Scotty Kilmer I have a 2000 Ford F-150 XLT. I checked the spark plugs on the passenger side but I noticed that the plugs are not in the valve cover, they are beside the valve cover. So my question is what’s causing oil to go into the spark plugs? The valve cover looks nice and clean! Could it be the intake manifold gasket that’s going bad?
I'm 53 yrs old and did this with help from my son. We followed your video which was a little different because I have a 2012 Ford Fusion SE 4 cylinder. It was easier than I expected. I was quoted $400+ just to chane the 4 sparkplugs and coils. They wanted to charge another $200 to change the gasket! Thank you so much for your videos!
different cars actually have different designs, some have the tube seal built into the valve cover gaskets, some can be changed from the top, some from the inside, and some actually require removal of the tube assembly itself.
Scotty you’re the best. Everyone else is too busy trying to seem smart, that they don’t actually give a god descriptive detail on how to actually fix the problem.
@trevockeys if they're filled with oil, the engine is just wearing out, period. it would need rebuilding, more than that thing's worth really. When they fill with oil, they will not spark and start up. Scotty
Appreciate your videos Scotty. My 2016 Optima was guzzling oil. My mechanic stated that oil was getting through the O ring and wetting the spark plugs causing me to sputter and misfire. He recommended a complete engine rebuild. When I took it to the dealership, they replaced the spark plugs, PCV valve, rocker gasket cover, fuel pump gasket and fuel pipe, and completed an oil change and 2 part throttle body service. I'm back and running again this week but I fear all this work still isn't going to fix the excessive oil consumption issue. There also seems to be a lot of back and forth online about whether a bad gasket would allow the spark plugs to get soaked. Keep up the good work, pal. I'm here every time something up with my car.
Depending upon the motor, the spark plug tubes can be leaking from the bottom, but there is no easy way to know that. The tubes are either pressed-in to the cylinder head or threaded. On the 5FSE motor in this video, you can double stack the hex nuts on one tube and counter rotate the nuts together tight to lock the threads, then turn both counter-clockwise to unscrew the spark plug tubes, then clean and dry the bottom threads - apply a temperature tolerant thread sealant and re-install the tubes. Typically, the factory shop manual suggests the tubes are sealed for life at the factory - but they can leak from the bottom of the tube. Mine are over 30 years old and it can't hurt to reseal them.
@jstory25 depends where the oil is, if the whole plugs are wet, the spark plug tube gaskets just need changing as in this video. If only the firing ends are worn, yes, the engine has internal wear like valve seals being bad or worn piston rings. BIG money there. Scotty
Just changed plugs myself for the first time & saw oil, got that OH NO feeling! So thankful for Scotty! Watch your videos all the time & fixing up on my new '06 xB . You're the man! Thanks for making working on my car easier & even fun!
Scotty saves the day again! Had this happening to a jet ski I just bought and was thinking I made a really bad mistake in buying it! I thought I had a major engine problem. Nope just spark plug tubes gaskets! Thanks a bunch Scotty!!
@Elementlmage yep, total engine rebuild would be needed in most cases, but if it runs, live with it. And if you want to keep it, get one of those used japanese engines to replace it with, as I show in my vid" How to replace an engine in your car"
depends what's left to grab. Ford plugs break all the time like that, and they make a special kit for removing them that has all kinds of neat tools for grabbing what's left and getting it out. It works great, and all auto parts stores either sell em or can order em. I got mine at an Oreilly's auto store in texas.
you get one question, this is free after all. It's rather hard changing those tubes out due to little working room. Try some AT 205 reseal, it can often stop seal leaks. Hard to find, I get it at amazon
Yeah guys, me too!, I had a 1994 - CAMRY, for the Wifey, & 2000 - CAMRY, for the in-law, but he forgot the most important part, Noticed he mentioned the VALVE - COVER- & Valve Cover - TUBES. WELL I did this same exact job, One month later, I find out that I'm still having LEAKS on top of my spark plugs!!, So, I start asking around, other MECH. W/ much experi than me of coarse, & he told me that the spark plug tubes, are CUT in half in 2 - pieces, & are threaded together, & maybe some factory some manufacturers did not put any silicone on the threads and that's where the oil is leaking from.... Cuz it was driving me nuts and crazy like where is the oil coming from??? 🤔 Anywho, just thought I would share this with you guys or someone who needs some help....
This video covers my exact issue in this exact engine in my 1993 Celica, will be doing this in the next week or so. Your videos have given me the knowledge and confidence to work on my own car.
Very helpful video, thank you. Question, what do I do with the tube full of oil after changing the gasket. Do I just leave the oil in there and will dry eventually or do I drain it somehow? thank you
oil on the firing end of the plug means either valve seals or piston rings are bad and using oil, or a starting to blow head gasket. More often a blowing head gasket causes oil and misfiring. Try my video "how to tell if your head gasket is blown"
I remove all the plugs and crank the engine, then it throws it out. coils can only truly be tested dynamically with a freeze frame oscilliscope and years of reading wave forms. Best left to a pro. Small tests are not worth the time.
Great video, but it only covers one potential cause of spark plug tube leakage. The absolute best way to remedy oil in the tubes is while you have your valve cover off to change the gasket and upper spark plug tube seals is to remove the spark plug tubes themselves. They just screw into the cylinder head. Clean off both the lower and upper threads with a wire brush, apply your favorite sealant to the lower threads (I like Toyota FIPG--get it at Amazon), then screw each tube securely back into the cylinder heads. I use a small pipe wrench with the teeth ground down a bit to remove the tubes and avoid marring. I've repaired many this way, it works very well. The potential for oil to seep past the threads in the head that is constantly bathed in oil is much greater than the splash getting past the seals at the top of the tubes. So, if you're experiencing oil leakage in the spark plug tubes and you ONLY replace the upper tube seals, don't be surprised if your problem persists. Thanks.
blown8950 hi i have a 2010 toyota camry le V4 2.5l i just replaced all of my spark plugs and noticed that one of them had oil JUST ON THE THREADS nothing past it. Would you recommend i do what you're talking about in your comment, or just change the Valve cover gasket?
Thanks for this comment! I went to change my spark plugs today and found oil in only one well. So it makes sense that the one tube is leaking while the others are still clean.
those 2.2 toyotas are extremy reliable. I seen a few with 400,000 miles and dont burn oil. I wish toyota still made those. Our 08 prius has 240,000 burns a lot of oil but runs like new
It's actually the spark plug tubes leaking. They are threaded on the bottom to the head, with silicone on them. It requires a special tool to remove the tubes in order to put new silicone on the threads.( Don't forget to clean the old silicone off the threads.)
My civic has 238k miles and is still running strong. I just discovered why I was leaking a hell of a lot of oil and it's a bad valve cover gasket. I also have oil on my plugs and never thought of that. Thanks for the informative video Scotty!
my spark plugs are covered with oil on the other side of the plug...the threaded side with the spark. strong smell of gas as well. Any videos for that?
Oreillys sells the spark plug tubes. MSPT5 is the melling part number. I bought a set just in case I goober up the old ones since they have like 200k miles on them they are pretty tight in there. the threads go into the cylinder head thus oil on plug end. they misfire action
If oil is on the inside covering the threads with the spark, you have a bad problem. Your car will most likely have blue smoke at startup or acceleration. This indicates bad head gasket or a bad piston ring seal. Both cost thousands to repair :( . Scotty has another video describing this and he uses ATP reseal in the video, but that is basically a band-aid on a gunshot wound (it helps, but it isn't permanent). This wouldn't cause a smell of gas though, so you may have a separate issue as well. It's been around a year since you posted this, so it would be interesting to see what happened.
Philly1224 i have just 1 of my spark plugs covered with oil the THREADS ONLY though. So far no smell or any oil above that.... Im planning on replacing the valve cover gasket but after reading your comment im not to sure that will solve the problem... What would you recommend?
Its usually the valve cover gaskets its a common problem I discovered this when changing my spark plugs at my local mechanic they were due at the same time of the plugs so Im changing the cover gaskets and spark plug tubes so I don't have to worry ever again. It beats having to change the plugs just a few months later again LOL!
My stepbrother's 4-cylinder Mitsubishi has two oil covered spark plugs and a little leak in the Valve Cover Gasket as well. Doing it today. I would not use a screwdriver to pop the cover off though, could score or bend where the seal is made
not necessarily that is the fix, the tubes are so high that you would be filling up oil at the top, so its less likely. its more of the actual metal tubing that leaks that is threaded into the head.
The valve cover gaskets were leaking on a 2002 Altima 3.5SE with the VQ engine that my mom owned. I had to replace both plastic valve covers and the gaskets. The tube seals cannot be easily replaced.
Integrafreak1 The VQ engine is a bit of a pain because of how it's transversely mounted. It's about a six-hour job, most of which is spent removing parts, including the intake manifold and window cowl, to get to the rear cylinder bank - smh. My Acura V6s are a bit easier, but there are a bunch of brackets to remove to get to the driver's side seals. Also, Honda added a second set of lower seals in many of their cars that require the valve train to be removed to replace them. I'm replacing those now in my Acura Legend because of a misfire issue that appears to be related to oil in the spark plug wells; the once-rubber lower seals were brittle and hard like plastic.
hoopfan71 I own a 1996 Nissan Maxima, with the VQ30DE engine and I recently replaced the front valve cover gasket was a breeze, but the rear, however, will be a pain to get off. because of the intake manifold.
@EncinitasLokal often a sign of oil burning inside that cylinder, meaning the engine is wearing. But if it runs fine, just leave it. Engine rebuilds are expensive. Scotty

Scotty Kilmer a buddy of mine is a Toyota tech and told me they can also leak from the bottom of that dork tube is that true??? If so why didn’t you mention that in the video? Thanks Scotty K
If the seals are not built into the valve cover gaskets, then they are part of the head and a royal pain to replace. try some AT 205 reseal, I get it at amazon
ticking is often fuel injectors ticking or valves ticking. Try to figure out which one, injectors that tick but run good can be lived with. Worn valves can't be for long.
I have seen some mechanics remove the spark plug tube , clean them , and place sealant on the threads. The oil gets in mostly from the base of the tube.
hahahahahahah.. OK, let's see the five minute removal of these tubes in a Nissan 350Z! With that car, you remove the whole induction system.. (Intake, throttle body, intake plumbing and all associated wiring) then you can remove the coil pack from each cylinder, then remove the plugs and finally the valve covers. Several hours later, you may have it all back together and hopefully, if you did it all right, the engine will start and actually idle. Loads of fun. Now, with my 4 cyl Civic, it took all of an hour to do and I was taking my time with it all.
fuel injectors are not adjustable. Valves can be adjusted on some cars, and others , most of them today, use hydraulic adjusters that automatically adjust the valves. Only a bad lifter that's replaced can fix em if they get out of adjustment.
I haven't worked on one of those in ages so I don't remember what number of each part there is. Kits are supposed to come with all grommets seals and a gasket. If yours doesn't, get one that does.
Fucking Nissan makes you change the whole valve cover to fix this damn issue lol. The spark plug tubes don't have seals themselves, it's all a part of the valve cover. This is why I like working on my e39 way more.
@paingain100 if there are seals when you remove the valve cover gasket, replace those, many are internal. If not, nothing you can do, the head would need repairing.
dude i FREAKED when i pulled out those plug wires. thank you SO much. i know absolutely nothing about cars. i've hooked up radios and stuff but nothing else but this video helped man..THANK YOU!
do this video to fix the oil leaking into the spark plug holes. And replace the distributor ONLY after if that alone doesn't fix it. Of course change the spark plug wires too as oil ruins them

@imFAMOUSxD certainly replace the gasket set, but normally those old things need new distributors when they do that. If you have no spark when it doesn't start, replace the dist. Scotty
check the plugs again, and if they have oil on the new ones, your engine is just flat starting to wear out from worn piston rings and or valve seals. Most guys live with it as long as they start up eventually
alternator or battery can be weak, auto zones check em free. But oil on end of plugs is bad news, internal engine wear like worn valve seals or piston rings.

Philly1224 i have just 1 of my spark plugs covered with oil the THREADS ONLY though. So far no smell or any oil above that.... Im planning on replacing the valve cover gasket but after reading your comment im not to sure that will solve the problem... What would you recommend?
Tania Guzman did you fix? What was the problem?
you can use 3m Weatherstripping sealer
If the whole plug was covered in oil at the top from previous leaking, yes.
yes, often a weak fuel injector on that cylinder alone, or a spark plug that isn't firing corretly.
yeaaaa. i wish it was that easy on everything
it can be that and many other things like bad valve seals or worn piston oil control rings.
I would not use a screwdriver to pop the cover off though, could score or bend where the seal is made
My favorite mechanic videos right here on this channel. Thank you Scotty!
not necessarily that is the fix, the tubes are so high that you would be filling up oil at the top, so its less likely. its more of the actual metal tubing that leaks that is threaded into the head.
It's the thread connection that leak I doubt the oil can travel upward past the seal and top threads and washer
because that's how most cars are designed. Some toyotas do have the seals on the top though and can be done by themselves.
I have this problem.but its a G35, not so simple.
The valve cover gaskets were leaking on a 2002 Altima 3.5SE with the VQ engine that my mom owned. I had to replace both plastic valve covers and the gaskets. The tube seals cannot be easily replaced.
Exactly. This car he worked on made it look like a breeze lol
Race car
@EncinitasLokal often a sign of oil burning inside that cylinder, meaning the engine is wearing. But if it runs fine, just leave it. Engine rebuilds are expensive. Scotty
that will ruin the cat, empty the gas tank and replace the fuel filter quick. Scotty Kilmer a buddy of mine is a Toyota tech and told me they can also leak from the bottom of that dork tube is that true??? If so why didn’t you mention that in the video? Thanks Scotty K
**spark
If the seals are not built into the valve cover gaskets, then they are part of the head and a royal pain to replace. try some AT 205 reseal, I get it at amazon
When I went to change my spark plugs there were 3 spark plugs missing lol
Omg 🤣🤦how was it running?? Or wasn't it? Lol
@@Kuessemir it was running 🏃♀️but loudly 🤐
Mine works on 3 or 2
ticking is often fuel injectors ticking or valves ticking. Try to figure out which one, injectors that tick but run good can be lived with. Worn valves can't be for long.
Thanks so much!! Just what I needed! You da MAN!!!
Several hours later, you may have it
all back together and hopefully, if you did it all right, the engine will start and actually idle.
Loads of fun. Now, with my 4 cyl Civic, it took all of an hour to do and I was taking my time with it all.
same for a N53 BMW engine ffs
About do this to my Z this weekend. 🙄
V6 life
EJSFilms2K Its worse on a 3000gt trust me 🙃
fuel injectors are not adjustable. Valves can be adjusted on some cars, and others , most of them today, use hydraulic adjusters that automatically adjust the valves. Only a bad lifter that's replaced can fix em if they get out of adjustment.
scotty on the mirrors looks like mrs Clinton
_
LOL
Lmao. Hes funny as hell
😂😂😂
Lmao
yes, try try the seals and a valve cover gasket kit first
scotty da man
+jason jennings thanks 👍
I haven't worked on one of those in ages so I don't remember what number of each part there is. Kits are supposed to come with all grommets seals and a gasket. If yours doesn't, get one that does.
And don't forget to put some extra sealant on that big gouge where you just drove that big screwdriver istraight into the mating services 😲
Mark O yes cause the flat head was worked real hard to get that stubborn valve cover unstuck, got a vid to show us how its done 😏
@richu27 no, just leak oil.
Fucking Nissan makes you change the whole valve cover to fix this damn issue lol. The spark plug tubes don't have seals themselves, it's all a part of the valve cover. This is why I like working on my e39 way more.
@kipper2me the kits come with both gaskets. Scotty
mine is a subaru......
LOL
got the same problem with mine too. I think I'm done with Subaru now what with the head gaskets and all
Its a pain in the ass.....
@ShortyzProductionz Yes, carburetor is messed up, try a complete tear down and clean, soaking overnight in cleaner
generally I just fix my own motorcycles
any auto parts store, or any dealer
I just mix dirt in my oil, never had a leaky engine in my life
Hmmmm.....tell me more!!! Does it really work???
Thank you Scotty, I thought my car my only ride the one that gets me to work was a goner, but you gave me hope man thank you
I melt em with a blow torch. seals can be whacked in it a big socket
change the gasket and oil seals onthe plugs, and pray it's not internal oil problems on the firing end of the plug
@zachcooley yes, if the oil is on the burning end.
do this video to fix the oil leaking into the spark plug holes. And replace the distributor ONLY after if that alone doesn't fix it. Of course change the spark plug wires too as oil ruins them
@pacmanlatino replace the valve cover gasket, the spark plug tube seals, and all spark plug wires, that might fix it all

@YungStar490 that means the engine is wearing out inside, either valve seals or piston rings.
It could be, oil fouled plugs won't fire right and normaly that means serious internal engine wear
@camaroXpharaoh leaking fuel injectors or blowing head gasket on that cylinder are the two main reasons
alternator or battery can be weak, auto zones check em free. But oil on end of plugs is bad news, internal engine wear like worn valve seals or piston rings.
