    Got mine in January to replace a Leaf 40 and have never regretted it. My range anxiety has disappeared and to drive it’s a generation leap on the Leaf. I’m in Dublin and the car comes without the SUV pack which I prefer also. I’m usually getting around 480kms on a full charge even if I do check out the acceleration occasionally! Only thing I’m missing is the app which is only coming in now. Tell Chops to indicate when overtaking as that cancels LKA. Love the video and am looking forward to the next one. Your original appraisal vid of the car on FC pointed me to the car.....

      It's always interesting to hear what is expected from people in the mainstream market. Enthusiasts tend to lose track of that, I know I have at times... but you don't tick these people off, they hold all the money. So it's interesting to get a perspective of what the mainstream market wants in a car (or any machine for that matter), because sometimes.... you don't have to too much to please them.

    It's good to come back and look at these type of videos after a couple of years. Our search for an EV has been a bit rubbish but I have finally narrowed it down to a fight between the 38.3kwh Ioniq and a 64kWh Soul. We only need longer range two or three times a year which swings it towards the Ioniq but when we do go on the longer journeys we really need to be able to go 140 miles non-stop at any time of year which puts the Soul marginally in the lead as there will never be any range anxiety at a time when it would be stressful to have it.

    So, it's either Mrs and Mrs Smith the movie, or Mr and Mrs Smith in the Kia Soul. I am not in the market for an EV yet, but this video was very good. I loved Mrs Smith's comments about Tesla, Jonny's about taking a driving test and lane assist, and both of you about being old-school drivers etc. A great review of what seems to be a very good EV. A certain other channel (cough'fullychareged'cough) is really missing Jonny big time. I've subscribed :)

    Regarding KIA's Quality and service it has been great. I have a 2014 Soul +. and live here in Yuma, AZ.. During the summer we reach temperatures of 110 degrees +. Never have I had any cooling problems. My car has had three cross country trips .West coast to East coast and back. (round trip average 7000 miles) and at speeds up to 85 miles per hour. Great long trip car. I now have over 75,000 miles which have been completely trouble free. I have replaced 1 battery and a one set of tires, every thing else is original. Your review was great! Keep up the good reporting.

    With more than a year and 20,000 km (less than a "normal" year due to COVID), including all four seasons (Canadian winter included), on my pretty blue 2020 e-Soul I have decided this is my favourite car ever. I've had quite a few cars since a fifteen year old me towed my first one home in the early seventies, and loved them all, but this is the best one so far. I can't imagine ever buying another gas or diesel vehicle. Although I never use the lane keeping feature mentioned for local driving, I regularly make a 550 km journey to see family on what Johnny would call motorways, and for those trips the adaptive speed control along with the lane keeping assist make it easy to arrive relaxed and not needing to call my chiropractor. I love that by holding the left regen paddle I can boost the regen braking and come to a full stop. Since getting accustomed to that, I rarely use the mechanical brakes. My summer range has averaged 480 km, with it dropping to around 300 in our cold winter. Even with the dramatic winter season drop in range, I recently finished planning a 4,500 km road trip to our west coast next winter, which appears to be quite doable. It's a shame about that odd looking SUV package you have to take over there, but I would love to have those roof rack rails!! It's true the purchase price was a bit hard to swallow, but I figure our overall ownership cost is about 25% less than if we had purchased the equivalent gas version given we normally drive about 35,000 km/yr. Total "Fuel" cost so far = C$320 (£182) and regular service, which included installing our snow tires = C$80 (£45)! Great review as always, and very worthwhile to have the additional second opinion of the other better half of the car pervert household.

Love the adaptive cruise control and equally queuing for the recycling in Richmond where there are signs to turn off your idling engines on every lamppost. No problem with the Soul. As you say it has great performance and our average comes at just over 4 Miles per KWH. A mix of urban London and motorway driving. We are still cracking the software which is a new concept from a previous dumb diesel Citroen C3

    Picked up a 2018 soul ev a month or so ago and have have got to say it's amazing. It really has surprised me how good it is after having owned 3 previous ev's. Obviously the updated model has the increase on range but previous models come in way under £15k. If you can work with 120 miles of true every day range it's a less than half price option with half the range to the new e soul

    Great review! We're getting ours next month and can't await it. We test drove it and it was amazing. As an old VW TDI driver I was blown away by the power and silence. And to be honest: On long trips some breaks are cool to slow down life. And I'm amazed by the cockpit design. I really don't get why decades of making things more practical and easier to use for a driver are thrown away just because the engine is electric! Why? To tap with cold fingers on a tablet and search for the heating button to react?!? No thanks, I want physical buttons I can push and get the response without looking if I touched the right spot on a tablet...

Of course it's been a really cold winter (in Scotland), and with covid we haven't been able to use it as much as we'd like to, but it does everything so much better than our previous car, (BMW 330e), including the ride. It would be hard to pick out a favourite feature, it's such a good all-rounder. Really comfortable, efficient, despite living in a (very) hilly place. Beautiful to drive. Wonderful sound on the system. Just wonderful. If anyone out there is wondering, try one. We can totally recommend it. Thank you again.

    Comfortable, roomy, and well thought out instrument panel.
    If I've any criticism it's that the media center doesn't have options to filter or search for records. I've got rather a long list of music on my iPhone and it takes a while to scroll through it.
    Currently 5000km driven, 10.000 less than it would have done without the lockdown.
    On eco mode when not exceeding 100kmh I do get the listed 450ish km range. Which surprises me a lot as most cars only get about 2/3 of the stated range at most.

    I have a very specific need in any car, as my wife is disabled and I need to get a wheelchair in, oh and the wife too. I have tried her's, which has suspension, so needs the wheels taking off to fit in any car. The wheelchair fits in lovely standing up, which is the safest way to insert it and avoid scratching the interior. My only problem is the insurance level (Ioniq 14 v Soul 24}, so I am probably going to get an 2022 Ioniq, even though the chair will have to lay flat. I don't need the range and there is a 39kwh Soul available now, but I need to test drive both.
    This will be my first EV and I am having my 80's home elecrics assessed first. to make sure I can have a 7.5kw charger. If I vcan't then it will have to be a hybrid car.

    Great video Jonny! I've always quite liked the Soul in all it's generations...it's just got some spunk and quirkiness to it. Your video has quite sold me on the Soul EV as well...only issue to me is cost...
    I just find all EVs so ridiculously expensive, at least here in Canada. I get they have a price premium and the technology is relatively new...but that being said, EV's aren't really THAT new on the market and yet their prices seem to remain really high. A base Kia Soul petrol here has an MRSP of $21,000 CAD (plus tax, plus fees, etc with the way our car prices work).....the Soul EV is $42,000! Double the price for the same car!
    Don't get me wrong, I would love to consider one as a DD (especially as the Soul EV has a very good range), but so many people just can't because it's out of their price range :(
    The same cost issue applies to other EVs as well, at least here in Canada, if you want something with a comparable range to a petrol car.

      The issue really is the ICE are polluting for free with no penalty applied to the price, while EV’s get tiny help from the Feds ...that’s all. Look at Norway and you will understand where the crux of the issue is .... I love my 2018 Soul EV. Best car I have driven yet, especially if it’s for city duties ... I am seriously looking into the new larger battery version to replace my second car or replace both my current cars going to one car household.

    By the looks of it, the charge port is the same as the Kona E, and here in Canada we have an occasional problems with heavy snow/ freezing rain because the port isn’t sealed well enough. It freezes the inside of the port and you have trouble opening it ,unless you blow heat on it or have a heated garage. Great review.

I had a Leaf mk1 several years ago and went back on business lease after two years - generally pleased. Now have a Volvo XC90 T8 hybrid and very please and pulls big caravan no issues, but it was time to swap in my wifes Panda 4x4 and wanted to go back electric so decided on the Soul, and what a decision, absolutely brilliant, not quite as quick as the Volvo T8 (0-60 5.5 secs a real beast) but around 7 secs to 60 is no issue. I don't drive like a lunatic but to overtake is so safe and clean. I have seen 284 mile on the range clock after full charge on my 7kW podpoint, not yet emptied 'the tank' but so far seems to be exceeding Kia's words. Clicked on the eco++ button a few days ago and it showed 293 miles on the clock !! getting better by the week

    I've had the same 2020 Soul in blue since May 2019 in British Columbia, Canada. Interesting differences: no built-in roof rails or charging port light (I'd love to have both), but mine has no plastic cladding on the sides, like you were saying you'd prefer, and seat cooling, which is pretty lux on a hot day! The real-world range is excellent. We drove with luggage, family and dog at highway speeds with AC on up and over the Rocky Mountains, which took a lot of juice, but made it 250km with over 50km still in the tank before we stopped and charged, so pretty decent.

      Toss a coin. A. You go to the gas station and pay through the nose each week. Or - B. Pay a fraction of that on your lecky bill each quarter !? I will never ever, ever go back to an ICE vehicle again, ever. Also, the cost is really all about the size of the battery.

      Victor Seal I’m on board with the benefits, it’s the price of entry that’s too high. £35k/£650pcm is just too much in my view. New tech though so in time the price will come down, at least I hope so.

      Keep looking for your opportunity. It's coming. Battery prices are dropping 15-20% every year, and of course the more nice EVs are sold this year, the more nice used EVs will eventually become available. So far, those price drops have gone mainly into longer range, but I do think there is a range, where once there are enough chargers, and enough fast chargers, and if the car can charge fast enough, that you start running into the law of diminishing returns. 500 mile range is obviously better than 300, but if you don't take that many trips over 300 miles, and you can charge at 250kw, how much better is it?

    At £34k that's still a bit too pricey for the average joe. I think when VW finally get it together with the ID.3 the prices might start to come down. Good review though and I'm more impressed with this than the Tesla blandmobile.

      Unfortunately the ID3 will not have the range of the Soul or e-Niro in its launch, and the longer range VW will most likely cost way over 40k for similar spec. In addition VW are still playing catch up, and I still question if I could trust them.

    • @olik136
      @olik136 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      weirdly it also seems to be 34k € in Germany (so like £30k)- and we get 12 color schemes (that all kind of suck and look about the same)

      Agee there’s huge expectation on the ID3 - even if I don’t get one, I want it to tip the balance for EV adoption. Tesla is amazing but there’s still no sub £30k Tesla runaround (a Tesla “Golf”). We need VW and other mainstream manufs can bring ‘normal’ and ‘ordinary’ to the conversation.

  • @ruk2023--
    @ruk2023-- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I really feel like a lot of people look at Tesla design the wrong way. In my opinion, it's deliberately designed to look as "normal" as possible to sell. If the Model S came out with the design language of the cybertruck nobody would have bought it.
    Human beings overall are very conservative and we need our changes to happen gradually and car manufacturers histories are littered with examples of out there designs that nobody bought.

    • @thetreagust462
      @thetreagust462 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way the model s and cybertruck are two extremes though and so not a great analogy. Looks are subjective I guess. Tesla’s look ok but I think they could’ve done much more and got away with much more in the design language.

    In Canada, we were able to get this one in September 2019. Lower range model 258 km range (per KIA), charge it at 90% to make the battery last longer so I got 245 km usable range (right now). Plenty of range to drive around the city for a week or for long drives. Still spins the tires when you take off. Adaptive cruise control is just amazing. You can "take your hands off the wheel" and just let it drive, detect the lines and keeps me in there. The charge port plugs are annoying as they are not integrated of the doors and you need to always pull it out. Rapid charging degrades the battery so for me is Level 2 all the time (at home). The battery actually sticks out from the bottom (1-2") which is annoying in some situations (looking from the side). Went for Snow White Pearl. Not missing HUD at all, HUD is not the future. Love the remote UVO Intelligence control from the app (awfully slow) to pre-heat/pre-cool the car. Auto regen works, just set it and forget it. (need to hold it for few seconds to set it). In the sport mode you are faster than anybody on the street. Inside is a comfy interior, in the trunk, well I fit in there my borzoi fine so. (Trunk is deep). Lane keep assist is excellent. Revers camera is clear, totally clear. It notifies you of children, passing cars, it can apply the brake if it suddenly sees a car. Ford C-max was super quiet compared to Kia Soul on the highway. The car is quiet in the city sub 100 km/hr, it's just the speeds over 120fpm when it gets noisy. Mine does not have premium audio and is completely fine. The rotary gear selector is nice. Cabby holes are annoying with the shiny glossy surfaces which go always covered with fingerprints. Voice control is excellent even for addresses. Worth $42,595.00. Certainly. Worth buying this car over a gasoline car. No. You do the math, it is still expensive; if you are looking for a car to get you from point A to point B comfortably.

    Much appreciated review. Here in the US introduction of the Soul EV has been delayed until (likely) the first quarter of 2021. Here in the Pacific Northwest around the Puget Sound and Seattle Souls are very popular and the range of the Soul's demographic appeal is extraordinary. I see "twenty something" hipsters from Seattle, young families, and downsizing seniors tooling around in them. And at less than 14' in length Souls enjoy another benefit here in the Puget Sound area; a significant discount on our steep ferry fares that connect communities throughout the Puget Sound.

    Nice review! We bought likely around the same time -- we're on day 91 of owning ours in Canada -- great car, only have put about 1200km on it during the pandemic - about 3.8 miles/kW average so can do better, but we absolutely love it. With warmer weather we saw range up to 310 miles, which is incredible and makes me happy we chose a Soul.

    We got ours about a month ago, ride & handling are great for a car of its type, supple ride and reasonable handling. Rolls around corners, but we’re not going round a race track.
    Good amount of shove when the foot buries the accelerator.
    It’s well able to do a 200miles round trip, although expensive to buy, start saving money on the off when “refuelling”.

    We have in one year purchased our second Kia Soul EV, our first one last year was the 2019 30KW model, I needed a card for travelling for work and my wife needed hers to commute. Love both cars, but the 2020 Limited (this is the 64KW model) you can get the 39KW called the Premium here in Canada with lessor trim, no heat pump, no 3 way heated cooled seats and no Sun roof on the lesser trim. Just had a 2000KM road trip and had absolutely no issue with charging along the route. We usually strive for 20% battery level on the next charging session, where we were getting typically 72-75KW for a good portion on 200KW chargers and it is fast. I notice your seats have 2 levels of heating, ours have 3 levels of heating and cooling and do not have that SUV trim pieces, so it is lean and clean! Almost bought a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range +, did not like the seat height, but the Soul EV has the same seat height as the Tesla Model Y! Great for these older bones to get in and out, love the seats. I just wished for the Grey seat colours with blue piping that our 2019 Soul has, this one has the all black seats and interior. Anyhow we have just over 10K KM and as usual it is as reliable as ever! Continue to enjoy yours, we certainly are enjoying both our Soul Ev's!
