Nice review. Thumbs up. But I would like to see you also include video comparison as a category of your tests aswell. Probably could fit it in just before the 'extra feature' category.
This is how MKBHD really should've done in camera section of his review on P20 Pro! Simply showing one scene and saying "Yep Pixel is better" doesn't convince anyone.
I agree. I love my P20 Pro, the camera really is on a different level. MKBHD was really passive when reviewing the camera, it's almost as if he'd made his mind up beforehand, but if it had an Apple, Google or a Samsung logo on it he would have loved it. He didn't really give it the justification and appreciation it deserves.
It's worth mentioning, but honestly it's not that mind-blowing as auto mode already does excellent job with dynamic range... It's great for taking photos in pitch-black conditions, though.
As I checked in many scenes, It looks VERY GOOD in "preview" or smartphone screen size, however on monitor and with zoom is fucking bad. What Huawei does, you can do the same in a 1/2s PP. Just open Camera raw and boost SHARPNESS AND NOISE REDUCTION. IT will give you that "paint" effect with sharp edges. Again, looks good in small size but zooming in it shows the "trick"!
Kristoffer Katindig p20 pro takes great pictures, but for video quality it sucks. Also the selfie camera on both version of p20 sucks for video recording and selfie shooting. So, comparing both version of p20 to pixel and s9 video recording from back and front facing camera shows how weak the camera is for video and selfie on both version of p20 camera. MKBHD or anyone out there shouldn't recommend a phone just because it takes good picture in day light. What about video recording in 60 fps...
Bandy Ahmed i just wish Marques laid those info upfront as he review the P20 Pro. Nice one you mention those considerations above but Marques didn't thus, I say he's bias. He is reviewing the P20 Pro thus, anything and everything must be laid out before making a conclusion. Oh by the way, did Marques mentioned how the Pixel 2 XL being a flagship phone that is has problematic POLED screen. Take note full touchscreen phone that has a pdoblematic screen... How can that be a better phone than P20 Pro? This will be an endless debate for sure. I stand by what I said, Marques is bias when it comes to any phone/s pitted against Pixel 2 XL.
Bandy Ahmed Actually selfie camera on P20 Pro isn't that bad as long as you get the focusing distance right, and the video quality from 24MP sensor is pretty good with decent low-light performance and great video stabilisation at FHD. It's such a pity that Huawei decided to omit the autofocus system, though... that alone makes the one on S9 much more reliable in real life usage.
Kristoffer Katindig If i say this guy is bias? Would be MKBHD biased but what about other tech tuber? You will hardly found someone like this guy who will put Pixel 2 under the P20 Pro.
System Austen And is anybody else doing a review as comprehensive as PCWorld's? And The Verge and Tom's Guide also stated that P20 Pro's still camera is superior to the one on Pixel 2 especially at night.
finally someone does a real camera review that gives this phone what it deserves .. thank you ! btw I hope you address the night mode on the P20 Pro since its the most talked about feature of the camera
You are an underrated reviewer! Kudos for an amazing detailed review on all the 4 phones! I had my mind set on the pixel 2..I have to rethink now! Thank you! I hated it when MKBHD did a review on the mate 10 pro and the p20...he is too biased towards the pixel 2 and at times hes being naive! Keep doing the reviews! Subscribed to your channel!😍
I am not partially to the one side, but the Huawei P 20 pro did a great job. It's really perfect smart phone for Photography nowadays for me... Finally, can you compare the Huawei P 20 pro vs LG G6 or Galaxy S9+...??? I still waiting although you do it slows. Thanks for sharing your experiences with Smartphone Camera. Well done...
It's not that they don't know how to use it, but rather they can't be even bothered to review it properly because of their bias towards Pixel 2 or sometimes S9. Check out MKBHD's review on P20 Pro and you'll see what I'm talking about :)
Can you tell me did you shoot in 20 mpix on P20 or 12 mpix? Not even one reviewer was talking about shooting in 20mpix with that phone and i was shocked that i can shoot like that when i bought phone. I thought there is only 12 mpix for RGB and 20 mpix for monochrome.
I don't understand where on a different test by you the mate 10 pro beat the Pixel 2 XL but got beat up in this one why? Same style test so I truly don't understand.
Nice review overall, I agree that p20 pro has the best camera compared to all others and it is clearly a winner here, however according to me pixel 2 xl should be 2nd winner coz of its picture quality, best dynamic range, exposure and natural color reproduction, jus beats all other remaining phones. Yes, in low light p20 has advantage over pixel other than that pixel 2 xl is damn good camera.
If one were to chose between Mate 10 Pro or P20 (not pro!), could anybody on here recommend one over the other (based on camera, battery, display, etc)? Pls share. Thanks!
Phone cameras starting to get so close that one reviewer will prefer the P20 and other will prefer the Pixel. It just depends on the situations and testing environment. It's more important to explain the difference. A auto shooter will mostly prefer the results from the Pixel, it's processing and AI will appeal to most. As soon as you want to play around and maybe learn a bit about photography, you'll be more happy with the P20/P20 Pro. Either way...you are not getting a bad camera. I mean comparing two tiny sensor cameras is not like comparing a 1" sensor vs APSC, the hw is almost the same.
Why do all these camera comparisons not favor the p20 pro, i was gonna get the mate 10 pro, but now im going for the p20 pro and now i see it has problems?
Im hapoy with this comparison... Bcz this is true.... I can share you one thing When my friend having note8 and im having mate 10 pro i took same photo in 2 devices and look through those phones i though note 8 is superb.. But i think differently... Send mate 10 pro photo to note 8 and same photo moved to a new file... And i look that mate 10 pro nailed it mahn..... Note 8 best in display and mate 10 pro in camera... What a great move from huawei leica lense... Sprbly executed
WTF?! You can clearly see, that 8:45 shot made by Pixel 2 XL beats everyone in highlights! And it's somehow lost earlier in the same aspect...I mean, possibly, this is the only shot made with HDR++. Man, should have been switching on HDR+ extended on Pixel 2 XL for entire comparison. Despite zooming in most cases Pixel was better, but you really need to try to switch full power for Pixel 2 camera and do testing again.
After watching this, I can't help but think I wish I never traded in my Pixel 2 XL for the S9+... Can't wait to get the Pixel 3 or 3 XL (haven't decided yet).
@@skeith7403 - The Pixel 2 XL had a better camera, MUCH better battery life and no useless bloatware I never used. Also missed the fast OS updates. I finally sold it, getting the Pixel 3 now :) (using a cheap Moto Z2 Play right now)

For selfie camera enquiries.. it's not good, I've got it, don't care about selfies so not bothered but from what I tested-barely average for a flagship. Certainly can't touch pixel or Samsung. Video is good in my opinion, not great. Hoping for improvement with software update.. it's the stills where the phone shines.. and not just the auto, it gives you many options, portrait, adjustable level of aperture, 10m or less processed 40 MP pictures, 3 and 5x zoom... You can rely get creative with it
On the P20 pro I'm getting weird faint lines and blotchy green banding/blotches around edges on photos. Especially in a bright photo and indoors as well. Seems to be more noticeable in hdr or after its done its sharpening.
I always love your Review and comparison then others youtuber, but It will be better if the comparison method only between 2 device only, so we could see in more details, coz if you compare 4 device at the same time the picture will be too small, which is less information we see, especially if we watching it using mobile device, please create more video like you did when you compare LG G6 and its other competitor. Thanks
When you get to video, the story changes tho... Hence the Pixel 2 is arguably still the best camera phone overall. You missed a couple of features to compare. The P20 Pro's night mode (the best on any phone), as well as the Pixel 2's portrait mode in low light, which is again the best on any phone.
3 years later i still use Huawei p20pro, and he looks like brand new, even drop more than 5 times on wooden floors, terracotta floors, just tiny visible scratches on the back. My second best camera phone that i prefer in day light photography, that is much better than Huawei p20pro is my Nokia 808 pureview. In some shots its similar quality to my Nikon d3500 🤔🙂👍
You can watch supersavtv and the tech chap channel camera comparison bettwen p20 pro vs galaxy s9+, the p20 pro loses in some rear camera photos, selfies, and especially in video
Komang Adi You should take a look at GSMarena's detailed camera comparison between P20 Pro and S9+ then... P20 Pro simply annihilates S9+ in low-light.
Has anyone received 8.1 update for Mate 10 pro? I am still waiting :( . Nice comparison btw, but I will wait for the software update from Huawei fo mate 10 pro and then will look for a comparison.
Ok test but you are missing one important category: Portraits and selfies in dayligt, low light and with flash. Any smartphone can take descent shot in dayligt, less in low light but where most smartphones fails is in portraits and selfies. Oil pating, smudge, heavy processing and crazy noise reduction. Now show us some portraits and selfies from the Huawei's phones ;)
Edward T Portrait samples from P20 Pro are on GSMArena www.gsmarena.com/huawei_p20_pro_vs_samsung_galaxy_s9_plus-review-1755p4.php Aperture mode looks trash because of aggressive noise reduction, but photos using Portrait Mode look really natural.
Thanks for the link, that confirms the horrible camera performance of P20 Pro...the selfie cam is absolute garbage, the night shots has no detials (look at the trees) Same goes for daylight shot. While noise is kept down in all situations/modes/objects so is the textures and details.
Edward T Man, stop being a blind fanboy. In daylight they are pretty much neck and neck with P20 Pro rendering natural objects in more restrained manner whereas S9+ shows superiour details in buildings. At night there is absolutely NO competition, with P20 Pro resolving higher amount of details, with much better control of highlights, with less noise. S9 is clearly suffering from higher amount of noise especially around the edge of the image, worse dynamic range, yet more smudged details and very prominent corner softness. Wide aperture affects the overall sharpness of the image and that's probably the reason why Huawei moved out from F-stop race, decreasing the aperture from Mate 10's F1.6 to P20 Pro's F1.8 and instead opted for a larger sensor. Let's be honest here, neither of them is perfect and both phones have their advantage and disadvantage. For example S9+ wins easily in 4K stabilisation and selfie camera. But P20 Pro wins in zoom and low-light. In portrait mode they are equally good. Simple as that.
Funny how anyone with different opinion is always called fanboy...To me it sounds like you are one ?;) (btw i dont own a Samsung) Perhaps its just me being an "old school" (pro) photographer that don't understand modern social media "photography" gadget that are made to make pictures look "good" on small smartphone screens ;)
+Edward T skin looks like plastic. It's funny how it "plasticify" the skin leaving the moles for "natural look". With beauty mode of even... A bit weird.
Dude a camera review of p20 pro without the night mode doesn't show its true strength + you have to get far more shots with people in them because that's how what most people use their phone cameras for. And no mention of the Selfie neither. The review gets D+ for me
So by tweaking the AI on and off, you ended up not testing these phones using the settings out of the box, which you promised in the beginning. This is a bad video.
And this guy afraid to capture human photos, because everyone will know Pixel 2 XL has great detailing. But this guy tries to turn off HDR+ mode on pixel 2 XL and captures photos of locations but not people....... Got you boy LOL
I don't see anybody who's comparing cameras from P20 Pro and Pixel 2 apart from this channel and Matthew Moniz (who didn't really test out the camera with AI turned off).

I thought you missed the biggest feature of p20 pro, night mode. In very dark settings, p20 pro blows other flagships oout of water.
Was watching this video 6 months ago and couldn’t believe))) now I understand, it was true!
P20 for the win
I have the P20 and the Picture are very nice im glad to have it :3
So by tweaking the AI on and off, you ended up not testing these phones using the settings out of the box, which you promised in the beginning. This is a bad video.
Can you turn of AI in p20 pro entirely?
no you need to put the HDR plus enhanced on the pixel not Auto so that way the pixel can actually pimp slap that phone the P Pro
Only have single camera, pixel 2 xl still amazing
Yay. P20 Pro. I so Agree
Portraits please :(
we only want to see the rear camera apature effecr when outdoor photoshoots of peoples not flowers and all selfies
P20 Pro does have the best camera hands down. Huawei did a phenomenal job.
And this guy afraid to capture human photos, because everyone will know Pixel 2 XL has great detailing. But this guy tries to turn off HDR+ mode on pixel 2 XL and captures photos of locations but not people....... Got you boy LOL
Vamsy Krishna Ah man get over it already, Pixel to lost the crown, just wake up
Vamsy Krishna Yes, it looks like he only used regular HDR+ judging by the blown out highlights. That's unfortunate.
What about night mode in p20 pro???
Are you mad or what?
Looks like this guys paid. Comparing all huaweis to pixel. Thats not how u compare
Watching this from my huawei p10 plus
This guy never gives crown to Pixel 2 XL. Every time Pixel 2 XL wins with other TH-camrs and in their TH-cam videos. But from this guy..... LOL
I don't see anybody who's comparing cameras from P20 Pro and Pixel 2 apart from this channel and Matthew Moniz (who didn't really test out the camera with AI turned off).
Ok, start going to school again kindly :)
What?
Correct bro
