Raspail said Bill wasn't really gay but "picked it up" during his time in prison), so Bill killed Klaus out of jealousy, made an apron out of him, and put his head in Raspail's fridge (which Raspail then stored in his garage...). Raspail calmly told all this to Lector right before Lector killed him. Raspail already knew Bill was a killer when he was with him and didn't really do anything about it but tell Lector in therapy sessions. Raspail was the reason Lector knew about Bill's history and what his real name was (he also had a single therapy session with Bill after Raspail recommended him).

    Francis Dolarhyde's house used to be his grandma's and she was abusive. The conversation you hear when he's first introduced is him remembering when she threatened to castrate him for wetting the bed when he was a kid. As an adult he became obsessed with the Red Dragon painting to the point he developed a split personality based on the dragon and believed he could become it by killing people but he's so insane he doesn't even think he's killing them. @@kimcottingham8043 The show is pretty slow, and in my opinion it is overly theatrical in the outrageousness of the kills and how one man is supposed to pull them all off in such elaboration with so little time and without getting caught. The actors are great however, and I especially liked Richard Armitage as Dollarhyde/the dragon and the guy who played Mason Verger was excellent too. I also very much appreciated how they sort of mixed the storylines of both 'Red Dragon' and 'Hannibal' together, sort of like with tales that change in the retelling over time, but keep the core elements the same.

    I believe you can probably still dial phone numbers this way. Used to be how rotary dial phones worked. You pick up the phone and make a connection, hearing the dial tone to confirm the connection has been made. Put your finger in the dial in the hole for number seven, for example, dial it to the finger stop and remove your finger, the dial mechanism proceeds to break the connection seven times. Whichever number you dial, it breaks the connection that many times. That’s how it indicates to the system on the other end which number you’d like to reach. And so, breaking the connection yourself with the switch on top that breaks the connection when you hang the receiver up accomplishes the exact same thing. Tap it five times for a five, nine times for a nine, etc.

    Structurally, Red Dragon is much more faithful, with story beats happening in the same place, though with Hannibal showing up far more than his book conterpart to influence the plot. Manhunter puts all of the Tooth Fairy scenes in the third act, using the time to focus on Will instead. The Tooth Fairy is creepy, very creepy in fact, but isn't any more than that. Because all of his scenes feel so rushed, there's no reason to care why he makes an emotional connection with Reba thus reducing her character to someone for Will to save.
    On the other hand, all of that Manhunter Will time gives us what Red Dragon doesn't: a compelling and book accurate lead chatacter. I like Edward Norton, but he's not given anything to work with here. The Manhunter Will, like book Will, is frightened by his abilty to empathize with the people he's trying to catch. You understand the emotional toll his job is taking on him and how fragile his state of mind is.
    Personally, I think Manhunter is a better film. Red Dragon is good, it doesn't feel like the desperate cash grab it could have. With the exception of Edwatd Norton, I really like the rest of the cast. But all in all, it never rises above the level of "filmed version of book" trying to emulate the visual language of another movie.
    Manhunter does it's own thing; it adapts the book to the film medium, arguably with varying degrees of success, but managing to still get the spirit right.
    One further note: which version any given person prefers could boil down to simple esthetics. Manhunter is directed by Miami Vice era Michael Mann and, oh boy, it feels like it. It might be the most 80s thing to ever 80s. If synthesizers, barren white sets, and intense neon light creeping in from unknown sources aren't you're cup of tea, this is going to be a very rough sit.

    • @norwegianblue2017
      @norwegianblue2017 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree that Manhunter is the superior movie. Michael Mann was really at the top of his game in the 80s with movies like Manhunter and Thief.

    • @jamesoblivion
      @jamesoblivion 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love Mann, but I've never thought he was right for a Harris adaptation, and Manhunter suffers for it. At the end of Red Dragon, Graham is quickly taken out of commission and Dolarhyde is taken down by his family...first his stepson, with the fishing rod, who saves his life, then his wife, who slays the Dragon. Dolarhyde murdered families because of his lust for the wives and mothers, and he's taken down by a family, removed from the world by a wife and mother. Mann is a tough guy director who makes tough guy movies, so instead, we get a Miami Vice style showdown. Harris's ending is poetic...Mann's is a desperate, if stylish, cliche. The later adaptation splits the difference a bit, and lets Graham hang around to play hero, but ultimately comes down mostly on the side of the novel. Ted Tally scripting was a major plus. For my money, he adapts Harris far better than anyone else. Including Harris himself.

    Dolarhyde eats the painting because he is trying to stop the Dragon. All his killings are to help him "become" the Dragon, which he thinks is what allows him to be functional in society. After he meets and falls in love with Reba, his Dragon personality wants him to kill her; Dolarhyde thinks he can save her by destroying the Dragon, which he thinks he can do by destroying the painting.
    I kind of like that Hannibal is right about Graham being like himself. Just as Hannibal tries to sic Dolarhyde on Graham using the personal ad in the paper, Graham uses Dolarhyde to attack Freddy Lounds by talking smack about Dolarhyde in the interview, and making it seem like he and Freddy are close. I'm not sure if Graham is doing it intentionally or he is doing it subconsciously, but he knows that if Dolarhyde thinks that they are close, he will want to hurt Freddy as a way to hurt Graham

    • @georgeclinton4524
      @georgeclinton4524 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I remember in the book it's Will's idea to use Freddy as bait and Freddy is in on it and working with Feds who set up a surveillance team for when the killer takes 'the bait', but Francis actually manages to kidnap Freddy out from under the FBI surveillance without being caught. Freddy is portrayed as such a slimebag he's willing to knowingly print lies just for the popularity of appearing to have a 'scoop'. Will is extremely conflicted because a part of him is happy Freddy is dead, and Will wonders if maybe he wanted this when he thought up the idea. He's worried that he may have purposefully sacrificed Freddy just to get a couple more clues to work with out of frustration after hitting dead ends and it's just a few days until Francis is going to kill another family.

    Not certain on it, but that famous Hannibal, uh, mouth-noise after the "fava beans and Chianti" line is sorta similar to something horses do, called the "Flehmen response" (or you'd say a horse is "flehming" or "Flehmening" when it acts in that manner). Even if you don't know it, you've probably seen horses do it without knowing what it was; they extend their necks, raise their heads, and inhale with the upper lip rolled-back, looking something like a dog trying to catch a scent. That is actually what the horses are attempting, more or less, as the purpose of the behaviour seems to be improving the chance of scent molecules to reach the vomeronasal organ (VNO), a structure many animals have some variety of (there's debate over whether adult humans do). It's sorta a complementary system to the "main" sense of smell, having more to do with pheromones and regulation of reproduction. Stallions, for instance, are more likely to "Flehmen" if they see a mare urinating, presumably to detect pheromones in her urine that will indicate her current reproductive disposition.
    Video of a horse Flehmening here - th-cam.com/video/E4xEVPyp2j4/w-d-xo.html
    After events like this, it's hard to blame Mary-Louise Parker for turning to weed ("Weeds" was a fun show. Declined a bit in later seasons, but still fun). She's one of those actors I never remember is in anything, but I'm always happy to see.
    7:02 I think this might be an example of Hollywood's "magic silencers". Silencers, or, more accurately, suppressors, do reduce the sound of gunshots somewhat, especially as the explosive charge behind the ammo decreases, but they do not make them remotely "silent". The purpose of the device is mostly to diffuse the sound of the shot, making it more difficult to locate the origin by tracing the direction of the noise. As such, when a suppressor is used, people would likely know a shot was fired. They would just have trouble pinpointing where it was fired from, which is advantageous when you're dealing with a target or, uh, "audience" that might be inclined to shoot back.
    22:14 Can't say for certain, but feeling up Tigger there might be somewhat excusable on the grounds that she has been blind since 2, so, like, when else is she going to get the chance to "see" a tiger's junk? More to it than that, though, I'm sure.
    32:02 A little strange that jacked Ralph Fiennes couldn't get through the louvered door, but Mary-Louise Parker managed it pretty easily. Minor point, but still.
    32:50 Hopefully no-one will ever need to know it, but I think the current agreed-upon technique is that you shoot center mass until they stop moving, and then, if desired, between the eyes to ensure they never do again. Would've helped that kid in "No Time to Die".

    Red Dragon the book is the best. I read it before any of the movies came out. It was recommended by a co - worker and I recommended it to quite a few people. I was excited when Silence of the Lambs was published and couldn't wait to read it. Then I saw the movie after and felt it was ok. I read the next book and the movie and didn't like either so I gave up on the franchise. The Red Dragon book is always in my top 10.

    For some reason they cut out all the parts where 'The Red Dragon' is speaking. Like the scene where he's looking at the blind girl from the attic they actually voiced 'The Dragon' and it was a conversation between Francis and 'The Dragon'. It just plays out awkwardly without hearing 'The Dragon's' voice. You can still see it in the deleted scenes and in my opinion it plays out much better when you actually hear what 'The Dragon' is saying. 'The Dragon's' dialogues with Francis plays a large part in the book and it's almost like a crucial character is missing from the film. Like why make 'Red Dragon' and then cut out 'The Dragon'? lol
