I beg to differ. I live in California and had a similar Situation like the one in the story only Except they bought the building and had plans on tearing it down and they started to raise the rent. Compared to what the rent was vs what they started to charge it became unaffordable. Even though I have a job, I didn’t have any family or friends to turn too and the best thing was to sleep in my car. Just because I sleep in my car doesn’t mean I’m shooting up drugs and that’s why I’m homeless etc. it’s much easier for other people to speak on something like homelessness until you’ve experienced. Some people might say oh well try a shelter. Tried that but they wanted to charge me xxx amount of money each month. Like wtf!!? But being that I’m not paying for rent, I’ve been working on a getting a work transfer
Out of state to somewhere cheaper where I can be able to afford rent where I get back to a normal life style again. So please, unless you’ve been homeless or willing to take the time to get to know someone’s story don’t just assume they’re lazy and or drug addicts. Anyone can become homeless

Because people kept voting in these laws that over taxes property owners and restrictions on private properties which ended up artificially increasing the housing markets. The only people are benefiting from this is the government and the corporate firms they have contracts with using tax payers money.
Properties taxes is linked to the housing market and rental market. Any home owners knows how the government constantly taxes property taxes for government services. Affordable housing act is also a government services. All these people who rent already has cheap rent to begin with but once they voted in “affordable housing” they actually voted in a law that increases the housing market. The rent increases they can’t afford is still below market price which applied as affordable housing. But they don’t know that. They assumed their old rent will just get lowered. Also all these other laws like rent control only makes it harder for small private landlords to be landlords which they ended up selling to corporate development firms. Also because of the increases in housing markets less and less people are able to own properties.

So that's why they make policies that sound good but it's meant to destroy the middle class. They want very poor and very rich. No bridge between those two classes. Simple. They cannot stand people like yourself who are in the middle because of they left you alone, you would have the ability to save ALOT of money and one day get to the higher class.

Having lived in an area for a while, your friends, family, and whole life is there, so it's pretty wicked to take that away from people. My dad owns some properties that he rents out to people and some have even inherited the rental contracts from their parents, so they living in our apartments virtually for free. We only file court cases against the people who are clearly using my father's kindness (like they already own another apartment but rent that one out and stay in ours), otherwise if they really cant afford something else, they can stay. Even if my family lives pretty frugally and we can do so much better lifestyle wise if we raised the rent, our lives are more fullfilling knowing that we can help people not become homeless.

That’s an ignorant statement, many people are forced to work in cities they can’t afford because that’s where their job sends them. They may not have the means to leave their job so they have no choice. The real problem is investors hiking up the rent prices in popular areas because they’re greedy pigs.

They jacked up rents to those prices so that they can be compliant with the "affordable housing" laws so they can get that money. That's why they said they had to do it so they can become "affordable." The biggest joke is that tax payers pay that and it only makes the rich richer. "$900 for one bedroom"
    "$1200 for two bedroom"
Half of the occupants should be HALF OF THE PRICE. $900 is insane for one person unless you ensure that every single job in the area is paying every worker a minimum of $900 a week so no one is wasting more than 25% of their monthly income on rent.
$900 is unrealistic for one person housing.
If it's $1200 for two bedrooms then it should be $600 for one bedroom, there is no reason to force single people who want to be on their own to pay a disproportionately higher price. No wonder more and more people are forced to get "roommates" in the normalized trend of having strangers in their personal living space.

@@donnajoseph-barford1076 The same in Florida . Builders are running out of Cheap Land . So their putting as many Homes on an acre as possible . And charging a total fortune with no end in sight . As Rates go down , Home Prices rise . It's never ending . I really don't know where people are getting all of this money ? Not everyone works for the Government .

They were paying $900 per month for a one bedroom apartment? The cost of living must be really high in that city. In my area you can get a nice two bedroom apartment for $900.

This should be illegal. We need rent control in America. This is why so many people are homeless.

They always want the property owners to make less money for affordable rent but is the city willing to take less money for the property taxes to help these homes be more affordable?

If you make 40,000/yr. 25% of that is $10,000/yr or $833.33/mo. That should be the maximum rent in a complex that restricts your income to qualify.
These people are stealing our tax dollars and making it impossible for us to find homes

I experience the samething(while in college). The company that took over didn't increase rent an extra $50-75 but hundreds from $600 (1/1)to $900 plus. No upgrades, people hanging in front of your door & etcetera the area is the hood the majority are on SEC 8(late paying their portion)(& am paying full amount in college full time never late, stay to self). In My case the owners increase rent to the max of what Sec 8 will pay for that area. Unfortunately
People being pushed out of places they can pay the rent/ while working on goals is happening all over especially in big cities.

Instead of this, someone who is rich/ owns apartments, etc should use the houses for the homeless. The money that pays for these houses come from donations, etc. Maybe even these type of places should have work options, coupons, tips on budgeting, etc. And if someone could get these areas sponsored, allow people to work there to help for pay, etc that would be great.

In 2008-2010 I lived in an apt in SC that was 2bd 2ba for $550/mo . They were bought out and turned into so-called "luxury" apts without any real demolition. They now rent for $1125/mo. Due to upgraded kitchen and appliances and upgraded flooring.

This is a damn shame! These people should be ashamed of themselves! I am a renter on the east coast and have a rental company that is a national corporation. My husband is military and I am disabled. We were two days late with the rent when they filed for eviction and added $1800 in fees to our rent. While my husband was deployed over the last year, my plumbing backed up into my house and they didn’t do a thing. How these people get away with this stuff baffles me! My heart is breaking for the people in this video! I hope things work out for them. While I’m not from that area, my husband is from California and I appreciate y’all bringing stuff like this to light.
