Always love seeing the footage you get from the original S5. There is something special about its sensor even compared to the S5II, I agree that the only thing I don't love about these lumix full frame cameras is the readout speeds, and moire
i love this, i’ve shot on the fx6, sony a7c2, blackmagics, ect. something about my s5 always feels so special compared to the others. Nowadays all i see is the s5ii and iix. i’m just glad to see love for this outstanding cinema camera, especially from someone with a great eye for composition.
Still using my S5 and a GH5 as my second camera. Vintage and anamorphic glass all the way. I haven't felt that angst to upgrade once since I got the S5 a few years ago. To me, what I see when I get home and open up Davinci Resolve is what matters, and I don't think anything else is going to make my footage look better. The S5 makes the world look beautiful to me, and so, what's the point of all this? I think that's the point. ;) Awesome video, thanks for sharing.
@@AveryCaudill the other thing that’s crazy to me is the notion that the GH5 is not a good photography camera. I actually use the GH5 as my main camera for still photography, I just don’t understand the problem. :-) We’re pretty privileged if we think the GH5 is not good enough to take pictures, as opposed to running around with your phone. Phones take great pictures, but the creative control that you have with the camera like the GH5 makes it a no comparison. And if you can’t take photos with the GH5, you should take a look at yourself in the mirror. :-) There’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of these new cameras, I’m quite sure they are amazing, but the notion that the S5 or the GH5 can no longer do professional work is bizarre. :-) I’ll put it that way.
i love your color grading!! please do a tutorial on your grading process, really tryin to achieve like yours. i use s5 too and been struggling with grades. hopefully u can teach me.
Wow. The footage you’re able to get out of this camera is incredible. 2 questions: Where are you getting your film grain? It’s the best looking grain I’ve seen. Also, what’s your workflow when looking for music on Soundstripe? I’ve been using it for a few years but that has become an extremely time consuming aspect for me lately. I love the music in your videos and would love to know your favorite artists there. Great work Avery!
@@Palmer_Productions_ thank you!! I use the built in grain in Resolve, I may do a color grading video in the future, and for music I like to find a song that’s similar to what I want (usually in a “cinematic “ or ambient playlist) then hit the similar songs button and browse through there
Amazing footage and sincere review. Really made me switch from that idea of following only certain cameras just for “popularity”. What would you recommend approaching videography (with a lil previous experience) between S5, Fuji xs 20 and Sony A6700 which are ASP-C? I’m really attracted by the Panasonic image quality and texture, but on the other hand the other two cameras are maybe more compact and with great feature too.
2-3 years ago, I switched from my GH5s to the S5. At first, I thought it was a bad idea since the S5 specs seemed worse on paper... But once I moved to the S5, it became hard to let go - the best image quality I’ve ever had from a camera. Recently, I bought the S5II because I occasionally need autofocus, but I was disappointed - the colors and low-light performance are worse. The only thing that stayed the same is the V-Log. Now I’m thinking of selling either the S5 or the S5II🙂
I have a black magic 6k pro, I don't want to get rid of it, but I need a second camera that's more practical, light and with a lot of quality, without a doubt this Lumix would be my choice, after seeing your scenes, I'm more excited and relieved for not having to spend so much money on a Sony
@@AveryCaudill yeah I just found it, no idea how I missed this. Super handy, always hated swapping between the crop from 25 - 50fps. This solves that. Genius.
I own an S5 for stills and I like it, but there's an abundance of videos on here raving about it as a film/video camera, and I just cannot see the appeal. I also own a BMPCC6k Pro, and had a Pocket 4k before that. For this price point, anyone looking for a solid film/video unit should look at the Pocket 4K or 6K because they just blow the S5 out of the water in terms of image quality. The S5 is a great stills camera, albeit with some down-sides, but for video, the image quality is sub-par.
@@AveryCaudill I think from an overall functionality point of view, you might be right, but if we're talking pure image quality, the pocket 4k has BRAW internally and a far superior filmic quality to the image, it's a no brainer. I'm just still yet to see a video of the S5, from a cinematic perspective, where I've thought "wow, that looks good".
Fantastic footages , you are talented and humble person. I am longtime GH5 user with vintage lenses , and a new S5D owner . At the downside section of this video you mentioned you almost always shoot in 24fps , which means you use NTSC for 23.976 fps? It weird because on GH5 there was PAL/NTSC/ and also Cinema mode for 24fps , but i cant find it on S5(D) . Can you confirm this please?
@@AveryCaudill Thanks for the quick response. Let me ask you just one ore question please. what kind of adapter do you prefer to use ( or used ) with your vintage lenses on S5? I ve just got into FF so i purchased a K&F Concept NIK - L (for my AI-s nikkors) and while on the lens side its tight on the sensor side of the adapter there is a tiny little wobble. not a huge issue but i am used to it that on my GH5 with Nikon/M43 Metabones Speedbooster there was not any wobble. Or... wait to see if the SH1 gets a new version, so the price of the SH1 drops on the used market! Either way, I don't think you can go wrong, mate.
Sadly, even V-log is not the same, colors are worse and fine details are not as good (too much sharpening and detail filtering).
