Our student this week applied early to medical school, but it took almost 3 months for her application to get processed. Then based on her late MCAT score, she withdrew her app from some medical schools where she felt like she didn't have a chance.
Looking at her grades, she's got a 3.48 cumulative GPA with an upward trend-but some Cs in physics and biochem as a senior took away from that trend a bit.
In reviewing her AMCAS app, I discuss:
• Why some medical schools really want veterans and may accept them with lower stats.
• Why it was a huge mistake for her to withdraw her applications based on a lower MCAT score.
• What she did right in her activity descriptions that a lot of med school applicants mess up.
• Does it count as medical/clinical experience to be a BLS instructor?
• Do you need to indent paragraphs in your activity descriptions?
• Some confusing mistakes she made with calculating hours for her activities.
• What you should focus on with your "most meaningful" activity description.
• Why I recommend avoiding activity descriptions that might be uncomfortable for people to picture and think about.
• What she did right and wrong in her personal statement.
• Why I don't recommend writing about shadowing experiences in your personal statement.
• Why focusing on certain kinds of healthcare disparities can be a distraction in a personal statement.

tl;dr She should have kept her app in the pile. Got a 505 and she is military. She's also had a decent GPA and had a 4 hour commute to classes. Never tell yourself no!
I just want to say HUGE props for answering the title question in the first line. So often, videos will have clickbait titles with the answer hidden really deep in the video, but you answered it right away. Awesome job!

I wouldn't say bs...she probably wasn't sure how to translate her hours since military enlisted members do have crazy hours.
I am so appreciative of these videos. I am still a year or two out yet before I apply, but these videos are such an inspiration.

To save you a quick 5 minutes: Her BIG mistake was withdrawing from applying to med school because she had a 505 on the MCAT.
Its like playing a video game, only to put down the controller and give up right before you face the final boss. smh. Her statements on her volunteering and military experiences are great too.

I’m so upset for her that the military took 3 months to get her transcripts done. That’s just awful! I bet that’s a big part of the anxiety of why she withdrew. When I got out of the military, I got into University of Texas with a super low ACT and 1 year of community college. And out of state. Not the same as med school, but I definitely felt like my military experience helped me get in. Not to mention I had experience in my chosen field, through the military.
Anyway, would love to know if she has since re-applied and gotten in.
17:20 Dr Grey says there are 4500 hours in a year. But 24 x 365 = 8760. With this in mind, 12,000 hours in 4 years seems doable if you're working lots of overtime. But some of those hours look like they've been double-dipped with the 20,000 hour job.
Finally! A military applicant! Great video! I am applying for this upcoming cycle and would love to know the best way to find those schools that give preference to Vets. Any good resources?

Those hours could be legit especially for enlisted members which ex-Air Force officer probably aren't aware. From what it looks like she was FMF HM, and they can easily rack up those hours working 24-hour field ops weeks at a time and being on-call at the hospital
she totally had a shot to get in!
Finally, a vet application! Got a subscription from me! haha. Would love to hear more about the resources that you use to identify the schools that give preference to veterans. From what I've been able to see on SDN and reddit, people are usually bashing vets and not giving them helpful advice.
I watching most of your video. As a high school student, I'm scared to study for four years and end up not getting into med school like many people.
@C B What will be a career major that allows you to prepare for your MCAT and clinical hour needed for med school?
@@mathewjames684 Dont listen to C B. Go with a career path that you actually enjoy and see yourself in if you dont get into med school. If you still want to be in healthcare but you dont get into med school or you changed your mind about it because of the length and rigor, try go for CRNA, or PA.. The bio degree can be leveraged and you will be able to get an accelerated nursing degree if CRNA is the route.
If you have a 2nd back up with a really strong interest in it, such as engineering or business, then I'd say yes do it. But dont major in if you dont have interest in that type of work because you might do poorly or just not enjoy it.
@C B The problem is there are people going for medical school and the biology major includes the courses for medical school admissions as well as MCAT subjects. I dont know what youre talking about but have you read my reply? I literally said dont go back to doing something you dont like. I dont want to be an engineer. Why would I get an engineering degree? I dont know where you got the correlation for biology and being bad at math so your point = invalid. If youre not going for STEM major dont go to college.
@C B This is why you have to know whether you want to go into healthcare at the beginning or a few semesters in. Idk what the hell you're talking about but I go to CUNY. Luxury of cheap tuition. I dont get the purpose of going to expensive out of state colleges for an arts degree. How about you read my reply next time instead of having a stick up your ass.

These are not "weird" hours, this is embellishment!
Eh. 12 hour days, 5 days a week gets close to that 12k for 4 years. An ex-officer might not recognize that enlisted work those kinds of hours though.
It's less officer vs enlisted and more just put 8 hours a day. Same with Mormon missions, peace corps, etc. At some point it gets crazy stupid with hours. It is clear to most that military = 24/7/365
