In boats, teak deck caulking is done in the same way. If you want to smear it down, you have to tape the edges of the line. Wooden deck can be sanded to clean. If the deck joint is deep, sometimes we put a string the bottom of the joint so that the sealant is not consumed as much and the joint is more flexible when the sealant is not attached to the bottom. It’s a fitting tribute to your hard work, Matt. You do so much for us out here watching in Deviceland; it’s about time that you got to fulfil your dream 🙂
I know you said you were going to do sprayfoam in the ceiling but I hope you are also doing it on the walls, especially since they didn't tape the house wrap when they put it on. The sprayfoam will provide a more ridged structure and seal up any air leaks. Even if you just do 1 inch thick and then do the rest in something else. either way, looking awesome.
Your kind of blew my mind that they didn't tape the seams of the house wrap. Even the companies who make the house wrap will tell you it's not even worth putting it on if you're not going to tape the seams
@@masterbates7016 I would still say it is worth it, creates a huge amount of wind block. They use to put tar paper on without taping back in the day, and the difference between that and no tarpaper would always be pretty big. But yes, huge draft spot without that taping and fiberglass's ability to insulate dramatically drops when it isn't sealed on both sides.
For sealing the gaps you can use the paper tape. You stick it on the sides of the cut. Not right on the line of the cut, but leaving a small distance from the cut. Then you put a sealant, smear it (the excesses of sealant will go on the tape), and remove the tape right away. Thus you'll push the sealant deeper and have a really nice, smooth line. We were doing it to seal different gaps on the aircraft.

Well done Matt, another milestone completed. We should also congratulate the lads and lasses who did a wonderful job with the concrete and wall and doors. I am look forward to seeing the completed interior.
@ 11:20 yes the outside concrete will have “air” in it because it’s exposed to the elements and will expand and contract more compared to inside the shop. That’s why garage floors are more prone to cracking. - From an ex mixer driver.
I really like seeing the WWM on chairs in the porch pour. The way they lifted the header for the garage wall was smart, too. Ordinarily, I like to spec a LWT "loft" space over tracked OHD like that. Would be a pain in your case, probably needing 410 series TJI. Note that you need to plan your lighting scheme around having the doors open, which block roof-mounted fixtures (hence making a cubby over them) Still, cool to see.
That looked like hard work for the team as they poured and smoothed all that concrete, Matt. Congrats on the great progress towards the completion of your big shop.
Bollocks to that method. Get some good masking tape and mask of each side of the expansion cut, allow 3-5 mm gap. Make a tool with a slightly bulging blade attach to broom handle or similar. Gun the sealant into approx 10 metre lights, run the tool down the joint have clean container to hand and put the excess in to it,repeat process approximately 20 more metres then go back to the fist joint and remove tape. Wallah done!
Looking AWESOME, Matt!! SO happy for you! It will be so nice to be able to stay out of the elements now. She's all closed in! Isn't it great when a dream turns into a reality? I'm overjoyed for you!
Hey Matt I just got my new shop built this week too! It's not anywhere near as big as yours (25x30)but it's serving as my dream shop as well. I'm mostly a wood worker but I dabble in automotive and metal machining as well. I'm hoping we have as much fun in our respective shops as it's looking like we will. I enjoy your show and have been watching since you dug Christine out of the bushes. Keep up the good work! Dave
Matt when we do our joints we blast them out with a saw first to get all the debris out then vacuum up the dust (we use the skill saw set up for soft cutting with the roller plate and extended handle) then we roll backer rod into the joint with roller tool that you can adjust the depth on we do 3/8”. That way whatever material your using (we use vulkem) doesn’t get wasted in massive voids and takes far less to do a slab.
With the frigid temperatures and wind lately this could not happen soon enough. The concrete work was excellent and the insulated doors are a must to keep that valuable heat inside the structure. Just getting out of the wind is a huge improvement during construction. Now on to dreaming about future heated floors!!! It is extremely expensive (especially now) to go for the "extras," but as you mentioned it likely would never happen otherwise. Great video and can't wait to see the shop progress to completion. Looking forward to the ultimate episode for the over head crane installation!
Looks awesome !!!! Can’t wait for future episodes. I’ve watched all your videos from the beginning and it’s awesome to see all the progress keep up the good work!
Big change from when you opened bags of concrete and mixed it all on site to pour the church wall. Congratulations! And the video Peg shared from his visit to you was Mint! Love the content and happy for your success.
I used to do a lot of commercial automated gate installations that would require us to cut in a vehicle detection loop for safety and to trigger it to open when you pull up to the inside of the gate. Was basically a 1 inch deep saw cut in the concrete or asphalt shaped like a rectangle that we would wrap some silicone wire in a loop around several times. Then we would use the Sika Self Leveling sealant in either grey or black to seal over the top of it. Worked out pretty good and allowed for some tool work before it set up hard in order to minimize wasted material. But if you got it anywhere other then where you wanted it, especially your cloths, it was there forever.
Fantastic, Matt!!! We've been waiting for this update! This will be quite the operation once finished (but, will it ever really be finished?). You sure picked the right concrete company, they are on the ball! Be well, be safe!
Congratulations Matt on your much anticipated "dream shop". I'm excited for you!! Looking forward to seeing the progress and other "hidden surprises" you are holding back on 😊

Again great work and dedication to all of your accomplishments in building your dream shop. I know you can't wait to start some great projects in your new playground.
We ended up having to wait for spring for the aprons for our dream shop build. Just got way too cold 🥶 Unfortunately concrete prices went way up for this year, so we got screwed on that. Oh well. We kind of changed our mind anyway, and will make the slabs bigger. We had to wait a good long time for our large door, but it is so nice once you have an enclosed space out of the elements!
Congrats to you and your wife with this big step! What an achievement! This would take a lifetime for normal mortal people to get this far, you get this done so much quicker. It's unbelievable!
I dunno who Parker is but they yell at him a lot! So cool to see your shop getting finished up, glad you will have a nice warm space to work in winter now
My first real job back in 83 was on civils building concrete foot bridges in my home town. I was also a skate punk, soon as the job was finished and open I skated those bridges. Looking at your fantastic shop I would have skated it soon as the muck was dry, it looks so smooth but an old skate board would have eased the jointing job you could have sat and squeezed with some tunes blasting. Cheers
What a great job you are doing on this garage. I'm a builder for 45 years and I have to tell you, your garage is coming out mint because you used professionals. A project like this is no place for either DIY (except here and there) or the low bidder. I did concrete work for a summer when I was younger. Whew, that is some heavy work! Your guys were pros, but you knew that. You should seal those floors once they cure up. I can't remember the product I used to use but it was rather expensive. It was a clear liquid that soaks into the concrete like stain does on wood; it does not lay a film on the surface but absorbs into the top of the slab. Once the slab is sealed you won't be able to tell that it's been done. Once it is sealed spills will not absorb and stain the slab. The concrete guys should be able to recommend a good product. I got my sealer at a specialty Concrete/Masonry Tool Supply place which sells everything for concrete work but the actual concrete. It's the place where trade guys buy: subsurface plastic, concrete tools, tie wire, trowels, screeds, bull floats, steel stakes release oil, rebar, mesh, etc., etc. Seal that slab and it will look great for 20 years. Also, you want to keep off the slab (with equipment) for a while, 2 weeks maybe more. Don't put tracked equipment on that slab for at least a couple of months. Concrete takes months to full cure, much longer in cold weather. Lay down some plywood if there is any doubt. Watch the edges in particular; backfill immediately once the forms are removed. Your concrete guys have clued you to all this I'm certain.
Make sure to put in a fire suppression system if I was building a shop that big I would have a fire suppression system that way if you ever have a fire you have a fighting chance of keeping the shop and what’s inside and not lose everything like gentry and son trucking did with the shop fire they just had a little over a week ago Anyway congrats on the new shop I bet you are extremely excited for it!! I know i would be that’s a major accomplishment!!
For later trial. I was taught that when applying a sealant into cracks as in caulking, you push the tube before you and you can see the product go into the gap. When you drag it over the crack, it tends to lay on top more than fall into the crack. Do a trial of push against drag.

Still, cool to see.
That looked like hard work for the team as they poured and smoothed all that concrete, Matt. Congrats on the great progress towards the completion of your big shop.
That concrete slab went down super fast man they are good looking nice and smooth Matt 7:12 @Diesel Creek
Congrats Matt on getting the concrete pad done and all three garage shop doors.. looking like a adventure that turn-out great..
Matt, I love the way you do things, it really amazes me about how much work you go through to make the videos so good
I appreciate that!
Hey Matt
I just got my new shop built this week too!
Awesome! Thank you!
Watching those guys & gal at work is very therapeutic. Great work
Shop is looking good! Can’t wait to see it complete and you working out of it.
Looking forward to seeing the progress and other "hidden surprises" you are holding back on 😊
They really did a beautiful job with finishing the concrete. 4000 PSI. Great 3/13
Awesome Matt- you deserve it!
Thanks a ton!
Seeing the shop finally closed in and the doors up is phenomenal, Matt! Beautiful concrete work. They really show what quality workmanship is all about. I'm so glad to see things coming together for ya! Looking forward to the next step ... Can't wait for the next video!
Matt, just put two strips of sticky tape on sides of the cut - and you can save half of the sealer
Gran trabajo de un mega proyecto, cada etapa agrega una nueva mejora (y lo que todavía falta)
Disfruto ver estos videos tan bien editados👍
Si muy bueno !
What a fantastic video. The professionalism of the concrete workers and the construction company folks is a sight to behold. Congratulations on getting the shop enclosed; I have been eagerly awaiting this video.
Starting at 8:45 it looks like the three guys helping to spray the sealant I working on a movie set. One guys got a sound boom, the other one has the camera, the other one has the recording box and or is operating the trolly. AWESOME teamwork.
Congratulations on your accomplishments, that's a very big milestone you just made happen. Wish the best, your worked hard and earned every bit of it.
Those guys know their shit
Congrats to you and your wife with this big step! What an achievement! This would take a lifetime for normal mortal people to get this far, you get this done so much quicker. It's unbelievable!
Pretty smooth moonwalk while filling the joints in the time lapse.
Very hard work
I dunno who Parker is but they yell at him a lot! So cool to see your shop getting finished up, glad you will have a nice warm space to work in winter now
He’s the newest guy I think 😂🤷🏼♂️
Wisdom is like muscles, you don't get it till after you done what you needed it for.
Make sure to put in a fire suppression system if I was building a shop that big I would have a fire suppression system that way if you ever have a fire you have a fighting chance of keeping the shop and what’s inside and not lose everything like gentry and son trucking did with the shop fire they just had a little over a week ago
Anyway congrats on the new shop I bet you are extremely excited for it!! I know i would be that’s a major accomplishment!!
That's a good looking Shop Matt.
Love the several quick action shots of the same thing. Makes the boring task seem a little more interesting
Man it's nice to see your dreams come true! Have a Great 2023!!!!!
For later trial. I was taught that when applying a sealant into cracks as in caulking, you push the tube before you and you can see the product go into the gap. When you drag it over the crack, it tends to lay on top more than fall into the crack. Do a trial of push against drag.
It’s the cleanest it will ever be but she’s ready to get dirty
