So unbelievably helpful. Coming back here to say thank you now as a matched applicant. Passing along this free guide that I stumbled upon and was so helpful.
It would be great if you make a video on how to apply to step one .. I mean "the process". Your channel is of great help to people like me who don't have proper guidance and thank you 😁😁.
I'm really liking these videos. Explains the entire process so clearly. I've already been recommending it to people who are just getting started! Looking forward to more! :)
I gonna start medical school soon and I wanna have a plan and a goal before I start. Right now everything is so confusing and seems very overwhelming but I’m learning about all this just to prepare myself and motivate myself to work hard to get there. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much for these videos, they are super helpful! I am starting to prepare for my Step 2 Ck and would like to know when you will be posting a video about it like you did for Step 1 which was super informative
Loved this USMLE journey overview video. Could you kindly make a video on how to make a realistic study schedule for the USMLE Step 1, 2 CK and 3 exams? Appreciate your help!
Thanks for putting the info in a systematic manner. Has made things easier and compact in an otherwise scattered info availability from other sources. So, congrats and thanks. Kindly correct me if I am wrong, in the above video ( USCE section) you stated clerkship and sub internships cannot be taken after Medical school course is complete. My understanding ( till before this video) was that IMGs can undertake what they call 'electives' before completion of medical school. And, clerkships, externships can be undertaken after completion of MBBS. Kindly, also explain what is sub-internship regards
hello doctor challa first of all a hearty congratulations for getting matched in the US as an IMG . my question for you is how a third year indian student studying abroad should pursue everything regarding USMLE ? should USCE be taken before or after graduation ? and most preferably when should one start preparing for USMLE , before or after graduating ? i'd really appreciate your reply , thanks :)
Can i go in this sequence 1 usmle step 1 2 USCE and letter of recommendation 3 graduation from med school 4 step 2 ck and cs 5 step 3 6 matching Coz i want to gain us clinical experience before graduation and give step 2 and 3 after graduation
What of if a student is the first batch of medical students from the university because the university is new but the university name appears in the world directory of medical university but there is no sponsor notes needed for the ecfmg what does this student have to do please?
so Dr, there are some modifications, upgradations, in exam styles, eligibilty, IMG needs in US, etc. can you make new version "What is USMLE?" according to updates please, thanks
If I want to get into a surgery residency what kind of clerkships should I do? Is research compulsory? Also how tough is it for an IMG to get into Surgery residency? I wish to become Cardiothoracic surgeon. So do you think integrated cardiothoracic residency is better or general surgery and then 2 year cardiothoracic residency? I really want to have a clarity regarding this. I only recently found out your channel. Thank u for speaking about IMG residency and step prep in detail. I would really appreciate it if you could make a video on surgery residency or reply to this comment. Thank you very much!
Hey guys! I have a question , i hope someone will answer it : I am already in residency in my Country, 2nd year , is it possible for me to take the USMLE steps if I’m already in training ? I’m not sure I want to practice in my country . thanks !
I have a quick question. You mentioned that clerkships should be done before graduating. So did you mean before graduating the international medical college? How would that be possible though if you are enrolled in your native med school. I graduated in feb 2019 and did internship at my medical school associated hospital for 6 months. Recently gave step 1. So would I be able to do clerkships now? Thank you.
Excellent video, congratulations for starting a channel that will help many of us IMGs. I understand that some specialties are almost impossible for IMGs, internal medicine is friendly, but is the cardiology fellow possible for us?
Great content Dr. Challa. Are there any structures or provisions put in place by the USMLE board to help in visa application and stay in the USA for IMGs to take step 2 CS since it can in only 5 centers in the USA.
Hey, this is a great video. Wanted to ask, how do you know when you're ready to book the slot for Step 1? Will an nbme score help decide or completing a certain % of the course? Don't want to rush booking it but unfortunately, I'm pressed on time as well. Thanks! :)
Sir, what is the time limit to take usmle exams and for certification after applying for ecfmg(if I apply before 2024 to follow current rules)? Please clarify.
Your video is super informative and useful! Can you please tell me whether publications are required for matching? I do know they are necessary for neurosurgery.
I have a question sir, step 1 cost around 1000dollars if we fail it 1st attempt should we repay the step 1 amount again or its valid if we take under 6 months
How are the interviews like? Do the program directors seek them as an opportunity to know about the candidate in general or is another opportunity for them to test your knowledge?
In general, once you get an interview, you have already completed the credentials that the program requires. Therefore, most programs don't test your knowledge. Instead they just try to see how compatible you are with the program. They like to attain a general gist of your personality to see if you would be friendly and work well with others in the program. However, this isn't to say that programs don't ask questions. I've had an interview where the program directory asked me medical questions. But this is rare!
So Step 2 CS is a clinical live-encounter exam. When I say this, I mean that its a practical where there are 12 patients and you have to take the history of these patients and formulate a differential Diagnosis. It isn't a hard test and people spend anywhere from 1 week to 1 month to prepare for this test. You will need to learn certain generic formats to take a history. Every patient encounter will last around 20 minutes and you will have 6-8 minutes to prepare patient notes. There are 5 testing centers mentioned in the video. It is a pass/fail test and you will be graded on 3 different components. Patient encounter, English proficiency and Clinical knowledge. Don't worry about the knowledge, the cases are relatively basic. If you've done Step 1 or Step 2 ck, the knowledge part of the test won't be a problem at all. You'll just take time to learn the format of the test and the format of history taking
You told everything but you did not tell what would an international student do meanwhile everything is being processed..?? Like where to stay, go, work, whom to meet, learn etc. cuz he is on visa and not a resident of the USA..
How much YOG is too much to apply in ophthalmology in US? For ex., is doing a residency in family medicine in Canada (2 years), then doing USMLEs for one year, then applying the next year too much? I Graduated in 2020 in Canada (and lets say I get good USMLE scores)
Nice video I have one question , I'm 47 years old , l graduated 1999 A . D Can I take step 1 and step 2 ck and step 2 cs ? I know I will not be able to match , I want only the certificate to apply for a job in gulf area ?
Thanks for the video! Do rank lists require you to pick top 3 or is there enough slots for every program you interviewed at? And also if you apply for IM do you need an LOR from the Head of the department at your med school in that speciality to be one of your 3 LORs or can you use only LORs from US doctors? Thanks!
You can rank as many programs as you want in your Rank Order List. You are not limited to any number and you can rank all the programs you got an interview from. When it comes to Letters of recommendations, you should have at least 3. It can be from your country or the United States. In the ERAS system, you can submit as many LORs as you'd like. However, when submitting your application to a program, you can submit a maximum of 4 LORs. The LORs can be from any faculty that you have worked closely with. It would be preferable if the LORs you submit are from United States because it holds a lot more credibility in the eyes of the program director. However, you should still try to obtain 1-2 LORs from your head of department and maybe also another faculty just in case you aren't able to get any LORs from American faculty by the time of submission.
Hello Dr Challa!! Post-covid as I read the elective application requirements, many programs now require the home Institute to be vslo enrolled. This wasn't the case in March 2020. Very few medical college in India are vslo enrolled. My clg isn't vslo enrolled. Can u tell how much time does it take to get it enrolled?? AAMC website just says the clg staff must contact vslo team for further info.

Also my husband who is a pediatrician here in Turkey, will also apply with me along the way, do you know anything about the couple match? thank you so much DR. Challa.
Thank you for this video. I have a couple questions: I've finished my residency in India and wish to come to the US now. So I can only do observerships there.. what tips would you give me in this scenario?
Before applying for your ECFMG certificate, your school first needs to be registered in the World Directory of Medical Schools and you will need to have completed USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 CK, USMLE Step 2 CS and your medical school requirements (you must graduate to apply)
Great video sir , can you please tell the timeline for further STEPS and USCE if you take your step 1 in 3rd yr ending ?( Acc. To indian medical student.)

Thank you for the video! Is there some kind of "penalty" to attempting the Match multiple times?
What if we write STEP 3 for the Visa and later you realize the score isn't the best(after matching) can we write it again?
I don't think you can write step 3 again. However, the score in your step 3 isn't necessary. Most people just try to pass Step 3
