    • IKEA Lack shelf no dri...
    In this video, I'll show you how I put up some shelves without drilling or nails into walls or studs. By using 3m Command picture frame strips, you can remove the shelf without damaging the wall. The shelf attaches via the command velcro-like strips and can easily be detached for re-positioning. The strips can then be removed from the wall without leaving any holes.
    I use this method to put action figures and other small items. Heavy items are not recommended. I estimate it can probably hold up to 5lbs of stuff.

    This is awesome!! TY!
    Another tip: 3M says that the strips are designed to be vertical and they are MUCH STRONGER that way. They suggest cutting off the tops of long strips to use them vertically instead of rotating them 90 degrees.

      @@elle1718 in the instructions on most mounting tape packaging. Probably designed that way, says to always stick vertically. In ads for 3m for example when they mount a long shelf they use a bunch of vertical strips instead of one horizontal one.

      I like to buy the largest size, and trim them if need be. That way I can use excess for additional support on heavier things if need be.

      Just get a matched quart of paint at Home Depot and a small container of joint compound. When your ready to leave the apartment repair it yourself. If you have hardwood floors, these could potentially fall off and damage the flooring, and that is a much harder and more expensive fix. Plus you will have extra paint around if you need to touch things up for peace of mind.

    Before you do this hack, do a proper assessment of the surface you are mounting the strips to. The strips are rated to hold a certain amount of weight adhered to a solid surface, but you're most likely mounting this on painted drywall. The wall surface may rip off well before the mounting strips. If you are renting, definitely make sure to take these down before someone else moves in. The next person will not necessarily know how you mounted these to the wall and they may assume its stronger than it is.

  • @noadaboa
    @noadaboa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    A couple of warnings:
    1) I ordered the shelves from the link and they look exactly the same, EXCEPT that the side meant for mounting does not have the area in the middle that would be flush with the wall as in the video. I.e., the entire side is recessed and there's nowhere to put the command strips that would be flush with the wall. I guess they changed the design. So the easiest options are to use hardware or expose the ugly mounting side to the world.
    2) Make sure your corner is 90 degrees. If both sides can't be flush with the walls then you're going to have a bad time. Many apartments and buildings have walls that are not quite at 90 degrees.

    • @alexperry9276
      @alexperry9276 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I realized this too. If you have a 3d printer you can design a corner piece to fix both the problems by re-adding the removed middle portion of the shelf then adding a bit of chamfer so if your walls are not perfectly at 90 degrees you can add a few degrees.

    No one ever mentions how expensive these strips are.

    • @omgwtfbbqstfu
      @omgwtfbbqstfu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      because its the wrong thing to use regardless, the entire point of the strip is its removability, which requires you to stretch it using the tab like chewing gum so it loses its grip, so the tabs have to stick out, and the strips can't be nailed.
      When his shelf fails its going to pancake world trade tower style, its just a bad idea.
      Plus the adhesive strip rating is for weight pulling straight down from a hook, the levering force of a shelf reduces the hold rating to nothing. Any double sided tape strong enough to make this work would cause more damage to your wall than a screw would.

    This seems like a nice idea and never thought of it. Just moved into an apartment and there is no holes that can be put in the wall so no nails. Back in 2015 I went to Japan but ended up getting a good amount of figurines when I went to the arcade when it started raining when I had no coat or umbrella. Now that I have my own place I have been thinking about displaying them just for the hell of it. This may work for my project as the figures are not that heavy and there is only 4 small ones and 3 normal size ones.

      @KenVersus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely give it a try. Ideally, just use nails if you're allowed to. I don't like to drill or nail things on walls so the 3M command stuff works for me. But I don't put heavy things. Check out my 1 year update video showing it's still up.

    Your LACK shelves are different than the ones I have here. The ones I have do not have that middle piece therefore don’t have a place where the tape can be placed on the non colored side :/

    Hi, I like the idea but how are you going to remove it? it will be nice if you can make a video about that too..because I don't see any extra tag popping out to pull the 3M strip.

    • @KenVersus
      @KenVersus  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Bee Creatiwe hi the command strips I link to in the description has the round tabs that you pull to remove them.

    • @beecreatiwe5068
      @beecreatiwe5068 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, I use command strips all the time and I am wondering how you are going to remove the lack shelf without damaging the wall...To remove the shelf neat and clean, you have to slowly pull the tab ( usually popping outside and visible) parallel to the wall. But this is a very nice video..i like it!

      @KenVersus  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bee Creatiwe I love command strips too and try to find unique ways to use them.

    • @amandaducharme91
      @amandaducharme91 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are the picture strips. They are almost like Velcro. You attach one side to the shelf and one to the wall and you can remove and reattach. The strips are hidden when they are together but when you pull them apart you have access to the pull tabs. I use them at home and really like them.

    what do you think about 3 or 4 books in each shelf or a small pot plant? do you think would hold?

    • @etutorials7569
      @etutorials7569 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shangas0 I used the strips to tape a huge heavy mirror on my wall and It’s still stuck to the wall. I’ve had it for about 2 years now and it never falls. I think a small pot plant would be fine and it wouldn’t fall. But heavy books could potentially loosen them so you should test it out with a light book first.

    • @KenVersus
      @KenVersus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the books are paperbacks and wouldn't hurt you if it fell. Some with pot plant. The dirt will be a mess. Mine are still up since the posting of this video.

    Yeah but when you pound those in they still don't look very stable, thats why the shelf has holes on the back to make it more secured on the wall....

    As a landlady this is literally my nightmare. As someone has said remove and repair walls before you go because this type of thing cost me a ton on repair work when my last tenant moved out. I’d told them not to drill and they had sticky tape and glue holds on so many walls. All the lining paper ripped off and it cost me hundreds to fix.🤬

      Not if you put literally nothing on them like this guys does. The shelves themselves don't weigh much, so if you don't load the shelves with anything, they'll be fine.

    I bought an ikea lack shelf and noticed it doesn't have that little chunk in the middle that you can nail the 3m strips into. Is there different kinds of lack shelves? I got the exact same square white looking one but the back part just looks different.

    • @KenVersus
      @KenVersus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. I think the newer ones have a gap now. you'll have to add a piece of wood to make it thicker. Some reason Ikea changed it.
