since his death last week, i've fallen down the wormhole of sondheim videos. i haven't seen any video essays on this musical so i was SO happy when i found this. i honestly teared up at this, you really were really able to capture the genius of sondheim and this musical. thank you for this, and i would love more sondheim videos from you in the future if you ever planned to do so :)
He is now into legend. Like Oscar before him, and Harold Prince. I’m so sad, I might never musicals ever again. Being in a Sondheim is like- being in a Disney film. If ever there was a true impresario- then Sondheim was one for all time. Not just of now, or then, but forever. ❤️ (1930-2021)
The reason I like Sondheim and find him unique is because despite dissonant sounds, it doesn't sound atonal. Unlike the modernist music that defined the classical genre in the 20th century, he utilises the best of 20th century classical motifs and techniques without atonality. His sound is also unique from a lot of 20th century musicals because of his distinct emphasis on music over lyrics - you can hear how his songs are different from a lot of other big names in theatre.
Sondheim was a PRECISE and exacting lyricist. I'm not sure what you mean by "his distinct emphasis on music over lyrics", but I can assure you that this was in no way his emphasis. You only need to look at his two massive volumes on lyric writing ("Finishing The Hat" and "Look, I Made A Hat") to know this.
@@EntertainTheElk I was surprised to see a video about Sondheim, but based on this quality, PLEASE go "off brand" for the channel any time you want! You're clearly capable to speak on any topic in art and entertainment. The editing on this blew me away.
I'm not very familiar with Sondheim's musicals, but the whole point of taking an auditory step back from dissonant sounds really reminded me of how System of a Down construct songs
This musical is my all time favorite. Each time I see or listen to it I notice something different. The layers and layers of musical motifs, lyrics, and harmonies are truly a treasure trove for deeper analysis
This might be one of your most artistic videos yet. Really cool! Even though I'm a music nerd, I had never seen or heard of a musical that was made this way.
Thank you for your insight! I'm doing a lecture for my local opera company, mentioning "Sunday" from Sunday in the Park, and this gave me some great information!
Makes a video about Stephen Sondheim. Mentions his D&D podcast in the outro and the description. Is Entertain The Elk a fan of Dimension 20? Stephen Sondheim is an important bard NPC in their magical New York campaign, The Unsleeping City.
@@EntertainTheElk Dimension 20 is an absolute delight! The DM is incredible and the players are the funniest. They have different themes each season. There's a fantasy hight school season and The Unsleeping City is basically what if NYC but secretly fantasy. And the miniature work is simply amazing.
Thank you for introducing me to this wonderful composer. I would have never found him if I wasn’t trying to learn about writing musicals and your video coming up. I just love the music and the musical it’s self.
This was awesome. Thank you. I wish more people knew about sondheim and his great works. I also wish disney hadn't touched into the woods, as they seem to have missed the point.
Great choice of song. You did an excellent job articulating the ways in which Sondheim was trying to match music to art, and there isn't a piece in the show that achieves those goals more perfectly than "Color and Light".
@@EntertainTheElk Oh I already clicked that bell. Imma subscriber. Happy you're trying different stuff, but I'll watch it anyhow. Normal movies and TV stuff, or happy for the artworld dive too. It's your take that your subscribers are here for. 👍
Fantastic video! It reminded me of another piece of content about Sondheim that talked about Sweeney Todd specifically, and how he uses and distorts a very specific sequence in almost every piece within the musical to convey tone and emotion efficiently.
@@EntertainTheElk I'll admit I haven't actually seen most of them, really just things with a film adaptation, but I'm a big fan of the music Sweeney Todd, but find Into the Woods unlistenable. Obviously, other people enjoy it, but the dissonance and repetition just irritate me.

Stop calling them gods with capital G!
just wrote on this painting for my degree research, love how you used the painting as a means to tell the story of Sondheim's musical process
Oh wow that's awesome. It's a beautiful painting to dissect so I'm sure you enjoyed that.
It's so interesting

I love this painting. Never knew there was a musical about it. I'll look for it.

Pointillism applied to music made me think of ‘Supertramp’.
Ooh explain!
@@EntertainTheElk Most of their music has a distinctive staccato keyboard playing style, the most obvious example probably being ‘Dreamer’.

Man, 'Sweeney Todd' is such a superb work of imaginative power and sheer fun; it'll always be Sondheim's creation to me, not Tim Burton.
