  • Gran Turismo 4 allows players to modify their cars extensively, but there is an extra step which many don’t know. Gran Turismo had an underground modding culture since its first release, where people modified cars by swapping all sorts of parts into them, these cars are called hybrids. ↓ MORE DETAILS BELOW ↓

The issue with certain engine swap combos is that the engine sound glitches out.
The reason why this happens is because the combination of engine, turbo, and muffler upgrade level (it doesn't matter which particular muffler part, just which stage it is) is missing a corresponding sound file for that combination.
The engine part specifies which sound effect to play, then the game determines which version of the exhaust sfx to play based on whether it has a turbo or is NA, and which muffler upgrade level the car has.
GT4 doesn't have a full library of engine sounds to accommodate every theoretical combination, only the combinations that are normally accessible.
So, you'll have to be aware of which combos will point to a sound effect that exists and which don't.
The only way to fix this issue is to mod the game itself, by copying missing sound files into the other folders to form a complete library of sound files

Oooh always wondered about making these in gt4! thanks for making this guide, although I fear what kinda cars could come out with this knowledge now. Like I'm thinking about what kind of engine I'd have to put into the ASL garaiya to beat LMPs...
Also I think the reason why most rally cars have low grip modifiers might be because of the lack of tire restrictions and tire wear in rally events, heavily encouraging the use of soft racing tires. Of course that means that other cars with higher grip benefit even more from that, which makes it so that unless you like driving the rally cars on tarmac (and a good number of them are super fun, imo) it just makes you want to bring those cars instead.
btw what did you mean by the comment about the celica at 9:25? I know it wasn't as good as it could be because of GT4s bias against older cars (which is a real shame because I LOVE that celica so much from playing sega rally championship, same with the lancia delta integrale) but I don't know many of the specifics outside of using it for a few tarmac rally events for fun. Also surprised you didn't mention the subaru rally car prototype 01 since that's what I hear more people say is the best rally car in the game, also surprised you didn't bring up the RS200 during the group b section because I swear the RS200 performs way, WAY worse than it should in this game. like I remember being disappointed enough in the car it made me want to learn how a lot of the tuning worked so I could at least get the street version performing decently. Then again I haven't driven the 205 so I don't know if that car had it worse

The Celica's in general (both road cars and rally cars) have cripplingly bad grip modifiers, same for the Delta Integrale, meaning they really struggle to put their power down out of corners. All of them have 95 / 95 modifiers, except the '86 ST165 Celica with 96 / 96, which is instead punished with a very high chassis stiffness. Beating the Hard dirt/snow events with them is really difficult, unless you brute-force them with NOS and turbo upgrades. The Impreza prototype is one of the best rally cars that the game gives you for free (102 / 102 grip modifiers), from a very accessible event, but the Evo Super does indeed grip better. The RS200 road car also has 95 / 95 modifiers, but the rally car has 95 / 100 which gives it better stability and rear traction despite the lack of downforce.

@@TeaKanji Oh that's extremely interesting! Thank you for telling me this is going to be very useful when I decide to make a hybrid celica(s) or delta integrale. Gotta show some respect to the sega rally champs. but also good to know it's the same with the road versions because I always wanted one because of the fantastic colors they came in
