It's not important if the steel ball flies and hits you, but you have to make sure the magazine hole is well formed. Can't you just replace the band and shoot?
black typically does the best in UV. GZK says their yellow does the best in cold. So it might depend on context. How you cut them makes the most difference probably

Which bands last the longest?
My favourite bands are the GZK green. They are fast and last a decent amount of time. I’m not sure there is a definitive answer…
