Japan now, absolute top quality. Anyone familiar with Japanese production knows that. I've seen grocers in Japan throw out supposedly damaged produce, but I could see no blemishes or flaw at all.

Japan proved to the world that they could match American craftsmanship with their Ibanez AR series guitars back in the 70's. They were often dubbed 'Les Paul Killers'. I own two and used to own two Les Paul's. I'd rather have Japan making these Winchesters than ANY other country over there for sure.

I can’t say enough good things about the quality of my Miroku made Winchester 1873 Carbine. It’s an amazing rifle. I say that with a half dozen Connecticut made Winchester’s. Four of which are pre-64 guns. I’d be honored to shake the hands of the men who built my ‘73 Saddle Ring Carbine. A lot of heart was put in my rifle.

The Miroku company goes back to about 1893, if I remember correctly. They made harpoon guns for whaling at one point, big deck-mounted swivel guns. The company seems to suffer from amnesia regarding the WW2 era, but you can bet they were producing military arms like crazy then. In the 1950's, once they were allowed to make civilian guns again, they started producing a copy of the Browning over/under shotgun and also double-action revolvers for police use and export.
Around the late 1960's and early 1970's Browning's production costs in Belgium were getting too high, and they were looking around for other options. Obviously they would have been aware of the Miroku copies, and that led to a deal. During the 1970's more and more of Browning's production switched to Miroku; in some cases the machinery was packed up from Belgium and shipped to Japan. This was a period where some John Browning descendants were still involved with the Browning company.
The main Miroku plants are in Nankoku city, on Shikoku, which is the smallest of the main islands of Japan. While the Citori and Cynergy shotguns and the BLR have been produced in Nankoku, there is another plant at the town of Yusuhara, up in the mountains of Shikoku, which has concentrated on the traditional lever-action rifles.
The BPS shotgun production has been in a completely different region of Japan. Muzzleloaders have also been produced. The company is actually quite large, with other branches that produce deep hole drilling machinery, produce wood parts (steering wheels and shifter knobs) for Toyota, and even something to do with a type of pressure-treated wood.

The Japanese have always had an understanding of metallurgy and Morku uses very high quality steel. They are also very fastidious about the quality of the firearms they produce. Nothing wrong with them at all.

I recently purchased a Marlin 1895 SBL for 1k and it malfunctions 50% of the time. I have made a warranty claim. The guys at the range said it has to do with the safety moves when you fire it making it impossible to operate the lever action. So disappointing and frustrating. I have a Winchester 1873 (japan) coming this week. I expect it to be much more rewarding. Thanks hickock45 for all the great content.

If Oliver Winchester could have cheaply manufactured overseas in the 1800s and sold rifles around the world he would have done it, because he was a business man first. He saw a firearms target market opportunity and he produced a product to corner that market. We live in a global economy today and it is what it is. If you want a new version of this rifle go with the Japanese manufactured rifles. It's still a Winchester...period. If you want a well made product that emulates the rifle of the 1800s go with the Italian manufactures. Either way, I'm glad they are being produced.

  • @firefightergoggie

    John,
I'm pretty much sold now on getting a Miroku. I did something stupid when I was a farm kid growing up on a dairy farm in Upstate NY. Poking through an unused spare bedroom closet in our big old farmhouse, I discovered a Winchester 1873 long gun in 38-40 cal. standing in the corner in at least 85-90% condition. I loved that old gun, left there um-teen decades ago by a grandparent or great uncle. This was in the mid-1950s. Turns out the firing pin was broken.
Now for the sad part. A school chum had purchased a $15 WWII war surplus Italian 6.5 Carcano Carbine. It shot, and my 1873 didn't. How stupid I was, allowing myself to be taken advantage of. I was offered an even-up trade, with a box of 6.5 war ammo thrown in. I was happy and stupid while the other guy was happy and smart. At least the Carcano shot, I reasoned, having plugged a woodchuck offhand at around 50-60 yards the first time I took it out.
Being a gun lover I'm now a small-time enthusiast-collector and have been wanting to replace that old gun for a while now. I considered a good used one, but they're pricey. I then considered the Uberti 1873, but heard negative things about fit and finish. I appreciate Japanese workmanship as a own a Japanese-made Ithaca 12ga. O&U. It's settled. I'm way more enthused about getting a quality Miroku in 45 LC. Besides, it's got "Winchester" stamped on the barrel. I've shot 45 LC in my son-in-law's S&W Governor and I like the cartridge. Your thoughts?
    R.M.
PS: Love your dad's and your YT channel.

I started getting into firearms about 12 months ago and am only now finally at the point where I will be able to get my firearms licence. I'm a guitar player by trade and over my time as a guitarist I have come to really love japanese made guitars, even in some cases over the legendary American made guitars. I have no doubt that the Japanese are more than capable of making a quality firearm. Hopefully soon I'll be able to try one out for myself.

I use to knock Japanese made Winchesters....until I actually handled and shot one. Now I own two. The golden days of New Haven Winchesters are gone forever. If anything, Miroku improved the quality of these guns from what they were when they were last made in America. You're not going to beat Japanese precision at milling steel parts. Miroku's QC is very anal about the tolerances of their production. A lot of the steel, and all of the walnut for the furniture, is still sourced from the United States.

I have got to stop watching this channel. I already had to go and buy a Sig Sauer Elite stainless in 10 mm because of these guys and now this. A new lever gun without a safety. Who could have ever imagined in this day and age. Awesome

2000 views per hour - pretty impressive. No gun lovers here......LOL

"Ewww Jap rifle! No way." Good Lord, don't all you commenters know that katanas are from Japan? That the Arisaka action is incredibly strong, and the rifles were high quality up until the last ditch modifications? Their metallurgy has been excellent for hundreds of years, and their electronics for decades.

My Moruku Winchester 73 in .357 MAG is beautiful and shoots wonderful, a little to the the right at 100 yards but I could move the rear sight if I cared enough or put Marbels peep sights on. Wood is a little proud but does not effect shooting. Quaility probably exceeds originals and European copies. Sweet lever action rifle.

Finn here. Thinking of finally starting up a target shooting hobby after the lockdown lifts, aiming for one of these of my own. Should take me a year of going to a range to have adequate justification for a firearm of my own. Have to start with .22s, but I'm aiming on getting up to .357 Mag. Another year, and there should be adequate justification to have a handgun. A .357 Mag lever-action and revolver would save me on ammo costs and allow me to do rifle and pistol shooting.

mine is an Uberti from Navy Arms... in 44-40 with 30" barrel. It is a hoot to go out and plink with. It is the 'sportsman' meaning it has pistol grip and checkering.

I would not have a problem buying a rifle from Japan. If they are producing quality rifles, I am glad that they are manufacturing these grand old models and making them in a way that is respectful to the heritage of the old west.

i have a '73 .44-40 made in 1883. been in the family at least since the 1920's. still works fine but if i'm shooting a lot i shoot my Miroku made '73 in .44-40. it's a very nice rifle.

  • @348loadedlever3
    @348loadedlever3 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Miroku high grade browning are very nice and show what fit and finish can be, but that comes at a cost. You can still find new high grade lever browning rifles (without the silly safety crap) for not much more money than that new 73. The lever videos are my favorite.
