If he never tried to switch up his sound and go street he would’ve been fine. He couldn’t see that his talent was more than being a chameleon and fitting in. His biggest talent was standing out with songs outside the normal conversation of rap.
He was originally street he went commercial to be successful he tried to return his roots but his core fanbase wasn’t what made him multi platinum it was his crossover fans
Okay, now this is a good one. B.O.B. had backpack/cypher/underground rhymes and he could’ve been next one up. Well done on this one. Now, do Petey Pablo and Bubba Sparxxx.
Yea bob was all over the radio at a time, having songs with Taylor swift and bruno mars which are both mega stars rn, he definitely self sabotaged himself
When you think about it, it takes a certain kind of mind to want to make it in the music business, or any kind of notable position. Think of all the actors, singers, rappers who are a little throwed off. I wouldn't call B.O.B a genius, but I think of the Kanye line "Name one genius that ain't crazy"
If B.O.B would’ve just stayed in his rap pop lane which was basically empty he would’ve been where Drake is now doing Taylor Swift numbers. B.O.B had the cross over look he was almost like a hipster but a cool one. There was a time where he had more hits than Drake. I think he wanted approval from the streets hence why he started making rap records that was out of his lane. If he would’ve remained making great music he would’ve been seen as the new Andre 3000 and black fans would’ve eventually accepted him. I remember white kids saying he’s the best rapper alive at one point but he drifted away from making music for just his fans and try to appeal to the clubs. T.I should’ve talked him out of doing club records but he didn’t know any better. The conspiracy stuff was just the icing on the cake tbh🤷🏽♂️
The Andre 3000 comparison is good. I remember hearing him for the first time in 2008 with a song called “I’ll be in the sky”. I said back then he has Andre 3000 skill set he just needed to find way to keep from sounding like a clone of him.
The truth is nobody knows how it would have played whether he stayed pop or not. Truth is staying hot for 5 years is rare for most artist. Being relevant for 10 makes you a legend. There is only a handful of people that mark it that far regardless if they are still making good music or not
You nailed it on the head he just wanted to be accepted by the urban community instead of staying in his pop lane and grew from there. He would be way bigger than he was right now I still listen to b.o.b
I could have easily seen b.o.b in the same lane as pitbull or flo rida who have made a huge successful career with pop rap dude was doing songs with Hayley Williams Taylor swift and introduced the world to Bruno mars he was made for that genre unfortunately he didn’t capitalize on it long term
He should have stayed in that pop lane and his career would have been bigger than it was. It was his third album that really had him kinda fell off musically
I’ll never forget the summer of 2010 when I first heard b.o.b I wanna say on that song airplanes he had so many hits during that year also the song with Bruno Mars so many hits man but he tried to become “woke “ dropping all the crazy theories about earth etc if I’m im not mistaken even in the music he became woke if you’re not already a woke artist who makes that kind of music it just doesn’t work unless you’ve already established that it’s actually a setback for the artist unless what made them known if he would’ve stuck with what made him B.O.B he would still on top
You made the perfect point - rappers like Lil Wayne, Lupe Fiasco, 50 Cent, T.I. and many others would have sacrificed a limb to effortlessly make crossover Pop Rap like B.O.B. (50 roasted JA Rule for his pop rap leaning and then STOLE his style) but I just think B.O.B. became ashamed of his style and wanted respect as a street rapper and be rapper #1 billion.5 in a video with thick-ass video vixens and mean mugging in front of rented cars - he had a breakdown, got into beefs with scientists(!?) and hasn't recovered since - ( He REVELED in being the bad guy and the hate he was getting - an intelligent pop rapper telling everyone the earth is flat in 2018!?) he DARED his fans to unfollow him and then later deleted the same dumb flat earth tweets he was pushing on people - if that isn't mentally unwell self-sabotage, don't know what it - he probably didn't appreciate the impact of his talent until years after the fact, when it was hilariously too late - and rapfan goodwill does not live forever - he squandered his talent to find a better musical identity when he initially had the perfect one.....
Been waiting on this. B.O.B coulda been a great especially due to his versatility but he really burnt his whole career over night. I also wondered why he couldn’t make a classic he had all the tools to. He oversaturated himself.
@@controversialmann5345 Where's your music??? He's still more successful than you. Not everyone desires to stay famous. And he's still dropping quality projects. It's not his fault your music taste is trash and you only follow trends

Audio Push and Roscoe dash need attention for sure brother. Great video I agree with you about B.o.B and his views running many of us away but I still feel he has enough talent to get radio attention like Wale did recently
I wish people would have stuck thru it like I did he produced some really good music even during his conspiracies rhymes… always gonna be one of my favorite rappers even if he did face of with bill nye and Tyson
The Elements series of tapes were absolutely amazing and I wish more people listened to them. Water is my personal favorite. That said, his sound definitely seemed to have something of an identity crisis in it at a certain point. I didn't hate the street trap sound because I don't like putting people in boxes but B.O.B's alternative urban/rap pop vibe was just so perfect, I was clamoring for anything different and he had it all. He just seemed to stick with that trap vibe after a while though and then the conspiracy theories became his entire thing and it was just like...idk. It wasn't the same. I don't hate the conscious music but I do think it's ok to take a break from that occasionally. He got to a point for a few years that that was ALL he was doing and again, I LOVED all of the Elements chronicle. Why is it artists in that lane (Andre 3k, B.O.B., Vic Mensa, Lupe, etc) seem to never stick with it and blow up the way they should? Gambino might be the only one that did but even he got all depressed on BTI.
Sometimes people mess up their own life by making stupid decisions that don't make sense so that's why he should have stayed in his lane and keep those comments about the earth and other things to himself. And on a side note I have a you tube channel type in Russell Mills May 22, 2017 to find me.
I mean B.o.Bs first 3 albums were hot but going 4 years between 2013 (Underground Luxury) and 2017 (Ether) without an actual album was what killed his career IMO
Could it be he is what we perceived him as when he first came on the scene, but always viewed himself as a lyricist first and wanted that respect as such. He couldn't get that being a pop/ rap artist. As fans and listeners the sells and popularity should be irrelevant to us. We don't benefit from that. They do. Alot of the artist that appear on Stunted Growth are still some of the best artists to me regardless of them losing popularity and main stream status. Its pretty much a way of saying they lose touch with White America. Hard-core hip hop/rap fans know.
IMO Bobby always wanted to be a rapper growing up. But his style was more pop and maybe he didn't like being locked in that pop/rap category. Knowing he could rap circles around many other rappers he tried to show the world his versatility. He decided to use his platform to express his thoughts and legitimate facts! Unfortunately pop fans are way too dumbed down to understand wtf he's talking about. I still very much enjoy all of his music and look forward to more in the future.
