We did do a review of the tent if you want to have a watch of that. th-cam.com/video/gVxjh5Co6bM/w-d-xo.html but a general summary the tent is great in the wind due to its versatility and ability to have it half down and if really windy dont put the fly up and use the elastic to keep it in place. All,great information, we are in the process of setting our Prado up.. one thing that stood out to me and I do relize this is 3 years ago.. but you had a gas bottle inside.. a big no no from my knowledge? The clothes draws etc we might p8nch those ideas.. cheers
Nice set up. I have a 2006 120 petrol prado and was looking for a long range fuel tank to do the longer treks like CSR. Contacted Brown Davis but they have discontinued, any suggestions?

Firstly have you weighed the old girl?, what sort of L/100 are getting out of the 1kz? , is your roof rack a steel one and have you had any troubles with the mass amount of weight you have on your roof? I'm currently looking into RTT ect and I'm trying to work out how to keep the weight down below the 100kg Prado roof rating. If your steel rims are ballistic ones iv read that its common for them to split like yours have. Enjoy your travels
Hi Tyson, glad you enjoyed the video pologies for the slow response. Yes we have weighed the old girl, we are right on the limit when fully loaded. We did have to leave some things like the fire pit and camp oven behind. Yes the roof rack is steel and we have had no issues but are looking at options to reduce weight. We get about 12.5-14 L/100 depending on the type of driving we are doing. After a third rim cracked we have gone to patrol alloys as don't want to risk one cracking at speed. The floor for the centre shelving bolts down to the existing middle row seat fixings in the floor and has feat on the floor in the footwell to support the weight. The rear is all bolted to the 3rd row existing bolt holes and captive bolts poking through the timber for drawers and fridge slide. This allow it to be turned back into a 5 or 8 seater if we needed. Great video! I'm looking at a similar setup, however I noticed that tent weighs about 100 kg and the awning about 27 kg. Adding another 25ish for the rack and you're up to 150kg on the roof. Do you notice the weight much while driving/off roading? Also what is this roof rack and how much is it rated to? Cheers, W
Glad you enjoyed the video Warren the roof tent rack and awning weight is very heavy we have not been limited or held back by the extra weight on or offroad and have done a lot of off and on road driving over 60,000km. If we did it again we would put the tent on either a ute canopy or trailer as it is not ideal on a wagon. As for roof load the rack on our car is not the limiting factor bolts through the roof but we recomend looking at the vehicle roof limit and using common-sense hope that helps A&J
Yeh this is my dilemma atm, the roof rack load rating is really irrelevant as the vehicle roof load rating is always lower than the actual roof rack…eg..the Prado roof load rating is 100kg, my kings aluminium rack is rated to 150kg but weighs 38kg so technically I can only carry 62kg on it to comply with the 100kg roof load rating….ARBs new Base rack and Front Runner I think have tested theirs so they’re certified so that you don’t need to minus the weight of the rack from the vehicles load capacity, but that’s just on paper BS because there’s nothing different to the way it’s mounted compared to say mine…I just did a Fraser trip with roughly 150kg on top which put me roughly 90kg over when you add the weight of the rack, definitely felt it cornering but I tried my best to drive sensible…looking at an off-road box trailer now to eliminate doing that again as we’re a family of 7😅
I like this video. It shows that you don’t need a brand new 4wd with all the expensive (apart from RTT) gear to get out and explore. Cheers!
