A nice way to derust a petrol tank is to use phosphoric acid instead of muriatic acid. Leaves a nice coating of iron phosphate, which prevents it from rusting again for a while. Also you can basically leave it in there as long as you like, it won't accidentally eat a hole through your tank.
@@M.TTT. depends on the concentration, I used a concentration somewhere below 5% and left it for several hours which seemed to work fine. You can't really cause damage with the stuff so just let it sit for a good long while

I have that very same engine....I believe it is dated somewhere along the mid 90s. I was 9yrs old when I had my first MANCO single seater go-kart and it had this very same engine😁👍🏻. Good times!!!!! I got into alot of trouble with that go-kart. I drove it 4 miles onto the city limit streets togo pick up a mountain dew n chips at a gas station and with my luck a state trooper pulled me over, he followed me home while drove my go-kart n got off with a verbal warning.
Honestly the only reason I used RTV was because the gasket I ordered was on backorder and didn't arrive until the entire project was already done. Didn't seem to be any play in the crankshaft, but who knows I guess it could end up causing problems in the longrun
@@victorgirouard1543 Not surethat I agree but, at least take 2 and a half mins to scrape-off some Carbon. You see Carbon, and just put the Head back on. Yeesh.
I know nothing about small engines. That said, in about 1981, I had a go-kart with a similar repurposed single cylinder engine. It did not have a separate oil sump, but rather the oil was mixed directly with the gasoline.
I worked on a similar motor for a generator, the fuel tank had an old foam baffle that rotted and the plastic fuel pickup tube dry rotted. A very frustrating setup. A new fuel tank was over $100. Ugh! The damn thing only ran on choke.
3:48 I am really surprised that didn't result in a seized engine. 99% of the time the crank will not spin without a gasket. Must have been some decent case wear to allow that feat. But then again the engine didn't consume a single screw despite the butterfly being free of the shaft.
Is there a specific model for this engine? I’m looking into getting started on go karts and I’m looking at something that isn’t too costly just to get started and got the idea to purchase an old blower motor like this one
So, here's the scenario. Let's jam the throttle wide open, grease up the brakes to reduce drag and we'll just use that grappling hook I tied on to stop, since the kill switch is probably broke too. Sure- it'll be okay, it won't go far since the tires are bad and the chain will probably fall off this thing anyway. LOL RIP last person to drive it?
I personally would have cleaned up the carbon when I had the head off but great video bro.
That Over Dramatization of the Motor power was hilarious 😂
Sometimes you just need "better than before" rather than "good as new?". : )
"Good as new", it's a Briggs and Stratton, so it doesn't need to be very good to fill that statement's promises.
That's pretty sweet. I need to change my oil on my lawn mower. Thank you for the reminder
Somehow it never crossed my mind to change the oil in my lawnmower. Thank you for the reminder!
Looks like someone finally found the screws that hold the intake in place -hahahah
They weren't extra anymore.
Danger to manifold!

good tip
how long do you need to leave it in there to get the rust out compared to muriatic?

Cobbling is an understatement. Well done, respect.
Pretty cool video. Those 5hp Briggs and stratton engines will last forever. I've beaten up mine on my gokart and it still runs like a champ.
Carbon clean up and proper gasket for the sump is a must.
6:42 The spray bottle sounded like a child mumbling lol
Best restoration, best Author, best engine! 👍👍👍
Thanks for the oil change reminder

Just because you're a bright spark, doesn't mean you're a Champion :)
I'm glad to see you gave the engine some love, great video
Those screws in the intake were from the air box and the smaller straight slot (flathead) screw was from the carburetor it held the butterfly in
A bit of a treasure chest, or a lucky dip. LOL
my guess is they are from the air filter housing and the steel plate is the carburetor butterfly
I had one of those motors on a leaf vac.... pretty tough engine.
I love your vids its like an asmr temple

Use Gasket(s) on the Side Cover, Folks. They are used not only for sealing but, for setting Crankshaft end-play.

And the head gasket should be replaced when you removed the head.

Good Job Great video

You had a two stroke engine then. Bet it sounded pretty good when ya got on it lol
Besides not removing the intake Gasket ( no big deal ), the only thing I saw you do wrong is using a Champion spark plug. Next time make it an NGK.
Being ocd myself I'd clean everything I've removed but good video anyway

Probably could have got a performance carburetor for what that replacement carb cost. Still a good video, thanks for sharing.

oh jeeze, are those screws from the intake and butterfly? sure looks like it haha
9:12 The screws came from the filter with its giant hole, obviously
first time I've seen you put rusty parts back on.

It's just a variation of a standard Briggs and Stratton 5hp horizontal shaft. Underpowered for an adult sized go kart but plenty for a kid imo
8:05 😂😂😂

The air filter!
Excelente muito bom !
Wee.... I find the treasure :)
What was the spray you used to clean the inside of the engine??
More then likely it's just brake cleaner, use it all the time myself to degrease parts
the breather cover
Wow 🤩
Cool
Craftsman!!
👍
Love it!!
No money, no go kart...!!!!!
@ 5:46 ? What was that Silver Tape called...
HVAC foil duct tape.
For all that work and time, u could have got the same motor off a cheap brand new mower?
Lawn mower engines are vertical shaft. This is a horizontal shaft typically found on tillers and snowblowers
@@RestorationStation couldn’t you just have bought a cheap new one of those? Also aren’t you AvE?
Air filter housing?
saw a lot of rust in that tank when you filled it up, filters are king
still wanting to see the whole kart driving away....
Where's the test ride?
1note to self, get gokart
You might tell us what kinds of chemicals you are spraying on it, even if you don't mention a brand name.
Most things used are rhode hard put up wet. So better do a complete tlc job
Are you Dew Claw ?
lol
hmu if you need somebody to weld ur diff.
Any BAJA SAE members??
👎👎👎 Ты даже двигатель поленился перебрать!
