  • In this video I discuss what I learned from Sondheim. I've been reading his book, Finishing the Hat, which contains his collected lyrics with his own comments about them. There is so much valuable information to be gained here, but the overarching rules that are outlined at the beginning are:
    Content dictates form,
    Less is more,
    God is in the detail,
    All in the service of clarity.
    In this video I go into detail about each of these, and how you can incorporate them into your own writing.

    thanks for concentrating such large concepts into easy to digest info. Bo Burnham's new special has the same feel of a musical to me through it's uses of reprises; so I thought I would do further research. This was a great video!!

    Great stuff. Sondheim is a genius and you've distilled a lot of his great lessons here. I recommend the book Sondheim on Music by Mark Horowitz for more in-depth information about how he composes and approaches the music side of things
