ABC-7 News: First Beaver Sighting in Palo Alto in 160 Years!

Maybe you have seen us on ABC7 News recently? Last month, Bill spotted a juvenile beaver on one of his trail cameras! Beavers have not been seen in Matadero Creek for over 160 years, meaning that this youngster is the first baby beaver to be seen in the Baylands in generations. Bill had been observing mom and dad beaver since March 2022, although they hadn't been seen since May so he thought that they had abandoned the creek - but on August 18th there they were again, and then came this juvenile.

Hooray! Soon to be followed by river otters and species of water creatures not seen here for awhile. We followed the Martinez Beavers for awhile, but they seem to have moved on so good
for Palo Alto. Beavers are a keystone species and they lead the way for other rare animals to follow.
