    Jax has layers. If you look at his facial expressions when Ragatha mentions the funeral service you can see a bunch of emotions play across his face. Including sadness/regret before he leaves.
    Probably doesn't want to show the other members of the Circus that he cares and he just wants to grieve alone.

      Yeah, I agree that Jax is most likely detached because of the reality he’s in. He indulges in the chaos because of nihilism and probably embellishes the godlike power of immortality if he doesn’t abstract. Still, his arc probably has more weight if he does grasp the importance of making honest connections, because the funeral is remembrance that keeps us from fading away or falling into the abyss like Pomni feared. Jax doesn’t want to abstract either and would probably not want to be forgotten, that’s why he acts out so violently. Or he’s got chaotic game Brain.

      I have a sneaking suspicion Jax is someone who played video games a lot in his regular life and was really into competitive shooters and things like Doom so he just sees this as a videogame going "ya none of this is real and I can be as violent as I want" but he does actually have emotions he just hides them because the world is fake so why should he have to be real? Tldr videogames is probably his escape and he probably doesn't want to be real at all

    Cane is 100% an AI. He knows of things from the real world but lacks any surrounding context to know how the main cast would feel about it. That's why he treats drowning like a a fun activity in the first episode. He also does other weird things a learning program would do, like treat "XDDCC" like a valid name option, or apply descriptors like "humanoid" to things that very clearly don't reflect it.

      Sometimes things aren't meant to be analyzed and are just a joke. This might be one of those times. While the first episode does have mysteries and some of those things cain does is a nod to him being an AI and not understanding certain things. Some things aren't meant to be over their place as a joke. Especially because it was a pilot episode. The humor is more prevalent in the first episode than it is in the second.

    I love that it took a funeral to make Pomni care about the others and see that they care about each other. It shows how death helps people find the beauty of life and I also love the way it’s symbolised by the four of them pulling her up as they are giving her reason to stay in the circus

    • @bungiecrimes7247
      @bungiecrimes7247 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      True. Even though the agony of theose who are abstracted is probably eternal.. (yikes), a funeral really adds a proper finality to whatever his character even was.

    • @RothAnim
      @RothAnim หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It also makes for a very thematically tight story. If you consider Pomni's perspective in the pilot, Kaufmo's abstraction and disposal was treated with almost a shrug. Between that and Ragatha's attempts at perpetual positivity must have made it look like her own eventual death would be treated with the same casual attitude. Talking to Gummigoo helped her externalize her own fear of being forgotten, only for Caine to yank it all away with the same indifference as he had with Kaufmo, and Ragatha trying to smooth it over again. The funeral made her realize how much Kaufmo actually mattered to them, and helped her realize that she could matter to them too.

    • @YuyuHakurei
      @YuyuHakurei 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Might be over analyzing it a bit. It was that she couldn't see them as being on the same side before. She thought everyone was in it for themselves. It was just the funeral that taught her that it isn't the case and not everyone is like Jax. The person she interacts with the most in the first 2 episodes. The symbolism is that the relationship she was trying to have with gummigoo could have been with these real people instead. She was only initially shocked that he got vaporized. She didn't actually care in the same way kaufmo abstracting.
      It was kinda a parody lesson you see in kid shows. This one was teaching you that you don't need to put your feelings into an npc over the real people you have available to you. It's probably not a very good lesson considering there are people in reality who have no real people available to them, but it works in the constraints of the show. Although it is sort of a parody moment. Not all parodies are done for humor. Of course I'm only assuming so considering this is really the first real episode. Pomni is still not in the opening song yet so maybe we'll find out by then if this is a normal thing or a parody.

      It's not really anything new though. It's a pretty common trope in psychological horror. It might just be the first time they dropped every variation of it into the same story at once. It also kind of parallels the situation they are in. They don't know if they are real either. They haven't actually remembered anything specific from their former life yet. Sometimes series like to foreshadow things super obviously so you can look back after watching the whole thing and see that they were hinting at certain things the whole time.

      It makes sense that he was so off in episode one too - he's the first person to sound the alarm about something being seriously wrong with Kaufmo; the others just take it in stride that he didn't bother to leave his room that day, but Kinger is nervously hiding (which seems the best way to stay safe from an abstraction until Caine has the chance to deal with it), he refuses to go see Kaufmo himself, and warns the others that his mental state has taken an alarming turn recently. Kinger's been there for a very long time after all, he's seen a LOT of people abstract, so he knows the warning signs. Kinger's not usually as out of it as the first episode suggested; Pomni (and the audience) just... happened to meet him on a bad day.
      In this episode, the Kaufmo situation is handled, nobody else has warning signs of abstraction, and so Kinger's got it together a lot more, now that he's not trying to cope with a very active stressor. His 'crazy' moments in this episode also only really occur in the context of the adventure, which makes sense! He's been here a long time, he knows the adventures can't have real consequences, and so instead of getting emotionally invested, he's just messing around and having fun with it, like Jax. Just... Kinger's idea of having fun involves him amusing himself with silly antics, while Jax's idea of having fun is trying to raise as much hell as possible.

    I really love how they tied together the episode by removing Pomni’s fear of being forgotten. With her dream you can really tell that’s what scared her most about being abstracted, that she’d get put into the pit and nobody would remember her. At the end, seeing Kaufmo’s funeral, it put into perspective that they all truly care when they lose someone, wrapping back to her in the pit. It wasn’t just Ragatha’s hand, it was all of them. She realizes then and there that she won’t be forgotten. Perfect narrative example of show, don’t tell

      Jax still does care to some extent though. If you pay attention to him he's actually keeping Pomni somewhat sane. While he does screw with her a little he also tells her what she needs to know and face. His straight forward approach is the most effective for getting someone out of initial depression and functioning as a potential team mate faster. He also is very capable during adventures and takes charge very quickly.
      I don't think we have seen the full premise of the show yet because we don't actually know what is causing people to abstract. Like sure the situation is pretty bad, but we don't fully know the rules around adventures and nothing shown yet gives us the full picture of why people have a reason to suddenly freak out. What we've seen is pretty chill and people would just get used to it and stop caring. So there has to be a deeper reason and maybe something cain does from time to time that makes people abstract more than what was shown here.
      We haven't really seen a bad day yet. Like we've seen a day where bad things happen. We haven't seen a day where everyone hates each other, is yelling at each other, not cooperating at all, and fighting each other. Things could get much worse.

    While watching this reaction, I thought of something that could partially explain Jax's behavior. Sometimes, video game makers will sometimes hire someone to intentionally try and break the game. Their job is to try and do things that the developers did not think of, and see if it causes any glitches, bugs, or even crashes. I am guessing that this is why the person who became Jax was brought in. It would literally be his job to do the craziest, most outrageous things possible, and see what happens.

      @@stray_editori When Caine mentions confusing humans with NPCs, he seems shaken after saying "who knows what could happen" as if he's remembering something. The beginning and the end are pretty cool because in the beginning pomni was falling and the others were acting like they didnt care...and in the end they showed they care deeply when someone abstracts so they pulled her back up while she was falling this time showing that they do care about her.
    I think when pomni was talking with the crocodile about feeling like nothing matters, she was referring to her past self as well, and now she found something that DOES matter to her

    My favorite scenario is that Gummigoo comes back in a future adventure without his memories at first. Pomni understands he is not the same only for him to take her out of bounds to reveal that (while he was reset, his AI is so advanced that he remembered the experience of his previous existence).
    However, Princess Loo operates on the same AI system and (after being reset) has started remembering how these “heroes” abandoned her people to be eaten by Fudge.
    As such, Princess Loo secretly wants to get revenge on Jax and the others. Meanwhile, Gummigoo and Pomni agree to have secret meetings in areas Caine cannot see. He will not be a part of the circus, but he will be an ally to Pomni.

    I think the reason Ragatha is struggling to befriend Pomni is because although she’s trying to make her feel welcomed, at the same time, she’s kinda sugar coating or downplaying the Pomni’s and maybe by extension the other’s situation by constantly trying to “see the bright side.” Or trying to hype her up for the adventures and try to distract her from the negativity when Pomni is still trying to process everything. Pomni is trapped, possibly for eternity, with no memory of her past life or who she left behind. You can’t make just cheer up someone by being overly optimistic. Pomni needed to work out and talk about her emotions, feel how she felt, something she was able to do with Gummigo and not Ragatha. Ragatha puts on this facade of being positive, she’s not being honest. but I think Pomni can see through it. I feel Ragatha knew what was gonna happen to Gummigo, but just didn’t say anything to not make things awkward. And after it happened, her response was “I’m sorry, at least you tried.” In a way that sounds as if Pomni lost a game. She means well, but she’s not really helping her with this bright side attitude

    My theory on Jax is that he creates chaos to distract him from the reality that he is trapped from his real life, and that he does care about the others, he just acts like he doesn't. It looked like he was sad, or regretful before walking away from the funeral. My guess for this is that he had a friend in the circus, who abstracted. The moment Ragatha said something about remembering the people who abstract, his eyes kind of widened a bit before he rolled his eyes.

    I also have a theory of why Jax is such an asshole. My theory is that he’s actually been in the Circus the longest, not Kinger. Jax has been stuck at the circus for so long that he’s accepted ages ago that he can never escape and possibly already lost a lot of his friends to abstraction to the point that Jax has become more numb to his emotions and is the way he is now as maybe a means to cope with it all by putting up this go with the flow, tough guy facade. Jax is the way he is because that’s the reality that he and the others are forced to live in. He’s seen too much. But that’s just a theory of mine, nothing more.

    I view Ragatha as a chronic people pleaser which is why she goes so out of her way to cheer up and encourage the others no matter what. Unfortunately this can cause the same effect that the character Joy had in inside out. Sometimes what people need is to be sad to get through what they need to. However, Ragatha’s way of coping is lying to herself that everything is fine. Which inadvertently causes her to lie to the others as well. She seems to still be upset about pomni ditching her but instead of communicating that,she instead tells herself that it’s fine and that she’s not upset. One person can only lie to themself for so long so I’m expecting her to SNAP eventually

    He always pretends to be compliant to Caine, even if after he doesn his own thing. He never wants to go directly against him.
    His disregard for other people's feeling and everything in general might be because he discovered he's not a human like the others, so he thinks everything is meaningless.

    I love the little layers with Pomni's abstraction nightmare and the brief callback to it near the end. In the nightmare, the ones looking down at her with total apathy are Caine, being the big frontrunning brain of all the digital craziness and the entity Pomni views as responsible for it all; Ragatha, who Pomni likely thinks resents her for her panicked abandonment in the first episode for an exit door; and Jax because... well, I don't think I need to explain that one. In Pomni's view, none of them would care if she abstracted and was locked away and lost to the dark, alone and forgotten.
    But at the end with seeing them come together in the impromptu funeral service they put together for Kaufmo, Pomni starts to see past the wacky craziness and observe that these people do genuinely care for one another sort of like they were a family and that her past thoughts and fears simply just weren't warranted. In the little callback to her nightmare, not only Ragatha's hand but Kinger's, Gangle's, and even Zooble's (despite not having had much interaction with her so far over these two episodes) hands all extend to save her from her fall. Of course Jax and Caine are both conspicuously not there in that brief moment, for obvious reasons.
    As for Jax... I know I'm walking on eggshells a little bit with him because apparently there's some stupid drama surrounding his character (leave it to Twitter to ham it up, am I right?), and to be fair I will say I have noticed a pretty big shift in his actions being way more abrasive, chaotic and downright mean-spirited (and that's being fairly generous) here as opposed to in episode one where he was just kind of smarmy troll. However, I don't think it's a full-on character change like some are claiming; some of his behavior here feels very much forced, and I think they were going for that intentionally - like he's putting up a front or using these ramped-up acts of chaos as a coping mechanism. And honestly, in the grand scheme of things while I can't commend his actions here by a long-shot, remember that everything they encountered in that little adventure is just a construct set up by Caine (that he was probably going to dismantle and pack away at the end anyway) so for the most part the results of Jax's actions are pretty inconsequential. That aside, I came across a bit where someone equated his behavior to an example of the different stages of grief, where he seems to be going through the "Anger" stage right now. Even before he goes off on his own before Kaufmo's funeral, you can see a moment where his whole smarmy, jerkish attitude kind of cracks for a moment and we see what looks like genuine sadness, possibly regret.

    That bit with Pomni telling Ragatha "I'm not a child, you don't have to hype me up" really hit me in a way I don't think many other people did. Most people seem to react to that with a chuckle or "mood", but my initial reaction was that it was surprisingly blunt and dismissive from Pomni, given that she evidently had a nightmare of no one really caring if she abstracted and even later on said "I could use a friend" to Gummigoo, even though Ragatha has been actively trying to be friendly to here in both these episodes. The more I thought about it, though, the more I thought about the possibility that Ragatha is just trying too hard and winds up being overbearing with how constantly positive and enthusiastic about things, which could potentially get tiresome, especially if you're REALLY not into what you're doing right now. In this case, Pomni seems... less than enthused about the whole "adventure" thing in general, and Ragatha's comment about them being friends with the princess can come off as a bit patronizing, so her line about not needing to be "hyped up" is a bit more understandable in that context. Not to mention, given that she had to outright ask if Gummigoo was OK after, you know, telling him that his entire existence is based on playing the role of a villain to be defeated in a game made specifically for short-lived entertainment. She seemed to be more focused on trying to get out of there than what he's going through, which coupled with her disregarding/not noticing Ragatha's attempts to be friends with her, suggest to me that Pomni is really not good at reading people emotionally, not to mention she tends to prioritize her own concerns over others unless directly confronted with other's problems. Still, the fact that she had a genuine heart-to-heart moment with Gummigoo does show that she is capable of empathizing with others, when given the opportunity. I just find Pomni's character flaws fascinating, in that she's definitely not a bad person, but not exactly the nicest person either, even if her not-nice qualities are mostly unintentional and born of thoughtlessness. At the very least, at the end of the episode, she comes to realize by the end of the episode that all the other human characters are in the same boat as she is, and despite their different personalities, they still care for one-another. This helps reassure her that she isn't alone in this, and that there will be people there to help her when she falls. The fact that she realizes this during a funeral and it's immediately after Gummigoo got popped into confetti makes this a bittersweet ending at best, but it's definitely more uplifting than the first episode.

    Not to mess up everything, but it seem like the gummy creatures are made of ribbons and confetti and seeing that in the beginning of the episode to greet the new guests confetti was pouring down just think about that for a second 😮

      It's funny, too, because she said this specifically to stop people from claiming the show "contradicted it's own lore" or crying "plot hole" when characters eventually do recall stuff from their life before entering the Digital Circus.

    In Pomni's defense, it was her first day there. Everyone there was a complete stranger to her in a strange place where she had no idea what was going on. She was scared and confused and desperate to leave. She went through the exit out of fear.
    Ragatha still being a little upset by it is valid, but she's trying to be understanding because she knew how scared and confused Pomni was.
    Also, I think the reason she befriended Gummi first, was because he was the first person she found out she could relate to and find comfort in.
    She just didn't know Ragatha at first. But then she realized at the end of this episode that she can trust these people. And even though she just met them, they're all in the same situation.

    Jax is so suspicious to me. At first I thought he might be someone aware of what's going on, because of how he just casually had keys to everyone's rooms, but after this episode I'm more thinking he was a criminal in the real world. The desensitization to violence, the pickpocketing, the familiarity with weapons, knowing exactly what to do in a car chase? If it was just entertainment for him, wouldn't he be unintentionally causing more problems along with the intentional ones, too? But he seemed way too organized. It could also just be they have done a lot of similar adventures before, but no one else seemed to know what to do. It was also weird how little he cared about the loss of someone he clearly knew well based on the first episode dialogue. Seems like death just doesn't mean anything to him.

    You know what would be an even more messed up concept?...That Cain didn't actually intend for himself to be seen as a god by these NPC's...What if that was just something the AI developed on their own?

    Ragatha might be saying that there's no hard feelings, but you can see from her face after Pomni says nothing that she REALLY would have appreciated an actual apology. I wonder if they'll ever talk about it in the future, doesn't seem right to let that tension go unresolved.

    Caine seems genuinely concerned that there'd be no way to identify humans and NPCs if NPCs were allowed into the main circus.
    That STRONGLY suggests that the circus denizens are AI copies of humans, not actual humans. Otherwise, Caine would be able to figure out the difference between NPCs and Players by their input stream.
    No input streams can only mean that Pomni and the gang are digital Replicants, not active players.

    36:30 i’m not entirely sure what direction they’re going to take Jax character, but my theory on the ending scene part of his way of coping with this life is putting on this front.. and probably doesn’t like to show a lot of emotion in front of the others so he might be doing his own grieving away from them. because you can see a little flex of emotion right before he walks away from them
