It's high time chargers were programmed not to care whether you plug in before or after pressing the buttons. Or if it really matters, they should make it quite clear in the instructions. Better still, if you plug in first, it shouldn't even need to ask you which cable you are going to use. Why is so-called smart electronics incapable of spotting the obvious?

it's called user testing. not just the people who run these. They should film their mum trying to use it for the first time and find out if it's REALLY obvious what to do. Most would fail. Looks like the latest ones are a lot better!

Andrew Till/Mr EV. Andrew. Heed the comments here about firmly pressing the charger plug into the car socket whilst the charger is doing the handshake. Its a high current connection and expects a secure connection. Same with all public fast DC chargers. And as they are frequently plugged/unplugged the contacts become worn over time. I’ve had no problems with DC fast connection on Ecotricity since pressing the plug in firmly during the handshake.

Watched the whole journey Canterbury to Land's End to John O'Groates and back to Canturbury and this has confirmed that signing up for the lease of the e-Niro 4+ last week was the right thing to do. What I will say though is whilst there were plenty of chargers about, the final talley of £140 for the whole journey was fine interestingly you didn't split out how many of the miles you did were free as there were 3 chargers where you didn't get charged. Also why is it that EV charge stations treat their customers like second class citzens? Not one charge point (including the Shell Garage ones) had any under cover. So if you had to faff around (as you did on occassion) and its raining you get wet, whereas our ice cousins do not.

CPS can be really annoying on CCS, especially their older chargers.
Quite often need to call to reset machines.
Sometimes it's worth supporting the cable while it negotiates as it's the two top pins in the plug that communicate with the car.

Scheduled charging can be inefficient if the driver does not remember too remove that functionality before expecting to charge to between 80%-100%. You mentioned this n another video. Seems like Kia should consider to set an audible tone, text message or carrier pigeon notification-reminder.
4:14: Once I make my e-vehicle purchase, should I begin thinking about trips in kWh hours?
At a gas station, there is an attendant, who could possibly help you at the pump. Do any charge stations offer that service?
This was stressful and I was just watching. I think anyone CONSIDERING a future purchase of an electric vehicle should subscribe to these types of channels to flatten the learning curve😅

Very interesting to see your real world experiences and how the charging network performs in practice, seems mostly fine with some quite annoying niggles getting charging to start. I’m probably looking to make the EV switch when I next change my car, when the current (petrol) one reaches its third birthday, end August 2022, so just over a year from now. Currently looking at the Kia Soul. My annual mileage is pretty low so I think the 240-260 mile real world range should suit me well for my occasional longer journeys. I’m in the north of Scotland so your journeys to/from here are mostly pretty reassuring.

In the mean time, there's ABRP (a better route planner). It has all the chargers, built in sat nav and if you take the time to set it up, you can enter your car model, preferred cruising speed, state of charge when you leave, preferred state of charge at each stop and final destination and it will work out the quickest route including charging time. This sometimes means a couple of fifteen minute stops because you get a faster charge rate than running the battery all the way down and then charging to full. It's based on real car data and takes into account weather and hills.
On some cars (including Kia and Tesla) you can integrate it with the car so that it takes live data from your car.

    • @SirHackaL0t.

The CYC card use on CPS is fine, but in the rest of the country the Polar Plus card I have does all the CYC chargers so I don’t bother carrying the CYC card with me.
That caught me out when I visited Dundee to try the charging hubs. The Polar card doesn’t work and as I didn’t have my CYC card on me I ended up phoning support.
They offered to send me a CPS RFID card through the post. When I informed them that I wanted to charge now rather than in a couple of days they looked for my CYC details and eventually gave me a free charge. I had to move between 4 different rapid chargers before they could get one working remotely.
A very helpful taxi driver offered the use of his rfid card but I wanted to see how it was when you had an issue.
What would happen if you needed an RFID card to fill up at Esso or BP petrol station but couldn’t because you needed an RFID card that they would send you.
Being able to use a debit/credit card like we do for everything else we purchase would be much appreciated assuming that they didn’t use it as an excuse to charge more.

@@SirHackaL0t. as far as I'm aware, the CYC card works with CPS and CPS cards with CYC chargers. The CYC card should also work with POLAR and POLAR with CYC chargers. The problem is that Polar doesnt work with CPS cards and vice versa. This is how it was a year ago anyway. Theoretically, they are all the same company (these days) so they should get their act together....sometime. This is why I got a CYC card as it will work in England and Scotland.

you need to go back and get the picture but next time look for the cheapest chargers. may be do a coast road trip

You get used to how the different chargers work especially the ones you normally use. It’s much easier now than 3 years ago. Some chargers required the car plugged in before using the RFID cards and some required the RFID card first before plugging in. These days most seem to work either way.

I borrowed an ev for a day and decided to give it a quick charge on the Polar network I have the app. It was pouring with rain I got it to work without too many problems but got soaked, after 20 mins sitting in the car I had what I wanted but it wouldn't stop and it kept telling me to scan my card to stop but I used the app? After several attempts I had to phone them and they stopped it remotely, by this time I was drenched. Not a great experience why don't they put charging stations under cover?

When I phoned them they said it shows it was started on the app but couldn't understand why it was asking me to stop it with a card.

PICNIC - the frustrating experience with Andrew using the Scottish chargers. Problem is In the Chair Not In the Computer. He didn’t follow the correct sequence. Most charging of EVs occurs at home on low price overnight tariffs eg, Octopus Go, with average cost less than 1.5p per mile. In three months E Niro ownership I’ve only used public chargers on four longer journeys, a total of 6 public DC charge sessions. Only the first one did not work as expected because I didn’t know what I was doing (PICNIC). On every other occasion the fast chargers (Ecotricity x3, Ionity x1, Instavolt x2) worked exactly as expected. My overall EV charging costs are less than 3.5p/kWh including public DC charging at c. 30p/kWh. And every drive is a pleasure. Smooth, effortless power with comfort and superior technology. And not contributing to more pollution.

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I like to think of EV ownership as a bit of a voyage of discovery right now. I enjoy the adventure, and most of the people I know who got EVs seem to as well.
I'll agree public charging has a way to go before it's completely painless but if you're able to charge at home, it's really not too much of a problem. It just pays to have a plan B and C if you're going to an area you've not visited before. Scotland is actually one of the best places I've been, despite those glitchy chargers. I wasn't concerned once.
The pros of driving an EV massively outweigh the cons I think, although I fully appreciate that may not be the case for everyone.

Electric vehicles are just better. No noise, no emissions, less fuel costs, less maintenance costs.
Gasoline and diesel are OLD polluting technology. So last century.
Electric cars, electric trucks, electric buses, electric trash haulers, electric snow blowers, electric lawn mowers, electric snow mobiles, electric water craft, electric garden tools, electric mechanic tools, electric motor cycles, electric bicycles, electric scooters, electric farm tractors, electric construction equipment, electric delivery vehicles, ...... everything is going electric. And drivers failing to press the charger plug firmly into the socket to ensure good contact for a high current charge. Eventually manufacturers will add a clamp system to public chargers to overcome this. Andrew was just putting the CPS plug into the socket without attention to a firm pressure during handshake. I’ve had zero issues with Ecotricity chargers since using this technique.
