@yo hi There's a big difference. Conspiracy theories aren't always wrong. Breaking the phrase down, it just mean a suspicion of some secret plot. I never heard of Epistine island but looking it up, I don't see how it is all that crazy. A island privately ran while used by a pedophile for sexual abuse isn't all to hard to imagine. There are some additional BS claims that I found alongside the island.
The conspiracy theories that people refer to nowadays are BS near impossible things that is unfalsifiable. The example you provided is based on what can happen in reality and likely had factual basis. Flat earth has been thoroughly debunked but the proponents still believe in it, denying any evidence of the contrary as lies and forged evidence. That means you can never prove something wrong, because any evidence you bring up is automatically dismissed as unreliable WITHOUT proving that it is unreliable.
Of course evidence can be unreliable, but that needs to be proven to be the case or else you can't believe anything. Oh but wait they can believe in the "facts" they come up with because somehow they are more trustworthy???? Despite their "facts" can't explain majority of the natural phenomenon. yet they don't question their own theories while the accepted scientific theories have survived numerous scrutiny. It is backed by being able to accurately predict celestial events and explain all observed phenomenons. Whenever it was wrong, it was revised with new facts and that is how science works. We accept we were wrong and we fix it. Conspiracy theorist doesn't, they just double down.
Lets give aliens a go now. It is slightly more grounded in terms of plausibility. Science does say aliens is a very likely possibility, yet it is of course a paradox that we don't see any. There have been many explanations but they can't be proven. There are also new estimates that may explain why we haven't detected aliens, and why they haven't detected us. You can look this up, I'm not going to go in to it. I do believe I am scientifically literate and I'm not afraid to say we just aren't sure, there are hypothesis and estimates but that is all they are.
So believing aliens exist is perfectly reasonable since with out current understanding, mathematically speaking there should be plenty. HOWEVER, believing aliens arrived to Earth thousands of years ago, hid and pretend to be us while manipulating society is not. Most outrageous conspiracy theories follow this trend. There is some logic based on facts and then at some point it jumps to realm of pure fiction all of a sudden. The latter have no evidence to support.
If anyone make such a claim, they need some real solid evidence. The theory doesn't just need to be able to explain something. It needs to be able to predict the outcome of the phenomenon you are seeking to explain and withstand scrutiny. To do that there needs to be a condition in which you can prove it wrong. If that condition isn't met, then it is likely correct. Problem with conspiracy theories is that they don't have any conditions in which you can prove it to be false because any conditions is just denied. Nor do they tell you something about the future as all the predictions these people make never came true. All their claims are made retroactively.
Don't ever give these people the time of day. I did't realize how long this ended up being but it just pisses me off because conspiracy theorists convince people by using logical fallacies. Anyone trying to argue against them can't because they are using logic in their argumentation. This means the conspiracy theorist always win because everyone is playing on their rules. Bystanders will then believe the "winner." but once you break down how their logic falls flat, then they lose all their convincing powers.

I talked with a flat-earther and concluded that his version of the Earth was indeed cylindrical, as he admitted that there was depth to the disk (full of oil). I asked him why we don't see cylinders in space and he told me they're being covered up by the government. I told him I have personally viewed the planet Saturn through a telescope and even if what I was seeing was the round end of a cylinder how could he explain the rings, which I observed were surrounding the planet at an angle. He got angry and told me I was just trying to trip him up.

Some may eventually begin to see that they are painting themselves into increasingly more absurd arguments in order to support their prior absurdities. Whereas if you attack them they will just retreat into familiar territory, because they believe that they are more intelligent and more aware than everyone else.

@@christianewert1461 I think part of the problem is that no US civilian ever experienced the war directly: we have no parents or grandparents to describe the horror of air raids from German bombers, what it was like to live in a city under German occupation, or to see your Jewish friends and family rounded up and shipped away. They only see what has been written down and recorded in photographs and videos, i.e. media. And once someone distrusts the media, they suspect everything the media reported on was fake. I think that's why so many Americans deny the holocaust, among other things.
That was the part I commented on as well. Believe all the conspiracies you want but denying one of the worst atrocities to ever occur is going too damn far.

Just because most babies that were born inside a camp didn't survive, doesn't mean none of them did. However, someone who has numbers on their arm could not have been born at one of the camps. The only camp where people were tattooed with a number was Auschwitz, and not everyone was tattooed. If this person was born at a camp, he would have been hidden, or he would have been killed by the nazis, so he could not have been tattooed.

AIPAC in particular angers me more as they are promoting a loyalty for a foreign nation, and they are incredibly powerful with a ton of money backing their efforts, a main effort they make is to brand anyone who dislikes their organization or Israel as anti Semitic, which I know for me personally is not true, nor do I think it is true for the representatives that have somewhat recently spoken out against the humanitarian injustices in Israel AND the issues with AIPAC.

@Matt James I would also suggest making the teaching of logic compulsory in all public schools. If pupils don't get a minimum of 75% they don't graduate. Most, if not all, of the world's problems can be solved by the application of logic and rational thought. Tyrants would encounter considerably more difficulty in coming to power and evil would be that much more difficult to exercise with a logical, rational and analytical population who are able to identify and expose fallacious, disingenuous and specious reasoning.
When you put conspiracy theorists together, you'll have hours of entertainment.

Space travel technology is a completely different branch than 'shape shifting' which with our current understanding, the most likely method is via optical illusion or maybe genetic manipulation. Neither of which is linked to space travel. Although space travel in significantly long distances may benefit or even require developments in those two fields. But here lies the problem. How far are these aliens? If they are relatively close, they may not need to biologically engineer themselves to survive the journey. Thus they would not certainly have 'shape-shifting' technology if they arrived on Earth as that line of technology does not need to be a precursor for them to reach us.
Also since we do not know of such technology, we can't even prove if it is theoretically possible despite the guy claiming he is sure that would be the case. Since we know FTL is not possible for example, it would be stupid to say that is a possible line of development. So if shape-shifting is impossible, then it would also mean that line of development is impossible. We also aren't really sure if such developments are guaranteed to be linked because we haven't remotely reached to that point in space travel where genetic manipulation is somehow required.
