I want a Billie jazz album fr. It works so well for her, her choices and vocal style is in that realm to my ears. Also I know you’re a busy guy but I would like for you to check out jazz artists like Laufey and Samara joy
I definitely agree, perhaps Jazz can make a resurgence into the popular music sphere again. Laufey and Samara are wonderful artists, loved this comment :)
Bro what? she cant even sing. Its just the whispered falsetto garbage every single time. Its talentless. I really dont agree with Tristan in this. Seems more of a fanboy reaction than a real singing critique.
I love hearing that she wanted it to sound like she just cried... when I heard it for the first time I bursted out crying sooooo baaad. So I feel like she fulfilled her goal 🩷🥲
She said somwhere that the choice for the tone of the song was as if you'd just been crying if you pay attention it's almost like she's sobbing or gasping after a hard cry and it makes so much more powerful 💜💜
All her techniques, including her breaths, are in the service of the aesthetics of the song. She's not competing as a TV contestant for that perfect high score from vocal coaches.
Indeed. Why are people talking so much about how “hard”/“easy” it is to sing like that? It’s beautiful, it’s art. It’s like dismissing the art of Picasso or Mondriaan because it’s “just stripes of paint, easy”. 🤦♂️
But her vocal delivery *will* get high scores from vocal coaches tho? Among the singing styles ahe could have chosen, this is by far the most technically difficult (and also the best for the meaning of the song)
The world stops spinning while she’s singing. I think everyone in the audience just lost their mind and breath listening to this. It’s just breathtaking and you forget time and everything else during this perfomance. Amazing! ❤
I love her performing this live I know he mentioned in the video you can hear all the gasps of air she was taking between each lyric but I love that it’s that way cause it sounds just like how she said in the interview she wanted it to sound like. Like you had been crying then started singing. Everyone has cried so hard they are gasping for air to speak and get out what they’re feeling and I feel like that singing style mimics that perfectly. Billie is an icon
Dude, when I watched this interview a few days ago, I literally thought of you and how proud you'd be when you saw it.🤣 Remember when people used to say Billie Eilish is an industry plant and can't sing? LOL. The girl is fking phenomenal. I'm so proud of you both!
I love hearing Billie actually belting a few notes. People think she can't because she tends to be quiet and breathy, but she sneaks in crystal clear moments and other tricky little techniques that most people miss.
Her vocal are always amazing you are so on point with this. She has said in interviews that she sings this song this way because that’s how the song was intended to be. She seems pretty passionate about it and I love that about her!
This video was SO WELL DONE! Thank you for all of the care and attentiveness you put into splicing the videos of her speaking for herself as well as the samples of you demonstrating the techniques. I learned so much from this video about the craft and how to appreciate more about Billie ❤️🙌🏽
Was waiting for you to get to this. I watched the whole Variety interview with her and Finneas and was surprised to watch her do four or five different takes on how she could have done the song. I always suspected she had more under the hood but that really confirmed it. Can't wait to see what she does next.
She's gotten so much better as a vocalist in my opinion. I do agree, everybody says "oh she just whispers, she can't sing" Flat out not true. As another person said, the amount of control it takes to get that and to make it sounds so lovely is difficult. She is definitely gifted and taking advantage of her instrument. I'm so proud of her ❤
Stumbled across this after the Grammy awards and it is nice to see someone illuminate the technical aspects of the world’s greatest and most variable instrument the human voice.
I don’t know shit about vocals, and I was stunned when I saw this on SNL. I had no idea she had this in her to do live. The amount of air she’s using is obvious. She has to take deep breaths every few words. In that clip where she talks about it, she’s absolutely right. She could have done this song with her normal voice, and it probably would have been really good, but this style elevates it to another level. It’s what the song wanted. These kids are exceptionally talented.
Anyone who says that Billie Eilish isn’t a talented vocalist is clearly just talking out of their ass at this point. Seems like they’re trying to invent a reason to hate her or discredit her talent. If by now she hasn’t changed their mind with her countless examples of vocal talent, then they’re idiots plain and simple LOL
If that's something people are interested in I can! There's one with Olivia Rodrigo I saw recently too on songwriting but I'm not sure if there's vocal stuff there or not
This is a great review, well thought out. Saw a vid where Finnias explained that he never uses autotune on Billie’s voice. But what blew my mind is that her doubled takes were indistinguishable from the original.
Love how you mention how whisper singing is significantly harder than other vocal styles because when Mariah did it a while back in a few of her albums she was shamed for it. Back then people said she was resorting to an “easier” vocal approach it’s nice to see that now people realize how difficult whisper singing really is.
thank you thank you for this video. it's so interesting to watch how much control and knowledge of her own voice she has now, ho much she's grown. thank you for exploring it so deeply, i live for this and im so proud of her
Good review. Something about Billie's delivery is very evocative emotionally. I mean, I feel it. Every other cover of this I've heard just doesn't project the emotion and sentiments of the song the way she does. Ya, she and her bro are really amazing talents.
Honestly, who cares if it’s difficult or easy for her? It sounds absolutely gorgeous and that’s what makes a lot of people want to listen to her. What’s easy or difficult is going to vary from person to person depending on what they’ve practiced more. I have a friend who thinks it’s way harder to sing in head voice because she’s been singing in chest voice her whole life, and I am the opposite. I only knew how to sing in head voice until I was 25 and started learning how to sing in my chest voice. So I find singing in chest voice to be way more difficult and my chest range is trash, whereas she can go up to to the stratosphere in chest voice because she’s been practicing that way for way longer than me.
She is such a good singer, the way she sings the last part gave me chills because I really listen to the lyrics. The way she sings really is what she sings.
What a lovely performance! She's so talented. 😊 I enjoyed your reaction, it was very informative and fun. There's a beautiful cover of this by an artist named Corvyx. He's actually got a ton of awesome covers, like My Heart Will Go On and The Sound of Silence. You should definitely check him out! ☺️💜
i'm very glad you added in the clip from their interview. when i saw that, i just knew the whole vocal coach side of youtube would be scream 'THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING ALL ALONG!!!'
“Singing louder is harder” lol, not usually. A lot of vocalists do not understand how much air you need in soft singing. I’m willing to bet that vocalist’s softs aren’t good softs. Not to mention that tone is easier to control at a fuller on the breath style of singing.
Every vocal coach has given their reaction and perspective on the song (oceans) but in my sights you are someone distinctive. You break every part of song and provide its gist. So i want to see your reaction on taya Smith.
Whisper singing is hard! Especially if you're coming from a more technical background (as in youve had choice exp, voice lessons, etc). I think it only seems easy beacuse we normally hear it in pop songs that aren't so vocally demanding... but also the people saying that don't actually perform as vocalists.
You're right about it being what you struggle with. Some people are good at softer singing, middle singing, or belting. Some are good at two of the three, some are good at all. I just saw a video the other day where Christina Aguilera was saying that she is good at soft singing or belting, but she struggles with the middle ground. And she's an excellent singer 🤷♀️
I want a Billie jazz album fr. It works so well for her, her choices and vocal style is in that realm to my ears. Also I know you’re a busy guy but I would like for you to check out jazz artists like Laufey and Samara joy
+1 on react to Laufey!!
I definitely agree, perhaps Jazz can make a resurgence into the popular music sphere again. Laufey and Samara are wonderful artists, loved this comment :)
One of the guys on one of these old guys react videos said she sounds like she's a jazz singer when listening to Bellyache.
I thought her timing is very jazzy rather than her style. Then Finneas confirmed that in the interview about producing this song.
@@stefanfrankel8157 goddamn- do u have the link perhaps?
It’s very difficult what she’s doing, because it’s not just quiet, it’s breathy. The technique and control is beautiful.
Billie has the most incredible voice. She stands out in the crowd as she is a beautiful soul inside, and out ❤
Also Phineas has a beautiful voice that compliments Billie's so well.
Bro what? she cant even sing. Its just the whispered falsetto garbage every single time. Its talentless. I really dont agree with Tristan in this. Seems more of a fanboy reaction than a real singing critique.
Her voice is a delicate feather...floating gently down to earth..then lifted back up with the breath of wind
I love hearing that she wanted it to sound like she just cried... when I heard it for the first time I bursted out crying sooooo baaad. So I feel like she fulfilled her goal 🩷🥲
I still tear up everytime I hear it. Soooo amazing ❤

Even if she was, there is nothing wrong with how she is singing!

I already loved this song, but this performance made me love it more
The world stops spinning while she’s singing. I think everyone in the audience just lost their mind and breath listening to this. It’s just breathtaking and you forget time and everything else during this perfomance. Amazing! ❤
Tristan has finally blessed us with another Billie video thank goodness
Is nobody talking about that beautiful harmony her and Fineas has? ❤
This gave me goosebumps. She’s such a beautiful singer

Sounds like she's full gust, but suppressed voice. It's beautifully done. Watching Billie and Finneas grow as artists has been an absolute joy
Explaining her choices makes her come across as even more of a genius
Her vocal are always amazing you are so on point with this. She has said in interviews that she sings this song this way because that’s how the song was intended to be. She seems pretty passionate about it and I love that about her!

Her vision for this song was exactly on point. This song always makes me cry.

I always suspected she had more under the hood but that really confirmed it. Can't wait to see what she does next.
this song never gets old (and also never stops making me cry)

That clip of Tristan singing threw me off for a second. I always forget how beautiful his own singing voice is 💜
Definitely live! All the breaths she takes in between the phrases
BILLIE NEVER FAILS 😭❤️
this version does something to my whole entire being
I think she just gets better the older she gets which makes sense as she was a child when she started out.
I get chills every time she sings this song. ❤❤❤
Stumbled across this after the Grammy awards and it is nice to see someone illuminate the technical aspects of the world’s greatest and most variable instrument the human voice.
(Breath) Something I (breath) can be. She has to take many more breaths, but she places them so well. Stunningly beautiful live performance!

She’s so freaking talented
Billie's performance here and Reneé Rapp's performance of Snow Angel are a few of the INCREDIBLE snl performances!!

Has she ever done a cover of Somewhere Over the Rainbow? Because I feel like that would be just so beautiful ♡

she's mesmerising! Tristan do check out Corvyx, he's covered this along with many others - Celine Dion, Adele, Evanescence. You really need to look.

As a person who loves to sing and write music. This is stuck in my head. The way she sings this song is amazing. ❤

It's quite inspiring to watch how much Billie loves to sing and music.
You better react to all of her songs once her new album comes out. I love these reactions
Amazing! Billie is other worldly.
Ok but she ATE that❤
Has anyone else noticed that the white noise breathy sound she generates has an actual tone to it ? its so nuts.

Billie's very talented singing comes naturally to her. You can hear for yourselves.
Her new album drops May 17th. “Hit me hard and soft” is the title. Rolling Stone says it’s her best album yet. Can’t wait to hear it!
she was actually sick during that performance and did so well.
I like how she switched up the styles, during the second half. It's like she's crying out and it really works for the song.
