This guy is the man. Great teacher. That is a talent. Lots of people can know their stuff but not a lot of people can teach what they know properly in a clear and concise manner. Every video I watch I learn a ton of stuff I never knew before.
Love your old school teaching of possible problems with our cars. This is the stuff they teach in Automotive colleges. So we appreciate you sharing the information. Thank You sir🙂🙏🏾
Good to hear, my spark plugs have some off that white deposit on my spark plugs, but my scion has about 250k and that Toyota engine is known for burning oil. Going to change the plugs and see if the p0302 goes away if not I’ll replace the coils too.
You should make a video of how you got into fixing cars and where you got all this knowledge from. I like the fact you do everything on your own! Fixing cars your house or land that's very inspirational.
Dude I’m so glad your channel is back. Without your Hyundai timing belt videos, I would never have attempted doing the timing belt on my car. ($700 at a local shop). Looking forward to your new content
just in case scotty is watching : you know he is, dont do that, that will break that, will pay for that, youll get ripped off, ive seen it over and over, you got scammed, you paying to much, change your honda waterpump in 3 steps, all you gotta do, ive gone millions of miles, my grandpa said, back in my day. ha ha ha. good to see your back. great video.
When I was changing spark plugs way back at 30,000 miles (and the ignition 'points') I looked at the condition of each spark plug. Now in 2023 I have almost forgot about them! Thanks for the video
I'm old enough to remember when the Fat Albert albert lead in song began that way. "HEY HEY HEEEY! It's FAAAAT Albert! And I'm gonna sing a song for youHOOOO!"
I have in my entire life only put one of my vehicles in the shop twice. Neither time did they fix it. Still broke despite the $1200 spent to do what I had already done & informed the different shops of this in advance. Aside he's the best one I have found to help diagnose and fix your car or truck and doing yourself can save you a lot considering that I only paid $1500 for that vehicle $1200 wasted in the shops knowing nothing more than myself
So I did a compression test today on my 1995 VW , 184-190-185-185… engine looks good , checked spark plugs after watching this video , my plugs look good no bad gap but I do have the carbon look on all 4 of them .
I changed mine in my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7 liter it took me 4 hours. The gap on a new plug for my vehicle is .045". The burned up ones where Champion Copper Plus the gap was around .065"+ . The new ones I put in are Champion Platinum spark plugs the gap new is .045" and that's what there where factory gaped to. The MPG's have gone up to 21-23 MPG's at 55 mph on flat highway. The old ones I was getting more like 17-20 MPG's.
My truck has 135 thousand miles on the original plugs. The code came up no communication. To say the least.🤐 Not even a engine light stayed on. I would part it out but not sure what part is good. 🫤
I remember the day with leaded gas, after doing some highway driving your tail pipe and plugs would have a whitish look to them, today's unleaded gas burns cleaner and doesn't require spark plugs to be changed as often, currently driving a '64 Merc 352CID {all original} and use a lead substitute to help protect the valves
Ha me too. Had my truck up on blocks and and no one stole a thing. At least that would have given me a place to start replacing parts. Plugs will be one of the first on the list. Yes it has gas. 🤏
love the video. i have someone i already follow but your video was real, like i was standing next to you. i leaned so much from this. i dint have to watch multiple videos to learn multiple things. i actually understood your terminology. thanks.
Funny this was suggested to me, havent been on my computer in like 2 months.. just got done doing some plugs on my 95 f150 5.0. I only got 4 plugs changed in like 5 hours because the plugs were breaking off and refusing to come out. But the 4 that I got out were really healthy looking plugs according to you, so that's good. Especially considering the truck has 211k miles on original motor
on my other car, 09 impala ss..... mines was heavy burning oil ... a quart every 500 miles because of the active fuel management i was changing plugs every 3000 miles or so. i bought a tune and turned it off and havent had a problem since
Gonna try 2 steps colder and new wires, then hope that is what's causing the carbon on my plugs to build up so quickly. Probably change the air filter too now that you mentioned it.
This is helpful, I think it helps me understand what I found. 2020 Mustang 4 cylinder, 18K Miles. First few oil changes free from the dealer, decided I wanted to take over maintenance myself so completed my first oil change the other day. The next day I pulled the four spark plugs to replace and was horrified to find oil dripping from the threads on second plug from the back. I didn't think oil could be actually getting in when the engine was running because the car had been running fine, so looks like I must have overfilled oil despite being so careful. Now my question is, can this result in long-term damage? The car seems to run all right and I haven't seen any smoke out the tailpipe, so not quite sure where I stand.
Way2go sparky😁If I may, the insulator, beside the internal resistance, their integrity also worth regarding. Even if notice a fine dark line that can't be cleaned likely indicates a crack that will get noticed under operation. Careful removal & installation, with cleanliness, also concern for ignition system components because HV will find any break & deterioration along with any dirt oil fluid smudges.
Enjoy your work. Have misfires on Cadillac Northstar. 2 plugs were "clean" but head gasket combustion test was negative. Compression test? Leak down? Thanks
Great and informative video, RnW. You didn't say what a normal working spark plug would look like. That is, one working in normal conditions, no lean/rich mixture, no oil leaks, no oil burn, no coolant leak or burn, no timing issues, etc. Also, what would a brownish looking spark plug indicate? Electrodes are perfect, and no excess deposits on the plug.
Great video!!! A spark plug in my 2010 Honda Odyssey is oil-fouled, and the dealership says it's probably the piston ring, because it happened again just after 9 months it was previously fouled. I just want to keep it running for the next couple of months until I trade it in for a new care.... Can I just get the one spark plug replaced, just to keep it running for a few months?
Great to see that you have started loading content regularly again. Am I the first to ask about the Audi sleeper car? Wondering if that biturbo is making silly power. Also figuring though the farm may have caused a dip in funds while getting the infrastructure up to OCD standards, and maybe you're just enjoying the car as a driver not a racer. Thanks again for the content.
When I was a child doctors used to ask: "when/how did it start happening?" 🙄 Doesn’t how or when the problem started to happen make a difference in the diagnostic? I have a 20 year old Volvo s40 with 120,000 miles which looks like it just came out of the dealer! It was running great until… getting on a freeway had a bad truck driver coming really fast which forced me to accelerate really hard… it got me out of trouble but when I got home the engine light started flashing and the car sounded and felt like misfiring. I have another car so I stopped driving it since I learned it could make it worse. I replaced the spark plugs and coils and the catalytic converter which was the original and really needed to be replaced; however, nothing stopped the flashing light but when I think about it in my case what are the chances that the hard acceleration could've caused the plug wires or spark plugs go bad? They were not old before anyway and I’ve always replaced everything I can with original Volvo parts! So I’m afraid I have to think the worse that could’ve happened… sadly since I bought this car originally in 2003 and used it to take my son to school.. wanted to keep it but now I doubt I’ll be able to.. any ideas pls welcome!
NGK double platinum for my car (OE) lasts thousands of miles and really good MPG. I tried Iridium ones but mpg about the same. I want to try the rhodium tip ones, but they aren't available yet for my car.
once you hit a certain point in the materials, its less about mpg and more about lifespan. the plat irids should last for 100k, minimum. the plats should last for 60k, regular irids should last for 80k. under normal use in a well maintained engine, anyway. halve all numbers for forced air induction systems, the same way you would for oil change intervals.
The “anatomy” of the spark plug-it just sparks the imagination! Miss fire! Little Miss Fire! YOUR FIRED!-lol. Man o man! Oil goin’ out chur tailpipe! Sounds messy dude! If your talking about grandpa it’s time to get a pack of adult diapers! Same remedy for that leaky fuel injector! Adult diapers! Lol. As a care taker this just sounds too hysterical. Detonation!! Oh snap!!! Can you imagine if doctor’s talked to their patients this way????!!!! Come to think of it, this would be a good way to bring up that sensitive ED conversation with your MD!!! You start talking auto shop and you will have a script for Viaga before you can say “BOB’s your uncle!” He will totally get it!
Very nice video; keep up the good work I have a Honda Car with 1.3 IDSI engine having 8 spark plugs. The engine is powerful but the only center two spark plugs get really black after one week driving. I replaced old park plugs with new NGK spark plugs but the problem is same. Can you kindly guide which is causing this issue?
In my case my wonderful car WAS the family car before it got handed down to me. & I wanna keep it going. It has way over 200,000 miles. More like 262,000 literally all 4 of my spark plugs came out white & just burns the oil... So in my case "it is what it is" & I bought new ones at autozone. Denso brand 9$ per plug so like 40$ for 4 new spark plugs.
Do you need to decarbonise or clean the engine some way if you find you have been running rich for longer than you realised? Resulting in inside tail pipe is black, so O2 Sensor likely also coated and catalytic converter probably also started to be affected. Do you run some kind of cleaner through the system? Hello Bro. You didn’t talk about how to rectify the Overfilled engine oil causing wet spark plugs problem. I took my Volvo 2.5T to Meineke to do oil Change last weekend, they over-filled with about a Quartz+. I have extracted the oil back to normal level and cleaned my 2nd and 3rd spark plugs which were wet. Car started in the morning. Now, back to square 1, cracking and no start again! Do I have to do a major repair? I will appreciate any insight from you.
Mine just came out and are a little orange but not bad or black. I have been smelling some oil but no smoke when starting. And the dipstick pretty much remains full. Could it be the valve cover gasket sprk plug seals? They were changed.
I changed my plugs in July and checked them 5 months later and the driver side looked like they still brand new. 2012 chevy silverado. I'm using bosch platinum I can't figure out if my injectors are blocked

Trying to get my '06 Kia optima ex v6 running and this was so helpful (she also has 248k miles under her belt)

Good information.. thanks. My vote is for you President!
Hell, I'd vote for his dogs over what we have now.
beginning of the video: idk how to read spark plugs
end of video: ok i'm a pro now
Good to see your channel growing sir.

Wow perfect video thank just found out I had a leaky fuel injector thank you so much
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.. i automatically 'like' every video as soon as I start watching.
This is the best description of spark plug reading I've seen. Where's that mystery fruit?
Thank you. One small thing you said answered all my questions.

Yup reading a spark plug can tell u a lot of info👍

this guy taught me more in 10 minutes than my high school engineer in 4 years
That's crazy, I just did a plug read today. Then you uploaded this. Good timing! :)
You forgot blown head gasket spark plugs they are so clean

Always learning from you, man, thank you.
Best video I’ve seen on this subject, thanks a lot boss! 🙏🏽
Great content, excellent teacher. Thank you!
All your Videos Are great. Thanks for the Time you Are putting in to it. Keep up the good work body 💪. Greatings from Denmark 👌
I tried to read my spark plugs but all they said was NHK
Do you need to decarbonise or clean the engine some way if you find you have been running rich for longer than you realised? Resulting in inside tail pipe is black, so O2 Sensor likely also coated and catalytic converter probably also started to be affected.
Do you run some kind of cleaner through the system? Or just clean what can be accessed and hope highway driving cleans the rest?
Excellent video. Thank you Sir 👍
Glad your back bro learn so much off your videos
Hey what about Spark plugs that come out wet and have the stench of gas?
Do a video if synthetic is worth it
Super informative and helpful, thank you!
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ?!?!
I have been getting a code that goes back and forth from random misfire to cyl #3 misfire. Recently replaced rotor, cap, plugs and wires and still have the same problem.
After those new parts, I found what looks like a black lightning strike on the cyl #3 plug.
The strike mark is on the porcelain where the part # is.
Compression seems to be close or with little variation (by my understanding) between all 6 cylinders.
The highest compression on 4 of the cylinders is 183 lbs.
The lower pressure on 2 of them is 175 lbs. which includes cyl #3.
Does that black strike mark imply any particular source or cause of the misfire ?
PS: Thank you for all your videos. I really appreciate and enjoy them.
Thank you! So helpful and concise.
Iridium plugs are hard to figure if they're worn or not.
Most mechanics would replace based on mileage. Around 80,000 miles I'd say is good enough. The more it wears the harder your ignition coils have to work. Also make sure your plugs are also fiscally ok, the ceramic has to be intact and the gap has to be correct.
@@Brandon-uy1uv if the plugs are fiscally ok does that mean they have a good 401k investment portfolio? Ha, sorry couldn't resist.
Great video thanks! But what about if you got some sort of little metal stuck (balls) to the spark plugs? Looks like a mini welding.
Also if you have oil contamination on threads you could have worn valve cover gasket
Spark plug tube seals*
Not threads. Above it.
Awesome video, really appreciate it.
I love this guy... thumbs up for you.
Dude thanks 🙏🏽. I thought I had “Oil Fouled Spark Plugs” , turns out that I have “Carbon Fouled Plugs”. You ARE THE MAN! Heheheheheh
Very helpful information, thank you
Beavis and Butthead! Haven’t thought of them in a long time. Anyways glad you’re back!
I feel like a pro already …thank you --great video
Question.
1999 Corolla with 410000 miles.
She burns oil. I stay on top of it.
What minimum items should I replace during a rebuild.
Piston rings and what else?
Thanks.
Perfect explanations. Thank you!
Good recap, thank you sir
Spark plugs covered in oil can be caused by a leaking valve cover.
i have greyish oil on only one spark plug. had a code p0138 so changed the o2 sensor bank 2. got a p0137 so i assumed it to be because i bought a cheap o2 sensor. just replaced that with the oem ntk brand for 2010 mazda 3. also replaced all 4 plugs. havent driven it yet so idk if a code will return. car has a shake but runs good. shake only noticeable when in in low rpms. maybe a mount? idk. wat do u think? im sure scotty would say junk it and get a toyota. lol

Hey thanks for some of the information you put out there! Much love from Houston to Houston lol
Excellent video & explanation. Thanks!
