    @sarah Adam: please don’t discourage IMG who want to accomplish their dream. I am one of them and I ended up getting into residency training 6 years ago. My first language is french , I did all my medical training in French in Africa. I learn English by reading book and watching stuffs in English. People told me that I couldn’t make it but I did . To pay my bills while I was preparing for these boards exam, I worked in factories and sometime in Nursing home as Personnal support worker. I agree with you that a lot of IMG don’t get into residency program. But it is better to try and be positive. Now I practise medicine here and I am happy.
    I really appreciate what you are doing Dr Webb keep up with the good job.

    Somewhat true. However , in my hospital in NY, there are a lot of FMGs in our anesthesia program. I am on the commitee that allows residents in and It all depends on the student and their work ethic and board scores.

    How exactly can one get clinical experience as a Non US IMG, say for getting a residency as a Neurosurgeon. Also approximately how many years of clinical experience would be required for having a fair chance of getting a Neurosurgery residency?

    • @DocPrakhar
      @DocPrakhar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well there are 2 types of US clinical experience. One is hands on, which you do before your MBBS internship. You get proper clinical experience in this one. The other is an observership in which you cannot touch a patient, you just shadow a doctor on rounds . Once you do internship the only option is observership . You have to mostly get your usmle step 1 done before USCE. Some programs do allow to without it however. You have to invest 10-15 lakh in this, so I suggest only consider if step one is done and score is good (240) . Typically 6 months to 1 year is good. You can even do a research based one in places like John Hopkins. You will have to take a break between mbbs final year and internship to get the hands on clinical experience, which is helpful for step 2 as well!

    • @DocPrakhar
      @DocPrakhar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      P.s. neurosurgery is well compensated but working hours and emergencies suck. So you might want to reconsider for something more laid back if neuro isn’t your absolute passion

    • @DocPrakhar
      @DocPrakhar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mrinmoy Kundu score better in step 2 CK obviously. Once you pass step 1, that is the next most important criteria. The importance of research is now increased. Also, you should work hard for strong letter of recommendations during clinical experience.

      @Anay345 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-tp5qu7zu2l Get good scores and letters of recommendations from your teachers, write as many research papers you can and publish them in medical journals but keep studying for USMLE and get more than 240 if you want a good surgical residency thats it and its not necessary but US clinical experience looks good on CV. The most important part is research papers and USMLE scores so prepare accordingly.

    Hey Dr. Webb, was wondering if you could make a video on what students should think about when ranking the programs for residency after picking a specialty, especially a surgical specialty.
    Should you go to one with the best reputation? What if you don't like doing research all the time? Should you take into mind if there are any fellows at the program, possibly taking away from the potential cases you'll be able to operate on? If you want to apply for fellowship yourself what are some things you want to keep in mind when selecting a residency?
    I know you made a video before on why you ranked your program first, but was wondering if you could elaborate some more. Thanks, great videos as always and immensely helpful!

    Hi, Dr. Webb. I love your videos, by the way. So I am an American born and raised gal who is a foreign medical graduate (soon). @@lauragarrido4866 Sorry for necroing this thread, buuuut.... If you want to be an MD in the US, your best bet is to follow the path that all doctors follow in the US: Undergrad => MCAT => Medical School => Match (More than 95% chance of matching). There are plenty of scholarships and grants available for US citizens. Otherwise you won't have enough time to study for the boards whilst in Mexico; school here is very, very hard; you will be constantly chasing a high GPA, whilst in the US a LOT of MD schools are P/F, so class rank is nonexistent.
