Heh, no. The older generation is typically delusional about their era as opposed to today's, due to the _"I had to walk up hill in snow both ways back in my day"_ phenomenon. Case in point, Rick Barry was on Dan LeBatard's show earlier this week and claimed he would average 40+ a game today due to the rule changes.

Simon Wilder To be fair, Hubie Brown's speaking the truth. Soon after MJ retired, the league made the defensive 3 second rule and banned handchecking, the use of forearms and other physical contact on the perimeter to 'open up the game'.
sportygu123 Yep, there's a bit of both. I have heard (I think from Sports Guy) that in the old Boston Garden, Bird got every single touch called in his favor around the basket. On the other hand, run-of-the-mill guards were a lot more likely to get mugged and not get a call. Did anyone notice that the Heat weren't getting bail-out calls in game 4 of the finals this year? And they couldn't do much (although James's box score still looks good b/c he really is that good).

You mean the series in 95 which MJ only played 17 regular season games but still averaged like 30 a game during the playoffs? And in the 87 and 86 series' he had to go up against arguably a GOAT team in the Celtics headlined by Larry Bird and Kevin Mcchale with Charles Oakley being his second best player.
Now you called MJ a decorated role player. What role player has ever averaged 37.1 PPG in a season, won 6 finals MVPs and 5 RS MVPs? Name one with similar accolades, I'll wait. You also keep referring to the players that guarded Jordan as "dwarfs". Im not even gonna go into that, considering many of them were his height, very good defenders, or both. He also lit up and locked down plenty of great players during his Wizards days at the age of 38-40 so that just kills your weak argument.

I think the no call on moving picking helps today's player gain an advantage. Guys literally move in front of the defender, turn around and trap him from contesting a shot.

I don't exactly remember how long I have followed NBA Basketball but it's at least 40 years (since I was 10). Coach Hubie Brown has more basketball knowledge than anybody at any time in the League. As much I love Phil Jackson and respect Red Auerbach, Coach Hubie Brown has forgotten more basketball than they have known put together. Listen, real talk, I don't have the time nor all of the information to share on Coach Brown, but I PROMISE YOU, DO SOME HOMEWORK ON COACH BROWN AND LISTEN TO HIM SPEAK on subjects from player development to roster changes, to team travel management. Do you ever get anything right? Handchecking was outlawed in 1994. Jordan's highest scoring years were during when hand checking was allowed: 37.1 points per game in 1987 and 35 points per game in 1988. After handchecking was outlawed in 1994 his average steadily declined.
His average steadily declined because he was in his mid 30's and his game changed to a more perimeter-type. Easy to see when you know what you're watching. And what he is pointing to is how much easier it would have been for a prime Jordan to destroy today's league. And no, handchecking was completely outlawed in 2004!

kcire10 10 it had to do with playing the triangle as well. Phill Jackson told Michael his scoring averages would roughly decline by 20% all though he would still be able to lead the league in scoring which he did. Michael accepted this because winning was his priority.
His average declined because he had a better supporting cast and the triangle was installed. Which btw is a ball movement system that is designed to get everyone involved. Some of you guys don't know your basketball.

Michael Jordan really had to work hard getting to the basket because hand checking was legal at that time. The lanes was crowded at that time. Jordan was hammered every time he tried to get inside the lane to score. He had to deal with physical teams like the Knicks, Pistons, and the Celtics. If he was averaging 32 points during that time, he probably would have averaged 45-50 points per game today.

All you need to look at is how Kawhi was able to contain LeBron with his defense which is not that physical at all but depends on very good footwork. LeBron had a good FG% but also 7 TO and almost a non factor. He could not get past the guy. All he did was put his head down and almost stumble to the ground. How can anyone seriously compare this to Michael Jordan? I just don't get it.

MJ is 6 for 6 in the finals, six finals mvps, no loses. Lebron who? Never compare a legend to a great player, seriously you have to earn that GOAT title. If you have the flu? You have to play through it, and man up. If your the best player your drive should allow you to overcome cramps. If your the GOAT? You wouldn't pull a whodini in the finals, cause that isn't an option. If your the best? Regardless of your supporting cast or game circumstance, you would rise to the occasion to score 50 in finals, or to lead your team back when there doesn't seem to way overcome the point deficit. Jordan isn't perfect, but he did these things when his team needed him most. That's why Jordan's name is always in the conversation. He was the real deal.

I completely agree. Michael Jordan was showing unbelievable marks of athleticism flying to the rim versus opponents similar to MMA fighters. Lebron and all the 'greats' today don't even do the things MJ did, and they often have open lanes and oppurtunities at the rim.

That's half the players in the NBA though not just Lebron... It's just the way the game is now. Lebron also didn't start making complaining to refs every foul popular, heck, Tim Duncan has been doing that since 1999... However the only player that's criticized for it is Lebron.

exactly. hubie did talk about the physical defense of the 70s-90s. but it was to prove his previous point that there were a number of talented perimeter players who played back then such as oscar who could play in today's game, not to assert mj's dominance; the title of this video is a bit misleading.

josh portie I'll be honest I didn't watch much 80's ball. But there is a reason why people fell in love with the likes of Larry Bird. There were ballers then who were ultra competitive and expressed it at times with trash talk. Guys like Bird, Magic, Jordan and others wanted nothing more than to be that guy who wants to take the last minute or play to put his team through a playoffs series or championship. Trash talk can't be conducted in today's game anymore and you just don't see ultra fiery competitiveness. Just guys who either have big games or fold under intense pressure. Granted there are a few teams who still embrace the team game aspect, but the entire league is still so geared to hero-ball and building a team for hero-ball.

bball Jordan also knew how to work technique with his athleticism. It took Lebron 7 fucking years (and a good coach mind you) to develop a back to basket game to compliment his style of play. Lebron is a rhythm scorer and can be taken off his rhythm if he is consistently bodied. Guess what the Pistons tried to do with Jordan but being a skinny 6'6" 200lb guard with moves allows you to do? And credit to Jordan, there are some real dirty shit the Pistons bigs tried to pull to nearly injure him, but he kept coming back.
I just think Lebron wouldn't be able to deal consistently in a series against the Bad Boy Pistons and he would force things too hard. Barkley is heavier than Lebron but since he's shorter, his lower dribbling is harder to take away when he attacks the hoop and being his size, he's harder to outbody.
Hubie has always been my favorite basketball analyst since I was a kid. His passion for the history of the game and his keen knowledge of the Xs and Os make him the subject matter expert on the NBA.

In today's NBA, you basically can't lay a hand on the person with the ball. It's almost laughable.

I think guys like Curry and Durant would not be able to deal with the Bad Boy Pistons. Larry and Michael were not afraid to outright BRAWL with those Piston thugs on the court. Curry and Durant are incredibly talented scorers, but they are toothpicks. They are fortunate to play in a league that doesn't allow any real contact.

Thanks Hubie Brown. Now I can question the numbers that Wilt, Russell, Oscar were putting and think to myself, the league wasn't as dominate and competitive as it was in the 80s and 90s, early 2000s. With the way Russell and Wilt were rebounding the ball at that time explains it. Cause the paint was small. No wonder. It's funny cause Shaq was just as tall as Kareem and Wilt but didn't seem to average 20 rebounds. Cause the league made the game more difficult so that the bigger dominate players didn't have the easier advantage.
Wilt grabbed a way higher percentage of his teams rebounds than shaq, he made Russell look like an amateur when he grabbed 55 rebounds on him and the celtics. You dont think it was competitive? Look up the players back then, especially the bigs. Also you think Jordan would take a beating? Referees from the 60s have confessed they would let guys elbow, cheapshot and even punch Wilt because he was too good for being black. Though wilt is strong athletic and all, during his time Bill and him are the only Titans at that time, the key was changed to 12ft cuz it's unfair for smaller players against their size! Though, not much great players that can out run them compared in the golden era, whereas fast game strategies and aggressive fast superstars can out played him in them on court and score easily.. Everyone admires wilt for being dominant, such as rebounds, bocking and scoring (100pts historical in one game) but considered the few amount of competitions and changed rules to make it balanced, i think wilt will be dominant in the 80s 90s doing his thing but he will be limited in the court! The hand-checking ban was implemented because the league was spoiled by Michael Jordan. Fans wanted guards that average more than 30 ppg, dunk over opponents as well as dazzle and WOW the crowd. The only way I’d criticize a player for not winning a championship in a team sport is if he was the main reason his team failed. I’d charge Lebron with Miami losing in 2011, but in every finals series after that, he was clearly the best player on the court.

older generation people fail to understand, the player today are bigger and stronger than back in the days, we have point guard as athletic as Russell Westbrook and Derrick Rose, and we have small forward that have a build like a Karl Malone named Lebron.

Actually the players were not smaller on average. You have MORE athletes today but the Masons, Oakleys, Barklys, Kemps, Kerseys, Thorps, Ewings, Oneals, Webers, on and on back then were just as strong. Coupled with the fact that players in the 80s and 90s played with a better basketball IQ and scheme. That is actually the x factor. A smarter way to player the man with the ball and had nothing to do with mass and velocity. A 1992 MJ was just as strong as the players now and just as fast. There was no real gain from him. With his IQ, mid-range, quickness on D, will, and as complete as he was he would be putting up numbers much greater than any player you see today and that is the true test of who is the GOAT

The only thing is, the very dominant players of today, the absolute elite ( LeBron, Duncan, Wade, KD ), I believe would have fared fine in the 80s-90s.
They obviously wouldn't play like they do today. But I believe that they could adapt to more physical defense over time. Also, let's not get to carried away. Not ALL the teams on the 80s played tough defense. Look at teams like the Nugggets for example.

I'd like to think that if Lebron played in the 80's and 90's, we wouldn't be comparing him to Jordan. We'd be comparing him to Magic and Bird. LBJ would've been more of a Point Forward and most of his dunks would be on the fastbreak. In his prime, I can imagine him putting numbers somewhere around 20-25 PPG, 8-10 RPG, and 8-10 APG.
Where he'd really be deadly though would've been on the defensive end. He probably would've won DPOY at least once. I mean, can you imagine a guy as big and strong and quick and athletic as LBJ defending you with handchecks and forearm shoves?

I agree it can mess with peoples heads, which is why apparently to some of these old guys there were no downsides to the game back then smh. I agree some things during those times were better, but some don't like to admit that some aspects of the game are better today. Team defense for example is more elaborate, we have better quantity and quality 3pt shooters, and better floor spacing on a consistent basis. One thing some old guys always like to bring up about the game from back then is posting up, and how not many people can do it today. but the reality is that defenses are better suited to guard post ups now, notice whenever a player posts up nowadays its not only stagnates the offense, but teams rotate better on 3pt shooters when you double team post players, making the inside out game less effective than once upon a time. Of course guys from back then were better mid range shooters, and were more fundmentally sound overall. But these are just a few things to prove that all these guys arguing about whose era had better players refuse to look at facts that prove, no era was better, its just that each one was different. Now debating which era was more entertaining is up for debate.

my pet peeve is when a player complains to the ref after getting hacked and it becomes a five on four with an easy look because one guy (usually the super star) is behind the play cuz he's pleading his case to the ref...I wish the NBA would grow some balls and give refs the green light to Technical foul the fuck out of guys for complaining about a call smh, just my opinion anyway

IF you make zone illegal again, which it was before the 2000's, and allow players to be more physical, considering Lebron's strength and quickness and ball handling do you see him really struggling to keep driving to the rim? edit: for context, since Hubie forgot to tell you guys, in the 60's they played at a MUCH faster pace, allowing 20-30 more possessions per game. Many times people have adjusted Lebrons stats from our current pace (which is amongst the slowest it's ever been) to the pace of the 60's and it came out as like 38, 11 and 12 per game. I know people enjoy hating on Lebron, but context does matter. Pace does matter. Zone being illegal back then does matter. Research that before ya'l jump on the crampgate band wagon.
and that's why you know nothing about basketball. The handchecking and what not from the single 1 on1 defense back then allowed easier help and back then they'd just clobber you. You act like (or have no clue) guys were not build like that back then. There were gift, physical players then. Freaks like Shawn Kemp. Trucks like Karl Malone, Barkley and Mason. And all of them not only had the ability to stand against James but also had legit rim protectors behind them in a lane that was clogged up. James is NOT driving the lane with his right hand unchecked over and over again. The IQ back then was off the charts. He would have solid numbers. But he's not putting up what he does now. Meanwhile in a more relaxed, free flowing NBA MJ would see his numbers go up. I could see James with higher assist numbers in the 90s because of the good spot up shooting but his point and boards would not be what they are now
