John Haugland had 6 class wins in the RAC Rally in rear engined Skodas.....not exactly the 'occasional' class win, it was very successful, not just in the RAC Rally either.
He critizated the car,because he was not used to drive rear-engined cars too I think. The same was in USA,with the Chevrolet Carvair.Lots of americans crashed with that car,because they ingnored different physics of an rear-engined cars. Also,the accelartoin was in this Skoda. My family had 105 S,but the old model(1980) and since 1988 we have the Favorit 136. That has the same engine(but bigger and so on..) and it both had acceleration,when you really put the pedal to metal
Growing up I thought the TG presenters were knowledgeable however time has proved me wrong. The LADA is not a FIAT 124 its a complete reworking of the 124 with a new chassis and engine as well as raised ride height. The FSO is not a 125 its a 125 body mounted on the even older FIAT 1300 engine and mechanicals. Oh and the idea that the Skoda "occasionally " wins its class in the RAC rally...........that occasionally was 17 wins over 17 years
He didn't say British cars were well put together. This wasn't about British cars, it was about low cost cars. The Ladas/Polskis were pretty poor. The Yugo slightly less so, but the Skodas were quite well made as it happens.
Still rolling with a Skoda 120 L from 1984... no luxury, but it's comfortable enough and you can use it not bad for an old car. If you need more power you can upgrade the interior :)
Most of the people who bought these cars weren't rallydrivers, so they didn't need sporty handling and/or sporty engines. The main reason the bought them was to get around town in a "new" car. If i asked myself, would i mind the poor handling,or the lack of enginepower? No, not at all, there are speedlimits everywhere, and i never needed to push a car to its limits ;-) If it's good to get around in Tsjechoslovakia then it's certainly good enough for our dutch roads.....

Better than Morris Marina.From 5.gear to revers direct,strange noice after,you must change gearbox,and ruin.Skoda 105L was the best car ever, better than Land Rover Defender.
I got 1 for free in 1984 from my ex girlfriends parents...Most comfortable used car i ever owned..even today, nothing compares to how it was so comfortable...
@alejj i agree, Lada 2107 is rear wheel driven car, has everything in technical respect that other cars had. If its a bmw rearwheel setup is ooh ooh Jeremy gets a ha..anyway, these were times where russia wasn t popular (and in 2023 hmm). In fact Lada s like this one were better service able beacuse its so widely spread over the globe. Spare parts.Japanese cars should be sold in large numbers, but who knows. Its also a song, by Level42, streng genommen wäre das China. Lateron Lada s even got fuel injection. But to make an engine revv-happy, it is not just that, and why this was so important to people, i don t know. Their rust proofing was not so optimal, but if the price is that of a 6 yrs old scnd hand, that s quite a counter argument.
lol... talking about a 40 years old suspension... while the SD1 got one too...typical British, we are so special and others are not... Skoda is still there, BL or Rover are not...
The FSO 1300 was punishment motoring, absolutely no charm, an engine that was like a tractor, horrible vinyl seats and bare metal everywhere and awful build quality. It was cheap and had space for four adults, about the only good thing about the FSO.
The two stand out shockers in this video were the Lada Riva, which was dreadful, and the Skoda Estelle 105s which is one of the worst cars ever made; almost enough to put you off motoring for good!!
@Jarren202 Skodas are the worst cars and you have obviously never owned one. Fabia is not real Skoda, but Volkswagen with Skoda label. Real Skodas are dangerous poor-quality cars. I own one.

I have a mate who has 10 FSO 1300/1500S, 5 Lada Rivas, and 7 Skodas in his barn.

I had two of these, you can put your foot down and wait lol, i found them quite fun, more reliable than the VW touareg i had lol

I used to have a Skoda 105 LUX... The head gasket kept blowing, and solong as I kept a gallon of water in the back it would keep going!
