Poor Glenn Tipton, the guitarist stage left, is soldiering on, even though he had been suffering from Parkinson’s for well over two years. Imagine that! A rock guitarist continuing to play live while experiencing a progressive loss of control of his fingers. So much respect for these guys, and you should also go and find a version of this song from earlier in your career, just so you know.
I prefer this recent live version, with the voice of old Halford, it brings a new dimension! :) They prove that this title is still good today, modern, and more epic than 90% of epic metal lol.
Yeah i remember seeing them around 2008-09 and Halford was pushing his falsettos on every song a bit too hard (Painkiller was a pain to hear, no pun intended), maybe now he's acknowledge that his voice isn't meant to use it like that anymore.

Sabina, Listen to this! Let me be the first to say that the original studio recording of this is a must listen. It contains Rob at his absolute Best! no singer can hit those notes he's does their. It's ear pearsing sharp enough to shatter glass that's the level he reached as a singer. You will not be disappointed I guarantee it.
Desert Plains is my favorite song from Judas Priest. I grew up playing in heavy metal bands in the 80s and 90s we played most every priest song that was written at that time. Another of my favorites is fever, from the screaming for vengeance - album. Another awesome song is Times End, from the band SAINT. They sound much like priest, and they really nail it.
Judas Priest wrote Metal history, at least since their second album "Sad wings of destiny" (their first release "Rocka Rolla" is nice, but.. different). They were innovative at all times, and nearly every album has a different vibe. So be prepared for a hell of a rabbit hole ;-) The list of my alltime faves is too long, but you could check out "Victim of changes" and "The sentinel" for a start.

This performance is much more recent though, as KK Downing isn't the guitarist on the left, and poor old Glenn Tipton (guitarist on the right) had already been diagnosed with Parkinson disease (2018). You can see here that Glenn barely moves, and he was such a dynamic player/performer. I love Judas Priest for their anthemic metal power, but their more thoughtful songs are equally impressive. Desert Plains is clever, poetic and an example of great story telling very similar to Blood Red Skies. Try it; you won't be disappointed.
I absolutely agree. I had the choice of Blood red skies or Desert plains, I chose this performance because the video quality is so good. Desert Plains will be also on my list of songs from judas priest i will recomend in the future
Please go back and explore this band. They were one of the pioneers of heavy metal and deserve, along with few others, to have their catalogue extensively reviewed. Do go back and listen to them in their prime (70s, 80s) as holy crap, even better than what you just listen too. But, for a singer in his 70s now, I think they still sound amazing

My favorite band since I was 13 I’m now 54. The voice of Rob Halford absolutely is and always has been a gift for us to enjoy. Priest as performers have always delivered in a big way. I’ve seen so many concerts but Judas Priest are one of very very few bands that sound better live. Priest rules. Prayers for Glenn Tipton in his fight👍
Judas Priest is amazing! In the metal community, there is a friendly rivalry between Judas Priest and Iron Maiden's fans as to which of them is the best. I won't choose between them myself. My favorite band is Iron Maiden, I love their style more, but I won't say they are better than Priest, just different! :D Also Rob Halford of Judas Priest and Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden are two of the most legendary metal singers of all time! :D
I saw him in 2017 and in 2021, he can still scream. I think now he is using a vocoder during some of the highest parts, but Ozzy has been doing that since the 80's and nobody shames him for it. Rob is one of the greatest vocalists to ever walk the earth. They still put on an incredible show. I'd highly recommend seeing Priest on their next supporting tour because I think it might be their last.

Ritchie is recording with his new band already (instruments are all recorded for their new album Rob is just doing his vocals), and it's the sad truth that Glenn can barely fret a note anymore. I don't see them pushing out another album with Glenn's condition and I think that's why Ritchie got the OK to go and record his own music.
okay, I am 57 years old and have been a priest fan for 45 years, First song ever heard from them was Hell Bent for Leather. Since then have a shit load of favorites. You have to check out their Fuel for Lifetour concert video. It was done when there were in their prime, and yes I saw it f***n awesome.

Now that the release of Unleashed live is out. was a fan since 13yo, 56 now. I am a guitarist, and love the entire Unleashed live album, but I love all of them for different reasons. If you want to know the truth this song is actually from 1988 album called Ram It Down so that would be 35 years old. Another great song that maximizes Halfords vocals is Beyond The Realms Of Death from the album Stained Class in 1978, that is off the hook. Stained Class was that album those 2 young kids were listening to this song in which they killed themselves while listening to and the family tried suing Judas Priest saying that there was subliminal messages in the song, which there was not butthe song is about depression and taking ones own life.
Judas Priest is incredible, and Rob Halford is still really good, even though he is long past his prime. I have always loved his tone when he's not in his falsetto. The Sentinel is probably my favorite song of theirs. In his prime, Halford and Ronnie James Dio, along with Geoff Tate, were probably the best 3 metal vocalists of all time. I'll also give a shout out to his solo band Halford, their album Resurrection is fantastic!

'Blood red skies' is an interesting choice for a Judas Priest song... it was from their 1988 album 'Ram it down'... Rob Halford (vocals) was much younger then (he's 60+ of age in this clip), so his vocals were more piercing in the studio version... Also, they used a drum machine (and keyboards) on the studio track... Apparently, their drummer (at the time) Dave Holland was having health issues and had to be substituted in the studio. That gave 'Blood red skies' this surreal, futuristic sound. Truthfully, Judas Priest is more famous for ripping heavy metal tunes like 'Painkiller'... 'Hellion/ Electric Eye'... 'Freewheel burning'... 'Metal gods'... 'Gates of Valhalla' 🤘🤘🔥🔥But Priest have a diverse side to their catalog of music as well... songs like - 'Beyond the realms of death'... 'Solar angels'... When I was a kid if you followed early metal you were in a sub music genre, now in an age of sampling and Simon Cowell fame people are realising that the bands we love/loved are very talented musicians. Judas Priest is band i grown up and love as much as first time i started listen to them around 1981-1982. They have such a big and good catalogue that it is difficult to pick out a favorite song. But my favorite album is Painkiller. It is their hardest and fastet releases but everything on it is top notch.
1970's Judas Priest was on a planet like no one else. The ancestral lineage to their musical output from 1976-1979 was untraceable. They were a full-fledged 80's metal band touring the world in the 1970's, basically playing 80's metal long before the 1980's ever reared its head. Favorites are always tough to pick, but if there's one "must song" to listen to, it would be "Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver" from their 1976 masterpiece Sad Wings of Destiny.
Another great performance. I was there right down the front at Glenn Tipton's (red trousers) side, in fact you can briefly see me at the "you'll never take me alive" part. The end section is so awesome. Great reaction.
A lot of people don't know what it really takes to put on a show like this I don't do it as much anymore working with bands on tour stagehand stuff but if you could look and see what's behind the scenes to set this up you would be amazed it's a lot of work lot of dedication from the band all the way down to the crew little bit older now I wish I could still do it but I still do every now and then check out more of the early stuff I think you'll dig it
Just so you know, Blood Red Skies came out on the RAM IT DOWN album in the 1980s. Much older song than this recording. Rob Halford was definitely not on his game during this recording. It must have been a very late date in a tour.
This is an interesting place to start with Judas Priest. Most people go straight into the deep end with Painkiller. This performance was actually from 2011, Rob Halford was about 60 at the time, and still hitting those insane highs. The original song is from 1988. The Sentinel from 1984 is a great one, a true show of what makes them so special, with the duelling guitar solos (both guitarists go back and forth with a barrage of fast solos). Victim Of Changes (originally from 1976) is one of the best examples of Rob’s vocal abilities, as is 2014’s Halls Of Valhalla. Those are 2 songs nearly 40 years apart, that should give an idea of how long Rob has been at the top of his game. And the of course there is the aforementioned Painkiller, which I consider the one song that is the epitome of the entire genre of Metal. The guitar riffs and solos, the drums, Rob’s voice, the theme of the lyrics… it is THE song that if someone asked me “which one song encapsulates the genre of Metal?” Painkiller would be my answer.
Painkiller is the noobs scapegoat song. Most people are just tricked by the modern recording quality of 1990. Rob is far past his prime and the song structures are weak. But, "loud noise good!" You can easily tell since the painkiller tour has rob sounding terrible live.

with all due respect to sabbath, priest is the most talented complete heavymetal band in history, to truly appreciate their greatness you had to see them live in their prime i was so fortunate to see them twice 80 and 84, their light show was incredible, the amount of base priest puts out live is astonishing, i had to back away from the stage it was beating me up, checkout diamonds and rust live, the one where rob is wearing that long leather gown or coat amazing performance

And he's still one of the *very best* metal vocalists out there - even though obviously his range isn't like it used to be, to me Rob actually sounds a bit fuller these days. He's always had a phenomenal control over his breathing and diaphragm, and has always done both clean vocals in his full range, and growls and raspy screams too. He has (had) a vocal range from C2 to C#6, and full control over everything in between. If you would see Rob (and Priest) in their prime, I'd suggest a live recording from early 80s - preferably the song 'Victim Of Changes'. There's a few.
His vocal peak is early 80s. By 86 you can see a clear decline each year forward. "Condemned to hell!" in the sentinel is a good barometer. 86, 88, 90, etc... Each tour, that note got lower and weaker. 84 was his real prime. Maybe even 83.
@@adameves5970 disagree. He stopped drinking in 86. I've seen every tour since 81. His voice was pretty ragged during the 84 tour. From 86 on he was crushing it. 91 during Painkiller, I caught two shows and he was as high or higher and stronger than I'd seen him ever previously. Even on his small Halford tour for Made of Metal, he opened with Resurrection and absolutely crushed it. I was not expecting him to hit the notes in the chorus and he did. He's petered off and picks and chooses parts in songs now. Even on a show for the Redeemer of Souls they surprised the hell out of everybody and did Screaming for Vengeance...and nailed it. I still have it on my phone.

You're going to make a statement based on a line delivered in one song. Rob likes to reinterpret and deliver his vocals differently in many songs over the years. I'm stating he was able to deliver a better and stronger voice after 86 when he stopped drinking. He himself, Tom Allom and his band mates all concur with that assessment. If his "peak" was 84(his live performances were quite hit and miss during that time, he has stated as much) yet in 91 during the Painkiller tour they performed many songs that had him at his "limit" and he performed them as well or better than ever, including Painkiller. You commented on my statement he was at his peak between 86-2000. I stand by that because I witnessed it. I also witnessed a Defenders tour that had him gaining weight and struggling and rough sounding vocals that I did not witness after that tour, for a long time. He was no where near his peak in 84.

My favorite band since I was 13 I’m now 54. The voice of Rob Halford absolutely is and always has been a gift for us to enjoy. Priest as performers have always delivered in a big way. I’ve seen so many concerts but Judas Priest are one of very very few bands that sound better live. Priest rules. Prayers for Glenn Tipton in his fight👍
Judas Priest is amazing! In the metal community, there is a friendly rivalry between Judas Priest and Iron Maiden's fans as to which of them is the best. I won't choose between them myself. My favorite band is Iron Maiden, I love their style more, but I won't say they are better than Priest, just different! :D Also Rob Halford of Judas Priest and Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden are two of the most legendary metal singers of all time! :D

I saw him in 2017 and in 2021, he can still scream. I think now he is using a vocoder during some of the highest parts, but Ozzy has been doing that since the 80's and nobody shames him for it. Rob is one of the greatest vocalists to ever walk the earth. They still put on an incredible show. I'd highly recommend seeing Priest on their next supporting tour because I think it might be their last.

Ritchie is recording with his new band already (instruments are all recorded for their new album Rob is just doing his vocals), and it's the sad truth that Glenn can barely fret a note anymore. I don't see them pushing out another album with Glenn's condition and I think that's why Ritchie got the OK to go and record his own music.

okay, I am 57 years old and have been a priest fan for 45 years, First song ever heard from them was Hell Bent for Leather. Since then have a shit load of favorites. You have to check out their Fuel for Lifetour concert video. It was done when there were in their prime, and yes I saw it f***n awesome.

I have been a fan since 1976, seen them since 1980 , my fav album is Stained Class, my point was his peak of his vocal prowess was between 86, fuel for life tour and Painkiller tour, just after his drinking and smoking days were over. Still the best metal singer ever, even now in his 70’s he can still put young singers to shame.

Now that the release of Unleashed live is out. was a fan since 13yo, 56 now. I am a guitarist, and love the entire Unleashed live album, but I love all of them for different reasons. Halford has always seem to be the hot headed one that always says what we all are thinking but not saying. collect them all, leave none behind. btw, I recently watched your reaction to Korn-Daddy. I am very impressed by the reaction and I am very humbled by the choice you made in your incarnation.
If you want to know the truth this song is actually from 1988 album called Ram It Down so that would be 35 years old. Another great song that maximizes Halfords vocals is Beyond The Realms Of Death from the album Stained Class in 1978, that is off the hook. Stained Class was that album those 2 young kids were listening to this song in which they killed themselves while listening to and the family tried suing Judas Priest saying that there was subliminal messages in the song, which there was not butthe song is about depression and taking ones own life.
Judas Priest is incredible, and Rob Halford is still really good, even though he is long past his prime. I have always loved his tone when he's not in his falsetto. The Sentinel is probably my favorite song of theirs. In his prime, Halford and Ronnie James Dio, along with Geoff Tate, were probably the best 3 metal vocalists of all time. I'll also give a shout out to his solo band Halford, their album Resurrection is fantastic!

'Blood red skies' is an interesting choice for a Judas Priest song... it was from their 1988 album 'Ram it down'... Rob Halford (vocals) was much younger then (he's 60+ of age in this clip), so his vocals were more piercing in the studio version... Also, they used a drum machine (and keyboards) on the studio track... Apparently, their drummer (at the time) Dave Holland was having health issues and had to be substituted in the studio. That gave 'Blood red skies' this surreal, futuristic sound.
Truthfully, Judas Priest is more famous for ripping heavy metal tunes like 'Painkiller'... 'Hellion/ Electric Eye'... 'Freewheel burning'... 'Metal gods'... 'Gates of Valhalla' 🤘🤘🔥🔥But Priest have a diverse side to their catalog of music as well... songs like - 'Beyond the realms of death'... 'Solar angels'... 'Fever'... 'Death'... Judas Priest have 50 years of music to check out, from the first album 'Rocka Rolla' in 1974 to their latest album 'Firepower' in 2018 (18 studio albums overall).
When I was a kid if you followed early metal you were in a sub music genre, now in an age of sampling and Simon Cowell fame people are realising that the bands we love/loved are very talented musicians. Rob Halford is an old school rock god, well up there with Layne Staley for vocal talent and expression. Judas Priest absolutely shred.
That wasn't a radio hit but you never knew what they were going to play , it's all good.

Judas Priest is band i grown up and love as much as first time i started listen to them around 1981-1982. They have such a big and good catalogue that it is difficult to pick out a favorite song. But my favorite album is Painkiller. It is their hardest and fastet releases but everything on it is top notch.
The studio version is untouchable, Halford here is too old to produce high-pitched soaring screams that make the song epic.
I disagree... the studio version has a very stale, flat 80es production, where this live-version brims with life and intensity...
Although he can't obviously sing that high anymore, I find this version equally impressive. He has such a nice quality to his voice.
This version is way better than the studio version imo. One of my favorites.

1970's Judas Priest was on a planet like no one else. The ancestral lineage to their musical output from 1976-1979 was untraceable. They were a full-fledged 80's metal band touring the world in the 1970's, basically playing 80's metal long before the 1980's ever reared its head.
Favorites are always tough to pick, but if there's one "must song" to listen to, it would be "Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver" from their 1976 masterpiece Sad Wings of Destiny.
Another great performance. I was there right down the front at Glenn Tipton's (red trousers) side, in fact you can briefly see me at the "you'll never take me alive" part. The end section is so awesome. Great reaction.

A lot of people don't know what it really takes to put on a show like this I don't do it as much anymore working with bands on tour stagehand stuff but if you could look and see what's behind the scenes to set this up you would be amazed it's a lot of work lot of dedication from the band all the way down to the crew little bit older now I wish I could still do it but I still do every now and then check out more of the early stuff I think you'll dig it

Just so you know, Blood Red Skies came out on the RAM IT DOWN album in the 1980s. Much older song than this recording.
Rob Halford was definitely not on his game during this recording. It must have been a very late date in a tour.

This is an interesting place to start with Judas Priest.
Most people go straight into the deep end with Painkiller.
This performance was actually from 2011, Rob Halford was about 60 at the time, and still hitting those insane highs. The original song is from 1988.
The Sentinel from 1984 is a great one, a true show of what makes them so special, with the duelling guitar solos (both guitarists go back and forth with a barrage of fast solos).
Victim Of Changes (originally from 1976) is one of the best examples of Rob’s vocal abilities, as is 2014’s Halls Of Valhalla. Those are 2 songs nearly 40 years apart, that should give an idea of how long Rob has been at the top of his game.
And the of course there is the aforementioned Painkiller, which I consider the one song that is the epitome of the entire genre of Metal. The guitar riffs and solos, the drums, Rob’s voice, the theme of the lyrics… it is THE song that if someone asked me “which one song encapsulates the genre of Metal?” Painkiller would be my answer.
Painkiller is the noobs scapegoat song. Most people are just tricked by the modern recording quality of 1990. Rob is far past his prime and the song structures are weak. But, "loud noise good!"
You can easily tell since the painkiller tour has rob sounding terrible live.

with all due respect to sabbath, priest is the most talented complete heavymetal band in history, to truly appreciate their greatness you had to see them live in their prime i was so fortunate to see them twice 80 and 84, their light show was incredible, the amount of base priest puts out live is astonishing, i had to back away from the stage it was beating me up, checkout diamonds and rust live, the one where rob is wearing that long leather gown or coat amazing performance
Underrated album, it really is. They were definitely influenced by J-Rock sensations, Anthem for their next release - Painkiller.

Haven't seen them since about 2012 & wish I had caught them on this tour whenever that was. Rob was still able & Glennie was still functioning well. Best song off of RAM IT DOWN. My favorite Priest songs VICTIM OF CHANGES, SAINTS IN HELL, BURNIN' UP & THE SENTINEL.

Hard to believe, but Rob Halford will become 72 this August 2023!
And he's still one of the *very best* metal vocalists out there - even though obviously his range isn't like it used to be, to me Rob actually sounds a bit fuller these days.
He's always had a phenomenal control over his breathing and diaphragm, and has always done both clean vocals in his full range, and growls and raspy screams too.
He has (had) a vocal range from C2 to C#6, and full control over everything in between.
If you would see Rob (and Priest) in their prime, I'd suggest a live recording from early 80s - preferably the song 'Victim Of Changes'. There's a few.

By 86 you can see a clear decline each year forward.
"Condemned to hell!" in the sentinel is a good barometer.
86, 88, 90, etc... Each tour, that note got lower and weaker. 84 was his real prime. Maybe even 83.
@@adameves5970 disagree. He stopped drinking in 86. I've seen every tour since 81. His voice was pretty ragged during the 84 tour. From 86 on he was crushing it. 91 during Painkiller, I caught two shows and he was as high or higher and stronger than I'd seen him ever previously. Even on his small Halford tour for Made of Metal, he opened with Resurrection and absolutely crushed it. I was not expecting him to hit the notes in the chorus and he did. He's petered off and picks and chooses parts in songs now. Even on a show for the Redeemer of Souls they surprised the hell out of everybody and did Screaming for Vengeance...and nailed it. I still have it on my phone.

@@adameves5970 yeah I heard you. You didn't understand what I said. I've listened to them since 80. I've seen every tour. I analyze his voice quite a bit. I'm a singer and bass player as well. You're going to make a statement based on a line delivered in one song. Rob likes to reinterpret and deliver his vocals differently in many songs over the years. I'm stating he was able to deliver a better and stronger voice after 86 when he stopped drinking. He himself, Tom Allom and his band mates all concur with that assessment. If his "peak" was 84(his live performances were quite hit and miss during that time, he has stated as much) yet in 91 during the Painkiller tour they performed many songs that had him at his "limit" and he performed them as well or better than ever, including Painkiller. You commented on my statement he was at his peak between 86-2000. I stand by that because I witnessed it. I also witnessed a Defenders tour that had him gaining weight and struggling and rough sounding vocals that I did not witness after that tour, for a long time. He was no where near his peak in 84.

If you want HEAVY madness with immense excitement, go for PAINKILLER, if you want to be mind blown with halfords talent (the vocalist) go for eaither DREAMER DECIEVER (2 sequential songs) or VICTIM OF CHANGES, and if you want an Awesome song in all directions, definitly go for ELECTRIC EYE
