    I remember being stuck on Forgotten Crossroads for about 8 hours. Not because of game design or anything, I was just having too much fun running back and forth, getting into nooks and crannies, beating Brooding Mawlek before finding out about the False Knight, and just filling Sly's pockets, checking the Black Egg after doing anything.
    I remember at the time thinking "oh well, the game is meant to be speedrun in a few hours, so I must be near the end. Its such a sweet and wonderful game." .....then I found greenpath.
    And now I have 200+ hours on that file, and a radiant hall of gods, currently trying to get some bindings on P5.

      @RedFloyd469 2 ปีที่แล้ว +208

      They still gave the game a bad review, thereby dragging down the user score, which ultimately misinforms people to the quality of the game if they are thinking of buying it.
      Just imagine if even half of these morons would stop and think for two seconds about what a "0" actually means. The game would receive better general scores, which would mean more people would see how great it is, which would mean more people would buy it, which means Team Cherry gets more money, which means more of these type of passion project games can be made in the future.
      Unneccesarily dragging down a score because you're a memelord (or giving a positive one for a bad game, at that.) just harms the developers and misinforms consumers. Nothing "legend" about it.

      There isn't much of a story to Hollow Knight. However, it is instead full of lore. Lore and story are two different things. Lore is what happened before you start playing or when you are not at a spot. It's often told through dialogue or details/changes in details or difficulty of a spot you were in before. Story is what happens in the game as you play it... SPECIFICALLY in the area you're at. The story typically bows down to you because it is told through the gameplay and your movements or things said or done by your character specifically.
      This is not to say Hollow Knight has no story, as you can choose where you want to go and you can go pretty much anywhere, following any path and making your own story, but it is still lacking. However, the lore is where HK shines the most and it's the lore, not the story, that Mossbag and several others focus on.

    • @chrisbreeden6242
      @chrisbreeden6242 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also, I will say, lore is always the better of the two to focus on if you want to make the world feel alive. That is something some of these reviewers don't seem to understand.

      Yeah... people shouldn't play a metroidvania if they don't enjoy exploring for its own sake, getting lost, and revisiting old areas with new abilities.
      I also tried to get someone to play Outer Wilds, but they absolutely hated it because they didn't want to explore and learn and experiment. They just wanted to complete objectives and reach the end as fast as possible. They were pissed that their progress kept getting reset, and totally failed to realize that nothing had been lost. The "checkpoints" are the player's knowledge... and the only reason they weren't making progress is because they refused to pay attention or learn.

      Getting lost for a total of over 60 hours is one of the biggest reasons I love this game so much, as it’s just so refreshing to walk through the ruined kingdom of Hallow Nest with the simple but beautiful art, the ambiance in sound for anything and everything, the soundtrack that fits in to the surroundings in such a harmony of emotion that you could just explore without purpose other than to just feel for hours upon hours, the way the game grasps you into getting lost in a way where you can always find a way other that that of which you came to find your way again. I don’t have any more words to describe exactly how I feel about getting lost, and why it’s such a big part of the experience for me.

    The Knight actually does have a great memory, for exactly the reason you stated: it could explore the entirety of Hallownest, then sit down on a bench and draw a detailed map of the entire kingdom all at once. Only 1 bench is mandatory after all.
    No mind to think, lots of room to fill that little head with the memory of paths trodden and then empty it all out onto paper.
    ...the mandatory bench is obviously on the descent into City of Tears, alongside Quirrel. If you didn't sit down on that bench for a while on your first playthrough you are heartless :P

Would recommend, would not do it twice!
      And yea, the only bench for a while was at the bottom of Deepnest. Then I had to go through the ancient basin, then up to King's Station (I think I went a little bit into the kingdom's edge, hard to remember, tho). Deepnest was definitely the most terrifying part by far.

    You know, I had a similar experience that a lot of the bad reviewers described with my first play through of hollow knight (dying to nail knock back in stupid ways, getting lost, getting stuck, etc.), but the main difference between me and them is that I am a rational human being who can comprehend that some things are my fault, not the game’s. I eventually adapted to the nail knock back, I would go do something else if a boss was giving me too much trouble (cough cough lost kin cough cough), and if I, for example, never found shade cloak because I never turned on the lighthouse when I went there the first time, I would have just laughed it off as my being an idiot (definitely not based on a true story). As someone who struggled with that feeling of directionlessness: I understand that person who was second to last. I have the internal directional skills of a busted compass and there were definitely a couple times in the game where I had absolutely no idea where to go. I do still like the game because of all its other positives (solid movement & combat, good boss design outside of a couple, beautiful visuals and solid soundtrack) but that is 100% a valid feeling, though granted it's one that the Wayward Compass solves

    • @RedFloyd469
      @RedFloyd469 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Literally the first area of the game past the tutorial has a guy that sells you a map, and as you said, Wayward Compass, a charm you can get in that very same area, solves all issues with directionlessness. Best of all: it's entirely optional whether you wish to use it or not.
      Now don't get me wrong: I'm not saying I have a good sense of direction, I don't. I don't mind when a game gives you quest markers or something similar. But for Hollow Knight, there really isn't an excuse to defend this silly argument.
      Exploration is exactly what metroidvanias are all about. That's the draw. You don't have to like exploration, but then don't buy exploration games ffs. (not talking about you, I'm talking about the troglodytes writing these reviews.)

Unlocking abilities and charm hunting is definitely one of the most entertaining aspects in the game, the story is absolutely flawless. This is the same for me but for Pure Vessel. All the other bosses I beat with someone looking over my shoulder, able to analyze the bosses pattern better than I bcs I was busy dodging.
      Pure Vessel was super speedy and I couldn't find a way to react quick enough. Few days later I beat him. I was so proud I almost cried.
      Then, recently, I beat NKG in less than an hour 30 and holy crap did I realize 'I'm actually kinda good at this game' and I was super happy.
      HK actually helped me with my mental health in various ways such as giving me a good sleep schedule bcs I had to wake up at 7 to beat my brother to the xbox with enough time to beat WP or Radiance. It also helped me not get angry at myself when I fail!

      The highlight of my playthrough that first comes to mind is the nightmare king Grimm fight. The ambience, the heart in the background, the music giving it a feeling like it's a dance where one miss step means you die just feels amazing! It's so intense and fun that even though I kept getting angry and my hands started to hurt my burning urge to win and sheer enjoyment of the whole thing just made me say "okay one more try". And then half an hour later on my 20th last try I said the same thing. Improving and succeeding just felt amazing and finally beating him after so long knowing how much I had to improve and get better just made it even better. To me nightmare king Grimm shows that a burning desire to improve and succeed along with just sheer enjoyment can go a super super SUPER long way.

      @Oyou
      Graphics: It’s an art style. Just because it’s cartoonish doesn’t mean it looks like a 9 year old drew it. Backgrounds are also extremely detailed and animations are clean. Simple art style also means more people can easily draw fan art, which is something a lot of fans of the game enjoy. The darkness makes sense, you’re underground most of the time. Not dull either, I just think you’re monitor is broken.
      Music: I don’t know what to say. Maybe you just hate pianos that much. If the Greenpath, I mean…”jungle”…music drove you insane, then you probably have some other mental issue. Greenpath is the most calm and inviting theme in the entire game.
      Difficulty: The game isn’t that easy man. You saying just spam heal tells me you never got that far into the game. Plenty of bosses punish you for healing in the open, so you’re required to dodge and manage your soul in order to not die. That’s where the difficulty comes from. With your logic every game in the world is easy because “just dodge and heal”.
      Gameplay: Having a single weapon and three spells isn’t a bad thing. The reason it works so well is because your charms can augment how you play. You can build around nail arts, build around your spells, build around your dash doing the damage for you, build around nail spam which you seem to favor. Later in the game you unlock new movement abilities that alter how you approach dodging attacks. Enemy design is also consistently evolving and testing your ability to use all of your options together. It’s fun to learn how to master each skill, which is why so many people still play this game years later
      Lore: Common complaint I hear for this game and other game like Dark Souls. Yes, the story is very non-linear, but if you don’t understand the premise by the end of the game then that’s your fault. I completely understood there was an infection, I was a vessel, and vessels are the only beings that can contain the infection. By the time I defeated the Hollow Knight, I completely understood what my adventure was about without looking up a video or checking the wiki. I understand it doesn’t work for some people, but that doesn’t mean it is bad.
      Characters: The characters aren’t supposed to go on some elaborate developmental character arc. Most are side characters that the player may or may not talk to, so there isn’t enough time for all of them. Even then, Quirrel and Cloth at least get their respective arcs still. Cornifer is a map man, he sells maps. You shouldn’t expect any other development from the map guy and if you do you are just being picky. Zote is also a joke character. He exists to make you laugh, which is why he is a meme and nothing more. Hornet is a character the majority of people care about. She’s the only true child of the Pale King and serves as Hallownest’s last defender. Upon meeting you she is dismissive and thinks of you as nothing else but another stray vessel unfit to become anything more. As she follows you in your adventure she becomes less hostile and instead respects your presence. After you prove yourself she gives you the Kingsbrand and pushes you to become the next Hollow Knight. This culminates in the true ending where she flies in during the fight and helps you enter the Hollow Knight’s mind to defeat the radiance. There’s the change you begged for. It’s right there and you ignored it.
      Ergonomy: Walls that can be broken are visibly cracked and walls that can be passed through don’t have a flat wall, floor, or ceiling. Your eyes do the work and if you think you have to hit EVERY single wall you are just being stupid.
      The game is not overrated

      @Oyou bruh Celeste story is linear while hollow knight is non-linear (because metroidvaina) also the way you complained about the games art style is like complaining that iron lung looks like crap and you can make the game better on blender
      Also
      1- the is no true ending (as stated by the dev)
      2- spells do way more damage than your knife (forgot what it was called ) without charms even your knife is fully Upgraded
      3-(for the wall breaking one) have you ever played a Metroidvania because they are all like this (remember when the gow dev took hours on a single room because he didn’t know that there are breakable blocks above him the whole time )
      5- also the lore is pretty straightforward to understand once you actually look for it.
      6- isn’t there a mode in the game where you have to fight all the bosses but because it has to be in a different save file, you only have what you have at the start of the game.

However, after beating false knight, I went right instead of left (because I thought the boss was only for geo) and missed vengeful spirit. I wandered around the Crossroads for a long time, beat gruz mother, brooding mawlek, rescued sly. When I looked at the map, I thought "oh, false knight? I already went there, there's no need to go back" I literally bought everything I could from iselda, sly, and salubra. I thought one of these items was how to get to the next area. I used lantern to go to c peaks. I went through dark room, fell into r grounds, and got d nail. It took me 5 hours to beat xero, because my bench was the c peaks dark room bench. (I didn't have claw so I couldn't reach Xero from the side) I tried over and over and lost 400 geo, but I succeeded. I had no Idea what in the world I was supposed to do, so I Uninstalled. I tried to play most of it without spoiling myself of course but once I started to dread searching everywhere again I decided to go to Google
    I do sort of wish there was an optional way to see what specific rooms still have stuff hidden, because not everything has obtainable map markers like the grubs do, and there's no way I would have discovered all the breakable walls on my own, particularly the one that locks the entire Grimm storyline behind it

      @Splitcyclewastaken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Something akin to the map rooms in super metroid? that game puts a lil dot on a room that contains a secret and finding the map room fills your whole map in, thereby revealing what rooms have stuff hidden in them without actually showing you how they're hidden. Cornifer fills the purpose of the map on its own but they could have had a modified thing where you find a certain other npc within a region and if you've got the map already you can pay them to mark either one or all rooms that have secrets, or perhaps just the secrets that you can currently access. I think it is. . . maybe against the spirit of the game's focus on exploring to do so, but I could see the appeal of such a feature.
      Alternate option, something like the x-ray visor, also from super metroid, which when used on a wall will reveal if it's a normal wall or if it needs a special tool to open.

      The more you play, the better you get, even if you don't realize it. If you go to start a new file, you'll see just how much more you know and can do (or else rush to get all the upgrades :j)

      First time I played the game I gave up around after getting the Mantis claw. But recently I returned to the game because I got bored with other games and I actually Git Gud. True, I needed few tutorials on a few things, but now I am around the White Lady cocoon part, with all grubs, almost all charms (No Kingsoul tho), Two Colosseum trials and the current pain is normal Grimm

    Ok, I gotta agree with the *Buggy* part.
    Also it's really interesting how the ones who are giving negativity to HK is almost always the ones who enjoyed Ori.

      To be fair I tried out Ori after playing Hollow Knight and I quit after the tree dungeon. Didn’t like that there was so little focus on combat and when the dungeon ended with an elaborate platforming section rather than a boss battle I kinda figured that the game wasn’t gonna be for me. Even in Hollow Knight I vastly prefer the combat and exploration over the platforming. Both games are good and they’re both metroidvanias but I don’t necessarily think they will appeal to the same kinds of people.

      @@NemoTheDreamO yeah i agree with you on the art/music they are both absolutely amazing. what i found is that Ori is a nice escape game when i'm having trouble with a boss fight/level in a game. i'm currently working on path of pain and 5th pantheon for my 112% completion for HK, and i'm also playing No Man's Sky so Ori is my escape when i get frustrated with those two.
