I'm of two minds about this car. If I saw it today I would have bought it, kept it as a daily driver, and restored it over time to look hot. When I was 18 in the mid 60s I had a 57 chevy 210 coupe in great shape except for a messed driver's door. I've kicked myself around America at least once for letting it get away. My dream of course was to upgrade it to a Bel Aire, put a 327 in it, trick out the interior, and repaint it to the original color, whatever that was. It was orange when I had it. The car I had before that was a 56 Chevy Bel Aire convertible with a 6 cylinder engine and a 3 speed Hurst shifter. It was in great shape. I would have dumped a 327 in it too. The 56 cost $175 and the 57 was $400. Ah, the foolishness of youth. Were I wise I would now have a three car garage with the above two cars and my daily driver, a 1999 Cadillac Sedan d' Ville d' Elegance with less than 70,000 miles; a real cream puff.
I was in California back in '88, had a Harley '82 FXR that I bought, unknowingly with a cheap black paint job over a stock red paint. I told a friend in Sacramento I would like to have a custom paint job, then told him it would be a candy red on the right, an imperial blue on the left, faded into purple in the middle, as we put a silver bace coat first with the color scheme and a bit of flakes in the translucent topcoat. Rode it to Carson City Nevada to a big Harley Dealers meet, didn't take the time to wash it or clean it up for the show, but entered it in the bike show. The judges, coming from the right side, glanced at it and said, 'a red flake job, made marks on their pads, then went to the next bike. About two bikes past mine, one judge glanced back and asked the other two, pointingtomy bike, 'Hey, wasn't that a wasn't that a red flake job ? It's blue flake on this side'! They went back and looked it over again. One of the judges said, 'Of all of the custom painters in Cali, I've never seen a paint job like this one, and it's from Georgia ! Got 3rd place out of over 100 bikes and it wasn't detailed like the others had been. I like something different, that will catch the eye of people. Not only is the "profit" calculated without overhead and labor, it also doesn't account for the cost of transporting to auctions out of state, hotels, auction house commission, etc. All things considered, he's usually losing money, though this episode didn't incur a lot of transport cost.
I purchased two of these. One was a hot rod with a 4 speed and a smashed fin for $200.00 the other a driver with no paper for $100.00. Oh I made the purchases in 1973.
when they said wrecks to riches i didnt know that they were the ones who were going to wreck it. also it seems to me that the work they did to make it a gasser ,was a lot more work than the original few rust repairs needed. wich was the very thing they were trying to avoid in the first place.
Actually, when you build cars for a living, and do it right, along with having to meet deadlines for shows/auctions in order to keep the bank roll flowing in the positive (considering each one of those guys is making easily $150+ a hr), it's hectic. It's dramatic. It's chaos. These are you daddy's garage builds that took your entire childhood and teenage years to complete. These cars are done right and that costs big money. And bottom line; only reason they're completed is because of the team he has built.
Did I hear $8000 for a paint job? .......I'd say someone got taken to the cleaners,......aside from that, it does look Spectacular !.... Gold Leaf.....mmmmm a bit over the top... $80,000 wooow.....if I had the $$$ I'd buy it too,....Its just an Awesome build. 👍👍.
Opportunity knocks when you least expect it- wow its a good thing that camera crew happened to be there at that exact time and place, what are the odds?
First car I ever recal traveling in was a pastel green '57 Chevy.Just the old Biscayne cheap model my Dad bought back in the day. Sadly poor' 'Limey'' (name we called her) cracked her block in 1968 and dad then bought the '68 Ford Falcon. Which I kinda liked too but hey! It sure wasn't a '57 Chevy! SOmewhere my still living older sister has a cartoon that I drew back in '68. Back when we discovered that the car's head was broken. Thus a dead car. But I don't believe in souping these cars up. That's a sacrilegious act! These cars are antiques! And been so for at least forty years. KEEP THEM REAL!
Yes lol I thought that . Completely fake .boring daily dogwalk and hey presto sees car and buys off neighbour .like he never went down that street before in his neighbourhood 😂and all the while on that very day the camera crew are walking with you ...maybe some day he will find a mustang in his bedroom ☺☺
I am a big fan of putting power in an older car!!, I have two Camaro's. A 1980, and 1978! I wish I could afford to have Barry's shop build my car..I am disabled, wheelchair bound, and don't have that kind of money. That is only a dream by the way.. I will only have a mild engine to put in my cars..
"...nothing else exists like that." Smh there are hundreds of cars just like that. Everything that was on that car was off the shelf except for the 2 frame rails they butt welded in. Yes it is a very nice nostalgic gasser that was apparently worth 70 to 80 thousand dollars but it isn't 1 of a kind and there are many like it.
I like the silent auction and the winning bidder had the right amount. Cost 58k and 380 man hours. So do the math. 58000 x 38 (380 hours) / 100 = 22040 + 58000 = 80040. Nice buy.
I'm pretty sure they include the work hours in the price. Because there's no way an in house paint job costs 8k on paint alone. That has to include the labor cost for prep and painting too. So I assume they include labor with the prices for everything.
if you are over 50+,you'll understand.its actually a decent recreation of what you would actually see in the 50's including the motor, the gold leaf, the tint the paint.its awesome.
Beautifully job, you took a car that was not worth restoring and turned it into a piece of art. I've done body work full time for over 50 years and can say that was not a car to restore, there are still lots of 57s out there with decent bodies to restore.
roll cages and cutting the frame after paint? seriously... people were calling this car a rust bucket, that's hilarious it wasn't in that bad of shape. you could of did the floor and the trunk and left the body as is lets be honest it was a DAILY DRIVER. Ive seen cars 2000 -2010 in worse shape rust wise. These "builders" are a joke
No the builders are pretty good, its the fucking setup of the show that ruins it. Reality car shows are just big pieces of shit thrown together. They would've made a real good daily driver out of it if they weren't forced to sell it at some action in 4 goddamn weeks.
I agree. It was far more valuable as a restored car because he didn't really make that much money. They are claiming over 23k profit, but that is ONLY the cash outlay. Almost 400 hours of labor he had to pay for, using the shop for those 400 hours etc. When you add the cost of labor at a rather cheap $40/hr, he has over 73k into the car (58000 + (380*40)=$73,200 They could have spent 1/2 the money restoring the car, likely fewer labor hours as well. While they probably would not have gotten as much money, their costs would have been a lot lower.
No matter about personal opinions about the car what the show really shows is how versatile the old Chev's are. If you can dream it up , you can build it up. Try and do some serious mods to a late model vehicle and have the end result look as tidy. Personally I think it is a waste of a classic, but at least it wasn't a '55. I would of gone for a pro Street look with it, lost the signage on the sides and got rid of that god awful red film plastered over the windows. Plain old Dark smoke tint would of enhanced that gorgeous paint job. Smoothing the body really enhanced the shape of the tail end. All in all not a bad job, well executed, but a little more thought to design and it would of appealed to more people instead of a select few.
The 1957 Chevy is a classic from my time and in mint condition as it was before they destroyed it would have fetched a top dollar bid at a bidding place.
Looks like alot of it was cut out in the build. He ain't leaving that rust chance of loosing a sell . But I didn't see pulling the body off to blast the frame an paint. I think he knows his way around the junk yard. The guy doing the drawings is the artist . He had a good paint scheme. Those guys can put it together. I just wonder how many they turned out in a year $$$$$$$ . I see alot of cars in Tennessee . Loretta Lynn's good place to spend the weekend.
Love the episode. The thing I don't understand is, instead of just ripping all the stuff off the car like ripping the interior out and the door panels just ripping it all off stuff that could be saved and resold to somebody that's trying to keep an original car look, why not take a little bit more time and take it apart without destroying it and then resell it to somebody that wants to keep that factory original look even if it's not perfect. You could probably make an extra $1,000 back on all that stuff that you're just throwing in the garbage because you destroyed it when you took it off. Other than that I do like your videos don't take me wrong. When I'm changing stuff on my 59 Thunderbird I'm being careful to try to take all the parts off that I'm going to replace and keep them so if somebody ever wanted to put it back they could. That's probably a little bit extreme for most hot rodders
If they would have pulled that car out of a barn or junkyard and turned it into that, I would like it. The fact that they pulled a perfectly fine '57 Chevy and did that to it, makes me sick. That car would have been a perfect project to restore, not modify like that.
Unless you're doing it at home, time is money. I did this for a living for several years and there were always difficult decisions that had to be made.
The way I start any of my gas vehicles. I always use the average barbecue size tank and one of those driveway sealers. I just spray it in the engine and it's on the first time you start it. And like gasoline that you can put in too much foul and wet the plugs out then it'll barely run and you have to replace the spark plugs what a mess. It works great. I also unscrew that big piece off of the end of the propane tip on the end. I also have a smaller one nonadjustable I mostly use the noadjustable one that uses propane and oxygen. I just use the propane only and I use the adapter that goes to the big tank fitting. And the hose is about 4 foot long so easily reaches around the engine. One of my vehicles sat for about 12 years with propane down the intake or a intake pipe plug hole and a hot battery right when I turn the key over it always starts. It's what I use on all small engines and big engines. Once went out to help my family member the fuel pump went out and I put the big nozzle in the intake and drove the car. I couldn't get the mixture right but it ran down the road at about 15 miles an hour just to get it home. And propane is 130 octane it always Burns super clean. Never any plug fouling or carbon buildup.
Sadly, that era is over... The guys that love that car are in their 60's and don't have the back to put into it anymore. I got out of all of my muscle cars, without losing my ass. Good luck unloading these 'one of a kind' cars now
you burned then sucker, real muscle cars are huge money.not this fake gasser shit but real 327 66 chevelles,69 boss mustangs,68 440 chargers are through the roof.
This show is one of the reasons these shows are not the air anymore.we are all not stupid enough to believe that you can hack a car together to meet a so called deadline every week and produce quality
shoulda left it alone or put it back "right" Don't think the gasser concept was really bad but shoulda left the front end chromed grille on it.The tube grille seems lacking... Im fully aware the old grille, bumper, and trim would have added weight but the tube grille they put on it just doesn't knockout outta the ballpark.
the best car I ever owned was a 64 chevy impala ss I wish I still had i it would be worth a fortune now but back in the 60s who would have guessed.the most I spent on a car redoing it was a 66 mustang the hardest part was squeezing a 460 big bloke in it but when it was done it just flat assed moved.
ill start by saying:you guys are artists, artisans and craftsman and do awesome work. SO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE: loose the obvious fake element of only having 4 weeks, its fake drama and adds unneeded tension. its unnecessary and stupid and makes this show annoying to stomach...... just build the damn car and dont add extra hollywood bullshit that we dont want or need. dont turn this into survivor with 300 extra staff on the "deserted island"
That cab was AWESOME I want it. Imagine catching a cab in tha. I think you should be good on time and style. Hats off and I'm not even a 50s fan more late 60s early 70s
Everyone that's talking trash about they shouldn't have cut that '57 Chevy 210 up and turned it into a gasser, it would have cost more money to fix the body rust using OEM panels than what it would sell for. If they was going to restore it and keep the car sure but to resale it no. I know what it cost to restore a car back to its original state I wouldn't have cut up the frame like that but what they did was best imo.
Yeah it was. Look at your local craigslist ads. Cars look great, sound cool, but when you pit one on a lift or grab a flashlight and look around a bit like in the door seals and you'll see what "junk" is. Most people think if a car has fresh paint it's a good car. They are called scams. This bel air looks like it was one of those. My neighbor just dropped 25 grand on a old AMX painted candy red. I went over there and hes got a old shitty $5,000 AMX junk of shit with new paint on it. I pulled a few wood screws out that were holding the rubber hose in the trunk used as a trunk sealer. Pulled up some carpet and showed him all the rust. You'll realize this later on if you get into cars. Flashy paint and new carpet and seats tells me lool hard and careful because something is prolly wrong and they're prolly hiding something.
@@joshcassidy2092 same with new tires. Why'd they put new tires on a vehicle to sell it? Is the suspension having problems and wearing the tires uneven or what. People don't understand the car can look good but the devil's in the details of a car those patch repairs that were on this car completely hack job repairs
the 2 cars i liked the most were Gang Green and the beautiful blue nova that didn't sell ......I would buy that blue one if i had 50,000 lol i don't 5 dollars Its fun looking at this show tho..
What I can't understand is how professionals can get stuck with a rust bucket. Every car they do is a problem. Why are they unable to inspect the car thoroughly before buying? They should have gone bust. Only by the grace of the producer of this show they're able to pull it off.
I have a hard time watching shows like this. They find a super rare 150 series '57 Chevy and instead of restoring it, they cut it up, discarding many original parts including the original engine and interior and total ruin the car in my opinion. It would have be so cool to see this totally restored!
they made more 150 2 door sedans than Belair sedans. A restored 150 is worth half what a restored Belair is unless you got a fuel injected one or something. And that obviously wasn’t the original 283 under the hood anyway
Well, I wouldn't get to upset. At least the car is still drive able and the new owner appreciates it. Also i've yet to see a shop just throw away valueble parts for any Classic Car. Even seen some sell broken cast iron parts. You can bet good money that those old used Chevy parts somehow found their way to the Pomona Swap Meet!

Reconditioning the front bumper would have made it more complete, thumbs up.
when they said wrecks to riches i didnt know that they were the ones who were going to wreck it. also it seems to me that the work they did to make it a gasser ,was a lot more work than the original few rust repairs needed. wich was the very thing they were trying to avoid in the first place.
Another 57 ruined...
LOL at all these car building shows. They just never seem to have enough time to finish the car, like there will never be another auction.
Pooby1000 Yep, adds bullshit drama
You can not build a qaulity piece like that fast . been there .
Jeffrey Yeater - quality, cheap, fast. Pick any two.
Gotta have the DRAMA!!!
I love the metallic goldish bronze look . . .
"I'd like to keep it in the neighborhood".... Goes and sells it at auction xD
I caught that too. I felt that for the dude
Pxp
Yup I caught that too, that guys is going to be extremely disappointed.. RIP.
I know! Then he destroys it by turning it into a gasser.
now I have a 64 Pontiac Bonneville that I built . it's beautiful too . I've got two salute's last summer . from car guys .
When I was a kid a neighbor had a 57, same model and year. His was canary yellow, and wasn't a gasser like most of the hotrod's there.
That was lucky Barry took the camera crew with him on his walk :)
Yes lol I thought that . Completely fake .boring daily dogwalk and hey presto sees car and buys off neighbour .like he never went down that street before in his neighbourhood 😂and all the while on that very day the camera crew are walking with you ...maybe some day he will find a mustang in his bedroom ☺☺
yeah it's what everybody does. I have lots of video of my dog taking a morning shit
and the funny thing is they still didnt fix the rust they just covered it up again
Awesome build. One of the greatest I’ve ever seen. SEMPER FIDELIS
Another 150 Bites the Dust! As if Racing didn't Destroy Enough of them Already!
Love the cars but the whole premise they have to be at the auction in a month and the fake drama is so lame, but that's what sells I guess.
Now you enjoy it only at the drag strip instead of all the time. Also the announcer said the green car did 6 second 1/4 mile at 110 mph, not true.
If you figure in the labor for four weeks times the number of guys working on it Barry lost big
bucks on this deal.
I guess they already added to the total amount the workers pay cut to get to $58,000
YES AND THE MONEY THEY GET FOR TV
I'll bet his neighbor was pleased with what Barry did with ole Betsy.
Love the car but the window tint I could do without.
if you are over 50+,you'll understand.its actually a decent recreation of what you would actually see in the 50's
including the motor, the gold leaf, the tint the paint.its awesome.
Yes it’s a beautiful recreation, but that colored tint is horrible. It’s the only thing I never liked about the gassers.
That is dream motor still to this day id love to have that motor
What is the motor

Buyers remorse usually sets in later that evening.
why is anyone saying they ruined it? The car now helps keeps alive the 60s gasser era..it just got a new job!
When you add the cost of labor at a rather cheap $40/hr, he has over 73k into the car (58000 + (380*40)=$73,200
They could have spent 1/2 the money restoring the car, likely fewer labor hours as well.
DID YOU NOT SEE THE HOLES IN THE BODY MINT CONDITION?
I would have liked to have seen the original front with the chrome bumper.
I'm just curious to know if they ended up fixing the rust damage... seems they just skipped over that part.
Following the logic of this show, I think the 700 HP engine fixed it.
Daniel Smedegaard Buus - the torque was so high, the rust fell off.
That car would have been a perfect project to restore, not modify like that.
yeh man.Same feeling I got from the biggining
QuickyBaby C. B k
It was a rust bucket, gees.
Unless you're doing it at home, time is money. I did this for a living for several years and there were always difficult decisions that had to be made.
Thats the first 57 I ever saw with the 55 rear quarter trim.
even the pro can make a mistake..... nice job, love it
The way I start any of my gas vehicles.
I think he did good job building it into gaser i love it
The money he spent on the gold and custom paint. Could've spent same amount on fixing body rust.
"Do they make this back panel Chris"?....We have a real Pro here people!..THEY MAKE EVERY SQUARE INCH OF THIS CAR !
But, But they need more drama.
This show is one of the reasons these shows are not the air anymore.we are all not stupid enough to believe that you can hack a car together to meet a so called deadline every week and produce quality
True That!!
This show is ridiculous
Very cool build and the video is well executed.
shoulda left it alone or put it back "right"
Don't think the gasser concept was really bad but shoulda left the front end chromed grille on it.The tube grille seems lacking... Im fully aware the old grille, bumper, and trim would have added weight but the tube grille they put on it just doesn't knockout outta the ballpark.
I absolutely agree w/ CEEAAT that the tube grille is kind of 'anti-racecar'.
Wrong it was 1955 Chevy that had the 265 v8 it was first
Barry great job. Now thats a winner! Great instincts!!!⭐⭐⭐⭐
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for Watching.

The auction seems like a lot more work than it should be.
His margins seem tight at 10-20k and big auctions take a bite plus travel for the entourage.
I just love 'Gassers'. Awesome work. Just subscribed.
the best car I ever owned was a 64 chevy impala ss I wish I still had i it would be worth a fortune now but back in the 60s who would have guessed.the most I spent on a car redoing it was a 66 mustang the hardest part was squeezing a 460 big bloke in it but when it was done it just flat assed moved.
ill start by saying:you guys are artists, artisans and craftsman and do awesome work.
SO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE:
loose the obvious fake element of only having 4 weeks, its fake drama and adds unneeded tension.
its unnecessary and stupid and makes this show annoying to stomach......
just build the damn car and dont add extra hollywood bullshit that we dont want or need.
dont turn this into survivor with 300 extra staff on the "deserted island"
You need a time machine in order for them so listen. this show is from 2007 or 08
Awesome project.Very educating.
That cab was AWESOME I want it. Imagine catching a cab in tha. I think you should be good on time and style. Hats off and I'm not even a 50s fan more late 60s early 70s
He should have tried to keep the car at the museum for a while...maybe bring his wife to the museum to break the news to her there.
just a great crew and the best man got the car...
Gee, I wonder why this show isn't on any longer?
Everyone that's talking trash about they shouldn't have cut that '57 Chevy 210 up and turned it into a gasser, it would have cost more money to fix the body rust using OEM panels than what it would sell for. If they was going to restore it and keep the car sure but to resale it no. I know what it cost to restore a car back to its original state I wouldn't have cut up the frame like that but what they did was best imo.
That was NOT a "junked" car......
These shows are all fake and scripted.
its junk now !
@@michaelf.2449 see, this guy gets it.
If I had that kind of money , I built my I built my own!!!
My favorite part was the hug part.
the 2 cars i liked the most were Gang Green and the beautiful blue nova that didn't sell ......I would buy that blue one if i had 50,000 lol i don't 5 dollars Its fun looking at this show tho..
What I can't understand is how professionals can get stuck with a rust bucket. Every car they do is a problem. Why are they unable to inspect the car thoroughly before buying? They should have gone bust. Only by the grace of the producer of this show they're able to pull it off.
always pay attention to the man with gray in his beard, there is no replacement for experience, none
I have a hard time watching shows like this. They find a super rare 150 series '57 Chevy and instead of restoring it, they cut it up, discarding many original parts including the original engine and interior and total ruin the car in my opinion. It would have be so cool to see this totally restored!
They messed up a classic.
they made more 150 2 door sedans than Belair sedans. A restored 150 is worth half what a restored Belair is unless you got a fuel injected one or something. And that obviously wasn’t the original 283 under the hood anyway
So you would rather it rot to the ground lmao
With the Chevy. Most people, wouldn't have waisted thier time with it.
The basically rebuilt the un buildable. Not original, but a beautiful ride.
The car looks like the Black Widow, the fuel injected NASCAR version of the '57 Chevy. It was so fast NASCAR banned fuel injection for over 50 years!
Ed! Are you black?? Production cars were never banned from racing until OJ outran the police in LA in a fool infected Bronco.
Body shop guys building a drag car....no clue, but it will LOOK good. Rush to coolness.
Makes me never even consider buying an auction car.
Don't leave them out in the rain, not even once.
What a waste, turning that car into a gasser!
Kanahele styles yea man what a waste .....
Damn
Especially if its one worth restoring. I never saw the attraction for gassers.
