Gayle, thank you for sharing your talent and craft with the TH-cam world. I found out about you from Sara. I started watching Sara about Two years ago. only did decorative painting then. Now I like mixed media , making mini albums and other assorted crafts.I also started buying polymer clay and the tools that are needed to use when making clay projects. What a nice project, playing on the mica properties of pearl clay.
I love pearl clays. I have even mixed Silver with Black to make an amazing shimmering gray that makes an amazing base for cutting and putting back together. I'll have to do a video on that sometime.
I would love to see more canes. I gave up on them years ago, but I feel more comfortable giving it another shot. If possible I would love to see seasonal canes such as holidays, and actual seasons like winter summer ect.

I love your videos because you really take the time to explain things! I've been working with polymer clay for about 7 yrs and my down fall is canes. I just can't grasp the putting together of a cane unless someone shows me. You are very thorough in explaining which I appreciate immensely!

+Gayle Thompson (Luv2Clay) Hello again, I know you are asking for ideas on what to make. I get my best ideas from watching other artists channels. Then I do what they are not doing. If you've spend any time watching other channels then you'll agree that we really don't need any more tutorials on how to make a cupcake, ice cream cones, or anything Starbucks, 😆LOL. Doing the things that no one else is doing, or even coming up with a list of things that you haven't seen done and then asking your subs which of these things they want you to do is a good start. Because many times your subs don't know what they want to see because if they are new to clay then most likely it's something they have never seen or heard of before so they don't know to ask for it. Know what I mean? So my best suggestion is look around and do what you don't see done. I hope this helps, Take care, Dee 😊👍

I'm glad you like my videos! Thanks for watching! I'm afraid I am color challenged myself. BUT I have found ways to help with my color combinations. That would be a great topic for a How To video! It may be a while until I can do one but I will certainly give it some thought. In the mean time, there are 2 polymer clay artists that specialize in color. Check out Maggie Maggio! Gayle, I learn alot from you. This is the third video of yours I really want to do. I want to do most of yours, but thus one I really really want to do. To the gal who had styrofoam eggs, be aware that some styrofoam pieces explode in the oven. you might want to put an egg into the oven by itself to see if it melts
Thanks, Peg! I appreciate your encouragement! I agree, styrofoam should NOT be put in the oven! I've used plastic eggs covered in clay but I like the real ones best. I just don't eat that many eggs! Maybe I can find someone that would sell me some clean ones!
+Gayle Thompson (Luv2Clay) Hi Gayle, here is a tip. I buy clean, real egg shells at Easter time. Last year I found them at Walmart. There is a company that sells them cleaned and ready for use. Also, if you can find the real eggs that they fill with confetti those work too so long as you don't mind the sound of confetti rattling around inside, LOL. I hope I've been of help.
Funny you should mention the confetti! Mine has a few glass beads inside so it rattles too!
I would like to see faux opals, faux gemstones andfaux beachglass and the use of glow in the dark powder. I have heard about this can be used, and it could be fun to see how it can be done. :-) your tutorials are really clear, and easy to understand.
I have done some faux gemstones but it's been a while. I will review some of them and incorporate them in my tutorials. However, I'm not sure what 'glow in the dark powder' is. I know there is a glow in the dark clay but I've never heard of a powder. Can you tell me something about it?

I love the effect of this technique but was looking forward to seeing the difference between the egg surface and the little container as you did them slightly different.
I'm not sure what the difference was. It's been a while since I did that video. Maybe I'll do another one soon with a plastic egg. That one was done with a real chicken egg.

My biggest regret was not being able to see the final results from what you made that day, whereas you showed us what you had previously done, when you did the egg. Thank you for doing this vedio..I made my own colors and did this technique on some hearts. One I left raised and one I gently smashed before baking. Both come out astonishing. Have not tried sanding any of my clay work. That will take some courage. Again thank you.

I'm going to try this today, and I hope mine turns out as pretty as yours. Note: on the Retro Cane, if you use the square disks, you get the same outcome but it fits together nicer, into a square cane.
Thanks for watching. I did a video on a square retro cane. I use the square disc when I want it to be square unless the design does not fit it. Like the black and white retro cane. I wanted the shapes to be round and a square disk would have made them square. I may try it sometime with a square disk. It may be interesting. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks but I don't have any eggs to cover. I did the same twist on the pillbox. The only difference is after I applied the twist to the egg, I smoothed it with an acrylic rod. Then I baked it, sanded it, and polished it with a buffer. If I ever get any eggs (real or plastic) I will do a video showing the process.

Love your video! You fully explained how to get the rainbow colors. I would like to put the twisted around a glass dragon eye that I want to make but don't know if I can heat up the glass dragon eye with nail polish and the twisted clay around it. Do you think it would make the polish come off?
I don't use nail polish on my clay items. A lot of them are not compatible with clay and will become sticky over time. However, I would not put it in the oven. I would wait and apply that after it is baked.

Simply stunning! What would happen if you rolled out the twisted strings? Would the color variation stay the same? Is that what happened on the egg?
I never tried rolling them out but it should give you the same result. What would you be doing that you would use them rolled out? I'm curious! Always looking for something new! The egg was the result of the twisted rope wrapped around the egg then rolled flat. It should give you the same result to roll the twists. Thanks for watching!

Sorry but I didn't see your message until now! My bad! Yes, I have done the knitting technique. I was going to show that in a video soon. I've thought about doing a Q&A video but didn't have enough questions to do one. Now maybe I have!! I'll think about it. I prefer Kato Polyclay but work mostly with Premo on my videos because it's quicker to condition. I don't glaze often but when I do, I usually use water-based Varathane although I have used Sculpey Glazes a few times. When I want a satin finish, I use Kato Liquid Clay. I know you can use a heat gun to make it a glass-like finish but I usually heat it too long and it gets bubbles! I still prefer the Varathane.

I love the piece, but I love the flattened effect slightly more. Do you just roll with a roller to get the flattening, or would you put it through a pasta machine. Many thanks.
I think rolling through a pasta machine would ruin the effect but I've never tried it. I rolled this with an acrylic roller after it was wrapped around the egg. That worked best for me.
Oh, thanks Gayle. Now you say it I can see it. You wrapped the egg then rolled onto it. That's how come it looks so smooth! :) I bet the pasta machine would yield an awesome effect too although slightly looser. I'm going to have to get my extruder out because I think this effect would look awesome on some jewellery. Thanks so much again for sharing.
I also sanded and buffed after baking to get the shine so this also helped make it smooth. I would love to see your results if you try rolling it thru the pasta machine. Thanks for your comment!

Sorry but I don't have any plans for doing an egg anytime soon. Maybe after the holidays. I used the exact method as the pillbox only I rolled it smooth with a roller. Besides I don't eat many eggs and rarely have them in the fridge. I've heard that closer to Easter you can find blown eggshells at the grocery. Maybe that would be the time to do another one.

I just love your tutorials and the egg is beautiful. I have a hard time keeping my things from breaking and I saw on one of your videos that toaster ovens sometimes don't heat the clay at the same temperature all over. I believe you said you use a convection oven and I looked on eBay for one and they cost anywhere from $30.00 to $500.00. I can't afford anything near $500.00 and I was wondering if you might suggest what ovens you would recommend. Also, are you familiar with the NuWave ovens and do you think they might work? They are a lot cheaper than the other convection ovens on eBay. Thank you! I just found you a couple of weeks ago so I've only seen a few of your videos so I look forward to seeing them all!
Thanks for commenting! I'm glad you are enjoying my tutorials. I wouldn't consider an oven on eBay. My oven is a Hamilton Beach convection oven and I think I paid about $70 for it at either Target or Walmart. I've had it for about 6 years now so it has been good money spent. I don't know much about the NuWave but I've seen reviews about it and I don't think they were very good with clay but I can't be sure.
What type of clay are you using? The cheaper clays (Craftsmart, Sculpey III and the like) don't hold up well. Sculpey III is pretty brittle when baked even if baked at the correct remperature. If you are using a toaster oven and can't get a convection oven right now, invest in a good oven thermometer. Don't put anything in the oven except the thermometer. Turn your oven on and watch the temperature. It may heat up pretty high and then cool off to the appropriate temperature. If that happens you can preheat your oven until the temp levels out and then put your item in and start the timer. The longer you bake your item the stronger it will be as long as the temperature is correct. I hope this helps. Let me know what you do!

Thanks for your comment. The Bake and Bond will help it stay attached but when I don't use that, I usually pop it off and glue it on with Weldbond glue or 2-part epoxy.

You mentioned a couple of colors I don't recognize, wisteria and sunset red. Are those SculpeyIII colors? I use only Premo. Thanks for the great video.
These are Premo colors. Wisteria is a regular Premo color and Sunset Pearl is a Premo Accents color. Premo came out with new colors about a year or so ago. Both of these are in that group.

Gayle do you use Bake’n’Bond to attach to the egg? And how long do you bake them for?
I'm sorry but it was a LONG time ago when I covered the egg and I don't remember how long I baked it. However I do remember that I did not use anything to bond the clay with the egg. Since it is closed in it does not require a bond. Hope this helps.
So helpful. I appreciate that you told us about how your forgot to put the bake 'n' glue on. I had been sitting there wondering if glue would be used. Is there any difficulty in snapping the polymer off the box? I am interested in extrusion stuff, too. I like the surprise of seeing the stuff come out of the extruder -- then what? :P

i loved your video. I have't worked with my clay in over 5 yrs. it was all still good just needed conditioning and that wasn't as hard as I had thought it might be. I must have over 50 unopened pack and was afraid it had ruined somehow but it hadn't. I wish you lived close I would love to get to know you and have a play day.

What kind of egg did you use. Wood, plastic, real eggshell? I have this tutorial saved because it is simple but leaves a beautiful design.
This is a real chicken egg that has been cleaned. I put small beads thru the hole before I covered with clay so it sounds like a rattle. Thanks for asking.
Do you think it might have looked a bit better if you did a little bit of that yellow next to the pink color to make the rounding blend better. That is just me. But I love the egg idea
Thanks for your comment. The colored twists were made from a rainbow blend. When it is wrapped around the egg, I have no control what color is next to it on the previous wrap.
What kind of sandpaper or buffing tools do you use like for the egg? Thank you, this was beautiful! I'm just beginning to play with clay and need to learn a lot yet!
I did the egg at a sanding and buffing workshop so the instructor brought sandpaper and a Foredom buffer. BUT since then I've used the same technique using wet/dry sandpaper in several different grits. I usually start with a 360 grit then move to 600 gr, 800 gr, 1000 gr, 1200 gr and 1500 gr. I also have 2000 gr but only use that if I want to make sure it has really smooth. Then I polish with a dremel with a homemade buffer. I took some white felt and cut about 12-15 circles about 1.25" in diameter, punched a small hole in the middle and layered them on a nail. I pushed them down firmly to the nail head then put the pointed end of the nail in my Dremel and tightened. I use a variable speed Dremel and start at a slower setting. If you use a high setting, it will heat up the clay and the clay will become dull again! So start slowly and buff all over moving the buffer at all times. Don't let it sit on any area or it will over heat. I've been happy with the results. Hope this helps.

The egg was done with Kato colors mixed with Pearl. The twist I made in the video was Premo clay pearl colors.

How did you get the smooth and shine on the egg? sanding? I am deaf and the captioning didn’t say....
The egg was sanded with several grits of sandpaper from 490 grit up to 1500 grit & buffed with a Foredom buffer.
Also.... Where do you get the pill boxes?
I got them from another artist that was doing a Destash but you can probably find them on Etsy or aBay.
Gayle, in another of your videos you said the egg was plastic you used, is that like a plastic Easter egg? I would have thought it would have melted in the oven.
Yes - I have used the plastic easter eggs - the cheap ones - and have had no problem. However I would let them cool in the oven and not handle them until they are completely cool just in case they get soft. I've never had one collapse on me. Thanks for asking!

What brand pasta roller do you use?
Right now I'm using a Mercado (Atlas) 150 with a motor but I have pre-ordered the new Lucy Clay Machine which should be shipping in another month or so. I can't wait to try that one! It will have the ability to use my electric drill instead of a motor! Brilliant!

Sorry but there is no video on how I made the egg. But I used the same process as the pill box. The only difference is I rolled the surface smooth after I applied the clay to the egg. I did the egg about 10 years ago. Thanks for watching!
