Follow-up on this, I had the same thinking, how do you keep things from hitting you if you have to brake hard or so? How the watertank is kept in place and how are other things kept from moving? Very nice ideas!
@@DLightBelgium The rubber materiel we put on top of the plywood prevents all the plastic boxes from moving, even when we had to break hard. Same thing for the water tank, especially since it weights 60kgs when full. The whole thing doesnt move at all !!
I have a 90 series as well, I love your set up, I would do the same thing if I did not have 5 kids haha, I need all 8 seats, so I have done this set up inside a tradesmans trailer 👍🏻
Bro, your setup is really amazing and super functional, you’ve got all you need. I would like to know where did you go to build the parts you didn’t build yourself, like the electricity/water system. Cheers mate!
Kickass for the battery and water pump if I remember correctly, BCF for the water tank, Amazon for the electrical parts and Bunning for the majority of the other parts!
Inspired ideas and layout. Are you able to store the sleeping platform in the vehicle in the 5 seat configuration? And did you have a hot water solution? Nice video, thanks for sharing
Yes we could store the plateform, just on top of the back part of structure (the one where the water tank is). No hot water solution though, we kept it simple
Nice setup ! I’m about to make mine, this one has plenty of nice features. Were does the water tank go when you are in sleep-inside configuration ? I would be interested by some of the measurements of the back door shelves as they look really neat if you don’t mind sharing. Enjoy your trips man !
Thanks for the comment mate ! Unfortunately we sold the car about 2 years ago, when we had to come back to France because of covid situation, so I won't be able to give you measurements of the back shelves. What I can tell you is that the water tank position was not very safe as it wasnt strapped to anything. I would change that by using latches and starps to maintain it. We didnt have the occasion to sleep on the inside plateform after we installed it, we sticked to the roof top tent. I can send you more photos of the shelves if you are interested, just write me your email. See ya !
Hi Julien I love your setup Im from South Africa and I have a 90 kzte and I'm planning to rig mine to. I'm just curious I'm looking for a similar centre console that you have. Mine does not have the extension like yours. Can you give some advise?
Well done mate, nice set up indeed. Just goes to show you don’t need to buy the latest greatest 4x4 off the showroom floor to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoors Australia has to offer - well done buddy ! 👍👍🏕🍺
Thanks a lot for your message buddy ! It was our first overlanding adventure and we were on a budget but we had tons and tons of fun and memories with this Prado 🥰
Hi Julien, amazing set-up! Real cool ideas! I've now loads of inspiration for my upcoming J95 custom build. How/where do you store the storage/sleeping platform and how did you build it to take the load e.g. two adults? Would it have been possible to construct the whole set-up to achieve more clearance to the ceiling (more space when sleeping in the car)?
Hi Jan! Glad you liked our setup :) The sleeping platform is one piece of 15mm plywood + 6 wooden feet to support the weight, really solid for 2 adults. We used to store it on top of the back plateform, where the water tank, table and chairs were stored (the 2 plateform had the same size, we did it on purpose). About the height between the platform and the ceiling, we could have had maybe 10cm more by choosing a smaller fridge, but 40L was the minimum for 2 adults.
Brilliant video, Julien. May I ask a question - what if the battery needs to be changed (the one next to the box in the back of the PRADO?). I guess could it be every 3 years? So, technically, if one is traveling with a brand new battery, it should last?
Hi David ! The auxiliary battery can easily be changed (even if it's super heavy!). The longevity of AGM battery will mainly depends on how you use it : never get lower than 65/70% to make it last the most
Hey mate What is your fuel economy like and have you installed an auxiliary fuel tank? I have a similar Prado and I'm planning a trip across Africa soon ...
Hi Julian, it's been a long time since you post this, how much did you spend altogether to make it an overlander. I got the same car for the last 13 years now I am thinking of drive around Australia
Hi Jay, we sold the car and the whole setup for $17 200 (australian), including the James Baroud rooftop tent, the drawers, 2nd battery, fridge, kitchen stuff, chairs, table, stove, etc...everything !
Julien Sarton oh coz i literally brought the same car and with the same kms buy the have had a new belt already in so i got like 10,000 kms left till the belt so i’m sweet i guess
I think they are the last Toyota cars, with diesel engines, from the year 2021 Toyota no longer manufactures diesel engines, nor mixed ones, switch to electric

Great vid... Carful storing things on that platform under breaking. They might come forward and hit you in the head. Love the water tank trick
Thank God nothing happened :)

Thanks man ! Glad you like our setup :)
Love your work. Love the Prado. Great job with the set up.
Thanks buddy :)
Great video and setup, thanks for sharing! Keen to see it in action 😄
I like the rack on the back door. Great idea...I have seen some like that one on Amazon.

Fantastic build!
Any idea what the fully loaded curb weight is now??
Thanks 👍🏽🤙🏽🍻
Thanks mate ! I could not tell you about the curb weight but I think we didn't get to the GVM
Nice one guys mean set up !
I have a gen 2 Pajero which is pretty similar in size so thank you for the ideas

Awesome 😎
Great video mate. Keep it up. Another sub.

Hi mate,
Nice set up ! Which fitting are you using for the water tank ? Also where did you find the cap for the 1/2 male ?

it looks very nice, but It seems to me that the bed works as a head cutter during a crash accident from a rear. What do you think?
Hi ! You're right, we should have bolted it to the chassis to make the whole platform safer. Fortunately, we had no car accident !
Hi,
Where did you get the console between the front seats, I love the height.
Cheers.
Hey! Can't help you man, it was already in the car when we bought it
Cheers, tired of using pillows on long trips to rest my arm.
Do the tailgate table directly attached? Thru the trim or metal?
Thru the metal of the door. It didnt move at all !

We had a 60L water tank from Repco or SuperCheapAuto, I cant remember. Its not sold anymore though!

Hey mate
What is your fuel economy like and have you installed an auxiliary fuel tank? I have a similar Prado and I'm planning a trip across Africa soon ...
Yes we had 2 fuel tanks, 90 + 65L, for an average of 800kms
It's not KZJ90 (diesel engine, short wheel base) as you wrote in title but VZJ95 (petrol, V6, long wheel base)
You're totally right, I realized it later !
Great setup Julien. What sort of fuel economy do you get out of this thing? Im looking to get a 90 series prado too, seems like a lot of extra weight?
Average 15-16l/100kms on the road, and around 20l/100kms offroad
@@JulienSarton thanks mate. Not too bad!
@@JulienSarton can i also ask is this the 4 speed auto? How do you find highway driving, is the car comfortable over 100kph?

Those boxes on top of the platform will kill you in the event of a roll over !!! Take it from a fire fighter !!! Please strap them down
That is a clever suggestion! We would not have the same setup in our next overland vehicule anyway :)
Casting onto TV .. more ads than video 😢 content
