Went to school with Dave's brother. I just remember- in a school full of personalities fighting for attention, he was always the cool head. I'll have to check the schedule and see when Dave and the band are coming home.
Soul asylum.. another band of many that rode the wave of alternative and grunge led by Nirvana. As Nirvana left, so did interest in a lot of these bands. Mr Pirner is in my opinion one of the best songwriters ever. Let your dim light shine is so passed over and forgotten it's a shame. Every song on there he's telling a story, about no one yet anyone, and has so many self reflecting lyrics and contradicting meanings. " Saving up for a rainy day, it just rained, yesterday" is one of my fave lines. Too bad the industry moved on and left creative bands like this in the dust. The 90s were awesome and I want to go back. Funny thing is, you can catch a lot of these 90s bands in small venues out touring still today, as they never quit playing. Violent femmes, soul asylum, meat puppets, to name a few are still living from gig to gig like they were before the boom in the early 90s happened. Almost.. like it never happened.
I love the 86-90 period soul asylum the best. I actually thought that stuff was way way ahead of it's time.. the 92-98 stuff was damn good as well. Nirvana liked these guys (and husker and the replacements) too. Kurt says he saw them live and didn't really get it the first time but that he liked the music. He also stated in several interviews about how Minneapolis had a lot of "really good bands"
Dave: I'm a huge fan of melodic roots rock and other forms of melodic pop music. My wife and I, over many years, have been deeply moved by these "Soul Asylum songs: "Runaway Train", of course, and also "Eyes of a Child", "I Did My Best", "New World', "Bittersweeheart", "Misery", "Cradle Chain", and "The Game". Now, I know that you also love music in the harder rock vein, and I've got no complaints about that, though I can't say that is what has made me a Soul Asylum fan. But I do want to say that I hope you'll keep working in this vein, including the new tunes, including "Here We Go" and "If I Told You". Thank you so much for the feelings you've given to us over the years.
I heard this song after I losted a friend for suicide for depression... I suffer from depression too. It's hard... a continue battle with ourself. I can relate myself with this beautiful and sad song. I LOVE IT!
Gravedancers union one of the top albums of the 90s. Most people only know runaway train and though I never really get tired of hearing it, it's probably the weakest track musically. I wonder if he is even happy knowing that it will be his legacy. It did help a lot of people I suppose but there is so much deeper and introspective music he has created. Met him a few years ago, pretty cool guy.. enjoyed the video it brought back memories thank you
Dave's old, I'm old yet the music is timeless After "Runway Train" aired on MTV and VH1......some of those kids were found. 💜😇 Pirner is good; what happened to him?
I have always loved that song, it just fits my heart some how!! Every time I saw the video on MTV I’d pray that they’d find just one of the lost kids. And thinking that today, one of those kids is Madeleine Mac’cann. It breaks my heart 💔 Guess we won’t know what happened to them, until we get to heaven, and then again, we always somehow have an idea 😥
Is this the COMPLETE interview? She didn't ask about how it came about that snippet of missing children would be in the official Runaway Train music video!
I'm researching the bass riff at the end of the first chorus. Anybody know anything about where that came from? th-cam.com/video/6Ts-nGg4WlY/w-d-xo.html
See the guy has full of wisdom this what raw artist means you create your song you sing it and people of all generations will still listen to it.. unlike the shity artist nowadays all they want is money so for one song too many people try to hop on.. the artist is different the singer is different. 😕
Jesus I can't believe how much time has passed
Long Live The Spirit Of The 90s
I love Soul Asylum. I think Dave is terribly underrated. Definitely one of the best songwriters and lyricists of his era.
Runaway Train is so relatable.
As someone who has bipolar disorder/manic depression this song hits close to home at times.
Since I was a kid. This has been my life. So true.
No doubt many things do when you’re on a manic high.
I like Dave, he's an intelligent man and songwriter and still pretty underrated, he's written some excellent stuff over the years.
I love the energy of the lead singer. He's so down to earth!
He seems to be one of those truly grounded and genuinely good people.
i struggle with clinical depression! this song has helped me so many times!
Dave's old, I'm old yet the music is timeless
GreenCanvasInteriorscape I think Dave aged very well looks great
@@stevehilderbrandt9458 I agree, he's in his mid 50s.
These guys helped establish what would become Grunge in both sound and fashion.

Such a beautiful song with a purpose

I totally agree about "Let Your Dim Light Shine", that one is a horribly ignored mainstream treasure.
"Misery" is such an underrated song, same with "Hopes Up."
Blah nirvana is overrated

Yeah that's true.. I can't believe it took until 2-3 years ago to have meat puppets and soul asylum tour together
One of my favorite songs ever. I love it so damn much.

Runaway Train is a beautiful song. I still find myself singing it for no apparent reason.
