It was just one of those "heat of the moment” ideas. We didn’t really know how to end the song and I just sort of came up with the idea that we should destroy it. I was playing and Frederick was detuning the guitar as I was playing. It sounds very ugly but that was the purpose. It’s a kind of good ugly.

Since it's a down-tuning, I always perceived it as "weight" - or a display of "Burden" if you like 😊
I'm really glad you enjoyed the song! I think you can really hear the King Crimson influence in this one, but it's a lot more accessible than most of KC's stuff.

Can't say I've consciously picked up on the crash cymbals before (guess the melody and melancholy drowned them out for me), but now that you've pointed it out, I can't unhear it. Great contrast and great analysis on your part, the kind that enriches my appreciation of the song. As for Watershed, you've done most of the "big ones" from it, with the exception of The Lotus Eater. A bit manic, that one, but very impressive, hope you eventually get to it.
It's on the list, but it gets longer every day. Haha. One of these days!

Hey, Guitar player, keyboardist and drummer here. Just wanted to let you know that the cymbal you were referring to wasn't a splash, it was a china cymbal. Splash cymbals are the really small ones that usually sit right in the middle of a kit above the toms and have a much higher pitched sound. The china cymbal is the really hard hitting one good for heavy breakdowns and stuff. Hope this helps :3
You're absolutely right, it could be either. I was hearing a bigger splash, maybe a double splash, but some China cymbals do sound like that too. Called it how I heard it...I might change my mind listening again. Good catch!
The 480p music video you were talking about is like 3 minutes shorter than this version too. You would have missed so much. Smart decision!
