  • Our applicant this week got one medical school interview-but he likely could have gotten more with the same stats. Watch to see what I think he could have done better!

Our student this week applied to medical school with a solid GPA of 3.63 with an upward trend. He was a bit worried about his MCAT CARS score of 124, but personally I don't think that's what held him back the most.
Watch and listen as we dig into the details of how to really show impact and convey who you are in your activity descriptions. We also discuss a very common mistake he made in building his school list!

I really appreciate these people getting their applications roasted on interview so we can learn from their mistakes.

It takes courage to put your app in front of the world like this.

I wrote this somewhere else, but here's a key point about the activities descriptions:
Even if you go clean a bathroom, you can describe it as a meaningful story. What were you going through as you were going to clean the bathroom? Did you have to do it because you wanted to or because you were told to? How long ago did you clean it? The point of these sections is to see your motivation - are you about giving care to patients or do you just want to slap an MD to your name?

The most annoying thing about the process is that if you like anything else, your motivation is called into question. “Oh, you like research? Why don’t you be a researcher! Oh, you like cooking in your spare time? Why not be a chef? Oh, you like sports? Why not be an athlete?” It’s incredibly stupid.

It may feel like that, but it's not. Where it becomes a problem is if someone has ALL research and no clinical yet says they want to be a physician.

Having gone through the cycle myself, my experience was that storytelling was the #1 most important intangible on someone's application-great advice.

Should you show and not tell? Like should i not elaborate on the stories like closing the written portion with this is what i learnd and what it taught me etc.? and let them make ideas from the story i wrote?

What is the difference between what you're supposed to put in the basic descriptions vs the most meaningful experience since they are disjointed? I know you have to tell a story and not a job description but do you then tell two stories? Can you make it continuous?

It’s crazy that premeds need to become actors and harness the dramaturgical approach so hard just to become a doctor

@Mia Winchester meanwhile, every single other professional career, and position, is the complete opposite of this BS we have to do.

It's really not. It's just being yourself, but learning how to tell your story.

Dr. Gray, I wasn't able to do many activities before as I had strict parents that didn't want me to do things outside of college. Should I focus on getting research experience or look for activities to do to talk about on my application since I'm applying next year? I'll most likely only be able to do one of the above since covid made it more difficult to do as much. Any advice you could give would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Sorry about your parents' feelings. I think there are some online opportunities you might be able to do because of COVID. I've done online shadowing, and I've heard that there is online scribing too.

Talk to your premed advisor to find out opportunities near you. Clinical experiences are very important to first answer the question why medicine. What if you try a clinical experience and realize you don’t like interacting with sick people. Nothing is wrong with that but medicine might not be a career for you.

    Huge question about clinical experience
Does it matter if you have 2, 3, or 4 experiences of clinical experience experience each at say 200-300 hrs compared to 1-2 experiences that are 1000+ ? Or maybe 1 experience that is 2000+??
Would you say one lacks clinical experiences if they just have one clinical activity but the hours are very high?

How the hell do you stand out and not sound so generic when your experience isn't unique?

Hi Dr. Gray, I’m having hard time writing a story for every single experience just because I am worried that it will not seem genuine to read 15 different stories. I do not want to write job description either. What other options are there other than story telling / job description? Thank you so much for all these videos and for your time :)

Did he mean first generation college student or first of his family to go into medicine? Because the former would explain the lack of resources and knowledge, the latter would not. So many applicants don't have physician parents.

Tbh I really thought his descriptions were decent, it seems like just the complete lack of clinical experience and the negative part in his PS limited him
