  • Children in traumatic environments disconnect from overwhelming distress in order to survive. Once they become adults and having survived, traumatized individuals are left with only a fragmented, confusing sense of what happened. Traumatic reminders continue to keep the trauma ‘alive’ by repetitively re-activating the stress response system and survival defenses. Unaware that these reactions are traumatic memories held in the body, they assume that they are still in danger or somehow at fault.

I like how she mentioned "overreactions." I've learned that overreactions are a result of the fight-flight-or-freeze survival response condition from childhood trauma...understanding this helped me get rid of the shame or guilt that resulted from the response. I took learning to set boundaries, journaling every day, and doing mindfulness (I used a nice little book called "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels, and the Tao Te Ching) to slow my response enough to observe my thoughts. Many of the times the responses we have are a result of our old child self still trying to find safety and survive...we can now tell the child it's ok, we've got this.

So what to do with the parts. How to diminish them? Other than figuring out the relationship, we need some tools.

FYI. The host speaks very loud and seems to be quite close to the microphone, while the speaker is soft spoken and is probably farther away from the microphone. About blew my eardrums out because I turned the volume up to hear the guest and then the host belted out something. Please be aware for future utubes
