Great video Rob I am 68 years of age and grew up in Ringwood Street Ringwood and went to RingwoodTech I have fond memories of riding my bike around all those areas on this video as a 16-year-old very sorry to hear that daisies hotel has been demolished I spent many hours in my dad‘s car while he was in the public bar and nearly burnt his brand-new Holden to the ground by pushing in the cigarette lighter which didn’t come out lucky he was in the window Area of the pub and saw the smoke ha ha I was only about six years old then

I had no idea of it possibly being looked back at this far into the future but glad I took it. Thanks Rob, a fabulous video. We lived in Merrill Crescent in the 80's. Have forwarded to my children. Sure it will bring back many memories. BTW the Big W was a bit of fun, especially hitting the bottom at a rate of knots!
I live in Merrill Crescent Croydon HIlls and I'm interested in finding out more about the history of the area. I know that Merrill Crescent originally joined onto Plymouth at both ends (now a walkway for the eastern side). I was able to get a rough idea of the stages of Croydon Hills from old Melways, but that's about it.
I grew up on Crossman drive and can see the house in the footage, except we moved into it around 1986/87 I think. My parents still live there to this day. Most of the roads and layout heading into Ringwood remained the same until the very late 90’s. Gatters Rd I remember driving on in 2004 and it was still unsealed and looked identical to 1983. Next to Warrenwood park, a kinder garden was built a few years after this video. I remember going there.
This is excellent to see as I currently live in the area and it’s strange to see it so long ago! From the looks of things my street doesn’t even exist yet in the video but many other things I recognise still exist today!

Thanks for commenting. I grew up in Warranwood when it was a very rural area. Our property minus the house is still there - now occupied by St James Anglican Church at 21 Bemboka Road. My Dad grew flowers cherries and berries there up until the C of E bought the property in 1977. The house remained for several years after that until they eventually built the current church in front of it before knocking it down a few years later. Cheers :D
I grew up in Heathmont 50 years ago. Great memories and i very much remember Ringwood like it was yesterday. Does anyone remember the little kiosk next to the Ringwood train station (early 70's). I used to get off the train after working in the city and it was either a delicious curried mushroom pie from the kiosk or i would scoot over to Eastland for a slice of cheesecake. 😊😊
Iceland had some good bands on a Saturday night. Hush was memorable, and saw Mental as Anything just as they were starting out, they were playing pretty much only Beatle covers, no originals that I can remember. Pretty sure I saw Dragon there also. I was 13 at that time. A long time ago 😟

I only went to a few live band events at Iceland because I was a bit young to be going there on a Saturday night when the place was packed out. It cost a fair bit extra too when the big bands were playing. When the Mentals were playing almost no one was there, they were a totally unknown band at that time. But I remember sitting only metres from them and appreciating how good they were, even though I was not into Beatles music. Hush was good because they included big flame throwers at the side of the stage shooting flames up into the air. Good music too.

Thanks for posting this, memory lane indeed. Once a resident of Wonga Road, did lots of hooning in my mini around these roads. What ever happened to wiper vanes? They were to “must have” accessory and definitely made the wipers work better …. (mmmm…not 😎) . Have been living in the UK and now Queensland ever since … all a distant memory .

This is terrific. My family moved to Warranwood (closer to the Ringwood-Warrandyte Rd end though) in 1993 when I was 13, so my knowledge and memories of this area start from then. But of course, a lot has changed even since then! Ringwood Station as seen in your video was largely identical to how it looked when I first started travelling through there by bus and train as a high-schooler. I spent a lot of time at that bus stop waiting for the 300, 364, 366... haha. I have good memories of Eastland shopping centre, too. Back then, the food court was where the building ended, but now it's the very centre of a very fancy complex! It's amazing how little Maroondah Hwy had changed around that area until only recently - Ringwood really took its time getting its act cleaned up!

When I used to go to my Grandmother's place up on the hills in Ringwood, the view downwards leading to the Maroondah Highway had a building type of place that was all white that always caught my eye. Seeing that video I can recognise that white place being on the Mount Dandenong Road near the turnoff on the Maroondah Highway. I wonder what that white building was?.

Previously known as Daisey’s Hotel, it has been an icon of the Ringwood area since 1877 but has recently been sold and is to be demolished to make way for redevelopment including residential apartments.

Hi Rob. Thank you so much for replying to me. That is the building I was referring to. My Uncle told me nearly 30 years ago that white building was called the Big Billabong restaurant during its Tudor styled building years, but I wasn't sure when I saw the video. Seeing the pictures of that article you just showed me made me realize that the building has gone through a number of changes over its history. My Uncle used to drink at Daisey's numerous times. I didn't know that Daisey's was at once that old Tudor styled building. Thanks for telling me about the history of the old Tudor styled building Rob. I think it is sad that they may demolish Daisey's, it's an important part of Ringwood's history.

I lived in Loughnan Rd and my Mum was the caretaker of the Schwerkolt Cottage and the Museum (when it got built) on weekends. LC Torana? I don't remember any 'Rob Carter' at the 1/4 mile drags spots. :) How could you be so rich to own a movie camera back then? I mean we had slide nights from Kodak stills, but a movie camera? Were you working at Channel 10? My girlfriend lived just off Wantirna Rd. But really from Croydon Drive-Inn area up Maroondah Hwy and around was quite good. Thanks.

Ah didnt think of the copyright laws.Only reason i mentioned it was I remember seeing another home made movie online someone had made in the Frankston area by memory , and u could hear the radio in the car in the background (3XY by memory) and it was really good watching the scenery and having the same era songs playing in the background. . Very interesting. As a kid lived in City road Ringwood and Adele court Ringwood, not very good memories, but now as a big boy built in Croydon North. It’s ok but would prefer to be further out away from neighbours.

Friends had a farm on the left of Gatters Road and the big W was the way I used to love driving there.

I think Billabong was the name of the hotel’s restaurant at some stage, most likely during the time your uncle was referring to.

Very interesting. As a kid lived in City road Ringwood and Adele court Ringwood, not very good memories, but now as a big boy built in Croydon North. It’s ok but would prefer to be further out away from neighbours.
