Longtime viewer of the channel here (was watching your videos all through the pandemic) and I genuinely believe Arcane would be a show that you would find incredibly good and affecting.
Having seen all the DCAU films and liking them but also never really 'connecting' with them in a deeply impactful or emotional way, Arcane shows you that animation really can be so much more. After the finale my roommate and I just sat in silence for around 5 minutes and watched the credits roll. I don't think I've done that for any media I've seen in recent years (maybe not since Breaking Bad)
I think it'd be a great candidate for your casual watch style compilation videos- it's nine eps so would be an endeavor similar to Squid Game but with S2 coming out soon I think it's worth it and would get decent viewership
Just so you guys know, Alfred isn’t just a family Butler. In his youth he was a member of her Majesty’s SAS. He has been in hot zones all over southeast Asia and the Middle East He is trained in combat medicine, close quarters fighting, weapons, explosives, and of course holds several trophies he earned while boxing in the army.
If I’m right that’s “new” (like last 15ish years) on Alfred origins which was introduced in barman earth one story with him training Bruce.
@@dungeonmaster16 depends your continuity, Alfred’s military history in the comics goes all way back in the 1950s. Before that he was kind of a bodyguard, ex boxer. In fact, in the really old days he had more in common with “Happy” Hogan than he does with is most modern interpretations.
Even BTAS Batman references Alfred military history. It’s also briefly reference to in the Adam West series. But depending on the era and the year of the comics. Alfred has served under the SAS, the Royal Navy, even the regular army. Back in the 70s and into the 90s Alfred with a lot like the character of Dr. Mallard from NCIS.
Dude is a one man army
Damn. Alfred was Batman before Batman was Batman.
@@1Atlkid More like Alfred was more James Bond before it was cool.
If Jen likes Nightwing, you guys should watch Young Justice. He plays the first season's Robin, and then goes on to becomes Nightwing and lead "The team".
Stay whelmed.
Yes bruh that is easily my favorite rendition of dick grayson, they did him so whelmed
It’d be nice to seem them react to Young Justice someday, one of the most underrated comic book series
@@worstprofile Is it underrated? Pretty sure they stopped at season 2 and the community rallied together and got a season 3 made. Pretty sure it's beloved amongst the fans.
@@Saimeren Even managed to get season 4 as well. What i meant was that, in my opinion, Young Justice gets overshadowed by a lot of other comic books series like X-Men, Batman, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Teen Titans, Spiderman, etc, I don’t hear too many people talk about YJ enough. Who knows, if there ever will be a season 5
And the Titans TV series. Dick Grayson is one of my favourite characters and the actor in that was perfect casting.
The Court of Owls are only 10-15 years old but they made a significant impact as major villains in Batman's rogue galleries. In the comics, Batman was actually trapped in a labyrinth made the Court for weeks under the city and he would periodically be hunted by a Talon. The mech and "get the hell out of my cave line!" were ripped from the comic
Conroy played bruces dad in this one. For that 3 second scene
He also did it in the Arkham games, I think he played Thomas Wayne a number of times in general.
I bet Jen would like Red Hood
Yeah Under the Red Hood is really good
Not gonna lie, when Bruce and Damien bond over Dickens and decide to watch a movie together, that is easily my favorite moment between the two. It's so bloody normal and sweet!
I always forget that The Dollmaker was voiced by Weird Al.
whoa, i didnt know that !
Seriously? haha I didn't know that
I recommend the Under the Red Hood movie. It's one of the best movies adapting a batman' story. Keep in kind that it isn't a part of this cinematic timeline.
"Family is not sending a kid into the wild on his own"
*Laughs in Pokémon*
Kevin Conroy voicing Thomas Wayne in the flashback scene made me so happy watching this the first time
Fun fact: Nightwing's rear end is so glorious, Batman can identify it effortlessly when faces are obscured, and each cheek has its own name. The right one I believe, is named Jim. Left is Juan. Also, Nightwing is best boy, always. He's so cool even Superman's son views Nightwing as his hero. Imagine that, son of the most powerful and well loved hero, and you choose a regular dude as your own hero. He's so coooool!
It’s nice to see that after all this time Jen’s Sith Lord tendencies remain strong.
Holden, I can’t recommend enough the Grant Morrison Batman and Robin comic run. In this run, Bruce is dead and Dick becomes Batman with Damien as his Robin. It is literally one of my favorite Batman and Robin dynamics and has a great story. It’s also really fun to see Batman acting more lighthearted with Robin being the dark one (though in Damien’s case he is just a little psycho). Dick and Damien’s relationship has incredible growth as well and becomes one of the best partnerships in DC in my opinion.
There's an animated movie based on that run that's in this universe
@@K1ng1995 what really? Which one? I don’t know how I missed that.
@@Etticos. I think it's the next Batman-centric film which might just be next, I don't remember the release order or the timeline that well. I can't wait for JL Dark because it has my favorite comic book character of all time, Swamp Thing in it.
@@Etticos. I'm assuming it is Batman: Bad Blood
Love that Jen is a Nightwing stan, he’s one of my top three favorite DC characters
It’s interesting to see Bruce have to be a dad to Damien but he’s already raised Dick & Jason & other robins before Damien lol jsut interesting to see how he treats em all differently
I think in the dcau Bruce only raised dick then just went to Damian so no Jason and no Tim
Well in this universe. Jason and Tim don't exist, it's just Nightwing and Damien
@@K1ng1995 I think Jason does exist but he's already had his encounter with The Crowbar.
@@parker469a not in this universe
Batman Under the Red Hood
BATMAN UNDER THE RED HOOD is the Batman animated movie that needs to be seen!
I'm so happen Jen likes Nightwing, he's my favorite DC character. I'm so excited for you guys to see Justice League vs Teen Titans, which is my favorite. And I would love for you guys to react to The Lego Batman Movie, its absolutely hilarious and a great family film imo.
JL vs TT is a great movie! I'm not sure I have a favorite honestly. Their all so good
@lasher5520 I just enjoy the Teen Titans in anything, lol. TITANS, not so much, but it's an okay show imo.
I'm with you. Haha! I even like the TT movie that has both generations of titans. How ever... I do like Titans season 1. But I'm honestly having a hard time finishing the show
@lasher5520 I stopped watching St. S4 episode 5 or something. It just kept getting boring, and Tim Drake was absolutely useless.
That's about where I quit too. And it sucks. I like the actors that play Dick, and Raven very much. I like the Robin suit too. I also wish this animation team would of made a Night Wing movie. And Batman Beyond. Both characters deserve a animated movie. And I think this team would have done well with them
People are way to hard on Damian, considering how he was raised and by who he was raised, of course he’s going to be full off himself, i mean come on if you were 10 years old and was trained to be an assassin since probably 5 years old and on top of that you know you can whoop most peoples asses wouldn’t you be arrogant and full of yourself ? 😂🤣and on top of that he has a really high IQ for a literal 10 year old, not only can he whoop your ass but he’s also smarter than you. Like bro if u had those traits, than yeah I’d be arrogant too lmao
Nightwing can’t fit in that small little Robin costume wtf. Of course Damian is the new Robin in this series 😂
Damian has a pretty good character arc in the DCAMU.
9:40 Alfred: “it’s Batman, he’s burst 2 blood vessel’s” Dick: “Dammit!!”
Batman Forever 1995
Riddler speaking to Two-Face after Batman comes in through the skylight "Your entrance was good; his was better. The difference....SHOWMANSHIP!" Always a great line. lol.
“We out of fucking road” gets me every time
Damian is my favorite robin because of his flaws and how hard he has to fight through the way he was raised. Love the growth of the character.
I'm really glad you're checking these out because we're going to get these stories on the big screen pretty soon!
- James Gunn's Batman film will be Batman finding out about Damien Wayne
- Pattinson and Matt Reeves have both said Court of Owls is something they want to do in their Batman universe which would be perfect for a grounded universe
The dollmaker is such a tragic villain. He was abused as a kid so as an adult, he tries to protect kids by making them into dolls that can defend themselves. This movie focuses alot on how upbringing can define you as an adult. We have the Dollmaker’s, Bruce’s, Talon’s, and even Dick’s past shown or inferred in a way that is meant for us to further understand Damian and also understand Bruce’s fears. Bruce mentions how Damien’s upbringing differs from Dick’s in a way that makes it harder for both Bruce and Damien to learn how to interact with each other. Dick had parents who actually loved him whereas Damien was treated as a tool and raised from practically infancy to be a ninja and to eventually become the head of the league of shadows, he’s never known true parental love and affection or been allowed to have a childhood.
You guys gotta do Batman Under the Red hood !!!
Thanks Ekster for allowing the Hardman family to eat this week!
Watching these series of videos and seeing Damiens development. This series made Damien my favorite Robin.
A cameo from one of the dogs is always going to be worth a thumbs up.
The dollmakers is such a tragic villain. He was abused as a kid so as an adult, he tries to protect kids by making them into dolls that can defend themselves.
I really love the Robin Wars storyline it would be so fun to see that actually get made
I liked that too but I loved the Robins mini-series, with the five Robins.
The drop in quality is noticeable, but by no means a deal breaker. If anything, the dead pixels from before were more of a distraction! lol Glad to hear you're getting it fixed, though.
The more important part is that we're still getting some Holden & Jen content!
It's odd that they went straight from Nightwing to Damien. The two Robins in between never existed in the DCAMU, and those two are very important for Bruce's journey. If you know, you know. Anyway, I'm very glad that you two like these movies, DC always shines brighter in it's animation. Also, I strongly recommend watching the first two seasons of Young Justice (S3 and S4 aren't as good) It's not connected to any other universe and is 100% its own thing so no homework is necessary.
16:59 Nightwing looked his best in the mid to late 90’s in the comics.
I would say the current Nightwing series is the best he’s ever been (other when the character first started in New Teen Titans).
Surprised Holden got that wrong. Dick didn't just grow up and want to be his own hero, there was a whole thing where he left because he thought Bruce was too violent and too brutal. They didn't even talk for some time because he was done with Bruce. Maybe he's not wrong and there's some version out there where that happened.
For Jen to understand green lantern you guys can watch Green Lantern First Flight and GL Emerald Knight's
LOL JEN FANGIRLING OVER NIGHTWING!
Not sure if this was mentioned or not but Talon is actually the paternal great grandfather of Dick Grayson (Nightwing)
The best DCAMU movie for me --- Flashpoint Paradox, other than that I loved movies before - Under the Red Hood, Justice League Doom, Mask of Phantasm, The Dark Knight Part 1 &2. all of them were classic and far better.
Scott Snyder’s Black Mirror run on Batman is some of my favorite stuff I’ve ever read, that’s where I really kinda fell in love with Damian Wayne.
In that book Dick has taken over the roll of Batman with Damian as his Robin, and they flip the dynamic where Batman is the quippy, lighthearted one and Robin is the angry and brooding one.
Wish it would have lasted much longer than it did.
Yes! In my opinion, Scott is the good Snyder when it comes to DC.
Holden I think it's time to show Jen Under the Red Hood. She wants to learn the story of the previous Robin's, sadly the animated series won't be included for Dick Grayson's story.
The comics storyline of Court of Owls was a lot of fun. Though, Nightwing had a more poignant element in that storyline.
Kevinnnnnnn Conroyyyyyy
Shout-out to Kevin Conroy cameo voicing Thomas Wayne
They don't say it here but nightwing is related to the court of owls that's kinda why him and talon look alike
Expected him to recognize Kevin Conroy's voice lol
What is funny is Damian literally had a ''wandering alone to find himself''arc recently in the comics too, though to be fair the circumstances under that case are very different,
9:59 ~ Holden voicing Anakin & Jen as Palpatine
Bruce in comics is actually really good father. Most of the time, there are writers who make him a psycho on purpose and DC editorial has been really bad in keeping their characters in character since N52 relaunch in 2000s. Jason is an edge boy who wants to prove everyone wrong and Damian thinks he knows best, that is why there is a friction there. But he has wonderful relationships with Dick and Tim. Dick went trough tragedy like Bruce did and he helped him get trough it without becoming a brooding obsessive like he is and with Tim he had enough experience parenting that he supported him when needed and let him go his own way when he wanted to try. Tim Drake is only Robin to not change his name when he graduated from side kick category, he just modified it to Red Robin to show that Batman and Robin team did not dissolve. Bruce himself said that Dick Grayson is more physically capable than him, making up in speed and agility what Bruce has in strength and Tim Drake is the next World´s Greatest Detective. That is why Damian is so nasty to Tim, he sees him as a rival, not simply an older adoptive brother like Dick. He cuts his line when swinging trough city and undermines his crime fighting and Teen Titans team. Sadly the movies skipped Tim Drake completely. Just like they skipped Cassandra Cain.
I've read the Court of Owls storyline, it's a really good mystery tale. This movie takes some elements from that storyline so it isn't a 1:1. I thought this movie was alright, it isn't one of my favorites
2:01 Honestly can't wait for you to show Jen Dragon Ball Z. Its pure fun and i hope you stick with the original Dub faulconer version when you do.
I know Jen will love Gohan and Vegeta at some point
There were so many voice actors from Skyrim in this movie that I half expected there to be a scene in which a dude tells Batman: "Hey you! Finally awake! You were trying to cross the border, right?" 😂 😂
Definitely check out Batman and TMNT movie! The fight scenes are really cool!
Weird fact 4:57 the doll maker is voiced by “Weird Al” Yankovic know really his name is even in the credits. 8:12 also Thomas Wayne is voiced by the greatest Batman voice actor ever Kevin Conroy himself.
I like this sequel better than "Son of Batman".
I'm glad that you are watching the DCAMU first before the DCAU. The DCAU is more than a step above with deeper character development and story lines even though it is more family oriented - because there is so much more to watch.
Just to add to the mix - The DC Universe Animated Original Movies (DCAOM) contains 17 movies before the DCAMU run and some after. For the most part, the DCAOM are stand alone movies with adult themes. Some really great movies in that mix.
Hope you guys explore something of the non connected animated films like Under The Red Hood, Green Lantern & All Star Superman DC has some real gems here.
Just so u know in the flash back of Bruce’s father and mother talking to him the guy who voices his father is Kevin conroy
This one is also eh imho similar to throne of Atlantis with how much they changed things especially the owls.
Court of owls was in vol.1 of new 52 Batman run with Batman and family dealing with them and their long history in Gotham. The new mayor the owls appointed is later revealed Bruce supposedly dead brother Thomas Jr. In end his brother took the talon serum and was a custom owl combat suit which in end irs Batman vs owlman.
I'm so glad that you enjoyed this one. I love the Batman trilogy from the DCAMU. Not just because you see Damien's growth, but the characterisations of Batman, Alfred and Nightwing are so well done. Alfred is just classic Alfred, while you can see Nightwing's respect for Bruce in all three of these movies.
The voice acting is superb as well and I think Jason O Mara did a great Batman for the DCAMU.
For this movie specifically, the choreography is excellent. I also thought the story with the Court of Owls was condensed very well in this one. In the end it felt like a proper action movie experience. It had a cold open, then a proper buildup and a badass climatic fight at the Wayne Manor. I agree with Jen Talon was an interesting villain. He's basically Bruce if Bruce had taken the easy way out, fighting crime using any means. I love these archetypes and think they make for the best villains. All in all I find this movie better each time I revisit it. It juggled so many plot elements such as Damien's growing distance from his father and the conspiracy revolving the underground Court, without ever feeling messy.
In terms of the comics it probably does the best in terms of having a bit over an hour to cover the material. Of course in the comics you get way more build up over several months of Bruce coming to realize that the Court of Owls infests every bit of Gotham. It felt really intense that way. Plus you had all these tie-ins of the Court just demolishing Batman and all of his associates including Batgirl and Tim Drake Robin too. So that's really what is missing from this. That said, still love this movie.
7:40 but foggy on this but if I remember right him and Bruce got into a huge argument where dick is like screw this and just left to make name for himself. Years past and he formed the teen titans, then years past again and he comes back calling himself as nightwing with him watching over a small city called bludhaven which isn’t that far from Gotham. If remember The Batman movie near end when Bruce and Selina went different ways Selina is heading towards Bludhaven.
Damn! Holdens review at the end there gave me a whole new insight on my life! 😅
There is a Nightwing fan series that you should watch. Titans live action might be something to look at too if you want more of Dick Grayson as Robin and Nightwing.
Yes! Brenton Thwaites is perfect casting as Dick.
I like it when Jen goes into Palpatine mode. 🤣 "DO IT" 😂
Oo its the Talon Buster suit. The Vivian to Tony's veronica😂
Why would Jen think that the George Clooney movies would have anything to do with the animated stuff you've been watching? I don't get her some times.
It's close to the Court of Owls story, but like most of the DCAMU films, they loosely adapt the story, and make it more New 52-ish (Does help that this story was set in that era... The later films don't quite work with it)
Also, Weird Al Yankovic showing how great a of a voice actor he is again with Toymaker.
Just for Jen's sake, even though its not part, you should react to Green Lantern First Light so that she gets a better understanding of the Green Lantern Corps
6:13 they’re in the field he has to use his code name
For a while I wasn’t aware all these movies were connected, so I skipped some initially. I was just reminded that Batman Bad Blood is next. That’s gonna be interesting.
19:22, Robin's growing on me
me: so is fungus, doesn't mean it's a good thing.
I loved this one. Anytime I get to see Batman and Knightwing work together it's a joy. Also, did you know Weird Al Yankovich was the voice of the Doll Maker at the beginning.
Damian needs a kick in the but
That’s been most of his life, that’s why he’s like he is
“Wish Bruce put his foot down and said no,” he was doing that the whole movie which lead to Robin trusting him less and causing problems in this movie
I get it but these things did happen in the movie lol
Batman and Robin has a dedicated fanbase
Love the court owls storyline from the new 52!
2:46 damn, laughing the pain away 😅
There are a few dc movies that i recomend Batman: Bad Blood ,Justice League Dark, The Death of Superman, Reign of the Supermen and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War being the final part in this dc animated universe there are a few others but imo they are so so. Hope you have fun watching more of the dc animated films
BATMAN VS ROBIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To my best knowledge in most versions first Robin gets disappointed in Batman in some way or another
The Court of Owls story is never done justice. But this is a neat movie.
Batman: Bad Blood is a direct sequel to this. Then you might want to dip back into the Justice league moves.
“Forget what I said in the intro!” 🤣
To let ya know holden Bruce's dad Thomas Wayne there was voiced by Kevin Conroy
Damien is a great character, maybe one of my top 3 favorite DC heroes. He's also pretty great in the comic books (well ones that didn't reverse michael jackson him).
You guys should check out Justice League Dark. Get some Constantine, Etrigan, Deadman and Zatana in your life.
Justice League vs Teen Titans is also really good.
I loved this movie. After the Arkham series, this movie made me get more into Batman.
14:07 for sure he is, he even saved him. also batman struggling is also what happened in the comics. think about it, he’s been this cities protector for years and he finds out there’s been some crazy corporation under your nose and city controlling things the whole time and longer than you been alive. it skews his mind and his parenting in this movie but in the comics it had him super stressed
That owl guy was actually fighting like an owl😅 body movement
There's a more in-depth interpretation of the Court of Owls storyline in the television series GOTHAM...
Got to finish this one before the new upload. But looking forward to you guys going through all these films. Hopefully the elseworld films interest you as well. They're great too.
I would love to see Jen watch Btas and Batman beyond just to get to justice league unlimited
I can’t wait for yall to get to the next movie Batman bad blood, definitely one of my favorite movies in the dcamu
It's almost like Bruce has deep-seated psychological issues that he refuses to deal with in a healthy way. Even though he's had a father figure in Alfred this whole time, he's been too fixated on what he's lost to understand that, or how to be a father himself. He thinks he knows how to be a mentor, so that's what he tries to do with Damien, but he's not even particularly good at that. When Dick was Robin he idolized Batman, but eventually he realized that despite his enduring respect for Bruce, he never wanted to become him. That's why Dick left and became Nightwing.
Happy you guys like these because I personally don’t like these nearly as much as the older DC animated movies so I think you guys have plenty of great movies to watch ahead of you. Mostly everything pre Flashpoint is fantastic. Green Lantern Emerald Knights and Batman Harley Quinn are the two I’d avoid.
I sometimes call this amu the Batman amu because the guys in a lot of movies this universe.
Watch Batman Harlequin for more Nightwing then you could ever imagine.
Naughty nightwing as well
Talon did look like nightwing there. I was like whoa nightwing I know you're a player but not you're dad and friends girl
Funnily nightwing did have a long storyline about court of owls in comic grayson and nightwing rebirth with his sort of master
Definitely disagree about Damien needing a kick in the butt. Damien’s upbringing was already really strict and clinical. I think what Damien needed was more moments of bonding with Bruce outside of crime fighting. Time where he’s encouraged/ taught to be a kid, which is what he was missing growing up
Damian's ego about being the 'blood son' comes from high insecurity and actually admiration for batman, tho he may refuse to admit it
