My Grandfather was an iron worker in Seattle and worked on many of the high rise buildings. Some of the photos he took are beyond breathtaking. Going to work every day 10 hours per day in all types of weather and wind doing what he did for 30 years is absolutely astounding.

I drove over the bridge in 2013 when my mom and her husband got married on mackinaw island. I was looking at the bridge the whole 2 days I was on the island, so when I was leaving I had to drive across the bridge first, And I never knew I had to pay a toll on the way back lol but it was totally worth it! Plus I didn't have much choice cuz how else would I have gotten back lol. But I had to drive across because I love bridges and the way they're constructed especially over water blows my mind!

A marvelous testiment to the brilliant mind of designer Dr. David B Steinman & the brave workers who made it a reality.. & of course the Mackinac Bridge Authority who maintain it today.

I grew up in Michigan and am old enough to remember the ferry rides we took in the summer to reach the Upper Penn. So, we were among the first to cross the next summer, after completion, on the bridge.

I was born and raised in the U.P. but my parents were both trolls, so all the relatives lived below the bridge. In June of 56 we moved to Alaska for 4 yrs when we returned mom was all excited to see the new Bridge, it was under construction when we left. I remember dad just hating to pay the 5 dollar toll fee to cross. Yrs later as an adult I realized that the average wage was something like 1.25 an hr in 1961 so that was like 4 hrs of work to pay that fee! Youch! Today I maken20 dollars an hr so the equivalent would be like 80 dollars to cross. No wonder dad hated that fee. I rode with him in his semi truck in May of 1974 across the bridge. Cost 22.00 dollars
