    This is really neat. I love historical stuff, and my favorite type of history is the "what was this like in the past", and this video fits nicely. Also, what a great job of restoring the photos by Mr. Zeman's granddaughter.

    I as born in 1952. Every year we would go to South Range to visit Grandma in the summer. One year it was snowing at the ferry docks. I remember the towers standing alone orange in the straits. I have crossed countless times and loved it every time!

    What a great tribute to the men who built one of the great wonders. Also a fitting tribute to my father, Fuzzy (Darl) Hawley Ironworkers 340, I know he worked stringing the suspension cables for American Bridge. Thank you for sharing with the world.

    I was stationed at K.I.Sawyer near Marquette, MI. I got out of the service in 1979. Graduated from NMU 12/83 as a Medical Technologist. I loved the Upper Peninsula. Loved it. Did my internship in Escanaba MI. I now live in Richwood WV. but I’am doing my best to get my grandson up for a road trip next summer when he graduates as a RN with A BSN & minor in Community Health:-)🙏🇺🇸😎

      The bridge authority was appointed in June 1950. They had to pick an engineer, make plans and blueprints, and sell bonds to pay for it all. Construction began May 7th 1954. The bridge was open to traffic November 1st 1957. This is from the book I have.

    This bridge is the Golden Gate of the Great Lakes. Am I the first one to use this phrase? Sometimes I think I got gypped. The Golden Gate’s main suspension tables are 36 inches wide. The Mighty Mac’s are only 24 inches. Can an engineer out there tell me why this is ? 😊

    • @GH-oi2jf
      @GH-oi2jf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Southwell - That’s incorrect. The Verrazzano Narrows bridge was designed by Othmar Amman. The Mackinac bridge was designd by David Steinman and it is his masterpiece. Steinman also designed the St. Johns bridge in Portland, Oregon.

      It's very windy in the straights, this keeps the bridge stable. Do a search here on youtube of Tacoma Narrows Bridge and you can understand why the Mighty Mac was designed this way.
