Hiking with Five Kids in the Smoky Mountains!! || Grotto Falls and Clingman’s Dome

- Today we’re spending our final day in Great Smoky Mountains National Park hiking with all five kids. Not all of our kids enjoy hiking, but we always like to push our kids just a little outside their comfort zones.
That being said it was important for us to find short hikes with big payoff and I think Grotto Falls and Clingman’s Dome fit both of the criteria well!
I definitely recommend bringing water shoes along if you hike to Grotto Falls. Our kids absolutely loved wading in the cool mountain water. As for Clingman’s Dome, my biggest takeaway is to take your time geting to the top-the views are worth it!

I loved natures and this is one of the best spot when you were on the summit. Yes the more time you spend with nature, the deeper your understanding of life will be. Steep hikes like that scare me but beautiful so worth it!
I’m scared of heights too, but there was never like a sudden drop off so it felt pretty safe! Definitely not easy to go up though!!

You definitely got to get there early in the summertime if you want a close parking spot we got lucky that time we parked right beside the bathrooms.
Clingmans dome is pretty awesome we've been up there probably six times and I've only seen it clear like that twice. You got lucky and got some good views!
If you keep walking that trail on the Appalachian Trail you'll walk to Charlie's bunion which is a really cool lookout point.

I feel like we easily could’ve spent another week in the Smokies and never been bored! SO much to see and do in the area! I’ll add Charlie’s bunion to our list for next time along with Midnight Hole! It’s been a while since I went hiking. I can’t wait to find trails in Texas to explore with the family.
I’m sure there are some amazing hikes in Texas!! There are a couple National Parks I haven’t been to in that state yet! I’ll have to keep you guys in mind when we go!!

Our key takeaways from these two hikes are 1) Bring water shoes for the kids for Grotto Falls-they had a blast playing in the water! And 2) Take your time getting to the top at Clingman’s Dome. They aren’t exaggerating when they say it’s a very steep-but short-hike.
Nick and Rachel are amazing and one of our first friends here on TH-cam. Your kids are much better hikers than ours. You do a great job highlighting in between the the trips. Can’t believe you edit on your phone, the video turned out great. The trail that takes you to the top of the trees is on my bucket list for sure. Many times the fam is tired and I’m out solo on long trips also. Have a great week.
They were so nice in person! I love how much they know about the area and how they film/edit. It’s one thing to meet up with YT friends on purpose-it feels surreal to just run into them on a trail like that! A couple of our kids really don’t like hiking but I like to push them just a little outside their comfort zone once in a while. Yay for hiking in the Smokies! I need to go back there and do some of those small hikes. It’s been probably 30 years at least since I last went up Clingmans Dome. I definitely want to do that again. Great series you have of this trip!

Thank you so much! Honestly, I use mostly TH-cam! Sometimes Trip Advisor, but mostly a YT search of “things to do in (enter location name).” I also ask on my personal Facebook page which is all family and friends: who has been there and what did they love the most! I keep Notes on my iphone to keep track of ideas, making sure we have a mixture of free things and things that cost money. I usually plan mostly outdoorsy things but in case we had super horrible weather where it was just raining and storming the whole trip, I always have backup indoor ideas. We didn’t have to use any of those this trip, luckily! I don’t mind questions at all! Let me know if you have more. 💕
