Gimme some funk and Soul: the family's Kia Soul EV review.

  • The Soul EV (or e-Soul, depending on your location) is the e-Niro's sibling. A bit more striking looking: some would say ugly, some would say beautiful; definitely interesting. The life of the party in fact. If the e-Niro is wearing a smart shirt, the Soul EV is wearing bright shoes, a fancy belt and probably some sort of hat made out of fruit.
Something I desperately needed was a thesaurus as I used the word funky ten times to describe the Soul. Just for the sake of clarity, I mean that in the British way - stylish; cool; modern - certainly not in the American way - smelly.
Opinion is so divided on the look of the Soul, I suppose you could use whichever definition you prefer.
What can't be denied is that it delivers a fantastic range, decent power and a distinctive look at a relatively good price point.
Something I couldn't test was the UVO app which allows you to check your battery state of charge, start air conditioning etc. Apparently it's very good when it works!
Whether you'd want this or the e-Niro is the question and I hope this vid will help you make up your mind.
To be honest, my wife couldn't really make up hers, but watch along and tell us what you think.
    Skip the waffle! Chapters ahoy:
00:00 - On the way to Kia
    01:35 - Flaviana's first impressions
06:17 - Quick drive: "This is going to be a boring review”
08:50 - "What is this ugly thing?”
    10:47 - Boot/cargo dimensions
    14:34 - The back seats
    16:42 - A dog in the boot
    17:05 - Soul dimensions
    17:18 - The HUD
18:26 - "I can't believe you didn't show me Fart Mode in the Tesla”
19:30 - Inaccurate speed limit on HUD
    19:47 - The exterior
23:26 - The interior: buttons and features
    31:36 - Flaviana doesn't like the display
33:02 - A seemingly irrelevant comment about the Fiat 500
    33:45 - Flaviana's final thoughts
    36:04 - Andrew's final thoughts

Thanks for the review. Really enjoyed the “family review” as it lends more to the whole situation. And you have to admit, Mrs EV does not mince her words. Also enjoyed the same style when looking at the model 3, so I think you’re better as a team, unless you start doing 911’s on a race track etc. But I would n’t have thought that would be your next project ! Good vibes.

You can actually slide the booth shelf down (I left the polystyrene organizer in the wheel well though) It buys you some space, having the cables bagged and somewhere with the luggage is slightly better imho, since having luggage on the shelf wouldn't allow you to access that space anyways... It's a brick on wheels, but I honestly love my e-Soul (the original tyres are rubbish though)

Nice video! FYI, the eSoul is based on the same base as the Kona Electric, so it has a shorter wheelbase than the eNiro, which makes the rear passenger room of the eSoul shorter as well as the trunk depth, but it does have more headroom.

I agree that the design is cool but would like them to be more adventurous with the colours available. You do need as you say some funky colours.

Great review. You have a lovely family. Trivial comment. We have a niro the same as yours. To stop the cable for phone getting bent push it through the little hole at front of centre console and put phone in there. I put my phone on as a wifi hot spot sometimes. That brings up on the car screen charging points and their status. Its OK but not great. Do you know if that works in continental europe?

We purchased a 2019 Kia Soul EV last year, and a 2020 on this year (ours is white great for keeping cool on those hot summer road trips), we love both cars and especially the 2020, made a number of 2000KM trips using available 150KW chargers and the trips were flawless, great range even at 110 to 115KM/hr, great car in tech, spec and drive ability!

Thanks for the review, Andrew. I do like the styling of the Soul but would buy the Niro. Based on reviews I have seen on the Soul, the one thing it does seem to excel at over the Niro is the sound system so I guess it is marketed at the young.

I didn’t get a chance to test that properly but I’d be surprised if it’s much better than the latest e-Niro which has fantastic audio. The Soul has Harman/Kardon where the e-Niro is JBL although I believe they’re two different brands from the same company?!

  • @ScrapKing73
    @ScrapKing73 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Went with this over the e-Niro, in part because the boxier shaper makes the trunk (I'm Canadian, sorry) more space efficient, and because of the HUD, and the higher sitting position, and the short wheelbase making parking easier, and because of the funkiness!
BjØrn's banana box test shows that the high ceiling mostly makes up for the trunk being shorter front-to-back.

I test drove that blue soul, --we hated it nothing like our old soul, it was a diesel Soul shaker in cream with cream interior. Very engaging video. I wonder how long it took to edit?
Point of interest, for any ev, should be, "can you get a bike in the back of it without removing the front wheel?". Apparently you can in an E-Soul.
Can you store the parcel shelf under the boot floor?
I am getting a 2nd ev, and have decided to get an E-Soul ex-UK (I live in NZ, and they are not available new here). I considered getting an e-Niro but the base model here, despite $78K price tag (approx £39k) doesn't even have heated seats or steering wheel and there's no heat pump. You have to pay another $10k for these!!! So I expect the Soul will offer me much more car, for much less cost than the Niro.
The space in the boot I think I can live with ,even being a cyclist, as I know people can get a bike in the back easily with the seats folded, Not so easy in the Tesla 3, but possible. Just. And then there are the usable roof rails rated upto 100Kg load.
The additional benefit of the flat back to the car is it will apparently accept a rear-mounted bike rack if you need more space, and want to take more bikes.
So, in your next reviews, why not include the "will it take a bike?" cargo test. 👍

  • @Russwig
    @Russwig 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I love my 2015 Soul EV+. It is my primary short distance (35 miles one way) vehicle. I can get a decent amount of stuff in the back with the seats down. Would prefer if the lower back seat flipped up against the front seats so that the space was flatter for more cargo. It is not a good highway vehicle, much better range on backroads and it is not suited for long road trips with more than 2 people. Adding a roof storage system would greatly increase drag an so shorten range.

    • @ohkay8939
      @ohkay8939 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The (possible, not definite) issue that intrigues me on the Polestar is how they deal with data collection. It has full Android, and I haven't been able to find out where your data goes and how it's stored etc. If it goes to Google, that immediately rules out Polestar for me. That is an issue with electric cars in general anyway, for some reason manufacturers seem to think "EV" means it's got to be connected and you buying EV gives them free reign to collect your travel information and whatever else they can glean from meta data.

I also agree that the Nexen tyres are crap and will be changing over to either the Michelin Cross Climate Plus or the Nokien WR G4 as it rarely gets below zero here. My wife drives the e Nero and she loves her car. On the topic of boot space, being able to lower the floor allows me to take my bins to the recycle depot for garden waste without issue. Nice car for tight city/town spaces, and dragging kids in and out of, with all their paraphernalia. We see Souls and Niro’s around and they look great...same for the Kona.
But Mrs EV keeps saying she prefers them “big, tall and chunky”, so why not hang on for the Y? And you have the supercharger network for those road trips.

    • @MrEV

I had my mind set on the ID.3 as far back as when I bought my e-Golf - which I loved. In the end I changed it for a 70-plate eNiro4 which was available from stock - ordered and delivered within a week. My VW dealer couldn't give me a date when I could even see an ID.3 in the flesh! What finally decided it though, was the interior of the Kia. It has physical switches and buttons and a much more traditional feel. The look of the ID.3 interior and dependence on touchscreen controls put me off. All down to personal preferences of course.

Got this on order, pick it up next week. I did have an eNiro on order but cancelled it to get this. Reason? - (a) I find the eNiro to be too boring. Yes , the counter argument is that the Soul is 'divisive' in looks but I like that. My sister made the comment that she used to work with the most boring man in the world and that she could picture his car being an eNiro.
What else. Well (b) I can get in now. (c) I can get it for 32k, which is 4.5k less than the eNiro 4+ with few compromises on spec. (d) higher ride height. (e) HUD, which I love.

Blue is nice. Although if it had had a red stripe down the side (just below the door handles) you'd have got a more "A-Team" look.
For doing some running around, taking items to exhibitions/competitions (plants/artwork/ etc) I think it would be great. I have a feeling that it might be a bit of a let down on a road trip where the bigger internal space would be better.
I'm wondering if being higher up means your view out the front is apparently closer to the road but not actually that different to the Niro?
Knobs. I do wonder if the Tesla has gone too far in moving all the controls to the touch screen. (I may have to start using the voice control instead.)... so I'm quite liking the more traditional knobs and buttons here.

We looked at several EVs including the Niro and decided on the Soul because the Niro was way too "normal" for Seniors! :-) So we have had the 2020 Neptune Blue Soul EV for a year and it is the only car that always makes me smile when I go to get in. Some other observations. I just finished a year of complete stats of charging it and the real range in Canada for me is between about 470 km average in summer to around 300km average in winter. We bought it because it is higher therefore easy to get in and out. With the boot floor in the lower position we have found it is fine for our lifestyle - our dog has a "seat" that raises her on the back seat so she can see out of the window so she likes it too. UVO is fine but a bit slow to load - nice for pre-heating or cooling. BTW we have cooled front seats too, but alas no roof rails - there is a roof rack that will fit but it is very expensive. It does have cup holders in the back arm but curiously no easy pull to reveal them. HUD shows not only speed and limit, but blind spot warnings and navigation if being used. My HUD does have correct speed limits but is sometimes out of date. We changed the tires for All Weather Nokian WR G4s and they handled our winter well and great on the dry roads. My stats will help us see if there is a range penalty but up to now any differences are more likely to have been caused by weather and terrain than different tread patterns and compounds etc
