I still think that the thing that needs to change most in Yugioh, is artist credit. Every card game tells us the name of the artist who created the image. We get it, Kezuki Takahashi created Yugioh, but who drew these images? Get rid of that damn code that isnt used for anything anymore, and tell us who created the artwork!

Personally, I would change the TCG artwork of Last Day of the Witch to a witch's house (maybe you can see the shadow of the witch inside) with villagers holding pitchforks and torches outside of her house outside getting ready to burn her house down.

Most of the changes are made based on the fact the original Japanese card game was marketed for teenagers and young adults, not children; it was their idea to market it for children that led to many of the changes. The same happened to every other anime 4Kids picked: get a 16+ anime and turn it into E for everyone; and thus the subproducts also have to change.
Also, "Last day of the Witch" is called "Witch Hunt" in Japan.
I know this is a fairly old video to be commenting on, but I'd like to say that I really like the Soul Release edit. I think the sparkling white dress was a really nice touch. I think it actually made the card much prettier. It was, for me, one of those rare edits that actually worked in the card's favor.

The Japanese name of the card is literally "Angel's Lifeblood", so the artwork makes sense. This is one of those cases where they redid the artwork *and* renamed the card.

There was harpies girl which I was very surprised wasn't mentioned because they released the OCG artwork for it originally in TCG and parents complained and it got chanced in the unlimited version. As for Tragedy I remember opening the original version and I can't believe that it wasn't changed until the reprint.

I actually think Tragedy was made worse by the TCG. You go from a picture of a guillotine to a picture of what might be the leadup to a murder-rape.
And no, I don't think Last Day of Witch went "too far". Yes there are real people who were executed as witches. So what? The artwork is stunning. If anyhing I think they should have used actual spellcaster monsters in the artwork rather than generic women. Imagine if it was Dark Magician Girl and Dark Red Enchanter (de-costumed) in their places.

When I first watch the Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime Series, AND Started collecting the TCG Cards back when Yu-Gi-Oh! first hit North America, I was always under the impression that Yu-Gi-Oh! was directed more at an "Older TEEN" Audience. Not Kids!

Armed samurai Ben kei OCG art depicts him with arrows going through his body and and him still grinning in the face of death. The card is based on Benkei a Japanese warrior that died standing up. He was so resilient that even after arrows pierced his body rigor mortis set in before his body fell.

MegacaptialG it's not mainly dye to culteral references. Japan doesn't aim this stuff to kids. People used to assume that but that was debunked and many people who been to Japan themselves can confirm that. Lets remember Yugioh in Japan is targeted towards teenage audiences. The OCG age range is 13+. Trust me I own the OCG packs I can read Japanese. And Takahashi stated he made Yugioh for male teenage readers. Typical for Shonen manga as they are primarily intended for male teenage readers. Plus the content such as profanity, and blood are in the Japanese animes and manga. The manga is worse when it comes to the content. But even the cards as you can see have some inappropriate content on them OCG wise. Soul Release being the best example. But Yugioh in Japan is not for anyone under 13. For years I only seen 13 and above players compete and so on. Plus the age range has never changed in Japan. There is a reason Konami made Yugioh into to 2 separate games. The TCG (Trading Card Game) and OCG (Official Card Game). Due to different age range and rulings are different. Not just language and art. Takahashi stated the game was made cuz Teenage fans petitioned for it to exist. The newer Yugioh anime after 5D's may look innocent but looks are decieving when it comes to anime. 95% of anime are primarily aimed towards the teenage and adult demographic. Shonen is the most popular of them all and has a major variety. So Yugioh's original demographic is teens. Always has been. I actually don't count TCG for it is not the original version of the game. America only censored it to market it towards kids cuz at the time kids were into card games. And to the american perspective that's what they thought. Plus America had in there minds that since it's animated they could profit it off to kids. But now that no longer happens Yugioh is now know for it's truth. It's true demographic is teens and still is in Japan and Korea. OCG is the only version. If Funimation existed back then Yugioh would be how it is in Japan. Which is not bad tbh.

A lot of card censorships made sense in the early days (before you have an audience, pick your battles, blah blah - the same approach that Nippon Ichi Software did). But nowadays, when they have a core fanbase, there really is no excuse.

We have a Trap called Tower of Babel, which is a story in Genesis, a nun called The Forgiving Maiden, which can Fusion Summon a card called St. Joan. To top it all off, we have a top-tier archtype based on a book called The DIVINE Comedy (Burning Abyss)

One of the big differences besides cultural differences is that the OCG is marketed at teenagers or rated T whereas the TCG is marketed at kids or rated PG. That is why some of the original cards can seem more extreme or inappropriate to us.
the difference in the card arts for ultimate sacrifice and soul of the pure make more sense when you consider the japanese names (offering of blood and blood of the angel respectively)
the idea here with blood of the angel is that an angel's blood has healing powers i presume, offering of blood is just kinda a cliche offering to summon a monster.

Well, "Ultimate Offering" 's Japanese name is "Chi no Daishō", which (roughly translated) means "Comsensation of Blood".
Dramatic Rescue is about to lose her left arm btw. The shaman is still in prayer in ocg as well. Water Omatics passes in Japan simply for not having nipples. Final Flame has to be censored as that's promoting Witch Hunts, that's being burnt at the stake.

Soul of the pure is actually translated as something like sacrificial blood of an angel in Japanese, the player is the one who I guess drinks or bathes in the blood and gets healed. It makes sense, and I personally prefer the Japanese artwork.
It does make sense. Wouldn't be the first time I've heard of a myth about angel blood having pure powers.

One thing I need to make clear is that in Japan, Yu-Gi-Oh is not a children's card game; it's a teenager's card game. Yes, in Japan, the game was intended for older audiences than it is marketed here. it's also worth mentioning that Japan is a little looser with depictions of nudity, as their age of consent is lower in Japan to include high schoolers. Hence why there is more nudity in some of these cards. That said, I do agree with some of the alterations, especially considering the change in marketing.
Before watching the video, I will predict that Monster Reborn will be on this list. Now, I look forward to seeing your picks :3

One censorship that really bothers me is the one for Rose Paladin, even though small I ofund it unescessary to do that as I don't think any children would notice what they are censoring

Also, that Last Day of Witch card isn't even like the Salem trials, witchcraft was only heresy (thus punished by burning) in Europe. Salem only had hanging.
Am I the only one who thinks the TCG changes often make for better artwork most of the time? There's still several dumb/lazy edits but... who honestly prefers the OCG Monster Reborn to the TCG?

I like most of the TCG arts. The only one's I have problems with are some of the guns. Some cards look better with the cartoony guns (for example, Barrel Dragon) but some look a little goofy (Fortress Whale).

man I just realized that a lot of my cards were Asian English. I had most of these cards uncensored
Taunt: I can kind of see why they changed it, but its still a stupid reason. Japan in the early 80s and 90s had this idea of every American being muscular and overbearing, which the OCG Taunt depicts. Two Americans, muscular and rather overbearing, goating you into a fight.
My two favorite censorships, just because of the stupidity, are Don Zaloog and Blackwing Armed Wing. So, you replace Dons guns with swords? Ok, sure, its the early 90s, I could see that change, but apparently having steroid arms is ok... Skip forward a few years, we get Blackwing Armed Wing, which gets his shotgun changed into a supersoaker... He at least keeps his gun, but still, supersoaker colors? Or maybe hes firing nerf bullets now?

I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY about Last Day of Witch's art being unimaginative and just plain lazy. I remember when I first saw it way way WAAAAY back in the day (it is an old card after all :P) and thinking to my teenaged self "Really? REALLY? This is the BEST they could come up with. They couldn't have come up with a better concept to depict the obliteration of witches?! A silly, cartoony Hagitha-style witch in front of a "NO" sign is the best they could do?! "

When you say OCG, it’s only the Japanese version. The Korean cards (which is part of the OCG) uses the censored artwork.
