    Excellent camera comparison! Damn, Pixel is still a superb camera phone. Software. Software. Software. The sky looks like the sky.

      I hope that Huawei wont change their software to match Google and Iphone, which are forcing you to take photos in one style only. I like freedom of choice. But I also understand many people does not know or care how they want their photos to look and simply like Pixel or Iphone crowd pleasing "Dolly sheep" style. As some people like crowd pleasing menu of McDonalds and some simply like to make their own meal. :)

      TechLineHD yes it is. Photos are maybe the best you can get, but video recording is not best there is... it's pretty good though.

      Agreed! They need to fix the sftware and it has the potential to be one of the best cameras

      Matthew Moniz A lot of software its already there but people are lazy to hit that zoom button or try different modes like "night mode" A.K.A. Huawei's version of Pixel HDR+ mode or forced HDR. Or find right correct focus distance for front camera. :)

      MRUBHIGH True more work than just hitting shutter button, you have to push more buttons. :) But still much less work than trying teach people to understand basics of photography. Reward for pushing more buttons is freedom. Something you do not have on Pixel and Iphone. When you are limited to one style only. I understand that many people may prefer to be limited and rely on SW to take same style photo every time and it may be what they want. Personally I value more creativity. Because you can take a photo of exactly same place in many different ways. Such a photos have soul, something special that Pixel and Iphone with their crowd pleasing forced full-auto alghorytms never be able to achieve. 100 people will take exactly 100 same photos of that same place, one just like another. Photos without personality. Like from some factory. Quite sad from artistic point of view. Dont you think? :)

      MRUBHIGH Really? One or two two swipes is "a lot of work"?
      I think that P20 Pro is better!

    I'm a bit confused with this video. Whilst I agree with everything he's saying and agree with the results he's showing, I have no idea what modes he is using for the P20 Pro. He shows one pic where he talks about the 40 MP sensor, but it's become pretty common knowledge now that shooting in 40 MP is not where the P20 Pro camera shines. It's the 10mp auto mode where most of the photos come out great. Same with the low light shots. Those are obviously a bit better than the Pixel 2 XL, but is he using the actual 'Night Mode' on the P20 Pro when he's shooting these? Could definitely do a better job in advising the viewer of these details as that could dramatically alter the output of the P20 Pro from what other reviewers have been saying in their camera videos. I also can't believe he's done a camera review and not shown results with the 3x optical zoom and 5 x hybrid zoom. Could do better I think...

    • @hafizmuhammadusman3695
      @hafizmuhammadusman3695 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      well said...i think P20 pro is impressive when taking photos at 10MP by using so called light fusion....and it shines in low light and zooming capabilities are amazing!.Review it again Moniz LOL

    • @MatthewMoniz
      @MatthewMoniz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Why would I show the zoom if the pixel can't do it ? Nothing to compare. As for the photos they're all taken on auto except for the one where I zoom in and show more detail using the 40 mp sensor.

    • @markbarton3233
      @markbarton3233 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Matthew Moniz defensive. Constructive criticism? And maybe add that to comments then so it’s clearer? Or are we meant to just know or something. Also, it’s a camera comparison vid isn’t it so why not talk about the differences such as the zoom function? Sheesh.

    The P20 Pro is hands down the best low light camera phone.
    Try to force HDR on the P20 Pro and do the comparison again to give it a chance.
    The Pixel is still very impressive in every single aspect.

    • @Quoutub
      @Quoutub 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The P20 Pro is much slower in low light (due to the multi frame image processing/"long exposure") and also shows very ugly ghosting. Furthermore the Pixel 2 has a mode called HDR+ enhanced. So when you don't make a Auto comparison, but with Night Mode, then you also need to choose Google's HDR+ enhanced mode.

    • @mole1596
      @mole1596 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Quoutub What the P20 Pro lacks can easily be added in post.

      Kevin Walker Because they follow the stupid Dxomark hype like every year and the phone was announced just 1 week ago. It's necessary that a reviewer has its own opinion. Furthermore there are other comparisons that don't show that the Pixel 2 has a worse camera.

      i think it comes out as superior in low light shots where the bigger sensor is better. also manual mode im sure is better on huawei cuz of the large sensor.

  • @painful1978
    @painful1978 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Dude.. HDR kicks automatically on the pixel.. While it must be chosen on the p20 pro!
    So, it wasn't really a comparison.. If u can set both of them off and then compare.. Or both on.
    Jumping from 40 to 10 mp on one camera while the other doesn't have the option!
    U kept saying that images on the pro looks more pleasant!
    Pixel and i phone r the best on giving u the true tone images.. But I'll never post any of them without editing on Snapseed or lightroom.

  • @sidersproductions941
    @sidersproductions941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +79

    I generally enjoy your reviews and comparisons but either you have a busted unit or something has seriously gone wrong here. Don't get me wrong. Not that the P20 deserves the 109 DxOMark rating and that it's the runaway best camera on a smartphone, however I have not seen the type of results you have here showing up any where else. Not SuperSaf or TechMagnet or anyone else. To be fair the P20 probably in reality should've scored closer to 108 for photos and an 89 at best for video. Funny how DxOMark doesn't even mention the lack of EIS or AIS for 4k video all while calling it's stabilization a touch better than the Pixel 2. I think we can start ignoring their rating system at least to some degree at this point. But back to your video, some weird results going on there.

    • @timzy4395
      @timzy4395 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I've seen multiple comparisons and the P20 Pro stays consistent with what I am seeing here. Too much oversharpens in 10mp mode and is too dark in 40mp

    • @sidersproductions941
      @sidersproductions941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Timi Akinlonu ok I guess I should be more specific. That terrible purple fringing. The over sharpening makes sense for IG and social media where everything is reduced. But the 40mp shots have much better dynamic range.

    • @sidersproductions941
      @sidersproductions941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Timi Akinlonu and now I have seen it duplicated. I'm all about fairness and it seems other reviewers just took the type of photos where the purple fringing issue didn't show up. My conclusion is that the S9+ should still be the top camera. th-cam.com/video/tXcmfR-0huw/w-d-xo.html

    What all you guys are failing to understand is who pays who to do reviews. I’ve watched over ten videos today who showed the same results but with the opposite results. Either the shooter doesn’t know how to take a photo or someone is being paid . The only fact we do know is the hardware on the P20 Pro is 10 times as powerful and most videos I’ve seen with pro photographers the P20 killed the pixel. So take this video with a grain of salt

  • @kingjaykay2174

    Well I dont know but it seems like no matter what Samsung and iPhone and now adding insult to injury Google will be always on the top and the worst thing is they are interconnected to each other in one way or other as well
    Like seriously DXO mark would be insane before releasing their scores if you know and I know then they know that we know that they screwed
    And guys these reviews are personal view of the vlogger
    They are literally not trained professionals yes they are professional vloggers but not trained tech guys, we the spectators and viewers make them doing this
    Now thing is DXO mark guys are pros and I still can't digest that they will give up on just making a slight more money through short cuts like being paid by OEM To mark them bit higher
    In longer run it's always bad for business and for every thing
    Now thing is gsmarena.com is doing their magic and I am their reader since I don't remember and individually camera is way way way promising but I know when it will come to camera comparison shoot out if it's not Sammy or iPhone or Google then it has to suck
    I have iPhone 7 plus and Mate 9 and I use Mate 9 as my camera device apart for slow motion videos because that's where iPhone shines
    Now thing is let's talk about options
    Google software is magical and always on HDR+ is simply awesome
    Awesome Front facing camera
    Video stabilization is again superb
    But monochrome
    3x optical zoom
    hand held night shots
    40 mp raw pics
    10 MP super samples
    Very detailed 24 mp front facing camera with softening compromise
    Plenty of modes
    That's super super steady 1080p vid
    Like there are infinite options that you get from p20 pro
    You have to choose for your self I will rather go with P20P any time but that's my opinion and I am not a tech nerd but I know one thing that when it comes to dynamic range Huawei always did it with shinning colours and that over exposure issues well haven't seen them yet in other reviews and I don't understand it's 2D pic how on earth a dark shadow based pic where highlights are just dark over exposes the pic lolzzzz like seriously either Huawei prepared a special edition mobile software for this guy or may be special edition Mobile softwares to every other reviewers on planet
    Else I am sick and tired of this bull shit that ppl say about Chinese goods
    Well I have been there I know them I traded with them and those people are simply genius you pay them high enough and they will make you any thing of any quality you want
    And what's wrong with Chinese goods nothing and now ppl will say that scum bag spying crap so Google and every other huge crocodile does it too but in better way
    Peace from UAE

    I think the major advantage of the Pixel 2 is hdr+. The P20 Pro doesn't shoot in hdr automatically, it's a shooting mode. So, yeah, I would say it's normal that the Pixel 2 is better.

    • @aeskellion
      @aeskellion 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the p20 and p20 pro are more oriented towards professional photography than point-and-shoot. Messing with the ISO, exposure, shutter speed, you will get the best shot, because of the camera hardware.

      Lukas Dvorok no, it is simply because the p20 processes pictures in a bad way. Sharpening has nothing to do with zoom. It is an effect that is applied to the picture after the initial captureby software.

      Huawei's night mode is extremely slow (due to the multi frame noise reduction which they call a "long exposure") and leads to ghosting. And when you don't choose Auto mode, but Night mode, then you can also use Google's HDR+ enhanced mode instead of Auto mode.

    That "purple hue" is not a software issue. It's called fringing or chromatic aberration and happens in high contrast situations with some lenses. Most lens manufacturers put special coatings on their lenses to reduce this.

    • @mobiltelefonru
      @mobiltelefonru 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Then how come that DR on your pics is so low? Why sky on your pics on P20 Pro is vanished? Also chromatic aberration on trees is happens only with 40mpx mode, but you have it almost on every pic. I have nothing common with your results. On my pics DR on P20 Pro is higher then on Pixel 2 XL - almost on every picture. Something wrong with your comparison.

    • @MatthewMoniz
      @MatthewMoniz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      DR with the P20 Pro in most pics is actually higher than the pixel 2 XL. The problem with the P20 is its inconsistent due to software. If you look at the pic with the belsize bar you can see how AI snapped the shot perfectly with a very blue sky making the pixel 2xl look a little more dull. I think the camera has the potential to be the best I just think Huawei needs to tune the software processing to be more consistent.

    What mode did you use? 10mp auto mode?? Or the 40mp pro mode? Did you use the AI or not? This all is not really mentioned so the comparison is not that fair to be honest. There are so many comparisons where the P20 Pro shines over the pixel 2 xl. So that’s a bit strange that everybody gets different results... I mean dxo Mark rated the P20 Pro with 114 points as the best still camera ever! Why this result when the pixel 2 xl seems to do the better job in this video? I really don’t get it...

      The Pixel 2 XL has better software, yes. But that software is limited by the product's hardware. Software you can be updated through patches; hardware can't.
      The Huawei P20 has a vastly superior hardware than the Pixel 2 XL. So as Huawei releases more software updates, (or if one were to download many of the other software camera apps available on the market), the Huawei P20 will be the superior camera.

    On the second shot, that purple stuff on the tree must be purple fringing... Though the weird thing about it is that, as far as I can tell from all the samples on the internet, that artefact only shows up in 40MP mode, whereas shooting in 10MP the software manages to suppress it every single time. Take a look at those photos from GSMArena, for example, none of those exhibits such a problem. They have been shot in full auto.
    www.gsmarena.com/huawei_p20_pro_paris_photo_shoot-review-1744p2.php#image4

    www.gsmarena.com/huawei_p20_pro_paris_photo_shoot-review-1744p2.php#image24
    On the other hand, full-res photo show some noticeable fringing on borderlines of highlights and shadows. Some of thin frames supporting the sealing are turning purple when it should be dark grey/green.
    www.gsmarena.com/huawei_p20_pro_paris_photo_shoot-review-1744p2.php#image0
    Also... no zoom comparison? Like seriously, what the actual . . . . were you even thinking? 3x optical zoom and 5x lossless zoom are one of the biggest factors which distinguish P20 Pro from cameras on other flagship smartphones. I have no idea why on earth you decided to omit this (probably the most important) part.
    And finally, I really hoped you included the some samples from P20 Pro with AI recognition OFF so that we could compare how it affects the overall picture quality and decide whether it should be enabled or disabled. Overall I felt that this comparison was really incomplete... I expected a lot better than this.

    Great comparison. It's nice to see a reviewer not going crazy for the latest gear and actually telling it like it is. I have big doubts that Huawei will do anything significant to improve the camera processing. Whereas I have faith that Google will constantly work on improving their camera algorithms.
    That a single lens, 5-6 month old camera still reigns supreme, says a lot about what Google accomplished last year. Computational photography, not more and more lenses, are what will matter more going forward. Huawei has a mix of both but their AI tricks don't match Google's software savvy.

  • @stephenlapper9958
    @stephenlapper9958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Having owned both phones, I think my opinion is well placed.
    The camera on the P20 Pro, when used correctly, is miles ahead of the Pixel 2 XL. The photos are crisp and full of detail and contain less noise than any other phone camera I've used.
    I found the Pixel 2 XL's camera quite a disappointing improvement from the first Pixel device.
    Matthew, I'd recommend using the Pro Mode on the P20 Pro and really try and get the most out of the camera, rather than just point and shoot.
    The Night Shot mode is on another level to any other smartphone camera. 👍

    I had the Huawei p20 pro on my hands now and trust me, the camera problems showed here are spot on. An average user will encounter even more problems and no - I am not just too lazy/stupid to use pro mode. I could fix some problems with settings but the major problem, unintended blurry zones, wrong colors and Aquarell like merged surface post processing remains. And tbh I don't see why a high class product should require to switch off its KI just to make an acceptable snapshot. The RAW Fotos should be an exception as well and not the only way out to avoid flawed KI decisions.

    The Pixel 2 XL is just a beast. Every Android OEM needs to team up with Google and use this software tech. A Pixel with a single 40 MP lens with f 1.6...would be ridiculous. This software is amazing.

    This matches what I've seen from both phones. The p20 smokes the pixel in night shots, but those shots are lacking in detail when zoomed and appear very over-processed, especially people. Everyone comes out looking brush painted. In day-light shots, the pixel exposes better and retains far more detail. Which is absurd considering the hardware the p20 is packing. Day shots on p20 sometimes appear ridiculous.

It's normal with sensors that have high pixel density and is easy to fix. PS. it looks like you shoot in auto and default, which means all your shots are 10MP res.
