    Radiology captures me on how analytical and knowledge based it is. My knee was improperly diagnosed by a radiologist who missed damage in my knee that took another year to find out. I don't want anyone to have to go through what I did, and to get the info and treatment that would help them most. I feel like becoming a radiologist I can help the most people daily by reading scans and correctly reading them to then decide what treatments may be possible to improve their life. I'm 23 about to be 24. Excited about the possible future.

    Upon extensive reading and research, I have interventional radiology on top of my list (despite the procedural conflict between them and the vascular surgeons/interventional cardiologists). I definitely wanna look into anesthesiology too (due to my background in airway management and years of experience as a pharmacy tech). From my experience working in the critical care and ER (as a respiratory therapist), I'm very confident surgery or Internal Med isn't my thing: but these videos are super helpful.. like crazy how you bring "seemingly abstract" stuff to reality to clarify things.

    Just discovered this video! Amazing. Currently a rising 3rd year. Taking my Step 1 in about a month, and starting rotations soon after. I have a strong anatomy background and have been considering radiology for some time now. What advice do you or Dr. Adair have for 3rd year students interested in the field? What can I do to stand out on my rotations?

    • @antoniowebbmd
      @antoniowebbmd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Awesome! Thanks for watching and welcome to the family:) Great question. I would say go into every rotation with an open mind. You will change your mind a few times about which specialty. Ask a lot of questions. Find a mentor in that particular field (someone who is going through it with you, someone in residency and someone out of residency-so you can get all 3 perspectives.) Otherwise, be yourself, work hard, show up early and stay late! Good luck, make sure to subscribe and let me know if any other questions arise!

    • @ladair01
      @ladair01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rotations in radiology were very tricky as they are really a showcase of your emotional intelligence and willingness to be there rather than your knowledge of radiology. I think this is changing more and more as we are starting to see medical schools integrate anatomy with radiology. Standing out in radiology rotations actually means blending in. How well do you fit with the "culture" of the department? Doing research on a case that your attendings found interesting or some of the radiology residents were discussing and putting together a brief presentation on the topic would be great. Giving a presentation on a part of the anatomy that residents find cumbersome (i.e. the brachial plexus or the Couinauds liver segments) is always appropriate for a medical student.

    • @ladair01
      @ladair01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I work 40 hours a week generally, but I cover weekends about 8-10 weeks out of a year. weekends shifts are 8 hours per day. Some radiologists prefer to work 9 hours/day and 7 days per week with every other week off. This is called the week on/week off schedule. The schedules in radiology typically mimic the providers we work closely with, but for the most part, it is shift work and when we are off, we don't carry pagers. When we are on, we are busy.

      Erhardt Gerber, we interpret the ultrasounds. Ultrasound technologists perform them. There are radiologists and physician extenders such as PAs and NPS locally in the hospital and outpatient to perform procedures

    Hello Dr. Webb! Too much physicians talk Diagnostic Radiology will die as a specialty soon and most diagnostic radiologists are going into interventional radiology. What do you think about it?

    • @ladair01

      There is a shortage of radiologists currently because, it seems, many students have taken this approach to fearing the future of the field. In short, because radiology is heavily technology based, it will need to change quickly in the future to accomodate patients and clinicians. Radiology and other dignostic fields will soon be augmented by machine learning and artificial intelligence, but not replaced. I have, in fact, been working to design algorithms and train computers to be able to detect lesions and assist in our day to day worklflow since 2016. I see the future of diagnostics merging as data becomes more malleable and as we are able to apply the technology to rapidly use it real time. For example, it would be really fun if we could understand about certain risk factors as we are viewing a patients CT scan based on all of the diagnostic information we have available about them (pathology, blood tests, lifestyle factors). This could be revolutionary in iteration and learning real time as opposed to waiting for studies to be published and clinical trials to be accomplished. Remember, there is nothing on the planet that rivals the potential of the human mind. There are many things that can augment it.

      @Mr Forex The only way to become a board-certified diagnostic radiologist is to go to college for 4 years and do premed coursework - then take the MCAT, medical school for 4 years - then take the USMLE tests, and residency for 5 years as we are either Medical Doctors (MD) or Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) - then take the American Board of Radiology examinations to become board certified. Doing a fellowship is optional, but now almost all radiologists receive subspecialty training - there is an additional certificate of added quality that some subspecialists receive as well (CAQ).

      @@ladair01 Dr. Adair, thank you for taking the time to interview for Dr. Webb's video it was extremely helpful to hear as a 3r year med student. Do you predict design algorithms and AI altering the demand of radiology to the point where it would significantly affect the job market in the near future?

    Dr. Adair, The American Dental Association (ADA) recently introduced dental radiology as a new specialization. Do you think this a financially viable career option? Would you hire a dental radiologist as a partner in a medical radiology practice like yours?

    • @maxib.3205

      M M Dental radiology? You mean oral maxillofacial radiology?

    • @ladair01
      @ladair01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a great question. I would totally hire a dental radiooigist if we had contracts at hospitals that required this service. Veterinarian radiology is a subspecialty as well. It would all depend on the needs of our clinical partners and contracts.

      Hi first you would need to do the pre reqs for medical school which are usually chemistry, biochemistry, physics, Calc and stats, etc and then take the MCAT. After that, most people are ready to apply. You will need letters of recommendation and a personal statement

    • @ladair01
      @ladair01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dj Civil you would want to take the basic medical courses General Chemistry, Biology, Organic Chemistry, and Physics and the Medical College Admissions Test.

    I was hoping to get some straight to the point answers with this video, but this man just talked and talked and talked! Helpful information, but a whole lot of filler it’s pointless stuff about himself. We don’t care about who you are and what you’re doing we just like to know what we have to do to get we’re we’re going!

      Orthopedics is more hands on however there is telemedicine that is on the forefront and I'm looking forward to seeing where that goes, specifically for ortho

      After a lot of trial and error I’ve built a home based orthopedic surgery practice. The dishwasher is actually a decent steam sterilizer. I’ve confirmed one of my long held suspicions: all the “spirometry” and monitors anesthesia uses are just fake bells and whistles. They’re fakers. Jim Beam keeps them out just as good if not better.

      I'm not an expert in this, but it is possible as I saw students from the Caribbean schools get into radiology by doing well on their USMLE and doing impressive senior clerkships in various radiology departments. They worked hard and proved to clerkship directors that they were sure about doing radiology and that they were capable learners.

    how many hours are your shifts?

    • @ladair01
      @ladair01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are 8 hours, but some can be up to 9 or 10 depending on how many days in a month you want to work. Our shifts in teleradiology began mimicking those of the highest volumes in the hospital and were similar to the Emergency Departments shifts. However, there is an increasing need for shifts during all times in the hospital presumably due to the increased amount of patients in the healthcare system now and the shortage of radiologists.
